Nut DriverS Just a Screwdriver with a Socket Driven Nuts
A nut driver is a tool for tightening nuts and bolts. It essentially consists of a socket attached to a shaft and cylindrical handle and is similar in appearance and use to a screwdriver. They generally have a hollow shaft to accommodate a shank onto which a nut is threaded. Nut drivers are ideal tools for use in low torque applications.
Common industries that use in the drivers are heating ventilation and air-conditioning HVAC, plumbing, electronics, electrical or electricians, large and small appliance repair, installers (Cable, TV, Internet, and other utilities)
The hollow shafts nut drivers can be extremely useful as solve several problems if you face fasteners that have long threads. I can’t really think why I would but the solid shaft set. Over the years the most common places I have used a nut driver might include: car interior dash fasteners, underdash and firewall fastneners, engine bay components , small and large appliances, electronics, small engines like lawnmowers, weed eaters, and and even motorcycles as well as bicycles. Anywhere the nut is torqued only to hand tight they are quick and useful in my life.
Unless used daily and a lot, I feel the Matco and SnapOn nut driver sets are so high priced it’s hard to justify. It’s more time and cost efficient to buy a ratcheting screwdriver, a 1/4" hex to 1/4" sq. drive adaptor and use a sockets and be done. Plus you get the beneift of potentially having a magnetic tip to hold the nut that most nut drivers do not have. I honestly really like different length nut setters as they can be used with power tools or in a hand tool and take up less space.

I love nut drivers but fully agree with what u r saying. Your logic makes more sense. I use ratchets and sockets and also nutdrivers. But I know the colors on the nut driver. I swear I crank in nut drivers more than anything and yes a socket would work better. Honest truth I guess. Self reflect

Nut drivers are good for having hollow shafts to get those nuts with thread protruding over it

I work as a food service technician. The best nut driver I have used is the companion brand from craftsman. Same set you have in your drawer just in SAE so the colors are different. The rubberized grips are perfect if your hands are filled with grease or wet it will not slip out of your hands. The color markings make it quick to identify what size you need. The shaft of the nut driver is hex towards the handle so if you need the extra torque you can use a open end wrench. Unsure if they still sell them but in my opinion best money spent. I would recommend hollow shafts, soft grips, hex shaft and colored body for ease of identification.

I would say a nut driver is nice to have when you need it. I've purchased several sets over the past couple years an have no idea where they all are. Just like the 10mm socket, they tend to just vanish. Works great when working on washers and dryers since the metal on todays appliances is thinner and more prone to screws stripping out.

Good video, I have the Klein set and a Greenlee set (both sets have all of the main sizes needed to open electrical panel boxes and communication panel boxes) . . . something worth mentioning is that the Nut Driver set by Carlyle (Napa) have an added benefit of a 3/8 ratchet hole on the very top of the handle that turns each nut driver into a extended socket. . . . .also if you will go to Google and search for "Greenlee Insulated Nut Driver Set" . You will see that Greenlee takes nut drivers to an entirely different level. (Wiha & Wera makes a similar insulated sets, but the Greenlee insulated set that demolishes the insulated sets by the German brands . . . . the irony is that the Greenlee insulated set can be purchased for less than money than the German brands)

It's worth mentioning that Klein now has some that are hollow all the way through the handle, and can actually go over threaded rods. I don't know how often that would be important, but it does seem like a nice future to have that one never knows when it might be needed.

I keep a set of Wera hollow shaft nut drivers (They don't have a 9/16) and I have 4 Milwaukee nut driver bits on a key chain hooked on my belt loop that I pop on a bit driver if I don't need the hollow shaft.

Have the Klein 7 in 1 and have hated it since day one! Still haven’t figured out how to make up all the variables and the pieces are all over the place! I feel that the main problem with a nut driver is always the depth of the socket! The Milwaukee 7 piece hollow body set is in a class of its own, won’t break the bank and is very well made!

My personal favorite solution is to use longer power blade style bits in a Felo smart driver, which converts between a screwdriver and a t-driver format. The nice thing about the power blades is that they are hollow shaft to a certain point just like the screwdrivers, yet can also be used in a drill or impact driver (though they may not be impact rated).

On you cover photo for this video you show the old Sears Companion nut drivers. I had them too. Still using my USA made 14pc Craftsman set that replaced those or my Task Force USA bought from Lowe’s. Yep, before Lowe’s killed the brand they had lots of USA Task Force early on. Pretty sure they were made by Great Neck.

Intriguing video, @ClientGraphics. 👍 I can generally get by with sockets and extensions, but there are rare occasions when I could really use a set of hollow-shaft nut drivers. I might pick up the Wera SAE & Metric sets that you mentioned. Cheers, man. 🥃😎

The Icon nut driver handles look big in the package. They are Tri Lobe anti roll handles. The 2023 Labor day coupon was $29.99 for each set a pretty good value. Nice chrome plating and warranty. The Icon handle material does not feel brittle. Disadvantage. All 14 nut drivers easily fill a small zippered tool bag. A little tough to find the nut driver you need fast. I don't have a truck size rolling tool box with drawers. The Ideal 4 piece nut driver set has a larger 5/16" included. The set was on clearance $14.99 and all 4 have magnets. Store your magnetic nut drivers properly or they might grab any metal particles making a mess. The multi nut drivers are convenient or handy in their own way. My Lenox multi nut driver has a hole for added leverage. The Craftsman multi nut driver has a leverage hole too. Don't own that one yet. Note: A few nut drivers are more slender or compact for small work areas. Note: Several nut driver brands have hollow shaft nut driver shafts that are approximately 1 inch deep. Immediately check the hollow shaft depths and return within the return window if desired. Good luck.

I have a challenge for you. When I was in Europe on a job, I saw a mechanic who had a set of nut drivers which were not only hollow shafted, but the top of the handle had a receptacle for a socket wrench. Was in too much of a hurry to get the brand but have been searching for this set now for a few years with no success. I also saw an episode of Wheeler Dealers where Ed Chyna used these nut drivers. Why don’t all nut drivers accept a 1/4 or 3/8 ratchet? It would add an enormous degree of functionality to them.
@1vw4me

KOBALT makes a set of these that accepts a 1/4" ratchet on the head.

While they do work, IMO sockets on screwdrivers/spinners are just a jury-rigged nut driver and don't have the full capabilities of the dedicated instruments (Such as the nuts at the bottoms of bolts). Anyway just got the set the Commercial Electric one and I can see the potential!

Hey - I just subscribed to your channel because I like how you explained this in this video. I have a question for you. I am trying to replace the capacitor on my HVAC and need to loosen a nut, but the nut is very close to the ground ground and pointing towards the ground. This means I can't get the nut driver underneath it. I was wonder what tool is appropriate here? A socket wrench?

Those spline drive nut driver's with both metric and SAE sizes on one driver suck ass, don't use your money on them unless they are specifically for sae, or metric otherwise you just get a nut driver that doesn't fit anything, or strips everything.
