@@graegoles8382 glad to hear it. Moonlight is fantastic but didn't know about sunshine until this video. still, something that Nvidia should be providing or at least not taking away like this. It was an amazing feature that made me vendor locked.
They're trying to push people to use their GeForce NOW game streaming service. NVIDIA again with their ridiculous greed. I'm done with NVIDIA for now and going AMD.
nvidia wants to make money that is why they are stopping it. It could be the end all be all best thing ever and if they can't charge us a penny for it then they don't give a fuck.
This is so sad. I use moonlight all the time because it’s way better than Steam Link or AMD Link. It’s one of the main reasons I own an Nvidia GPU. If Nvidia stops supporting it and Sunshine ends up being fairly equivalent across team red, green, and blue then I might switch back to AMD. Nvidia had my money for Nvenc and game stream. But now with AV1 cards out across the board and game stream sun setting, I have no reason to pay the green tax…
One of the shortcomings for steam in home streaming is also doesn't support I refresh rate streaming for 1440p and as well you can't add anything that doesn't have an EXE. So since a lot of the games are encrypted from game pass you can't add them to steam and you can't add the Xbox app because it's not a exe, it's a uwp
Nvidia has lost any future money from me and my customers in the Android TV space. The Shield TV is regressing with the addition of ads and removal of key selling features. Really shows how little control we have over the devices we purchase nowadays. Definitely going to be looking into Moonlight and Sunshine.
One of the few nvidia features that I actually used. I have a shield that I used and devices that used moonlight. Yet another reason why I won't buy another nvidia gpu unless they can compete on features AND value.
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you are referring to as Sunshine is actually GNU/Sunshine, or as I've recently taken to call it, GNU plus Sunshine. Sunshine is not a DIY cloud streaming service unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU application made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities, and vital system components comprising a full cloud based application as defined by POSIX.
I was pissed when Nvidia announced this. But sunshine and moonlight actually works faster and are more stable than game stream was. I have a small audio hiccup when starting a game with moonlight and sunshine but it goes away once the game starts. There is nothing wrong with starting to use sunshine now.
Yea gamestream works so much better than steam link and in the same house you can't even tell you're steaming. You would think you're playing on an Xbox but with much better graphics
Used mine for years and its been solid, does what you want it to do, easily hackable for a more power user focused perspective. Runs highest quality stuff you can throw at it still really, hope to use it for many years more. The Bluetooth on my slightly older gen one does suck though, Xbox One controllers are laggy AF with it, best to have a long ass controller to directly connect it via USB
How many times have streaming platforms failed or changed terms to charge more? More and more it's apparent that having a separate gaming rig in the family room with a steam account is the right idea. Those mini PCs on Amazon like the Beelink GTR5 seem perfect for this.
Thanks for this explainer video. Saw headlines but I couldn't believe it. This is one of the top reasons I got an Nvidia GPU. If sunshine becomes so good and AMD is catching up on encoding then my next GPU might be back to AMD.
My Shield started acting wonky after one of the updates this past year. SLING TV would always jutter plus other bugs. What a shame, too. It was my favorite for a while. Now it's a plex server and BeeTV host. Roku for everything else.
Hello, good afternoon... I have a question. For 4K games without HDR, is it better to choose the yuv 444 8-bit color space or the yuv 420 10-bit color space? Thank you very much
I've gotten Sunshine to run really well on my Samsung Galaxy Book 2 pro, which doesn't have any Nvidia hardware to begin with. Sunshine is the way to go forward!
Is the Book 2 Pro the host or the device you stream too ? :D If it's the host... have you streamed in native 4k60fps to a 4k screen? Still smooth? Because i've startet all this with FireTV and Steam Link... 1080p was somehow okay... but 4k just unplayable... but with Nvidia Shield and Moonlight 4k60fps is perfectly smooth with almost no input lag. I hope sunshine will be able to deliver this quality too.
Been using Sunshine for over a year and it works quite well. Agree that the setup process is a little clunky/confusing and the UI isn't as polished nor does it appear to have automatic settings optimization. But honestly I just start the stream without opening a specific game (so I see the Windows desktop) and then launch whatever game normally.
