Your mention of clean parts making the heavy slap harder is why I will usually defend melodeath over regular death metal, though the purists hate on that. If it is nothing but growling and blast beats the whole album, you get used to it and it just doesn't feel as intense after a while.

Ryan Martinie's influence is plastered all over metal bass these days. The Jinjer bassist is a prime example. He is basically just carrying on the legacy. Before him the bassist was just "supposed to" play the rhythm root notes to give the guitars more punch. Martini could legitimately be considered the driving force in many of their songs. I know for me as a bass player, he was and still is one of my biggest influences.
@theSinisterBend

@@kennyhouser3467 100%. I remember me and a bass player friend of mine learning Mudvayne songs to jam together back in the early 2000's. Watching him play along to the song Dig while I played guitar I couldn't believe the fret board acrobatics he was pulling off. The regular guitar work in that song is pretty basic but the bass was next level. I'd never seen a bass played like that in metal.

Speaking of Mudvayne, Ryan Martinie deserves even more credit than he already gets. His influence is seen all over the metal scene. Everywhere from Metalcore on down to Tech Death. He made bassists actually leading songs instead of just playing whatever root notes the rhythm guitarist is playing a thing. His playing is where my liking of their music begins and ends. I can think of at least 12 riffs I've made myself in that style.

Mudvayne´s LD50 is to this day the most complete album ever for me. I love every song on it, even the transitional pieces. The whole album is so cohesive, i hardly can listen to one song alone, have to listen to it from start to finish. You can definetly count them as New Metal, but they have so many prog elements, especially on their first 2 albums. Weird time signatures, tempo changes, song structures, interesting (imo) lyrics to fill pages. As many other pointed out before, Ryan had/still has a HUGE influence on metal bass players to this day. Saw them live like 5 or 6 times and they killed it everytime, playing always 1h+ sets, giving all they got, esp Chad who i felt was close to passing out a lotta times. I´m obviously biased, so im a bit salty about that b-tier xD Love your content tho, but please listen to LD50, im sure you´ll love it. Cheers

Im with finn on this one, but I do like clean bridges when they accomplish a mood or “clash” with the rest of the song in an intentionally environmental/ dissonant way. often times they don’t seem to add anything, and that’s what sets bands like korn and soulfly apart, the songwriting in korn is just objectively better than most other nu metal and every section of a korn song is a hook so the little worm parts just make their songs even more catchy
@XViTNg

Part of nu metal's influence is from grunge, which is why you sometimes get the quiet verses with loud chorus (which was practically a requirement in grunge). I think the reason people (like myself) love mudvaybe is the sound. chad gray (in my opinion) is one of the most talented male vocalists out there. love his sound, incredible range, incredible control over his voice, etc. ryan is obviously one of the greatest bass players to ever grace metal music. matt is an INCREDIBLE drummer who pairs extremely well with ryan. honestly their weak point is their guitarist greg, but he’s solid and does exactly what he needs to fit the music. combine that with consistently good songs (once again in my opinion), and it becomes tough not to like them. at least my 2 cents. good video though, entertaining and inciteful as always

Metallica = Linkin Park (most successful and went the most mainstream later) Megadeth = Limp Bizkit (cuz Durst definitely has some of those douchey Mustaine vibes) Slayer = Slipknot (I think the reasons are obvious, Slayer was more brutal than most other thrash, and Slipknot was as heavy as nu metal got) Anthrax = Korn (early pioneersbecame forgettable in the middle stretch of their career then brought it back with the return of a key band member, and their team up with Skrillex is reminiscent of Anthrax's Bring the Noise crossover)

i think the number one reason is that (hed) p.e. AKA Jahred (it's basically just Jahred's vision AFAIK) is to change styles and kinda.... go with the times? before (hed) p.e. he sang in a funk metal band (dont remember the name but he dressed like a glam metal singer in those days - he's like 60 now so it checks out) he later created/joined (hed) p.e. in the 90s and the first album was straight rap metal á la Limp Bizkit's "3 dollar bill y'all " and evolved more into nu metal on subsequent albums, but incorporating a lot of reggae, funk, and hardcore punk but never letting go of the rap metal sound entirely. the 2014 and 2016 albums were heavily influenced by psychedelic rock and hard rock. then they started incorporating a lot of trap. and the latest album has a LOT of variety. i honestly HATE their lyrics (conspiracy theories, homophobia, raping young girls - when he's not singing about social issues or smokin weed...) and Jahred always seemed like a troubled douchebag but i honestly love (hed) p.e.'s music and have listened to them since like 2006. Jahred was always kind of making music he thought would make him cool or popular but at the same time he has a lot of artistic vision and song writing skills. which is probably the reason why they never made it as big as korn and slipknot despite being just as good music-wise. they are too eclectic/controversial for the mainstream, basically.

I was very young when this stuff first came out. I remember hearing Korn's first album in 4th grade when it first came out, I was 8 years old. I remember also delivering papers to the first coal chamber album also around the same time, and Dez was a big influence on all the piercings I got. At the same time I was into bands like Pantera, Type O Negative, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, Helmet, Rammstein and the likes. I'm from the woods of Northern Maine, and music like any of this was hard to come across. It was a 60 mile drive to access a music store. Rock radio was very hard to get, mostly country. Soulfly was actually one of the first really heavy albums I actually bought and Max kind of changed my perspective of music in general. To give you an idea, I bought Creed "My Own Prison", and the debut Soulfly album. I didn't listen to that Creed album all that much after that. Long story short all these band were the beginning of my metal journey. Insomnium, Mgla, Dark Funeral, Wolfheart, Satyricon, Acid Bath, Suffocation, Dying Fetus, Amon Amarth, Electric Wizard, Ahab, Novembers Doom, Kataklysm, Isis, Opeth, Katatonia, Ne Obliviscaris, Vital Remains, Immortal, Bathory, Nile, and all of the kick ass metal I listen to today, is in part due to all this metal from this time period.
