Can't believe , Bryan Adams not reaching number one during the 80's, in Canada, Especially having one of the biggest albums "Reckless" in the 80's, plus Bryan being from Canada.
Surprisingly, Bryan Adams had more success in USA than Canada. He had only 2 top 10 in the 80s in Canada : "Run to you" (#4) and "Heat of the night" (#7)
@@francispelletier3647 ,as many hits he had in the 80's and only two cracked the top 10 in Canada. That's crazy. When Corey Hart had a few number ones in Canada and was Canadian too , I believe. Not knocking Corey"s talent, but Bryan should have had more top 10 hits and at least one number one song in Canada during the 80's
@@nathangrogan1105 - Corey Hart is originally from Montreal. Going back to Bryan Adams. His best hits came in the first half of the 1980"s. During that time Canada was hit by what was called "The Second British Invasion".
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems most #1s had just 1 or 2 weeks at the top, a few had longer. But no-one had more than 7/8 weeks except Stars on 45 (12 weeks), making it the longest runner of the 80s?
When I was 15 years old I listened to these songs on the radio. Let's dance, Centerfold, Our house, etc .... Classic songs. Great video !!!! I love 80's !!!!!
I was born in the year 2003 and I love with all my heart the music of the decades of the 60S, 70S, 80S, 90S and some of the 0WS. For a Young girl my age in my country, Argentina is very strange because They prefer to listen to Reggaetón and Trap. Anyway, I love these types of videos. Thanks and greetings
@@danielgomez2933 she has over 20 #1 singles on Canada in total, more than half were from 1990 onwards, so I wouldn't say she was huge JUST in the 80s, she was an international chart beast until about 2008-2009, hit after hit in every country, her albums still debut at #1 but her singles aren't as successful in the last 10 years which is normal for an older 50 plus year old act
Damn, Madonna actually has 24#1 singles in Canada for in total, 10 in the 80s, 8 in the 90s and 6 from 2000-2012, more than anyone male or female in Canadian chart history
This is the first video I've found for past Canadian music charts on RU-vid and I hope there will eventually be more. As expected from looking into Canada's top 100 year-end lists online, the Canadian charts are quite similar to those in the US, with some minor differences. Some of the most surprising differences were seeing that Rapper's Delight and Rock Lobster managed to be number 1 hits, and that Red, Red Wine was a hit in 1984 (although I already knew it topped the charts in the UK in 1983, so that might explain this) when it didn't top the US charts until 1988. Of the songs that didn't top the charts in the US, my favorites have got to be Rapper's Delight, Emotional Rescue, Cars, Every Little Thing She Does is Magic, Tainted Love, Urgent, The Look of Love, Gloria, Sexual Healing, Electric Avenue, Hungry Like the Wolf, White Wedding, Oh, Sherri, Conga, La Isla Bonita, Don't Dream It’s Over, Beds Are Burning, and Mixed Emotions. Kudos also to 99 Luftballoons and to Rock Lobster's unexpected success. Looking forward to seeing some of the other videos you've put out for other countries.
Cool classy Canada rules what a list and what they were into and respect to some beauties here so sad mostly but happy tho indeed got to live it but want to return to the greatest decade of all time never to forget miss it so much oh hail the 80s lots of emotions running around and what was goin on in the Charts
You really took to Rick! 4 number ones! He only had the one here in the UK, Never Gonna Give You Up. Mind you, that was our best-selling single of 1987.
great work! A lot of the songs were top 10 hits in Australia but strangely enough not many were on your list made No 1 in Australia. Some not released here at all and some were hits here the previous year before they charted in Canada
Is there a 90's version of this video by any chance? That would be an awesone addition should you ever be looking for another video to make. 😜😜 Appreciate all your hard work buddy. 💞💕
i love to watch there types of list and it's interesting to see what was succesful where and having watched list of no1 hit in other countries like Germany where there was a mix of international hits and kinda traditional folk music and Dance little bird for 8 weeks, i am almost surprise that i wasnt more surprise by this list as it seemed more homogeneous and less weirder but anyway lots of great music there ^^
Great! But... Canada, USA, Britain....come with the same pack of singles again and again..... Wish you could follow with from France charts.... or from Quebec charts...
