@@marcellapuryear5728 that's actually the trend in the 1920s setting of Chicago. Flat-chested and androgynous body-type was the standard beautiful during that era so Renee's body was just perfect. Even Catherine herself said Renee was plucked straight out of the black and white photos from that decade and became technicolor. If you'll take a look at Catherine's body especially in Hot Honey Rag, they also made her look as flat-chested as possible. Heck, even illustrations from back then usually show willowy built of women. Also, Renee had to lose a lot of weight after playing Bridget Jones so she can play Roxie. That should show how dedicated she is for her role.
I think that CZJ's musical theater talent and experience bumped everybody up to the next level. Catherine gave it 100 in run throughs and rehearsal. Renee seemed to follow her lead. Catherine fully deserved that Oscar, in fact it should have been for Best Actress. One day she will be an E.G.O.T..
Anyone else notice the chairs? One for Catherine, Renee, Queen Latifah, and then "Unfaithful." Hahaha! That one must be for Richard Gere since that movie came out the same year. So funny!
My god, I’m like a toddler with a new Disney movie; I’ve bought Chicago and cannot stop watching each number. I recruit others to watch with me and I force Fosse conversations everywhere I go. Clearly, I got problems. 😉
I'm not hating on Renée it you could tell Catherine was the trained dancer. Renée did a good job but Catherine was more grounded, like Gene Kelly. Less bouncy; her movements were more "rooted". I probably am not making sense but it was something my tap teacher taught me in high school.
Rob Marshall said he didn't want two professional dancers. He wanted an obvious professional (Catherine) and an aspiring performer (Renee). It made the story believable in his estimation.
Well Reene had no previous broadway theater experience before the film. Catherine however did so the casting was intentional for the story of the film.
Catherine already performed in London musical shows before she headed to Hollywood. Renee has zero previous experience in this genre, give her a break !
Probably because you are a judging piece of shit, who have never done anything like this. She became fit and skinny for the role. Everyone ignores her saying 'she is not talented enough' because it is easier than facing the fact that you only look at a woman's shape and not her skills. You know shit about theater anyway.
I don't know. But there was also a film released around the same time called "Unfaithful" that also starred Richard Gere that has that typeface. Maybe he borrowed the chair.
Al final de Hot Honey Rag Renée hace una vuelta pero Catherine no la hace. Si vemos esa en la pelicula Velma si la hace. Tal vez usaron a otro actor ya que catherine no lo podía hacer.
Catherine is the best dancer of the two, but Rene is more watchable because of blonde hair, white top, bare midriff. Catherine was correct to get her hair cut short to stand out.
She just got finished with doing Bridget Jones' Diary and she had to lose tons of weight for this film. Then again her figure is very much apt for the setting of Chicago, the 1920s-1930s
I love Renee, but sometimes I think beyond being a natural athlete that she feels the pressure to be thin by Hollywood. Not sure if anyone is this skinny as an adult without trying....
I'm about that skinny and in my late 30s. I just can't gain weight. I prefer myself with some extra weight but every time I gain a few pounds, all it takes is a cold or flu and I'm back to being a stick
Jahangir Hussain Not at all! Have you seen her curves in 'Bridget Jones's Diary'? She just slimmed down quite a bit for the role 'cause women in the 20's had flatter chests.
Renee is 100 times better than campy Catherine. But Catherine married better and her hubby promised her an Oscar so there you have it. Pact with the devil
@@jenm9099 You're naive.Catherine broke up that marriage to get an Oscar. He promised to get her one. It's in an interview. And he did! So now she's stuck with gramps as her lover.
Don't talk bollocks. You can tell straight off the top just watching her in these rehearsals that her roots are in musical theatre and how naturally this comes to her but she'd performed in two different West End shows before she was out of her teens. I don't dislike Renee at all but you can definitely see the difference and how she has to work harder that's for sure.
