Number 1 and Number 2: A Day of Training

Find out how 2010 Games champion Graham Holmberg and second-place finisher Rich Froning Jr. are training for the 2011 Reebok CrossFit Games. At the Rogue Fitness training center in Columbus, Ohio, and CrossFit Cookeville at Tennessee Tech University, Sevan Matossian captures these two elite athletes preparing themselves for the mental and physical battles they are soon to encounter.
Reminiscing on his experiences last year, Froning says, "You can look at it like I lost or you can look at it like he won, and either way the outcome is he won. There's not much you can do about it, and I can't change anything about it."
To prepare for this year's Games, Froning says his game plan is simple: "Train as hard as I can. That's what I'm going to do, and that's what I have been doing."
Reigning champion Holmberg confronts criticism about his performance and obscurity over the past year. He says the Open was a "lose-lose situation" for him-if he did well, people expected it, but if he did poorly, people would question his capability. Holmberg finished 37th overall in the Open, and he didn't compete in a regional event.
Both athletes say they are ready for the Home Depot Center and July 29. They analyze their own past performances and that of their peers, sizing up the competition.
"We'll see what happens when we get to the Games," Holmberg says. "That's all that really matters."

those guys are both very humble yet very hungry while at the top of their game. any time i start to lose my mojo this video helps to put me back in a positive and motivated state of mind. I cant wait for the 2013 open to start. Its a great build up to the regionals and then the Games. Im glad CFHQ is doing more stuff like the US vs Europe in the "Off Season". I would love to see a CF League one day so we could see the top CFers all year long.

Thank you. Too many people are still stuck in the "everyone want to be a bodybuilder and look good" mentality. I love crossfit because it challenges me in ways the common three day split routine never did. I never climbed a rope or even attempted a handstand push-up before I found crossfit, but now I'm good at both as well as many other skills. It's good to hear from a fellow crossfitter.

I really think everyone is entitled to say whatever they want, but I do find it so funny when "bodybuilders" or "fitness enthusiasts" or even 'Keyboard warriors" rip on the kipping pullups or movement standards . Whenever I see bodybuilders, all I see is half movements (bench squat, lat pull, you name it) and they kip almost everything. Just look at anybody in a gym or video do bicep curls or triceps pushdown or whatever, it is all kipping. I know some limited range of motion comes from bulk and other is a choice to build bigger muscle. the point is everyone does what they do to be the best they can be. Let's just leave it at that ;-)

Nice workouts from these guys, much respect to Graham and Rich. Some people yet don't understand that Crossfit is a new approach to fitness, it brings back movements from olimpyc weightlifting and functional movements, physical appearence it's not essential, any sport and physical activity carries the risk to injury.
@sergiobla87
@sergiobla87 10 лет назад
yeah it could be that strength and conditioning coaches have been used some of this movements, i'm not denying that, even mma coaches put in practice some of this movements, you can see it in Georges st. Pierre training or other athletes, but Crossfit put together all this movements that have been forgotten for many people that just think in Bodybuilding training style when they think about training...and do 30 reps of clean an jerk is tottally respectfull thing you know, if you are trained for that and if you want to so do it!!! is the same thing with guys that practie Parkour, Freerunning, Street Workout or somenthing else, they do some unconventional movements or reps, and you can't assure that "intelligent" training can avoid the risk of injury, because any kind of physical activity carries the risk of injury specially if you do it with the goal to achieve a better performance or change your body if you don't belive me search how many injurys professional athletes have even if they are with a strict trainer or coach
@forzacavaliere
@forzacavaliere 10 лет назад
sergiobla87 No it's not a "new approach to fitness". Granted, it has helped popularise the fitness movement so in that regard I am thankful for the existence of CF, but really, it's nothing new. They just made it seem like they made this stuff up. But some people have been training like this for a long time.
@sergiobla87
@sergiobla87 10 лет назад
forzacavaliere the thing is a significant amount of average people nowadays have a wider variety of options in training and think beyond than just do bench press and curl biceps...and of course JUST SOME PEOPLE have been training like these for a long time but in some closed or elite circles but as you said we have to be thankful to Crossfit to put it closer this kind of perspectives to the average people. Peace.

Your points are all valid. Just a footnote though, Rich Froning did a work out he did where he had 8 minutes to find a 1rm clean and jerk and 8 minutes to find a 1rm snatch. His total at his weight class would have qualified him for the USAW open this year. He did this about 2 years after this video.

