A fantastic video with a great insight in Nvidia through the years. I'm not going to lie, I was extremely oblivious to most of these, although this somehow doesn't surprise me at all. Jim, you're amazing for even taking the time to talk about this. Saddest thing about this is that I feel you've spent so much time on something not many people will see, and most of those who do will just not believe you because they've already been tainted, so to say, as I was years back. I took an extremely pessimistic view on the whole Tech industry in the last 4 or 5 years because of situations and developments like these. Great job, again. Kinda long though, but you know how to keep people's attention. I was planning to watch this in a few viewings but I guess I didn't.

Ad Victoriam No one said AMD never did shady and shitty stuff, but this video is not about them. One might be though. They're not perfect, none is. It's hard for a market to compete when you actively attack the competition. That'd be like shooting someones leg and saying that it's not your fault he can't run anymore.

so why haven't they released this technology is it because just like Intel they want to grind as much money from people by making people think that they have the Fastest and best product no matter what the cost just for Bragging rights before they are forced to release a better product that will benefit the public i think so but apparently you don't

Exactly my thoughts after watching this. Their "Meant to be played" is either we the consumers or the market - but I'm positive it's both. The sad thing is there are sheeps that herds to this company no matter what. This company and Intel dances to the same tune that is why they don't get along too well.

I really dislike Nvidia as a company, but my last few cards have been Nvidia simply because their hardware met my needs from a price/performance perspective, their driver upgrade process is generally very smooth etc. I wish AMD could sort out their drivers/control panel/performance and efficiency to really give Nvidia a run for their money again. I realize by supporting them, it's not helping the situation, but AMD cards just have not been competitive from a performance/heat/noise etc. perspective.

for the most part, if a tech channel puts out a 5+ minute video on a product its likely a shill video where they got it for free and are padding the time to maximize youtube red and time watched, I can skip that till I want to sleep. when they do it at the beginning of a tech cycle, ill usually give the benefit of the doubt and look at it because its new product time and have to dust off the old benchmarks but when its something like this, fuck it, take as long as you want, im willing to watch it.

Hey! We're two years in the future, Nvidia has a somewhat (? AMD was able to run it on their card) proprietary implementation of hardware ray tracing, DLSS and other new things! Like the RTX audio thing which everyone got crazy about it when it's just a simple background noise reduction? Or the upcoming streaming thing that allows you to stream only your face without needing a green screen (I'm sure this could have been open source, but since open source software doesn't get any publicity, nobody uses it)? They also sold a 2070 for the price of a _cut down_ 2080 with a less cut down 2080 ti that's even more money and then make it seem as though they suddenly gained _twice_ the performance when the 3080 (their "flagship" (their words. not mine)) is actually the successor to the 2080ti and is only a 30% gain with ridiculous power draw, no availability at launch and broken cards that crash for the few people that got them. What a fucking joke. And the worst into all of this? If AMD makes a _single_ minuscule mistake when they launch their next generation, both the nvidia and the AMD blame will entirely shift to AMD once again.

Its just not popular and wont attract the average viewer... And that is what is hurting everyone. People get very attached to their purchases/preferred vendor, they become an extension of their own ego (this is of course, not healthy), so of course validating their purchases is also validating themselves, and consequently they feel they need to challenge anything that might call their purchasing decisions into question.

This is just not true at all. It is absolutely possible to be considerate of your customers and act in a morally respectable fashion(morals being subjective, acting in a fashion that society considers generally acceptable) while still maximizing market share gains & profits. The problem is that we've cultivated a society that doesn't give a shit about doing their job within the marketplace. There's this ridiculous belief that one of the purposes of government is to police businesses within the market, to make sure that everyone is playing 'fair', acting in a considerate fashion towards consumers, and of course preventing monopolies. A group of people that lied to you to get into a position of power, that you KNOW lied to you(we all JOKE about politicians telling lies that they don't fulfill, just to get your approval to take a position of power), and that are caught with regularity breaking their own laws that we've empowered them to write & enact just to fill their own pockets in the end, these are the people in our society that we've 'chosen' to police the market? Why? Because everyone is LAZY, of course, and doesn't WANT to research the products that they purc, the companies that they do business with. So, instead of the individual consumer doing their due diligence and voting with their wallet for the companies whose business practices they support, everyone just says "...well, we gave that job to THOSE guys, so I don't HAVE to do that anymore...". And, then we end up here, with a group of people that, at best, don't give a fuck about the questionable business practices & anti-consumer choices & actions by these corporations, and, at worst, actually ENABLE these practices, choices, & actions - and monopolies - by taking payoffs to legislatively favor these organizations. So, now that those that we've empowered to police this have failed us, what does society do? Do we BLAME them, suggest that their needs to be reform within our governments to fix this? No, everyone just blames the market, says "...that's just how it works...", and suggests that this is not only inevitable, but is the way things are "suppose to be". Meanwhile, the ONLY ones truly to blame here, that are truly DIRECTLY responsible for allowing this to happen, is US, society, the consumers of the marketplace. The moment you ACT like a sheep is the moment that those around you become wolves and TREAT you like sheep. Instead of viewing yourself as a 'victim', realize that the power that these corporations have only exists & grows through MONEY. Take away a corporation's money, and, not only have you removed their power, but you've removed their existence from the market all together. The moment that consumers realize that THEY have the power - and accept the RESPONSIBILITY that comes with it, which is to say stop being lazy asses and actually RESEARCH the goods/services & companies that they do business with - and start ACTUALLY voting with their wallet instead of just saying it then rolling their eyes as they order a GTX1060 over an RX580(in general terms, obviously not specific to this literal moment in time in the state of GPU pricing, though RX cards are SIGNIFICANTLY more affordable now), we'll ACTUALLY be able to make a difference.

