My favorite nursery “hack” is to keep a small storage tote in the room/closet for “memories”. So much paperwork and other sentimental items come in during the first year. The smaller bin (vs a jumbo tote) keeps it in check but allows for a safe place for special little items.

I have 3 kids under 4. Their fave game when I'm breastfeeding baby is to take out all the bins from their carefully organized dressers and dump all the clean clothes all over their room. When they're feeling extra, they mix it in with the dirty clothes. I'm so over it so I made a system in their closet which I can lock so they can't access their clothes. It's way less efficient but my blood pressure couldn't handle it!!

Sounds to ME (and this is just MY humble opinion) like a busy mama of 3 tiny humans - doing what tiny humans do - who figured out a workable solution to something that was causing her headaches. It sounds like she's just handling life in her own personal best way! Judging a stranger's parenting based on a few sentences on an internet video isn't always fair. We would all do well to give each other a little bit of grace now and then ❤ much love!

We put baby locks on EVERYTHING! 😂 We have three 4 and under and one on the way... They were doing the same. The only accessible drawers and cupboards have things they ARE allowed to play with. We even actually have baskets we hung from hangers filled with their socks so they can't reach them and tear them apart. Hahaha #momlife

One thing to note - The white dresser is pretty short. I am 5'9 and I will be hunching over to even change the baby. The drawers are also very low so you really have to bend over to get anything from it. Love the way it looks, but when we viewed in Ikea it was on the second shelf so I did not notice how tall it actually was. I should have measure in the space but after watching this video just thought it would work. Luckily my husband is buying a some risers or making a platform for me as I am 20 weeks and even putting the laundry in the drawers is hurting my back. Just a thing to think about before purchasing!

A tip to make the blackout curtains more effective: instead of using a decorative or straight curtain rod, use the old school ones that wrap around. They're really cheap in big box stores, and bring the curtains back around to the wall/window frame.

They have really nice and decorated ones as well. I have a double rod one. Works great for layering and adding color and texture but practical as well. I got a curtain with the holes on top that makes it easy to close and open. I find that the fabric ties ones or inserted in fabric ones are hard to close abc open. Makes such a difference.

I watched this because I love a useful, convenient space and I wanted to see someone else’s ideas. As I’m watching, I’ve discovered I’ve done the same thing in my daughter’s nursery. The dresser instead of changing table, organizers/dividers in the dresser, ruggable, wall book shelves! These ideas have definitely been useful and convenient in her nursery!

I also have a ruggable rug in my baby's room, and I love that they're thin enough to put pads underneath. We just got some super cheap harbor freight anti-fatigue mats and putting them under the ruggle rug is still smooth and no tripping hazard!

I like the "outgrown box". We keep a bin in the attic with the next size of clothes and cloth diapers. My kids share a room, #3 is due in a month and there will be no more nurseries in this house... We never used a changing table, we just threw the kids on any surface to change them. We use a rolling cart which hold diapers/blankets/burp cloths/wipes in the living room/dining area, which is literally where we spend 95% of our time. We also have a rolling cart which holds all of our homeschool material. I'm convinced rolling carts are the best home hack of our generation!

My kid never had blackout curtains. As a baby she had white shades so for naps her room was just a little dim, but nowhere near dark. She slept like sleeping beauty and I could even go in and vacuum her room without waking her. As for myself, I slept without curtains for years! Love the natural light seeping in, in the morning.

I am long past the days of having a newborn but I still enjoyed watching this video. You have come up with some great solutions to what can be big problems! I especially like the way you organize the dresser drawers. This habit will serve you well as your kids grow out of baby and toddler days. They will know where to put their clean clothes and what goes where. The rugs in your kids’ rooms are really gorgeous. I remember the day my six years old son puked all the way from his bed, into the hall, and across to the bathroom. Of course there was carpet on the hallway floor. Nasty! That was just a nasty job. Good luck with your delivery and I can’t wait for your birth announcement; I don’t imagine you can wait for it either! LOL ♥️

Some really clever ideas. The blackout window treatment idea is good for a variety of situations. I’m going to offer a different perspective on newborn sleeping. My son was born in winter and had jaundice. (He was born a month early) he slept with therapeutic lights for the first week+ of his life. He needed some kind of light source at night for several years afterward.