@K8T0 those plates are made exactly for the point of being rubber and dropping. They also need to have tue same radius so when they are doing a power clean or snatch or deadlift, its the correct distance off the floor and not too close like using 25 lbs steel plates which are a smaller radius

I don't understand why people are butthurt about form, and how crossfitters can't *perform* in terms of weight lifting competitions. Who gives a fuck. Obviously, the only people that care about that are internet trolls and people thats mirin. Who cares if the workouts have always been around, who cares about all this bullshit on form. Crossfit is designed for people who just wanna get fit and thats exactly why crossfit does. It provides an environment for people to be active, positive, and most important. *FIT* !

Their called bumper plates, specific to olyimpic lifting. The point of the plate is that it is a specific size regardless of it's weight and made of a rubbery material that can be dropped on the floor. They're not fake. They're just not made like typical metal gym plates.

@jimjoneislaw
@jimjoneislaw 12 лет назад
Excellent question. Crossfit it designed to build well-rounded functional body that can accomplish many things, you will learn to run faster, jump higher and be stronger, if you do crossfit even for a short time you will find that you have better overall fitness. Think jack of all trades. For the average person who doesn't want to be a skinny distance runner or a bulky bodybuilder and wants to improve their all around fitness, crossfit is the perfect mix.

CrossFit alone? I'll take that as a compliment since CrossFit encompasses everything. Olympic lifting, Endurance, Speed, Agility, Flexibility, Strength, Cardio, it's all there. It's not the same as when you say Powerlifters only Powerlift. So when you say someone does CrossFit and nothing else, you are actually saying they do everything.

This argument is exact the reason that some people consider crossfit athletes to be the fittest, if you define fittest as a situation where you are overall good in all the athletic movements and endurance, and not only in one specific sport where one movement or endurance state is dominant.

I wanted to respond to your comment of why Froning deserves the title: the fittest man alive. Of ALL the things happening in the world, this title got you bewildered. You sound like a smart guy how about you provide descriptions of what "the fittest man alive" should be. And then it's best that you make a game or a show based on your descriptions, so that you can back it up with something you created other than words. I think it's fair.

Fitness isn't restricted to cardiovascular strength. These guys displayed at a globally recognized competition that they can perform tasks with every aspect of their body at a quality that puts them at the top. The only competition that would compare is the decathlon at the Olympics.
@MyBittersweetTravels
@MyBittersweetTravels 12 лет назад
Dude, I totally agree with you on that. Nonetheless, I think that a CrossFit Games Champion is the person that would best be able to do all that series of tasks at a high level. These dudes can handle 10k runs with ease and lift 355lbs from the floor over their heads, they can do up to 30 handstand push-ups unbroken and deadlift almost three times their bodyweight. My point is that, in that "list with no end", they would be the best performers if they compete with any other sport's champion.

People rail against crossfit, i don't think they fully realise what they are saying. I don't really do crossfit, but i do dosome Crossfit workouts, why? Because they are good workouts. Crossfit basically did not invent a single thing they talk about, they just came up with a method and trademarked it. Barbell complexes, olympic lifts, circuit and HIIT training have been around for fucking years. Kipping pull-ups and putting beginners in to do snatches is fucking stupid, and why Crossfit should be critiqued (also because they act like they are a REVOLUTION, how can you revolutionise anything that has been around for decades?). But don't rail against their overall approach, which is at the very least admirable.

EXACTLY! If you read anything about what CrossFit is by Greg Glassman he will tell you competing in CrossFit is only half of what CrossFit is about. Application of what you do in the gym is the other half. On the sports field, on a mountain or a life or death situation. Apply what you do in the gym to real life and that's what makes an "elite" athlete.

CF, IMO is an example of "teaming up with someone in the know". The box I attend employs certified olympic lifting coaches who teach separate classes only for lifting. The CF coaches I've worked with have all taught other sports before, like martial arts, gymnastics or team sports. We seem to agree with the idea behind the latter part of your post, though I don't think you give people all the credit they deserve. It is our responsibility to know the risks associated with the sport we're playing.

Let me explain something to you guys real quick. I completely understand the hate for crossfit. I think many, and possibly the majority, of crossfitters brag too much about it, and use shitty form in their movements. However, I think crossfit is a great thing to add to anyone's athletic training, when done right. I think that professional crossfitters train exactly the right way. Look at a pro like Chris Spealler. He works on mobility and form more than any other athlete I have ever seen. He also focuses on main lifts like squats, deadlifts, and bench for strength. Crossfit can be a great thing to do, but it is absolutely necessary to work on form, mobility, and strength as you do it.

According to Muscle & Fitness (Dec/12) Rich's best ever clean & jerk is 365lbs (165kg) and snatch 285 (129kg) (keep in mind this is CF form, not Olympic discipline). His total would be about 294kg and the person who finished in last place at the 2012 olympics, in his weight class, did 313kg. The gold medal winner snatched 185 and clean & jerked 233. Rich is a heck of a CFer, but he couldn't hang with olympic lifters
