I went uptown to Fort Tryon Park because I knew the flower garden would be in spring bloom and you’d get the full effect of the parks beauty and vibe. This 67-acre public park is located In the Hudson Heights and Inwood neighborhoods of upper Manhattan, with an awesome view of the Hudson River to the west. There’s miles of paved pathways and open lawns, plus the amazing Heather Garden, which features over 500 varieties of plants, trees and shrubs, most of which are viewable year round. Last but not least, there’s the Cloisters, which is a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art that houses almost 5000 medieval works. The buildings architecture alone is worth seeing.
Right outside the south entrance next to the subway station is an extension of the park that features volleyball courts, ping pong tables and two playgrounds. You can park for free if you drive there or take the A train to the 190th Street station. Probably the most unique subway station in NYC!
There’s much history to this location as well. Before it was known what it is now, this area was known as Fort Washington and it was a battle site along the Hudson River during the Revolutionary War. British troops invaded and took over the area. While stationed there, they named the site after Sir William Tryon, the last British governor of colonial New York City. Even after the British withdrawal, the name remained. In 1917, John D. Rockefeller purchased much of the land, wanting to develop it into a park, which was eventually done when Rockefeller Jr. contacted the Olmsted Brothers to develop the park. Upon completion it was gifted to the City of New York for public use, on agreement that they preserve its original design and maintain upkeep of everything. Which it appears they definitely have.
