I'll always support AMD For GPUs, I take into consideration that FreeSync can save me $200 on a monitor, or the idea that in Vulkan or DX12 the 480 beats the 1060. I wonder how many people who bought say the GTX 260 or 550Ti even knew AMD/ATi existed.

Back in the 550 days I forced all my friends to upgrade to AMD because I told them for their money it's way cheaper, none of them regret it today. Since most of their GPU still work. Unlike my 460 GTX that fucking needed to be replaced 2 times and then died 3 years later.

This annoys me so much... AMD was clearly better in both price and performance compared to Nvidia and still losing. A guy in my class recently told me AMD was gay and Nvidia was the way to go, without having any knowledge of pc's whatsoever. I don't think AMD is ever going to be able to compete with Nvidia just because of the mindshare

Lol the election was nothing like that. Basically the narrative the liberals pushed to make Trump look like the devil completely backfired. When under actual scrutiny Hillary was more of a manipulative lying crony than Trump who presented himself as the exact opposite. No matter how many pussies Trump grabbed, Hillary came across as a talking piece for the government and people wanted neither the leading democrats nor republicans. I voted for Hillary but even I agree that she lost for the right reasons, where Trump won because he was not Hillary. The Bernie voters deserved to be pissed after reading the emails and learning of just how badly he was robbed of candidacy from the very beginning.

i'm depressed as f now. i knew about the nvidia mindset but i didnt realize it was soooooo far back. i only ever got one friend to get a rx 480 card because for his money it was the best the rest refuse to buy anything from AMD and they can't even say why they just don't want to. and for random people that i helped build them a PC i generally give them an option if it's in their budget like between rx 480 8 gig and 1060 3 gig. 90% go for the 1060 3 gig so it's not even a matter of nvidia showing bigger numbers. and not one godam one of them can give a 2 sec argument as to why. brb need to go drown myself in wine.
@Superstark70LP

I feel your pain xd. I already convinced 2 of my 3 friends to go for the rx 480 8 gb and the third one is still thinking about even though i told him it´s way better value for money. (Mfcking mindshare). And so far both of them are happy about the rx 480 ^^
@Tudorgeable
@Tudorgeable 8 лет назад
Unfortunately the 1060 3g was slightly cheaper than 480 and even 470 while being slightly faster. My last card before this was a 770 bought over an r9 290 (which would've lasted me much longer) simply because of power draw, noise and heat. Same argument for the 1060 over 480, I would've loved to get it but it simply was way too overpriced (fake stock issues or maybe stupid miners hogging them all). The 200$ mark card the RX 480 promisted to be around was way surpassed at 350$ in Romania.
@Ashaira
@Ashaira 8 лет назад
well i am from romania and while the rx 480 was a bit overpriced in the beginning it settled quite fast. and there was no way it would have been 200$ here. at best we get stuff at the same amount but in euros or the same amount + 24-20% tax +1-2% store increase. this has nothing to do with amd or nvidia. it's how we get things. the same happened to 1070 and 1080. the closest msrp cards we got for quite a while were the ones from china from Palit and gainward (which ironically are also among the best designed looks excluded)
@HardStyler3
@HardStyler3 8 лет назад
alone 3gb vram are a reason not to buy it and also where was it faster it was faster in 1-2 titles in the rest it was slower then the rx 480 also the rx 480 launch got fucked because everyone tested with reference rx 480 against custom gtx 1060 which made the 1060 look way better then it actually is against custom rx 480s
@cataria3903
@cataria3903 8 лет назад
and the fact, that nvidia is getting away with calling the 1060 3GB a 1060 and not a 1055 what it should be called is just another fuck u as there is no way the average consumer checks shader numbers. disabled shaders with the same name and without any change or sign to recognize for the consumer. that's just horrible.
@Pushing_Pixels

People who don't bother to research their purchases will instinctively buy Nvidia because they "heard it was better". Unfortunately, those people then tell their friends, and the cycle continues.My cousin recently posted on facebook asking for advice on a build and several of his friends just said "buy Nvidia", without giving any reason. No-one said, "do some research and consider each card on its merits". It's pretty much impossible to break that kind of hold on the market. It would take several generations of better cards AND much better marketing than AMD has had in the past. It doesn't help that so much of the tech media is in the pocket of Nvidia

MrFoxyCracker I don’t mind nvidia being in a better position compared to and on the graphics side when you compare what Intel did to amd on the cpu side of things
@flixelgato1288
@flixelgato1288 6 лет назад
That’s very true. Nvidia does bad stuff like closed platforms, whilst AMD at least play the nice guys with open technologies, but an idea is still nothing compared to Intel. A reason why I absolutely don’t want to buy Intel it it can be avoided (which thank god it can now that Ryzen’s here). The whole Nvidia thing doesn’t so much make me angry as sad. In my opinion the things they do are only natural strategies for a company that wants to make money, AMD/ATi have simply always played the nice guys. In this case it is really the consumer that is to blame, for even putting Nvidia into a position where it has the ability to screw us over. Unfortunately I worry about how long AMD will be able to hold out in the GPU market. I feel like they will either be thrown out by Nvidia’s lead, or Nvidia will be thrown out of graphics like AdoredTV describes in his AMD inside video. Either way, I have a terrible feeling about the GPU market. Even Radeon technologies group would get lazy if they had a legit monopoly. Also whilst I will prefer to buy AMD, if over the coming years they start losing in performance too heavily I’m not sure I could be the kind of person who will still throw their money at them in the hopes that it will make a decisive difference and save competition.