The reason was back in the 1980's there was a "cultural protectionism" in place in North America applied by record companies. During that decade around 95% of the music played on radio and on MuchMusic (Canada's MTV) were from performers from Canada, The United States, the UK, Australia and New Zealand. During the 1980's music video became the #1 promotion tool for music artists. If you were a musical artist that wasn't from the countries previously mentioned (mostly artists from Continental Europe) and wanted airtime on both radio and TV you had to come out with an "out of this world music video" to get that airtime. The best example of this was the Norwegian band A-Ha with the song "Take On Me" which got plenty of airtime because of the popularity of the music video. Many non-british music acts in Europe such as Valerie Dore, Sandra, Modern Talking, Ken Laszlo and many others who were big musical acts in Europe in the 1980's never got their music played here in Canada because of that "cultural protectionism" that was in place. If you simply look at the year-end-charts here in Canada and in the United States (Billboard) during the 1980's you will find out that the number of musical artists that were not from Canada, USA, UK, Australia and New Zealand on those year-end-charts.....you can count them on the fingers of one hand.
The work you have done is highly appreciated! What a nice treat at 1 a.m...... As for the list itself - it's probably a basic soundtrack for the whole decade, only "Careless Whisper" was missing (I had to check it on Wikipedia, which says that on two Canadian charts this single went to number 1, but on the last one - The Record's Retail Singles Chart - only came to second place). Fortunately, there were also some interesting facts, eg 3:39 "The Friends of Mr Cairo" Jon & Vangelis (this song is almost 12 minutes long!), 5:28 "Dirty Laundry" by Don Henley, 11:25 "Neutron Dance" by The Pointer Sisters, 24:46 "Pop Singer" by John Mellencamp. Compared to the UK and US singles of Elton John and The Rolling Stones did far better. Suprisingly, I think there were three performers from German-speaking countries (Nena, Falco, Peter Schilling), but was there even one song in French? And how was Bryan Adams rated in Canada?
all classics 💖💖 this shows that Canada has lots of commun taste with Europe speaking of Music 🥰🤘🏼Thanks for Rick Rollin" us 🤣🤣 Falco nr 1 !!! Happy to see that Madonna , Phil Collins & George Michael were on top :) but surprised that Bryan Addams was not nr 1 in his own country but he was several times across Europe 😮
I heard a ton of these songs here in the US when I grew up in the '80s. There were a ton of American and British acts hitting the top of the RPM chart just like the No. 1 hits on my country's Hot 100, but I'm happy to see some Canadian acts get the top spot in their own country in the '80s. I'm surprised that Bryan Adams in particular didn't have a No. 1 hit on the RPM chart during that decade ("Heaven" topped the Hot 100 in '85).
Some of the songs that topped the Canadian charts are virtually unknown here in the USA, and not just ones by Canadian artists. Seems like there were some British/European hits mixed in (e.g. Jennifer Rush, Doctor and the Medics) but this is of course a mostly American-leaning list of songs.
The two biggest surprises for me were: I expected Corey Hart to have a lot of #1s in his native Canada, but 'Sunglasses at Night' only got to 24? The other surprise...Bop by Dan Seals????
Madonna 10 @nd could have been more. What about Into de Groove. Material Girl or Open your Heart. Borderline deserved mucho mucho mucho more in the charts but... was the beginning....
Canada has always had a much better taste than the USA. Fantastic video but I'm a bit surprised Bryan Adams didn't have any #1 songs in his native country. Not even Heaven, Summer of '69 and Run to You??
I wish Canadian artists had done better. My music collection is heavily influenced by Canadian 80's. Bryan Adams, Glass Tiger Gowan, T'pau, Sheree, Candi (& the Backbeat), One to One (all spellings), Alias, Platinum Blonde, Brighton Rock, Chilliwack, Luba, Zappacosta, TU, Haywire, Alanis, Gino Vannelli, Parachute Club, Red Rider, Chantal (not Kreviazuk), Honeymoon Suite, BLVD (Boulevard), The Box, Corey Hart, Eight Seconds...
******************************** Is this compilation of #1 hits provided from "The Record" or from "RPM"? Back in the 1980's these were the two magazines that made the weekly chart compilation in Canada and on several occasions their weekly #1 were not the same.