It's disgusting that a company will take away something that is the bread and butter you buy one because they can't monetize it. If it doesn't make them money than just cancel it 😑
Im so upset about this..I extensively use GameStream. Ive been looking into using Moonlight/sunlight because once gamestream drops moonlight is gonna be no good either.
This was the main way I was using the Nvidia Shield. Luckily most the games I was playing was steam games, but it does not work as well. I understand that they are trying to sell a subscription but it's not like the Shield device was free, and this is why I bought it.
started looking in to this as I seen a rumor that Nvidia Gamestream was ending and it may effect moonlight....which figures because i finally got Gigabit fiber internet and can finally steam outside of the home....My use case is a bit extreme compared to others as I am wanting seamless high refresh and or 4k streaming using one program on multiple platforms (stream in home to PC or laptop, or steamdeck and nvidia shields, and then outside of home to PC, phone, tablet, laptop, steam deck or whatever I take. I'm running a server(ish) at home for plex BUT its overkill as it serves as another gaming PC and has a 5900x and RTX 4080. I primarily game with it on the home theater projector and use it for Wireless VR to the Quest 2. Right now I'm trying to find research on both how muchlatency is added as well as image quality of the availible options (sunlite as it's developed, steam link / remote play, parsec, rainway etc)
Question I'm not a big-time gamer or nothing like that I've always been interested in the Nvidia shield but can you still download emulator to it the play all the old retro games that I used to play and what that cost me anything
0:51 You said it man one's free one's not goodbye free thing - glad you mentioned Sunshine, those devs will be receiving any money I would have spent on a new Shield. Alas, I have still gone just hardwired HDMI anyway. Obviously if you can, do it.
Oh no, I was on my way to buy a shield pro. But I wanted it firstly to stream from my Pc and secoundly I wanted no ads, which I have on my Samsung TV in the UI and I hate it. Is there any other product that is comparable with the shield pro with those features?
The Shield TV was my go to for 7 years but my 2015 unit got very flaky after that recent big update and now this. I picked up an Apple TV to solve the Plex and stability issues I was having and will find another solution for streaming to TV.
The problem for Nvidia with gamestream for consumers is that it directly competes against GeForce now. I used moonlight over wireguard and it was fantastic. I'm not surprised this happened
I just built a gaming pc with a nvidia GPU so this topic is of interest. I always that this was the end of their PC > device capability, but apparently not.
thanks for info, as always. I own an NS pro 2019 and will never buy another one. It's been a very negative experience for me. I didn't pay a premium amount for adverts on my device. I don't use the GameStream service, but the fact that Nvidia is yet again adding more pay to use this device only reinforces my resolve to never purchase another nvidia product again. The only features which make this device ok are the AI upscaling and the "find remote" capability. Other than those two, I don't see it worth the money.
@@dmo848 good to know. For software comparisons, I find mine has connection issues which causes the plex server to freeze the system, so i don't use the plex server. That's with a usb stick attached. Similarly, the network connection has a problem every 1-3months, requiring plex to be reinstalled. It also needs to be restarted few weeks, for various issues.
the nvdii shield hardware itself is as useful as a expired tuna can if you take away gamestream from it(still is if you consider moonlight). there are millions of cheaper alternatives just to stream movies.
Hello there, just wanted your opinion about nvidia shield tv. Is it time to let it go? No updates in a long time. I have Pro and Original Shield. Thanks.
@@LonSeidman thanks for the response. The original is starting to have issues with some apps, however pro is working OK. Dolby vision is why I keep using pro. My friends have started to opt for other hardware. Thanks Lon.
Usaba este servicio de game stream en mi NVIDIA Shield TV Pro y era muy bueno ya que podía retransmitir los juegos a 4K pero ahora con el Steam Link solo puedo a 1080
i know i'm late, but steam link isn't a option of the same caliber, the buggy/laggy, there's something about it that simply isn't as good as gamestreaming with moonlight.
I've been looking forward to a new 2023 Nvidia shield model with HDMI 2.1 and 4k 120hz just for the use with gamestream... I guess not anymore.. you can't play Fortnite or Minecraft via steam link.
I don’t game on the Shield so it doesn’t bother me one bit. I agree with you I pray they update the Shield it’s my main streaming device. I have the 2017 Pro version.