how can Nvidia sell more than AMD if AMDs cards were not only cheaper but performed better? Did Nvidia just have much more marketing and shills?
@likeclockwork6473
@likeclockwork6473 8 лет назад
Partially. Nvidia have always made it more difficult than it should be for AMD to get games working properly. For example Batman Arkham Asylum (first one) was working perfectly on AMD hardware months before release. Right before release Nvidia worked on the game and anti aliasing then refused to work on AMD hardware. Is that because of physx or gameworks? No Nvidia modified the game's code at the source and broke it for AMD. This has been happening since the two companies began competing and has gone a very long way in ruining ATI/AMD's reputation. Its still happening today and Gameworks/Physx has nothing to do with it. Nvidia know that people only read initial reviews. If the game is broken for AMD on launch, thats what the majority of people see. Even if they fix it, the damage has already been done Developers can't complain because they will do everything they can to avoid conflict with Nvidia
@Folopolis
@Folopolis 8 лет назад
Marketing is a way to put it, but like he says in the video, it's mind share. Apple rarely does much marketing - at least compared to Samsung and LG - yet they make by far the most money in the phone market. Same for NVidia. It's to the point where if you live in Southern California, people will ask if you've gotten the iPhone 7 yet because it is assumed that you will at some point. Likewise, people think that just because their machine has an NVidia sticker on it it's a gaming computer, even if it has a GT 710. Prebuilt manufacturers like Alienware just have to put an NVidia and Intel sticker on the box and people will pay more for it - they don't know that the GTX 750 in that machine is half the performance as the Rx 480 in the one next to it on the shelf at Best Buy for the same price.l

Rena Ryugu Easy, Lets say you are are an average joe looking to buy a car and there are two brands, One is obviously faster, more efficent, and costs the same or very slightly more then the other, In this case you would buy the better car. Now lets take these same two cars, One is still better but the company that sells the worse car pays companys to plaster their name all over their gas stations all over the road, Up on billboards, Radio ads, T.V ads, celebs saying how much they love it, Gives tons and tons and tons of free cars to test out to reviewers along with "gifts", They even pay and bribe several reviewers to give bad reviews about the other brand that are as full of shit as your typical politician, They even gussy up the car to look nicer and charge a bit more claiming its classy. Now the company owning the better car doesn't pertake in this as they are more focused on other things or less concerned or any number of other factors, Suddenly your average joe hears little to nothing good about the better car and goes and pays for the crappy car even when its obvious to anyone who spends 30 seconds actully compareing the two that the one in the ads is garbage because he dosent want to learn enough or is to lazy to learn enough about how the car works to make an educated opinion. Meanwhile all the people who know cars are buying the good one but they are only a tiny fraction of the actual market and even when they tell their friends how much better the car is their moron friends are like "but this one looks cooler and obama put his assprint of approval all over it, and tom cruze was spotted having sex in the back so its OBVIOUSLY the better car" thats how nvidia won even though their cards are garbage when amd puts its braincells to work and actully makes good cards that arent another bulldozer

@AvroBellow
@AvroBellow 7 лет назад
No he's not. ATi RULED high-end graphics in the 90s and they still acted like good guys by doing things like opening their interface architecture for players like Orchid, 3Dfx, Matrox and Diamond. What they did to help Diamond (buying their FireGL division) made Diamond so grateful that they became ATi's FIRST Add-In-Board Partner because even though ATi bought FireGL from them, they still allowed Diamond to sell FireGL cards on the market which competed with ATi. Ask XFX if they ever regret having jumped ship? I guarantee you that they don't because ATi/AMD treat their board partners fairly. On the other side, nVidia only really treats you fairly if your name is EVGA.

Amd dropped the ball and didnt provide consumers with their card alternative in high end and top end market, so nvidia milks us with founders edition bullshit on all gtx 1070/80 and pascal titan x. If rx 470/480 wasnt avaiable or was at 300$+ nvidia would price their gtx 1060 accordingly too. Amd had few weeks of no competition with their rx 460 and did the same, now once nvidia launched gtx 1050 amd dropped price of rx 460 by 10% to stay competetive.
@geigster
@geigster 8 лет назад
AMD has dropped the ball in the high end market too many times. I don't know why I believed that the R9 Fury would be anything special at launch, and blindly bought that piece of shit. Vega has to absolutely smash the fuck out of Nvidia under $700 or they will never live to tell the tale. Nobody is being ripped off. Nvidia had a 70%+ increase in performance from the 980 to the 1080. More then commendable, and utterly impressive beyond belief in today's market. AMD's ball is much lower and they will have to pull off some amazing shit. If flagship Vega is MUCH more powerful then the 1080ti, that is the only way I buy AMD again.

@iqtuz

Yes, but the problem is that AMD is so late. Vega will be released somewhere in H1 of 2017. That means anywhere between January to June. That's a full 6 -12 months after Nvidia for the same generation. This means that when Vega arrives, Nvidia can afford to cut the prices of their cards(great for us consumers) because they will have had 6++ months to optimize the manufacturing process, which makes it easier to produce, hence they can afford to drop their prices a lot. Since Vega is so late(heck, even Volta from Nvidia will be ready in H2 2017, just a few monthsafter Vega release) I don't have any hopes of them competing. This is what's going to happen: Their Fury 2 will cost like 1070 and perform close to the 1080. The fury X 2 will be slightly faster than a 1080 while probably costing slightly less. Now what will happen is that Nvidia will drop their prices on their lineup a lot to stay competitive, and release the 1080ti to beat the fury x 2. I hope ZEN will be a success for AMD, so that they can give some money to their GPU department as well, meaning the generation after Vega will be great.
@rtzrtz2574
@rtzrtz2574 8 лет назад
+ iqtuz I had this exact problem. I had games that my old GPU did not run well enough anymore (R9 270) and I set my goal for the new GPU offering 3 times the performance and costing less than 500€. I waited for the new generation of AMD GPUs with high hopes for the 480, but it did deliver enough performance in 1440p. Since the GTX 1070 was there offering a better price performance ratio than the Fury X (Germany), there was no real choice. And I won`t wait half a year for an AMD GPU that might be better than a card I can get now. Especially when the Polaris card does not offer that much better performance/watt than the GTX 970 with an older architecture and bigger nodes.