With respect to window coverings, if you mount your curtain rod close to the ceiling and at least a foot wider than the window itself, and then have curtains that are nice and full (fabric should be 2.5 times your actual window width) and that go long, close to the floor is awesome, that sort of mounted curtain plus blinds block out ALL the light, no magnets or fancy tricks required. Also, those are pretty much all standard decorator’s tips for mounting curtains anyways. They look good open and closed.

I bought two dressers and made them into a changing station. One in the living room and one in the bedroom. It just made sense to buy a dresser instead. I personally can sleep just fine whether there’s light or not. I used to be extremely scared of the dark as a kid so I would keep the lights on. I think I’m just gonna let her sleep with naturally dark room without trying to make it darker. It just makes it easier when you’re an adult

Don't think you need to but my expensive furniture...Cube shelves are great for baby/kid rooms because they're super versatile. We have large unit in my son's room (make sure to use the wall anchors); some shelves have books, extra diapers and wipes are in a bin, shoes on another shelf, a bin on the bottom holds some toys, blankets are in a cube, etc. My daughter's room has the same thing happening on just a standard bookcase with some dollar tree plastic baskets (I use them in my drawes for socks too)

Try using a curtain rod that has a curve and hang it correctly not just aligned with the window frame. Light doesn’t come though the sides cause the curtains are on the sides of the frame of the window. I notice how much people incorrectly hang curtain rods that it is the most common mistake people make. Your not suppose to line a curtain rod with the window frame/trim. The curtains are suppose to cover the window frame or trim. Just a thought to help with lighting not coming though. Also you could do a double rod to have two curtain layers one that is sheer or lighter also to add color (maybe you could use the color one you originally was going to use) more see though for the day to get light and the other a black out curtain for night. But I have found that a curved or wrap bar/rod works great.

@JanaeCrawford

So for not allowing the light to come in through the sides of the blackout curtains amazon actually sells curved curtain rod which is what I use in my daughters room. It curves around at the top instead of a typical straight bar, so when you pull the curtains over it doesn’t just go straight across they curve around the side blocking the front and side light.

I was gifted a changing table, and thus felt obligated to use it. Not only is it super wobbly and takes up space that could be better used, but she’s outgrown it at not even 18 months. The dresser is so much better.

You could also use Velcro to hold the curtain edges

Honestly, I've never had blackout curtains for my girls and they sleep just fine. I think it depends on the kid.

Same! I have 3 kids never had blackout curtains. Our power went out the other night and my 4 month old screamed and cried so much until I got a camping lantern set up in our room, My 3 year old and 6 year old need some light to sleep too.

I think it would also depend on what side of the house the nursery is on (windows) , size of windows, as well as the season ! I had a winter baby where it was dark at 4p.m so bed time was easy. I have also had a baby in Summer and her nursery had a large double window facing East so she had alot more light coming in and to as late as midnight. It really does just depend on the specific home, child, etc.

It definitely does! My son sleeps with blackout curtains at home, but at my aunts he will nap without anything on the windows at all!

In the bedrooms i dont have decorative curtain rods. I use the whir ones that kinda wrap around the whole window so the the curtain blocks the whole window.

Labels also make it super easy for other people to know where things go if someone wants to help (yay friends and family who do a little laundry and picking up).

Yes I was going to say that as well. Labels are wonderful for helpers!!! Also they eventually are tools for little ones learning to read!!

I wonder if you could use a command strip to attach the magnet to the wall. If the magnet was strong enough to place the second magnet over top of the curtain to hold in place instead of gluing it to the curtain.
