@wildside316

@jimanderson9509
@jimanderson9509 8 лет назад
+GeoNeilUK I agree... Yes, the wrestling isn't the greatest, but in their defense they were just kids. But all the work that it takes to pull something like this off and to think that these kids managed to do it as successfully as they did is just amazing. Promoting a league, running house shows, maintaining a weekly cable tv show...incredible.
@dantheman8103
@dantheman8103 8 лет назад
+GeoNeilUK They also had a LOT more freedom then they do today. I am sure there is more to the story and the parents were more involved than the documentary claimed. (one that given who made it is basically one person's story) But I am not surprised completely they pulled it off. For on most fans didn't have access to dirt sheets in the pre internet age. So most thought because wrestling was "fake" that it hurt about as much as a pillow fight. So doubt many realized how dangerous what they were doing actually was. But also mostly kids had more freedom. Yeah obviously they were just kids, but people weren't as worried kids would break and didn't have them in bubbles and under observation at all times. To a reasonable point they could roam free to do things. Do agree that the parents probably shouldn't have let them do this but the world was a different place back then.

I'm going to be honest here. I was actually relieved when I heard that those two men stole the ring and money and nothing else. As soon as the video brought up that the 16 year old was actually 26, I thought it would end with a bad touch. "You kids want to be stars, don't you?"

@superstr5
@superstr5 8 лет назад
He didn't steal anyone's money! They both bought the ring together,and collectively ran shows for a very long time,without steve taking so much as 1 dime!! He's also the one who hauled the ring around.So after the last show,he took the ring! Which was fair,since they bought the ring together,and they kept all the money! And the police never threatened him! He gave them the ring,cause he bought a different one and didn't need it! He never pretended to be younger than he was either!! The whole (so called) biography is full of lies,to try and sell more copies!!
@NWFWrestling
@NWFWrestling 8 лет назад
+megamarsonic This guy is so out of the loop. He wasn't even around for any of this. Steve did not buy the ring with me me nor did he run shows with me as some kind of partner. He was helpful, yes. I could go further in how Steve swindled money in the league. I found out years later that he would go up to new kids that show up on their first day and tell them they have to pay him $20 as an entrance fee, then pocket the money. There were many kids who payed Steve actual cash for him to get them wrestling trunks, and again, he simply pocketed the cash. As far as his age, we have it all on audio in the background on Studio Taping 43 where he admits his real age after I found and confronted him about it. Trust me, Steve was no saint at all.
@NWFWrestling
@NWFWrestling 8 лет назад
+superstr5 I love how you come on here and try to counter all the documentary claims. I am in touch with dozens of the kids (now adults) who remember just how crooked Engstrom was, and besides that, I lived through it. Where were you during those years? Doesn't matter to me if your related to him or not. You're entitled to your own opinions but you are NOT entitled to just make up your own facts about what you think happened back then.

I might be the odd ball on this but I think nwf could still work or a kids wrestling show, but I would have it rin different. 1. Parents would have to sign a waiver. 2.I would expect them to know the basics. 3.Just like WWE Saturday Morning Slam, no head shots. 4.They would need to be watched closely.

I agree but I would like to add a couple things such as adult referees(and other nearby staff) with advance frist aid and other medical training, no weapons at all, something softer than a normal ring floor, minimum age of 8 or 10 and a maximum age of 16, and parents and older siblings should play as manager like roles to help protect the kids

I could easily see a kids' promotion working if they have enough of a budget right at the beginning for: -A proper ring -On-site medical personnel -Actual trainers -At least two cameras and people skilled to use them -At least two wireless microphones with at least 100ft range, and speakers in a position within that range -A DJ and a deck to play and cut music appropriately -An in-house composer for original music Everything else that even the most barebones indie promotion has can come later when the promotion has more money. Hell, you might even be able to cover that with a crowdfunding campaign.