Andrei Despinoiu yea not to do with power draw at all.. in fact a lot of power and heat issues seem to be in my experience made up stories. And have also something to do with not understanding custom tuning. My reference XFX RX480 8GB (recent not launch) averages 120watts and 65C (according to GPU-Z) while being maxed out in various games, yes I did manually undervolt it but kept stock clocks. My RX470(1 week from launch date) reference design from Sapphire pulls on average 83 Watts under same test conditions as my 480. I also purchased for testing only an RX460.. again staggering results... 45Watts!!!!!!! Only caveat is you must undervolt them manually at stock clocks.. my RX480 for example: on core is under volted to 1050mv @ 1266Mhz. And the memory is at 980mv @2000Mhz. Stock voltages at 1190mv @ 1266Mhz on core. and 1000mv @ 2000Mhz on memory. ---thus I'm averaging 120watts according to GPU-Z. This is down from my 175watt average at stock voltages. My average temps are down as well, 65C (with a 75C target and 90C max). And stock setup I was getting average of 80C!!! Once undervolted everything runs so much better, cooler, and a lot less power draw. You may think it because I won the silicon lottery. But I asked the handful of friends I know that have RX480 reference to do same exact thing, they been pleasantly surprised... huge reduction in temps, lot better frame rate stability and a lot less fan noise... I hope AMD implements this in a driver update! Some kind of automatic voltage tuning that actually works. I don't understand AMDs reference tuning. They should be targeting better fan profile, better voltages, and better clock speeds.. even if it is a silicon lottery thing, they still could reduce voltages and change fan and thermal targets but a lot. My RX470 is a launch model and stock settings it sounds like a leaf blower or it thermal throttles to hell. Not sure what dictates it turning to leaf blower at normal core speed vs throttling quietly.. but once I undervolted it to 950mv from stock 1050mv and put thermal and fan targets in a quiet but reasonable sone (2000-4000rpm) it never throttled and runs cool as ever... Used same logic on my recent RX460 test bench purchase and wowzers.... AMD overvolts them to hell and they wanna throttle badly...

I got the sapphire RX460 nitro+ 4gb card, the thing ran at about 42c under full load, and it really wasn't loud at all. Now I could very well be wrong (and probably am) but I wonder that if they are over-volting on purpose, that it's to make overclocking easier so people need not mess with the voltage at all, wishful thinking I know, and it's still silly to do if that's the case, but it's a viable reason.
@dirtydoge756
@dirtydoge756 8 лет назад
I'm one of the few that bought a Fury (sapphire Nitro)....for the exact reasons you mentioned in the video. I paid more than I'd have liked for it, but I knew I'd be directly supporting AMD's Radeon division. In my experience this card is HIGHLY under-rated. People are extremely quick to just sweep anything by AMD under the rug, especially the Fury cards. I game at 4k, where this card excels and in a lot of titles I can even crank everything up to ultra and maintain playable framerates. The other day while poking around newegg I decided to look up my card once again and my mind was blown. I paid $499 for my Fury and here it was for $259 with a $20 MIR effectively bringing it down to $240. Less than half of what I originally paid for it last march. At $240 that card is a steal. If it had more than 4GB of vram I'd buy another but I am unfortunately starting to really find that that's just not enough VRAM anymore for 4k gaming. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Vega is actually worth a damn because I would love to pick one up when it launches. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one trying to help keep AMD alive, but just like you, I understand the importance of competition. Before my Fury I owned 4 R9 290's and before that, two 7950's. Before those I had 6950's and a 5830. We all need AMD to stay alive otherwise we can expect Nvidia to go in to us dry.
@chromecobalt

I keep AMD alive. While my friends are still saving up (gave in and got a cheap laptop eventually), I put together a full rig of fx8350 and rx460 that runs things really good. The funny thing is they refuse to touch AMD, heat issues efficiency etc which is absolutely bullshit because I run the cpu overclocked and gpu overclocked and it comfortably runs with 400w power

I see a lot of idiots buying the GTX 1050 Ti, which is fucking shit compared to the RX 470. For $10 to $30 more (depending on where you live), the RX 470 is at least 60% faster, usually almost twice as fast even. Even if you spend some money on a cheap but decent PSU like the $35 Corsair VS450 (it has a 36A single 12V rail), the RX 470 + PSU still offers better performance for the price.

Excellent video, really interesting. The HD 5870 and HD 5850 were probably the best GPUs released under AMD's leadership after they bought ATI, they decimated the competition. It's quite amazing to me that the brand name is so important to less informed consumers. A similar thing happened when AMD released the original Athlon, the Athlon XP and the Athlon 64 CPUs which were all far superior to Intel equivalents, yet people still just bought Intel. In the Athlon XP's case it had much lower clock speeds than the Pentium 4 yet outperformed it massively (at least until the "North wood" variant came out a lot later and competed reasonably well. Later, it was destroyed by the Athlon 64). People still bought the Pentium 4 in massive numbers because of the brand and the fact that the clock speed was so much higher which led people to assume it was much better. AMD adopted the Athlon XP XXXX+ branding in desperation to show it was faster than an XXXX MHz Pentium 4 but consumers who weren't enthusiasts just found it confusing and it didn't work. If AMD pull a rabbit out of a hat with Zen and it is a superior CPU let's hope history does not repeat and they manage to convince the general public that it's worth buying.
@playcloudpluspc

Also, Intel "convinced" companies like Dell to only sell Intel which certainly didn't help. They were fined a fairly paltry sum given what transpired and they've managed to find a way to avoid paying it to this day www.pcper.com/news/General-Tech/Intel-still-hasnt-paid-AMD-12-billion-USD-anti-trust-fine.

facelessninetytwo Adored did a video a while back talking about how nVidia's marketing has always been better than AMD\ATI's. So the was no sense of excitement. :)

It's not all red roses for AMD and their athlon series. Remember when AMD charged fucking 1000$ for their athlon, then Intel came a month later with a 500$ alternative that smashed it? AMD is no better than Intel/Nvidia. It's just that Nvidia/Intel can charge premium prices because they are ahead atm, and AMD is playing catch up. This can easily be seen in the CPU market, where Intel is charging a lot for their newest CPU with barely any improvements. The same can be seen at the high end GPU market today as well. Nvidia will have free reign in the high-end(1070/1080) segment for GPUs for a full 6 months until AMD releases Vega. Nvidia knows that, and therefore the 1070/1080 are much more expensive than what the 970/980 were. It sucks for us, but Nvidia will get away with it because they have no competition there, so if people want top performance, they have no choice but to get Nvidia. I really hope Zen will be competitive with Intel, and that Vega will be a success as well. Better competition from AMD will mean that Intel and Nvidia has to lower their prices and step up their game, which is good for us consumers.