Man I NEVER had a good experience with Gamestream. It was always a back and forth with Nvidia support. Me upgrading hardware. Finally one day I tried Steam Link through the same hardware and never looked back. Idk what it was, Gamestream just gave me problem after problem. Like it would always stream the wrong monitor or something. Spent more time troubleshooting that actually playing. Really wanted to like it.
This sucks coz I use moonlight quite a lot on the apple TV. I used to have a Shield and used the native app for it a lot as well. Not a lawyer, but this seems illegal
It’s a bummer to lose features, but it’s amazing to me that these old Nvidia Shield TV’s are still better than the newest versions of other stream boxes. Amazon’s Fire devices, for instance, are horrible in comparison.
Sadly the Shield is still the best android tv box on the market. Most android boxes are still in bad shape, not supported or heavily locked down (Fire TV). I hope there will be a new shield generation in 2023/24
24.99 CAD for GameNow. How ridiculous is it that we buy an item to stream games and it comes with an added price comparable to media streaming prices (netflix, prime etc)
Ive been following all of this cloud gaming stuff im here to tell you - GEForce Now is the ONLY one that has got something thats viable with the ultimate package on 500mbps + internet. Nvidia cracked this code by having the new 4080 class overcompensate with framerate enough to remove enough latency to make this long coming pipe dream usable as they have finally done. However im not interested in a single one of their "supported" games and the games that my wife wanted to play do not upload properly as steam and ubisoft are competing for the game sale itself and trying to make the process as sleazy, difficult and punitively impossible to link accounts etc. If amazon, microsoft and nvidia offer compatibility with their streaming devices and platforms this might all work otherwise they have hit a brick wall thats going to piss you off worse than when a company tells you your password is incorrect but when you change it to Your password they say you cannot use the same password.
I've realized as I get older that PC should no longer be a complete packaged solution (jack of all trades). Instead gaming will be focused on PS5 and for any computer related work, I'll be getting a laptop. PC gaming is currently lacking (not missing) many great features that is supported on my HDMI 2.1 capable TV. HDR is horrible on PC, tweaking game settings is also horrible. Stuff should just work out of the box and consoles are currently offering that seamless experience. If I'll get a gaming PC it will be something smaller in size, similar to what Valve used to offer with their Steam computers.
To each their own. Gaming on an Ultrawide is much more fun than on a 16:9 TV from my perspective. I agree with you regarding HDR, but the PS5 and Xbox One X are too underpowered for my taste and laptops are too disposable. A desktop with an RTX 3080 will last you through at least 2-3 generations of an Xbox or Playstation. With software like Primocache on a PC, you can also use an SSD as a caching system for your Hard Drives, which allows you to get PS5-ssd-like performance from a large 7200rpm gaming hard drive. This is something that you simply can't do with a laptop or console. You're also completely forgoing any game trainers that tend to be available for PC games which allow you to skip a lot of the tedious tasks that games these days tend to have you do.
@@xJohnNguyen Gaming on 21:9 or Ultra Wide is mostly a niche and not the main target of most mainstream gaming companies. This is not something to rely on as readily available or officially supported for all games. What history has taught us, it's never about underpowered hardware being an issue but rather smart or proper utilization of what you got, especially that which is more popular such as consoles. This is why the most sold and popular games on PC are actually ports from consoles and even if some are not classified at ports, objective analysis show worse performance compared to console counterparts. Sure you "currently" get more visually pleasing Ray-tracing but the overall fidelity is often than not marginal. Let's not forget about frequent stuttering because of bad optimization of shader compilation. When was the last time you watched Digital Foundry reviewing PC releases? Even the top of the line PC machines including 13th gen Intel and RTX4090 will not yield better performance or aesthetics because of the above. Even the new AMD Smart Access Memory and Windows 11 DirectStorage offered rare occasions of performance boosts, as the SSD speeds on at least PS5 still resulted in better load times. Again the hardware is simply the potential unless it's being fully utilized. This is even before we include the ridiculous costs of building a behemoth of machine which bleeds any bank account for thousands of dollars. While you still get at least 80-90% of enjoyment as what's on the PC when purchasing a console for 500$ There's no escaping the tedious configurations and manual optimizations just to get a PC game nicely running and making sure your rig is working nicely together without issues of conflicting drivers. In my case, this type of fiddling I don't have time with anyone like back in the day.