I can't bring myself to READ through YOUR ENTIRE incoherent response WHICH has RANDOMLY capitalized WORDS, but regardless, your second sentence is simply untrue. To say otherwise is to claim that all the reprehensible strategies practiced by Nvidia didn't help them financially which is a ridiculous notion. Not only is it ridiculous, I didn't see you address that at all. I do see you claim people just need to stop being sheep, but you might as well go tell a herd of actual sheep that. You'll get the same result. While you are at it, make sure to emphasize to the herd that they are to blame (for being sheep) and that anyone who would harm them is justified as a result.

ek ek "Idiot's Guide™ to Internet Trolling Ch. 4 - How to troll someone that's offering an even vaguely intellectual conversation that may lead to a questioning of one's own beliefs Introduction. Should someone invest a decent amount of time into a logical, reasonable retort in a conversation that you, for any reason, refuse to consider offering a legitimate counter reply to, this is an Idiots Guide™ to trolling said conversation while saving face. 1. For this technique, the first key is to disregard the majority of their original reply. So, what we're going to do here is simply claim that this response is 'incoherent', getting us out directly replying to the majority of it. 2. Next, don't be afraid to cherry pick a statement in attempt to save face and not appear to just be trolling, even if that's exactly what we're doing here. Don't worry about the fact that you claimed that their reply was 'incoherent', they'll be too upset at the claim in the first place to notice the hypocrisy. 3. ALWAYS follow up your point to the cherry picked statement with complete misrepresentations of your target's arguments, so as to distract them from offering a legitimate retort to your previous cherry picked rebuttal. This should also save face to your audience, leading them to believe that you're something other than a troll. Again, don't worry about referencing various parts of their reply as you misrepresent them in spite of claiming that it was 'incoherent', they're going to be so angry with your trolling that they'll NEVER notice this." Wow, trolling right by the book - impressive! As for ANYONE ELSE that may be interested in an honest to goodness conversation, I'm here & waiting. Maybe I'm expecting too much from YT comments though...

Yes, but I think it's because often times you're willing to talk about issues that others would prefer to outright ignore for the sake of maintaining certain relationships. Keep up the good work.

I have been a tech head throughout nVidia's entire existence and have known about most of this. There is a reason I have only ever owned 1 of their cards, I regret it to this day. It was all just a coincidence that they created Gameworks shortly after the suits fled AMD with the stolen tech. I am going to try to translate this into nvidiashill speak for everyone to blame it on AMD for Gameworks existing. "AMD should never have created the tech if they didn't expect it to be stolen from them, knowing nvidia's history."

The OpenGPU initiative/tools is a step in the right direction, but not many (if any) game developers are helping develop the tools... AMD and Intel has been more open than Nvidia in many parts. Take their GPS for example, AMD provided information on how to get an image on a screen to the Linux developers, and some minor GL stuff. (Something that Nvidia never will do, and causes all those problems we have with Nvidia an Linux). Intels GPU drivers are totally Open, IIRC. But AMD has always been more open generally: TressFX works on CPU, GPU, and even Nvidia cards (and is MIT licenced), Mantel that became Vulkan, FreeSync that was adopted as a standard in VESA... Basically, the Red Team is the Good Guys.

Great video Jim, that's a lot of research and shows you've got a long history on tech forums. I just wanted to add that the reason NVIDIA is such a success is because Jensen is ruthless and in the corporate world, it's a war and CEOs absolutely need to cater to their company and share holders. Not to consumers. Record profits? Bad for consumers because they essentially get ripped off, but great for the company. AMD always lacked that same killer instinct, always reacting and not being the aggressive trend setter, they have the mentality of the underdog so they will remain as such. As for GameWorks, it is truly a powerful weapon that NVIDIA wields. I've been wanting to cover this topic more in-depth for a long time but never have the free time to put together a well presented video on it. But you and others should view GameWorks as a Trojan horse that NV inserts into game engines and major titles, forcing the competition to run code that NV designed and optimized, and it's purpose is not to enhance the game, it's sole purpose is to hurt the competition and force premature obsoletion of their own products, ie. encourage gamers to upgrade GPUs more often. Again, as consumers, this is bad, it's anti-competitive, but for NV the corporation, it's just them being ruthless in pursuit of victory & profits. If you're a NV share holder, you should be very happy.