About a year ago, I bought myself a GTX 970. Last week I built my 9 year old brother his first PC with an RX 460. Both mine and my brothers PC's run Overwatch (which is the main game we're currently both playing) at 1080p 60fps. I honestly wasn't expecting a 'low end' AMD card to be able to handle the game so well, mainly because of everything I had heard about Nvidia vs. AMD in the past. I'm kinda glad I bought an AMD card for my brother as it'll most likely cause me to rethink before I purchase another Nvidia card that 1# runs slower, and 2# costs more.

How have I've been so blind. I guess I was one of the guys that never appreciated AMD. I bought the GTX 550 ti because a friend had the same one and I was impressed by the games he could run with it. But you should keep in mind that we were just kids at that time and didn't understand anything about GPU's at all. (We were 12-14 years old. I cannot remember when I got my 550 ti). From now on I am going to do my research always and will probably buy AMD if they continue with making better cards with much more advanced technology for lower prices. I will also consider investing some money in them. I am thinking around 1300$. Can anyone give me a link from where I can buy AMD shares? How do AMD bounce back with no money and a bruised brand? When people will flat-out refuse to consider your product despite having clear advantages, how do you change their mind? I saw someone on twitter today who was seeking advice on components for an LGA-2011 build. They'd decided on the 6C/12T 6850K. I mentioned that the Ryzen 7 series performs better, is more efficient and far cheaper overall before reading a few tweets back where they'd stated "I will not buy AMD". So, Ryzen offers more performance, lower platform cost, is more efficient, has an upgrade path (AM4 support for future Zen updates) but.... they flat-out refuse. They're paying MORE for an older chip that's significantly worse in every metric, but they're not going to shift. How do AMD reverse that? CAN they reverse that? Honestly, at this point, I just think the PC market is a lost cause. Enthusiasts expect AMD to challenge two titans with a comparatively insignificant budget. Even when they perform miracles (Ryzen) it's still not enough. Even when they're leading on technology it's just not enough.

I think the big thing is AMD closing the gap first. Intel has such a huge lead it would be hard from them to completely demolish it. After watching this, I'm much less inclined to buy a Nvidia GPU for the same reason I don't buy Apple products: insane margins. They make 678 mil from 1.3 bil in revenue? So basically they could slice their prices in HALF and break even. Gives me the same feeling I got from when I was ripped off at the flee market by the guy who swore on his mother's grave that he couldn't drop the price another peso. back in 2010-2011 (?) one of my friends came to me for an advice. he was building a budget gaming PC and someone in computer store told him to buy GTX 560. he asked me if it would be a good choice. I just told him to buy HD 5850 instead. it was a much better price/performance choice at that time. he's got that PC even today and is quite happy with it. only thing he's done with it since then, he replaced CPU with i3 and increased ram to 6 gigs. I agree, AMD/ATI had some problems before HD 4000 series (for example crappy AA performance), but since that generation, their cards were/are a better choice imo. you're just getting more for your money. round where I live, on a second hand market, R9 380X 4 gig costs less than GTX 960 2 gig (not saying anything about a 4 gig model). why would anybody buy GTX 960, unless one is a blind fandoy? ^_-

This is why I'm hoping someone like Samsung will buy out AMD, to pump some money into the company and create a competitive market again. Also, it's not all doom and gloom just yet, as even with this large lead Nvidia hasn't really inflated prices by much. This is probably because Nvidia knows that there is a limit on what enthusiasts are willing to pay, especially since top-end GPUs have been less than $700 for quite a few generations now. Sure, the 1080 launched at $650, but compared to the 280, which launched at the same price, it is a far more competitive card and better value for the money, especially when you consider that $650 in 2009 is around $730 today. AMD has nothing that comes close and it blows every modern title out of the water, even in 4K with high settings. We still don't have a single GPU card that can max out games at 4K, but I'm sure that 1080ti or Vega will accomplish that goal. We should pretty much give up on hopes of AMD ever regaining majority market share like they did pre-2007. Nvidia simply has better marketing, and that has lead to them having a better reputation and relationship with their customers. Honestly, I think the best thing that could happen to AMD would be a complete rebrand, by being bought out they could completely change the name and look of their product lines, and reinvent themselves. This might be the thing that could compete with Nvidia.

The high end CPU market is already monopolized by Intel for now. Their i7 6900K costs $1000 Meanwhile, AMD's equally performing Zen CPU which also has 8 cores and 16 threads, has an MSRP of $300. This just shows that Intel marked up their i7's by 300% and their customers don't even know that they are already being ripped off.

I used to be one of those guys who only bought Nvidia because "It's Nvidia!" Been mindlessly buying Nvidia cards since 2008 and never really cared to look at what ATi/AMD brought to the table. It wasn't until last year when I thought of getting a new card (my GTX 650Ti kernel crashes on Witcher 3) and took my time to do some research on what AMD was offering. My friend even told me to get the GTX 960. So I looked at its AMD counterpart, the R9 380. Saw a lot of head-to-head benchmarks where most of the games, the 380 was winning. Now, the 380 is in my PC. Wow, that was more depressing than I realised. I knew that Nvidia had/has a ridiculous amount of mindshare, of which they do not deserve. Also a disturbingly large number of people will look at the best performing card on the market and expect it to scale down in price for both parties (of course that is not the case). I have choosen to completely boycot Nvidia cards for years now, simply in terms of business practices and ethics; thankfully I have managed to convice most of my mates to do the same. Nvidia gameworks is purely toxic for everybody, they constantly black box code to put into games that AMD can't increase their efficiency for. The most obvious example of the pure douche baggery of AMD vs Nvidia in this case are their solutions for realistic looking hair. AMD's TressFX, first shown in a big way in the original Tomb Raider reboot was beautiful, and yes, Nvidia had performance problems with it for a little while, but it didn't take them long to get performance cost not unreasonably far from AMD's cards because they were able to look at the code and make it efficient. Now look at Nvidia's Hairworks, objectively looks worse in every comparative example I've seen, performance cost is worse then AMD's TressFX, even on Nvidia cards. Not only that but AMD can't look at the code to get the performance cost down to a reasonable level. There as also the fact that a huge library of AMD's code is now public and freely available for anyone to tinker with. There is no way that I am going to support a company that forces developers to use their worse code for everything, just because they want to use a little bit for something. Their business practices are disguisting and disgraceful, and as far as I'm concerned, they don't deserve a cent until they fix them. But thank you for this video, and appreciate the amount of time and energy it would have taken you to create this.

