The same happened to Pope Pius XII, when the commies perpetuated the lie that he was silent about the evil happenings during World War II - when, in fact, he saved lots of lives. Catholics, like me, were fed lots of road apples through the media and by the infiltrator teachers at Catholic schools who were as Catholic as Uncle Joe Stalin. Heard about it, assumed it was kids dying from diseases due to residential schools being isolated and the story being inflamed. Now I’m even more bothered, but that’s our media for ya, eh?
For anyone who doesn't know all this started years ago when the government started giving reparations to people whose kids died in the schools (actual tragedies like Cholera and the Spanish Flu) so Natives had a financial incentive to claim their loved ones died there.
Such policies were a mistake. Hell, reservations being a thing in either nation was a mistake. Amalgamation into a greater Canadian or American whole should have been the goal. Even beyond that, what conquered people before these former colonial nation types ever reserved special land with special privileges in perpetuity for conquered peoples like this?
a lot of this stuff that was actually happening in these schools, in the foster care system was long past the age of the Spanish Flu. residential schools were still a thing in Canada until the 1990's.

@forsociopoliticalstuff2629 Reservations were, at conception, nothing but ghettos for Natives (look up the original meaning of "ghetto" from the 1930s). Even today, reservation populations are essentially second-class vassal states within the larger country. You're correct that including Native tribes/nations/etc into a greater whole would be ideal, but at this point it's going to get a LOT of push back. Look at Oklahoma, where the tribes actually forced the government to finally honor a few pieces of the current binding treaty, and people from both parties came unglued.
I am very happy your bringing more attention to this story. I work for Catholic Cemeteries within an archdiocese of Canada and have many Catholic families including aboriginal ones tell me how embarrassed they felt when the Catholic Church and the pope apologized constantly for an entire year for something that obviously did not happen. I am very sorry for you. Yes, everyone should be aware that most people of any race will attack someone else from another group. It is how humans are wired. One of my big issues with the Left - along with starvation, economy wrecking, genocide against minority groups and dissenters (it is okay when Commies do it for some reason) - is how they deny agency to non-Whites and women. Non-white/non-Euro people can be every bit as nasty as anyone else. My Dad always said, "Most people are both 'sheeple' and assholes, it's the few that aren't who'll be your friends. Don't worry about the ones who hate you but go the extra mile for the ones who love you." I've lived by that maxim. I have an Amer-Indian couple in my area who swear by what is effectively an anti-White and anti-Catholic blood libel......when I've brought up the fact that A) while abuse was certainly there, there is no evidence that there were mass graves and B) there was also child abuse at convent schools in (then) majority white Catholic countries and areas and why don't they condemn THAT abuse too, they - I kid you not - say "meh!" Yes, you read that right, they both said "meh!" Sadly, most people are only interested in power for their in-group, VERY few people of any race are moralists on principle. Horrible to realize but it is reality. Find the few people that are genuinely moral and hold onto them for they are special.
Spend decades undereducating black and indigenous people, then spend another decade nurturing their grievances, and that's a pretty effective way to create revolutionary mobs. She grew up in a catholic home & went to a catholic school and church. As far as I know none of the nuns harassed let alone caused violence against her. Apparently when her grandparents got married and had my great grandma not a whole lot people saw an issue with it. @@midgitpower1187 Perhaps in the U.S.A., but in Canada residential schools accepted (ie it was voluntary) kids from villages too small for their own schools. Often the residential school would serve a large geographical area, taking in kids from many miles away, too far to go home on weekends or public holidays, and would have a day school for local kids. Alert Bay BC is such an example. Kids from the neighbouring islands stayed in residential school, local kids attended day school. (The local kids tended to look down on their hick 'cousins' from out of town). Note also, that public school in Alert Bay only went to Grade 10. All students continuing on had to go by ferry or water taxi to Port MacNeil, where the school has dormitories for overnighters or Monday to Friday students. I have many nieces and nephews who have native 'status' both on my side and my wife's side. One of the older relatives (on the other side of the country, Hudsons Bay, very remote) was the "lucky" one (of several children) who "got to go to school" and had no complaints about mistreatment. it has been happening for decades. Media is just actually carrying it now. People in Canada are ignorant as to the truth of what happened to the First Nations people in Canada by the government/churches/foster care system. The number of graves didn't match, but tragedies did.
They taught me in highschool about the unmarked residential school graves. Guess I shouldn't be surprised about that being a lie as well. It always stood out to me how they treated residential schools as if they were the worst thing in the world but somehow expected us to fully trust public schooling when it was doing much of the same. I guess in that case the graves made for a convenient lie as to say "See residential schools were much worse they actually killed people and therefore any and all comparisons between us and them should be discarded because we don't do that"
I am a practicing catholic (St Thomas catholic - syro Malabar church) and a Canadian. To all my brothers and sisters in Christ, yes it hurts to be persecuted. Let’s remind ourselves of Christ’s message to us “if the world hates you, remember that it hated me first.” His church will not cease to exist because it is built on the true word of the living God. Ave Christus Rex.
As a Canadian this is literally the first I’ve heard of this. We heard so much about the supposed mass graves but now that it’s proven they don’t exist the media here is silent. I realize that the residential schools were horrible places and the kids were not treated well. But that doesn’t make it ok to lie about them to make them sound worse, and it most certainly doesn’t make it ok to burn churches.
I’m not going to justify what they did but a lot of them burned church’s since it was a sign of anger, like imagine if there were a bunch of Muslims residents schools forcing you to be a Muslim and if you still have beliefs in Christ you would be punished for it, and then when you find out there mass graves at those places they would most likely burn some things down no?
@@midgitpower1187 no, I definitely would not go and burn down mosques in that scenario. I worked next to a reserve, the week after the big BC mass grave story broke, someone from the reserve was in our store talking about it. Their take on it? They had family who lived next to the one found. It was known by the locals and the cemetery taken care of by family of the children who died during a pandemic back then. Unlike recent pandemics, ones back in the 60's actually killed people and was devastating. It's also kind of sad that the Church was attacked, while at the same time, Indigenous have given full control of their daily lives to the government. Entire people groups were cut off during Covid, by the government, for their "safety." You can't make it up. While rioting about the government destroying their lives, they were cutting themselves off from the world and relying totally on the government
yeah its becoming increasingly apparent that large media companies should be held more legally liable for the damage caused by their reporting. gotta be real careful with the laws to make sure you don't turn all media into state media but yeah there probably should be some measures in place to punish an increasingly common behavior found amongst the media.
I remember back in the 90s when Liberal professors in my university completely denied that the Residential School system even existed, only to then believe this BS a few years ago. And in the end, it was just tree roots.
I remember them finding one of these "mass graves" and excavating it only to discover that, surprise surprise, it was just an ordinary native graveyard where the wooden grave markers had rotted away.
Yeah, they made a big deal of "ground X-rays" finding lots of child bones, but in fact what the X-rays really detected were gnarled tree-roots instead!
