Hot water shouldn't be accessible to mental health patients. You take their shoe strings and other clothing, but give them access to hot water?? The hospital I worked at wouldn't even leave a microwave in our break room in case a patient accidentally made it in there.

I was a nurse for 40 years before I retired and violence from patients or their family members increased over the years. My roommate had a patient throw hot tea on her face because she was angry about not getting a meal as soon as she arrived to the ward from the ER. She was not mentally ill. We are trained to watch out for violence from patients who are mentally unstable or confused from their disease process, but it is hard to understand why people abuse those who are trying to help them.
@Tyrvana

Just a lot of hatred built up over the years and then you get to a point where you don't care who it is or even if they are innocent or trying to help you, basically you are just so wounded emotionally/mentally. Then some people are just "evil" by nature.

Hi, fellow nurse here! 🙋🏻‍♀️ Starting my 27th year. I've worked in a plethora of areas. I can tolerate the abuse from mentally ill, dementia and combative Alzheimer's pts. Of course I didn't enjoy it but I understood it because those people cannot help it and they're not in their right mind. What I cannot tolerate is abuse (verbal and physical) from someone who IS in their right mind and is just being an asshole!

I wonder how the patient got accessibilty to boiling water. You would think that they would not be allowed anywhere close to things like this. I had to go into a mental health facility for a few days back in December of 2016. I pray for the nurses safety that work in this environment and also the patients to get the help they need. Hopefully! They get better services there than here in the United states. Even with insurance their in a hurry to get them out ASAP. Then they leave end up commiting suicide or homicide. 14:41

The burn patient’s mom annoyed me. It’s like she is expecting her daughter to get hurt at her job and is happy with it. Her daughter is not a firefighter, she’s a nurse. She shouldn’t be getting severely injured at her job. Her mother needs to get her head out of her butt. If that was my daughter I would not tell her to live out her dream at that place of work I would tell her to find a workplace where safety is the employer’s priority for the employees.

My then 7yr old son had stitches in his back rip open and I had to take him back to the drs to have it all redone (it had been a mole removal). So the local anaesthetic had to go into the open wound and he was not pleased. Calming him did not work at all, and I have to add that from birth he was the most chilled and placid easy going boy. In the end, all bribes attempted not having worked, I had to pin him down (while crying as I felt so bad) and he fought like mad but it was the only thing that could be done to fix this big gaping hole in his back. Once the local anaesthetic worked he was fine but I know that it hurt like heck before that. He was an angel getting the stitches and we went straight to the toy shop and got some presents for him, he had been so good. But it was very traumatic for him and he remembers it as though it was yesterday and he now 33. You cannot mollycoddle then for everything, it’s not easy but you just have to do it.

11:44 I really feel for the nurse who was burned 😢. On my 15th birthday I was opening presents and an explosion rocked my house from the garage where my dad was fixing someones car. His whole body was on fire above his head down to his feet. He was a fireman in our small community and most of my family are first responders. So needless to say everyone came they already knew where we lived. After fireman threw my sis and I out of the house the garage was attached to. He looked as though he'd been through a meat shredder. Most of his body was 3rd degree or worse, as my mom led him through the house his clothes and skin were melting off, and starting little fires my friends stomped them out. Thank the Lord my Birthday is in February and we had just gotten a lot of snow so my mom pushed him backward into the fluffy snow and covered his body with it. That coupled with the fire chief already having the water truck out and running doing his daily checks he got the call saving precious time, as well as everyone knowing where to go. Initially, my sis grabbed me and said our cat had gone upstairs above the fire we had to go find him. I had no shoes on and my feet were starting to burn. The fire had gotten to the wood the rug was nailed to. I bent down to look under the bed and had a vision of falling down into the fire. At this point we could barely see or breathe, so I ran back out to the top of the steps were I met my sis again. She screamed jump (down the staircase) before I could comprehend what she had said she grabbed my hand and we were falling down the stairs, when a smaller explosion threw us off the rest of the steps. I fireman picked us up one under each arm and pushed us out the door. That's when I saw dad without the fire, wrapped in a towel around his waist, he was staring at his hands which were practically meat and bones. Thank God for him having very calloused hands and having steel toed boots on or he would have lost them all. His legs looked as though someone had just pulled his flesh and muscles off. He was taken by helicopter to Allentown. He did survive but with burns and skin grafts everywhere and lots of time to recover. I still have nightmares and have the worst phobia of fire. It was all the little things that saved him. Even my Grammy had gone for a walk when it happened or she most likely would have had a heart attack. My dad took the medivac helicopter twice but only came back once. The last time was an aortic embolism, I got to talk to him, that was the first and last time my dad said goodbye when he got off the phone. He had always said goodbye is forever so he always said see ya later or something like that. I didn't realize how much he had taught me until he was gone. But at least my daughters and I got to say goodbye, most people don't get that. RIP Daddy! 😢❤