You are missing one thing - PC builders. They are the ones that put a 550 Ti in a custom build for client. They read a review 5 years ago and NVIDA won, then for 5 years they put nvidias in client machines. And BTW they will tell you, "AMD has bad drivers". I heard this as recent as one month ago, from a pc builder!

*AdoredTV:* I agree with you about Nvidia having way more *mindshare* than AMD, but in the end, it won't matter because AMD pretty much controls the gaming market. Let's be real here, most people are still using Windows 7 and 8.1 news.slashdot.org/story/16/11/04/021207/windows-7-and-81-are-gaining-more-new-users-than-windows-10 so DX12 isn't a huge factor to them but *Vulkan* will kill off Nvidia and Microsoft, to a certain degree; because Vulkan will be able to hit all platforms includiing *Apple* and the *consoles* thus Nvidia's performance will go DOWN while AMD's performance will go UP. Regardless of whatever mindshare, via *shills*, Nvidia has, people are starting to wonder why Nvidia is having problem with DX12/Vulkan. When Doom came out with their Vulkan patch the game was already dying out so alot of people didn't even care to download it. If that game was initially-released on Vulkan instead of OpenGL, I guarantee you alot of people would have not bought those *PASCAL* cards. When Vulkan gets fully-established there will be no way for Nvidia to run. Look at Nvidia now, they just paid off *Ubisoft* not to release *Watch Dogs 2* as DX12 because of their weak performance on in DX12. That game was heavily-touted by Ubisoft to be DX12 but as soon as Nvidia started sponsoring it, it's only DX11 with no word from Ubisoft on when it may receive the DX12 patch. Nvidia knows the truth and they know the end is near. In addition, AMD's ALUs(cores) take up less *die space* than Nvidia's so it will be more easy for AMD to shrink die sizes than Nvidia. At a certain point, Nvidia won't be physically able to shrink their dies any further. You are look at this from a *demand* perspective with consumers but I'm looking at it from a *supply* perspective with producers; hence, AMD now controls the Gaming Market and there is nothing Nvidia can do about it.
@Moshe_Dayan44
@Moshe_Dayan44 8 лет назад
Agreed. The ultimate irony here is that nVidia will pull in more money than ever before one of these quarters, and then their gaming graphics revenues will begin to unexpectedly plummet once the combination of Radeon-optimized console games and mid-range GPU equipped APUs start pushing them out of the add-in board market in fairly short order. nVidia's current gaming market share should be looked upon as a last hurrah rather than as a sign of continuing success. There's no way around the inevitable that they WILL be crushed in gaming.
@moorishbrutha4363
@moorishbrutha4363 8 лет назад
Exactly, that's what I see it as: *A Last Hurrah* because Vulkan/DX12 is here to stay and won't be going anyway in the distant future. For Nvidia to paid off *Ubisoft* like that for *Watch Dogs 2*, I know they know they can't handle well-optimized games in lest of too many *draw calls*. AMD has made developers job well much easier so they will naturally comply to AMD's methodology whether Nvida like it or not; so Nvidia can spend beaucoup money on bribing developers not to use DX12 but once Vulkan takes over from DX12, which is inevitable, there will be nothing Nvidia can do to stop it.
@josh885

The point is though none of that will matter much because the majority buying Nivdia cards don't even look at benchmarks. The just buy "The new Nvidia" as if AMD cards don't even exist and they have done so for almost a decade now. It's not that Nvidia has way more mindshare it's that with the majority of GPU buyers AMD either has no mindshare at all or is considered to be shit and a non option unless you're poor and is therefore seen as embarrassing to own. Even when AMD's cards are benching better or offer better performance for the money.
@moorishbrutha4363
@moorishbrutha4363 8 лет назад
Isn't what you said is describing *mindshare*? And let's be real for a moment, it has been awhile since AMD had a high-end card that was faster than Nvidia's in real performance but now changing with DX12/Vulkan.
@josh885
@josh885 8 лет назад
like I said for the majority of gamer AMD has no mindshare at all OR see AMD as a non option that is always worse than Nvidia and basically not even worth considering or checking the benchmarks for. So yes that is mindshare but not the kind you want to have. The point is for most gamers the choice at upgrade time is between Nividia cards and AMD is not even a consideration. As shown in the vid, THIS WAS TRUE EVEN WHEN AMD CARDS HAD BETTER PERFORMANCE AND WERE LESS MONEY. This fact is staggering and cannot be overlooked. It means Nvidia was/is a foregone conclusion not even a conscious choice over AMD for most buyers. This is why people with 980s and 980tis rushed out to buy the 1080 instead of waiting to see what AMD was going to offer. AMD simply wasn't even an option to them. Even if with DX12 AMD manages to overtake Nvidia slightly or get parity it wont matter because people who buy Nvida cards in droves won't even notice. They already know Nivdia is the best and just want to get their card now and wont do research so they'll just buy the Nvida card that's in their price range secure in the knowledge it will be the best. After all Nividia is what all their friends use, all their favorite streamers use, and is what all the big RU-vid tech channels are always talking about. If AMD is mentioned it is usually only to bash them or say they are good for the money. Which really means "complete shit only buy if poor" the most people watching.