Yeah When I bought it was after Vega's release. This was before prices went crazy. So Vega 64 was the same price as a high end AIB 1080 but barely, and in some games didn't, keep up with it while using way more power and being hotter. Vega 64 Liquid was more solidly equal to a 1080, but was priced at or near entry level 1080 Ti prices. The 1080 Ti was 15-20% faster. I simply couldn't justify buying the AMD cards even with a Freesync monitor.

I don't know about the rest of spanish speaking people in the world, but for me it has been _this_ way forever, evoking kind of a "prideful-much-mate?" reaction in a weird way; this is mainly caused by the almost nonexistent phonetic differences between the spanish word for 'envy' [envidia] and the brand/company name of the subject in question, that is, [nVidia]. So I always took it as a company that either: a) were so confident of their own products' capabilities to the extent of choosing to walk their very first steps into the market bearing a standard with such a display of pomposity as the word 'envy' does... *«ENVY. We're so bold in our stride meanwhile so far ahead of our competitors, they can only evince jealousy and resentfulness towards our proud advantage.»* Maybe a bit too exaggerated, maybe I've construed way too far/deep for how big a statement can be made by just a single word... note, though, that the word in question is solely, and right to the point, the brand name. b) _tryharded_ that much in their intent to be edgy and/or youth-appealing that it seemed appropiate to them choosing their brand name out of a wordplay of 'video' (not too foolish, tbh) plus anything conveying the "so-rad-d0000d!" spirit of those days (one of the seven capital sins? why not?)... being honest this was more or less the mainstream fad in the 90's corporate marketing, take as an example the gaming peripherals -and enthusiast products- manufacturers of the day. c) both a) and b) Hence, I didn't find myself ever wondering if THA COSNPIRÆCEE IZ REAL, but I thought it would be interesting to share what I've always took as inherent to the existence of -novideo- NVIDIA and other brilliant market-ballers HP... Envy? Like u fo real ma nigga? 🤦‍♂️ So that's your marketing ploy for selling overpriced gæming compiutahs to 12-yr-old-fortnite legends-to-be? 🤬 YOU PICKED THE WRONG WORD FOOL! PS. Please don't laugh at my English, I know it's sketchy AF... I can't help but to disclaim it appropiately in advance, so consider yourself/ves warned. Cheers.

MISSED INFO! The 1060 6GB is not 48 ROPs, because although it physically has 48 ROPs, the Chip only can render 32 per clock. Only Anandtech reported this though, as everyone else dishonestly reported the 1060 as a full 48 ROP card. Also, as a side mention, Gsync is a hack that runs completely on the monitor. Kepler never had adaptive sync capability, Nvidia stole the idea from VESA before it could be standardized, so they implemented it completely on the monitor with a RAM BUFFER / FPGA. This is why Gsync costs so much more, because the FPGA is solely responsible for handling adaptive. Quite honestly, if you hack the DRM, Gsync can technically work on any video card, because of how it's implemented. AMD INFO: OEMs are selling freesync capable laptops with freesync disabled. All modern EDP laptop monitors can do freesync. Dell is disabling freesync, limiting APU memory to 512, and have yet to patch Spectre/Meltdown in a bios update.

It took me years to finally get one, but by that time, there were more powerful cards available. A bit earlier I spend a terrible amount of money on my GF 4200Ti and I was very disappointed with the performance - GF4 was supposed to be a Doom 3 card - but Doom barely run on GF 4200Ti, and I was forced to play on very low details... the FX5900 was the last nVidia card I dropped my money on, from then I was an ATI and later AMD supporter - their cards were always very well performing and I like their drivers better.

Wow, I had no idea XFX used to make Nvidia cards. Nvidia got butthurt and salty over them making AMD cards, lol. All my AMD cards have been from XFX, I love their cards. Suck on that Nvidia!

Well, I never said AMD was perfect, did I? And let's be honest here, Nvidia has been far more anti-competitive than AMD ever has.

Markus Brorson And you people sound like you're in a cult. All I see is Nvidia fanboys getting heat from 10 AMD fanboys and Jim saying the exact same arguments and accusing people of being paid by Nvidia. This is not the AMD community I remember, this is pathetic.

Watching this after Nvidia announced a $1200 4080 16 GB and a $900 4080 12 GB (aka the 4070), which also just so happens to be have a cut down die compared to the 4080 16 GB 💀

Throwback to when 80 series was under 600 for the 100 die, not 102, or 104. These people don’t know what they’re missing and the shafting they’re enabling purchasing products at such outrageous prices. The 4090 should be a 700-800 dollar card (cause inflation since then has crazy amount of vram and pricy ass cooler) nothing else should be even close to its MSRP, also in Texas it’s gonna be too damn hot to use these in the summer.

No. It never does. Watch them rebrand AMD FSR as "DLSS Compatible" in the near future...