I had my labor induced when an impulsive handicapped young boy hit me in the stomach. It wasn’t done intentionally and I had to bring my baby outside to the inclosed fence so he could see she and I were okay. I have dealt with detoxing patients and at the same time have gained amazing memories from my experience. Even working medical a nurse can be injured badly by patients. So one thing some docs say is it can be really hard for parents to know how hard they are holding a child when their kid is panicking because of adrenalin and it actually causes loads of injuries unintentionally. (I only know this because my mum broke my brothers arm doing the something similar and the ER doc and police explained). So its a catch 22 - more movement by the kid is obviously not helping, but the kid could also get hurt if he's not helped the right way.

From the shine on her skin I would think they had treated her with AeroBurn (gel or spray) and it looked like she was holding hydrogel sheets to her face and chest. They're rapid cooling, hydrating and pain-relieving.

@@lakotafire2804Clingfilm actually is a recognized first aid technique, it helps keep the wound clean and prevents moisture from leaving the burn, causing dangerous dehydration (if no other option is available and it's going to be a bit for you to get to a hospital). Although in this case they put wet gauze, which is the ideal dressing first.

I had a glass lime lemonade bottle explode and the neck of it went across my ankle, sliced and left a deep wound with blood everywhere. St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne Australia had the surgeons there so quickly but they also stuck their gloved fingers into my wound and my husband fainted in the hallway when he saw it, No pain relief beforehand either, it wasn’t pleasant. Had to have microsurgery as the nerves and tendons had been severed. This was 1981 and my foot has been screwed ever since, it has never recovered. So many further surgeries all attempting to prevent toes curling under, pins put in my toes, left for 6 weeks and them pulled out with pliers with no anaesthetic at all. Now that I’m ancient it is even worse than it was.

Young Christie is such a beautiful young lady. I was matched to the acute psych unit on my first nursing job. They give you a survey and then match you to a position that coincides with the answers you give. You don’t know that when it’s given. I was quite surprised, I wanted to take care of babies. But I loved it. I found the work incredibly interesting. I loved talking to my patients. I spent a lot of time with them on the day shift. Night shift sucked. A lot of abuse happens on psych wards. Both by and to the patients. I was kicked by a delusional patient, it took months for my leg to heal and the hematoma to resolve. The patient apologized after coming back to reality. And I still loved my job. I understand how Christie feels, it takes a special kind to work on a psych unit, which is what they told me when they hired me. But I didn’t tolerate patient abuse. I reported it if I saw it or knew it happened.

I can't believe for the guy with the stab wound, the doctor just shoved his finger in the wound yo measure its depth and path!! Give the guy dome drugs first! Or numb the area! It'll need stitches anyway! If someone said "We need to have a look at your wound, is that ok?" I'd think they wanted to see how large it appears, and how much blood there is. Not that they're gonna stick something in my raw excruciating wound!

@@madelainemadelaine2934 This is also true. It's always been my experience that if the parent remains calm, the child will. It makes me absolutely crazy when a parent is completely freaking out over a minor inoculation, a few sutures or something relatively minor. The kids always feed off their parent's energy and then they start freaking out. It's even worse when we have a serious/critical situation and its crucial that the parent remain calm yet they can't seem to hold it together for their own child.