Sadly people just default to buying nvidia without even considering any AMD card. Even though AMD was the better value people still bought nvidia en masse. I'm still using an old 7890 on my ancient desktop and it worked great when I used it for gaming. We need competition or else nvidia will keep on hurting consumers with stuff like G-Sync and gameworks and then we will be forced to use this stuff and pay even more.

I feel so bad for AMD now:( I consider my self an enthusiast that will buy the cheapest/best option as long as it matches my performance requirement/tier(high end). In 2006 I got the 8800GTX, because that was the best card. In 2009 I got the HD 5870, as that was the best card. In 2012 I got the GTX 680, because at the time of launch, it performed better than the 7970. Now, the 7970 has shown to be the better buy due to performance in newer games, but that was something I couldn't foresee back then. Back In October this year I really needed a new GPU. Battlefield 1 and the witcher 3 was/is on the agenda, and I wanted ultra settings 60fps+. The RX 480 just wasn't powerful enough, as it wasn't aimed at the high-end market, which is the market I deal with. So the choice was basically between the 1070(1080 was too expensive) and the R9 fury X. At the time of purchase, the 1070 was slightly cheaper than the fury X in Norway. They performed about the same, but slightly lower price + a generation newer made me go with the 1070 instead.. I kinda regret that now despite the fact that the 1070 is an awesome card. I hope Zen will give Intel a run for their money, and I hope Vega turns out great for AMD. Competition is always great for the consumer. Monopoly will just drive the prices up and the technological advancement down..

Very interesting that you zeroed in on the GTX 260 as it was my GPU around that time. I got my prebuilt 'gaming PC' at the time which came with a GTX 260 core 216 at the time when I changed from my Pentium 4 to an i7920. My P4 was running a Radeon so it was when I switched to nVidia without really planning on it as I wasn't an enthusiast at the time. I just needed a new computer that was 'for gaming' And as you guessed, I was heavily into MMOs at the time and did not join steam until around late 2009 when Civilization V launched. Basically confirming your theory here, I was one of those data points.

Never thought I'll see what has happened to every other market happen to PC gaming. Nvidia has become the Apple of graphics cards. Pure corporate evil. The so-called console peasants are doing better. Sony and MS are both trying to be the best, sometimes one is ahead in features, other times the next and the sales do reflect that. The GPU war is over? Ok then, once my 970 gets too old to handle games, I'm gonna dump my PC and buy a console. The PC master race never existed. It was all lies. Just like Half-Life 3.
@6utS
@6utS 8 лет назад
U realise consoles have really shitty cpu which is even worse from i3? It literally means long years of 30fps games that dip under, and only ones that keep 60 are those that arent cpu intensive. Recent example- ps4pro dips in bf1 to 40fps in 64player conquest mode every time game puts a strain on the cpu. Sure next gen of consoles will have better cpu, but how much better, and do u have any warranty devs will chose smooths 60fps over increased res/visuals again which will led to something like 4k30fps with dips on ps5? Spoilers, i got og ps4 myself, i know what i am talking about, i got it for exclusives but if i got a choice i will almost always go with multiplatform games on the pc. There u can chose how game looks and performs and u arent on the mercy of devs and weak hardware.

Eneko Prins The better product wasn't enough because the video isn't actually showing the real prices. It's giving the US prices. In many other places the Raedon cards were just as expensive or even more expensive than the nVidia counterpart for those generations. AMD for example heavily inflates prices in the Oceanic region. The 1060 is actually cheaper than the RX480 in Australia and New Zealand. His statistics are misleading and don't tell the whole story.

Adored, I think you should look into "Nvidia's" latest titles... Tomb Raider, Mirror's Edge, Deus Ex, Watch_Dogs, and some more were all supposed to be optimized from ground up for AMD with AMD tech. Watch_Dogs was even supposed to have GPUOpen. All of those games came under Nvidia's full control either a week or month before launch. Tomb Raider was hyped up since early last year by AMD as "the gaming evolved title", well, it was announced as GameWorks title with one AMD tech included right before launch. Deus Ex had the same story, except it did admit almost half a year earlier that it would feature Nvidia tech, and as it turns out the only AMD tech in the game (PureHair, aka TressFX 3.0) could only be enabled if Cloth Physics (ApeX, PhysX) was turned on. ME:C was supposed to feature some features from GPUOpen, but all AMD really has in that game is it's logo, Nvidia stuffed some tech in there. I mean, this is straight up hijacking... I remember seeing the confirmation for GPUOpen in Watch_Dogs 2 in an interview with Ubisoft, but of course it's pretty much impossible to find now when it matters. Point is, it's there, somewhere.

i'd put those low end NVidia cards "selling" well, due to pre-built systems. Many so called gaming PC's in the likes of PC world or ebay, sell many of their gaming PC's with low end gaming GPU's, and to be honest, most people would rather build a pre-built system, and all they know is that these PC's are sold as gaming PC's. Most of the people I know who would build their own, usually go for better GPU's, most of those who I know who bought pre-built systems, are running 550-750ti. On top of that, most places like PC world I have been to with friends looking to upgrade the GFX card on their pre-built systems, tend to recommend NVidia cards, which is a big influence with the clueless masses (the same people who still call the actual PC "The Hard Drive" :P). I admit I have Nvidia cards in all my PC's now, but only because AMD have not really competed, my last AMD card being my 290X which I only got rid of a couple of weeks ago. I got the 980ti because the Fury X was out of stock wherever I tried to buy it, and the 1080 because there was no AMD equivalent, also the 8800GTS simply because I had one spare, and using a HD7970 GHZ edition in what I now use as a file server, was overkill and my mate sorely needed that old 285 of his replacing. Spot on about being put over a barrel with no competition to drive things down, the pricing just shows that, no way the 1080 would have been the price it has been had AMD really had something to compete with.

Both are going to happen... Idiots will buy a new one even if it is less than 10% increase in raw performance like with intel chips. And NVIDIA can force the matter as well by adding gameworks 2.0 to gimp their old GPU's artificially.