Consumers need to make a stink and bombard Nvidia with disapproval. People including myself use this regularly. If you want to quit supporting it then whatever but pushing an update that gets rid of it is BS.
Man I am using moonlight for not only playing games but using my Windows pc for remote connection with Zerotier. Used many Remote control software but NOTHING, I repeat NOTHING, comes close to Gamestream. It is so fast. I mean 3-4 ms latency for receiving input encoding the video going through the network and getting decoded at client all at 3-4 ms. I was planning on purchasing a Tablet with keypad and trackpad for remote controlling my beefy gaming laptop from anywhere. Hope Sunshine works as Nvidia Gamestream. 🥺🥺
and AI upscaling from the newer models. On my 100" 4k Laser TV the AI upscaler works wonders for 1080p 3D H-SBS/H-OU content. But beside that yea... Gamestream was the main reason for the Shield.
Well, guess I no longer have a reason to buy nvidia. They just killed it. Planning on upgrading my build this year, and was debating on switching to AMD. Gamestream kept me on nvidias side. But now there's no reason to keep buying Nvidia.
I got sunshine set up in about 10 minutes. I do think they can streamline it, someone like yourself can easily make a tutorial. Slight hassle but it works great. What is nvidia's endgame here, it's a feature that Nvidia owners have loved getting them to GeForce experience makes no sense no one's going to go there. Just makes no sense, is there something else they're going to bring out some type of device that would lead to this?
Forced adds, and then this. I wonder what else they will be doing to make their services worse. Is it possible to revert to the version that had no ads? Maybe some hacked version that can be put on?
Steam link doesn't perform anyway near as well as Nvidia Gamestream. Honestly, screw Nvidia for this. This was the sole reason why I bought my Shield. I already had a Chomecast Ultra before, and this is effectively what they've turned their Shield into now. A significantly more expensive, but also unstable Chromecast, that crashes every now and then.
Good. Now I can throw that crap shield away and play on my Xbox Series X in my living room. Gonna switch to an AMD GPU also too while I'm at it. That was a great feature for playing in a living room with a PC in a bedroom. Goodbye Nvidia Shield!
I just bought an Nvidia laptop so I can get these features but wtf with Nvidia did they do not satisfied with the money did they earn from selling graphic cards?
This is probably because of the steam deck. Game stream works great using moonlight. I will never purchase a subscription for GeForce now, because I can't use my giant software library and the using Internet will always introduce latency and artifacts.
Really sad to see this go, and will now consider the switch to team Red going forward depending. Gamestream is brilliant, works very very well....why remove it? Not cool Nvidia. Considering this is quite a major feature of the Nvidia Shield, would I be silly to assume that Nvidia SHOULD reduce the cost of these devices, seen as it's now missing one of its key features. Yeah of course I'm silly to assume that. Greedy greedy Nvidia.
I suspect greed is what pushed Nvidia to remove the gamestream feature. I can't even do 1080p on gamestream now. It'll say you have to sign up or have a membership to get quality streaming? Fkng bullshit....not going to pay for that scam.
@@gdiggedy9 I had tried them out the last few days. It works out great...better than Gamestream as far as streaming quality and latency (I can even do 4K now). Nvidia probably purposely disable the quality function to force users to pay for subscription, fking BS!! Not going to fall for that scam.
@@reptilexcq2 Moonlight is amazing! I've been using it for a couple years now. Haven't set up Sunshine yet, but going to soon. I agree. Nvidia is crazy if they think removing Gamestream will push people towards GeForce Now. I already use GeForce Now too as its great for saving storage and allows me to play on the go anywhere. Still a terrible move ditching Gamestream though.
Good question... If they can block this ability from server side.. I guess.... Game over... Make me wonder why they didn't do it... But I already installed sunshine/moonlight Very intuitive and works great 😃 So you can still play PC games on shield
i think its really stupid that on top of buying the game i also need to pay nvidia even more money for the most barebones feature in existence, the ability to stream to my other devices
They'll likely kill it on the Geforce Experience side too. I think there's also an Nvidia server-side thing here to as it needs you to be logged into your account for this to work.