I would watch with envy at the lucky few who did have their own wacky shows on our local Access 10, even if their programs had virtually no worthwhile content and lasted just one episode. One (two episode-lived) half-hour comedy show devoted ten minutes of the first ep to an onscreen game of Intellivision Baseball, along with goofy narration. (The longest-running "series" was a weekend-long broadcast of music videos and top 40 songs, with phoned-in messages and dedications displayed onscreen in a spool of Chyron text. Everybody loved it, as did I.) I had some friends who likely would've been more than happy to join me in some crazy, pointless variety/sketch thingy like the ones we saw, but getting to the studio was nigh-impossible at that tender age, and there'd be adults to contend with with our bizarre notions, and a bit of a learning curve to the technology before whatever it was that we could cook up would grace the local airwaves. Ah, to be young and ambitious again... These guys went light-years further than any dumb thing I could have ever dreamed up, and despite the obvious problems of kid pro wrestling ("...THE PARENTS?!"), I applaud them. Well-done promotion all around, and just plain ballsy to boot.

There was another wrestling organization run by kids that used to be popular, it was called Wrestling Takedown Federation (W.T.F.). It was created by four kids from Colorado and I think there name was Stanley, Lyle, Derek, and Lenny (who died during their final show, but that wasn't the reason the show was over).

People watched anything in the 80s. You had shitty primitive video games and no internet----the only options for decent entertainment were movies and any unfiltered crap on TV.

+Jon Taylor (JonTheBroPony) wow.. just wow.. calling someone else stupid with a rant like that? if you think there wasn't bad shows in the 80s-90s then you are very very wrong. mash was popular let's make a spinoff / sequel series called aftermash, which throws away most of what we know about the characters.. oh that failed, well let's try making a spinoff of the failed spinoff... "W*A*L*T*E*R" (even the name looks bad) there was a cartoon series about a husband and wife singing duo.. their names? spaghetti and meatball. i know it came out in 1990, but just look up cop rock! quite frankly i can't remember to many 80s cartoons, or even many tv shows... i even searched for some and never heard of most of them. i think Janie's point was.. you couldn't just look for something to watch on youtube or netflix.. you just flipped thru the channels, so maybe seeing some kids "wrestle" would have been entertaining enuff to get people to stop and watch, and that point is very much correct. ironically some of the best shows failed.. misfits of science, for example basically could have been Heroes, or any of the other superhero shows / movies that exist now.

***** To a degree that's true, because a lot of people still watch dumb crap like Pewdiepie or Honey Boo Boo or something like that---but in the 80s, it was far more limited. No RU-vid, no internet, no streaming, no amazing video games, no social media. I can get more information today from educational YT channels like CGP Grey or Crash Course than any TV channel from the 80s. I can search google & other engines to get massive info from the nebulous web superhighway, as opposed to pilfering a tedious library or reading some newspaper in the 1980s. Those were the dark ages of technology and thankfully, 2015 is much more accessible and smarter than the ignorant 80s.

The story itself is very interesting; I've never seen the actual DVD / documentary, but there's also a book about this entire thing that I stumbled across back in high school that talks about it in a lot more detail from what I'm seeing here, as well as talking about the reactions of some of the parents. According to the end of the book, Shawn Crossen actually went on and tried to wrestle for real after all of this, up to and including having a match in a local fed with a very young Sean Waltman, but something happened involving a promoter and he decided he wasn't going to pursue it anymore. I remember being fascinated by this story ten years ago; now that I'm a lot older I definitely have a lot of the same questions you do, lol. It's pretty insane how much times have changed compared to a time where something like this was allowed to happen.

Parents don't often understand the nitty gritty behind what their kids are into, at least not during this time. Their parents probably thought, like many others ignorant about pro wrestling, that because it's all a work, that there was no chance that wrestlers could get legit hurt. A lot of people who look down on wrestling today still think that way: because it's a work, it can't possibly be dangerous.

This brings back some memories. I was not in NWF but in a similar promotion in Oklahoma. I wrestled from the age of 12 to 16 and did some stupid stuff. I got my fair share of injuries but it is a miracle I'm not dead or paralyzed. I'm now deaf in on ear and have suffered a brain hemorrhage. Seriously kids when you see the words "Don't try this at home" You should listen. I'd love to get back into wrestling, and I've been working with IPW in northern Iowa trying to get back into it.
@Aevilbeast
@Aevilbeast 5 лет назад
Whoa, holy crap... What caused the deafness and the brain hemorrhage? I hope you eventually get back into wrestling! Some of the stuff kids do in backyard wrestling would be insane for some who was trained for years to do, much less a kid with absolutely no training. It's kinda sad to see these kids love for wrestling and their want to be a part of it in someway, only for that passion to end up hurting or seriously injuring themselves for it.