The Nvidia buyer is like the Apple buyer. Some people buy it because they genuinely prefer it, or because of a combination of specific features or capabilities they see it as worth the cost. However, most people buy it because of the logo. The average AMD buyer is like the average Windows phone buyer, you either have to know something to want it and are willing to deal with occasional brokenness, or it's the cheapest.

I have a Lumia 950XL, sometime next year my phone will have access to the greatest amount of programs on any mobile platform thanks to x86 emulation and continuum. As long as its an old enough game, or most 32-bit programs my phone can run it.
@Folopolis
@Folopolis 8 лет назад
Kevin Smith I have the same phone. You have to look deeper into that emulation announcement. The demo they showed was on an HP Elite X3, but they also said the Snapdragon 835 will be emulating in hardware. The fact that the demo was on the HP suggests that we will be able to so similar tasks just with worse performance, but the hardware emulation suggests that there will be features that don't work or work horribly.
@KevinSmith-qi5yn
@KevinSmith-qi5yn 8 лет назад
Yea, I factored in about a 40% performance drop due to emulation. So for most 32-bit applications it should be do-able considering they don't require much in the first place. It's also why I placed emphasis on pre-2000 games.

What a super in depth and educating video, really interesting. I find even now that they trade blows depending on the tier, AMD still arguably offers better value if you factor in freesync. And thankfully it seems like freesync is winning over gsync despite nvidias massive market advantage. Now I'm sure at some point nvidia will give up on gsync as it is and support the open standard with their own twist, but something to keep in mind while it is the case
@adoredtv

There definitely is a bigotry from a lot of nVidia users. It pains me to say that more then half of the friends that I have in PC Gaming will always say to go nVidia and to avoid "AMD trash" because "bad drivers" and "bad performance". The truth of the matter is that those are myths and they are unwilling to be enlightened. Ask them what AMD card they have used and they'll either have never used one or had an old pre-2007 ATi GPU. But you won't hear anyone talk about how nVidia drivers had massive problems in 2010 and some more beyond that may have contributed to killed GPUs. A lot of people joked about AMD pulling an nVidia when they launched Crimson and it locked GPU Fans at 20% for many people. Nobody is exempt from bad drivers and I wouldn't even fault nvidia for their driver mistakes either. It happens, but people will only cherry pick and not turn up their FoV to see the big picture. I've run into two kinds of nVidia bigots: 1. The one who has been nVidia for as long as they remember and even if they were to be shown this data they just say "shut up faggot". These are people who have never looked at benchmarks. Not even once. The only reason that they continue to purchase nVidia is because they would feel stupid if they found out they had been making bad purchasing decisions for many years. It's the same reason people will defend a product vehemently even when it's proven to be a poor purchase. They just feel dumb for doing it. It's also the same reason people will defend whatever they say as being correct even when they know they are wrong because they feel stupid. 2. The person who is new to PC Gaming and "heard" nVidia is the best so they just go with that. No argument that nVidia is the fastest (for the reasons we've seen in this video), but they certainly aren't always the best for the money. AMD's whole strategy is to cater more to the mid-high range because they've been so starved for cash between the nVidia mindshare problem and Intel's involvement in sabotaging AMD in the mid-2000's. You show them benchmarks and they look at them, but they don't understand them. Tell them "You can get more for your money with this AMD GPU and still play what you want at 60FPS, mostly very high settings" and you'll receive "But my friend says nVidia is better for everything and AMD has bad drivers." Come on, if AMD was so bad they'd be out of the market like the rest of the graphics chip makers (or absorbed into the remaining ones). They need to think for themselves, but they are too lazy to learn to interpret benchmarks and when that happens, they'll just give in to the same lame old rhetoric they heard from the start. I've seen so many friends devolve from this into bigot #1. Nowadays I try to avoid PC component conversation with them because they are so pro-nVidia. They hate that AMD is even trying to compete but these idiots don't realize or refuse to realize that we all get fucked in the end if that happens. I just don't see how they can ignore the lack of competition when we're getting bent over so hard by telecom companies in North America already. Right now, the RX 480 in many cases is the better buy due to nVidia's greed and driving up prices of their 1060 6GB's, although it's coming back down. It's still too early to say who will have the better performance in DX12, but based on current trends, I'm convinced AMD has the head start atm. The 1050Ti at MRSP is, in my opinion, the best purchase under $200, but when you really look at the pricing, it's like $20-25 cheaper than the RX 470. Why would anyone buy that when they can go for an RX 470 (Or even a 480 vs a 470)? Well, if money and/or power is an issue, then that's why. nVidia have fucking dominated this generation with their performance-to-TDP ratio. No power on the 2-fan EVGA 1050Ti? Fuck yes. I told a frugal friend to go out and buy the 1050Ti because it's perfect for him. But when it comes to price/performance, the 480 is still the better bang-for-your-buck in the long term. It's the reason I finally bought the MSI RX 480 Gaming X last week. I really wanted a GTX 1060 for it's power efficiency and performance, but the pricing was just ridiculous compared to the 480.

Man I was so disappointed... basically my R9 390 died and I sent it for RMA. So they didn't have any R9 390 spare, so I got moneyback and I had to pick between going for a RX 480 that would have been some 20€ extra or spending a bit more 80€ and getting the 1070 GTX as a part of my RMA claim. So I went with the 1070 GTX. It's really sad that AMD had no RX 490 to compete would have gotten that.
@aoelp
@aoelp 8 лет назад
Well, if you got the 1070 for only under 100€ over your 390 then that is decent since the 390 would not even be worth 210€ anymore, still a great card though. And also, I agree so much with AdoredTV, AMD needs money to compete, otherwise the GPU market will become a monopoly just like CPU already is today.

Well I do have a 2560×1080 and dual monitor setup, one thing that really buged me about the R9 390 is it didn't downclock memory when doing browsing and desktop applications so it ran at a constant 8000 Mhz maybe thats why it died?
@aoelp
@aoelp 8 лет назад
Mew I'd say no, sadly the 290/390(X) just die pretty quickly with a rate nearly as high as 10%. My first 290X was the reference "jet plane", so I wanted to change the cooler, but did it improperly so I had to sell it as dead on eBay, my next card is my secondary until today (XFX 290X) and my ASUS 290X did die on me within a few months so I got a replacement that is working to date. I think if the card survives the first months or year, it is unlikely that it will die on you, so just stay save by buying from companies with warranty only.

Wiktor Z, indeed AMD had great drivers lately and nVidia's drivers have been hit and miss. I think it was years of consumer's perception of AMD having bad drivers that made them flock to nVidia even when AMD had the faster card. All my friends think this way and I can't convince them to try AMD. eg. a couple of months ago when one of them needed a mid range card and went with a GTX1060 instead of RX480

Great video. AMD has had a PR problem for years. Solution: 1. Kill the Radeon name - It's synonynous for "worse than GeForce" by the masses. 2. Create a new name and bring out a card thats better than the top GeForce model

It's more of a marketing issue AMD(actually ATI) has had for a long time. Radeon is a powerful name. It's just the massive fanboys in websites like TomsHardware where newbies are looking for help to build computers and get false information like "Nvidia=best" no matter what.
@tlita93

Oh man.... I literally had no idea about this situation, I mean how bad it was. I'm gonna get depressed after this video(lol) mate, I really, really feel sorry for AMD. Yes, that what I really mean and honestly I do respect and sincerely envy Nvidia cards too, from recent years, let's say from Maxwell, Pascal I don't count as a new architecture. But again this is really serious monopoly, like you said, shocking indeed. Maybe AMD won't even try to beat or reach the level of Nvidia, but rather stay in mid to high end tier of GPUs, since they are a lot cheaper to manufacture, especially if you get the node down or even outran Nvidia with it. I am so happy you are back with video(s), almost forgot how good they were man. I was much younger in those day of GTX 200 series and my first GPU was HD4850 paired with AMD 5200+ I think, which was my own choice, not marketing, not store recommendation just my choice by my research. At the time I did not know a lot about architectures or anything that in detail like now, but there was a lot of talk about how 200 series was really hot and power hungry and really expensive, especially in country like mine, Serbia.. P.S. Sorry for the long(er) comment. :)

This makes me sad, I did always wonder why people kept buying nVidia and a lot of vendors only sold nVidia, when ATI were always better bang per buck and historically better performance. People don't seem to look at detail, they just seem to buy the most expensive card they can afford and assume it's best. . . . .
@The_Noticer.
@The_Noticer. 8 лет назад
Hm, instead of chastising the "average gamer" outright, there might be another explanation for it. Seeing as they're average gamers, there's a good chance they were also not building their own systems. Especially back then, building them was nothing like the LEGO it is today. My guess is, Nvidia had much more sway with the OEM market than AMD had.
@adoredtv
@adoredtv 8 лет назад
The flip of that is Nvidia has more sway with OEM's because people buy Nvidia. I actually saw a marketing slide aimed at OEM's from Nvidia which said that. They were flogging their old GT 520 which was completely beaten by some low-end 5000-series card or something similar and their reasoning was "more people buy Nvidia anyway". I tried to find it again for this video but couldn't get my hands on it. Either way, unless people get educated on the facts they will always be marketed into poor decisions.
@The_Noticer.
@The_Noticer. 8 лет назад
AdoredTV Well, might be a bit on the late side for that. Because Maxwell and Pascal have them pretty much beat on all factors. Bit hard to sway people to consider buying AMD when at the moment the cards are simply not better. Some enthusiasts can certainly be persuaded for the long game, but not customers who think in the "now". The 1060 is significantly more power efficient and on average faster. Engines like that of Hitman being the exception. Be mindful that tests that use "total system wattage" from the wall are way off. Because they don't account for difference in driver overhead. And between brands, there is a difference in CPU load. Always check sites that intercept power usage. media.bestofmicro.com/H/C/595488/original/22-Overview-Gaming.png Lower overhead API's aren't, atleast for now, not yielding them any benficial results either. Either due to overexpectations, games not having high enough drawcalls for it to matter or incompetence by the developers with these lower overhead API's. And then there still is the issue of their driver overhead on DX11, which is still the predominant API. Admitted, Polaris has certainly made strides to improvement, but frankly there's not enough reviewers that test these cards with CPU's that are more expected to be in the systems. People buying 480's or 1060's generally don't have 4.6ghz 6700K's or 5960X to cancel out the overhead. On that note, the lack of CPU influence in games lately has been conspicuously absent. Which is wierd because i'm beginning to see my 4670K struggle in some games, even on Nvidia's driverset.
@adoredtv
@adoredtv 8 лет назад
I can see reasons for choosing the 1060 over the RX 480, especially if saving power is the #1 priority. The point I'm making is that most "enthusiasts" would have chosen the RX 480 though, yet that is definitely not being seen in the mass market. I doubt that the average consumer is choosing the 1060 over the 480 simply because it uses 20-30W less power. In fact the average 1060 buyer simply has no clue how much power the 1060 or the 480 is using. The problem is, the average 1060 buyer simply doesn't know the 480 exists. You are correct that the oem's are also choosing Nvidia, but they are choosing Nvidia based on mindshare rather than anything else.
@The_Noticer.
@The_Noticer. 8 лет назад
AdoredTV Well maybe, i'm not as harsh on your mindshare theory as before. Yet, from an OEM perspective less power means a cheaper power supply. Which in bulk does carry weight. It also means they can get away with a casefan less maybe, though i'm not sure on that one.
@adoredtv
@adoredtv 8 лет назад
Yes that's true about power, same as it would have been back in the 5770 and 550 ti days. ;) In the end we can look for a lot of possible reasons but the one that covers them all is that Nvidia just simply has that much more mindshare. OEM's know it, I used to be one and I saw what happened from that perspective too. I had a distributor that wouldn't buy AMD parts to start with and would instead "wait on them to drop in price before buying". All of this stuff together is basically contributing to the shitty situation we are in now.

I'm just praying for Zen to at least be decent in IPC. The 980 Ti is staying though. Both the 970 and the 980 Ti was and is awesome cards.
