The NYC Subway just keeps getting worse, and now since more and more riders use it without paying, it's becoming a lawless dump instead of the world class transit system new yorkers deserve....

I'm from Germany and i am amazed how Americans managed to mess this up so badly. There are no gates and nothing stopping you from getting onto buses and trains. Very rarely there is a conductor checking the tickets but it happens like once every 100 rides. Yet fare evasion isn't nearly as big an issue here as it seems to be in New York. And i can assure you, this most certainly isn't because Germans are some morally superior people. It's simply because fares are actually affordable for poor people here.
@Potatwielder

But you have gates for commuter trains and metro right, right?😅
@theincrediblefox
@theincrediblefox День назад
@@Potatwielder Nope. No gates, barriers or anything. You can just walk onto any train platform if you want. What i'll say though, is that on commuter trains conductors checking for tickets are a bit more common, maybe like once every 20 rides or so and on long distance and high speed trains there are conductors on almost every single train.
@DaCouchWarrior

@@Potatwielder Metro trains (or U-Bahn in German), Commuter Train (S-Bahn) or Regional Trains all do NOT have gates in Germany, you can walk straight into the trains, and many stations are very simple, with only platforms. The key is to actually have some punishment (60 euros) for those who are caught by ticket inspectors. Inspectors randomly ride trains and busses to check tickets. Also there's a somewhat cheap Deutschlandsticket, with which you can ride all regional/communtor train/busses for 49 euros per month (29 for students).

"no emergency exit" is an immediate red flag, no matter what systems you have in place to open the gates in an emergency. what if for whatever reason, there's nobody in the booth during an emergency? what if there's a power outage and the gates can't open? there's a reason that wouldn't fly in the united states: fire regulations prohibit it, and for good reason. on that note, doors that are spring-loaded and thus open when power to the motor/solenoid/whatever is cut along with an emergency override switch on the wall that mechanically cuts power to the gates and activates the fire alarm would be a good solution that balances safety with stopping fare-dodgers.
@1996Horst
@1996Horst 2 дня назад
@@comradeLuciennetrust me, sweeden has far more strict fire protection and emergency exit laws than the US. And the system in Sweeden can empty any Station in less than 1 minute. The gates shown in this video would allow a max of 100 people in 1 minute, so assuming you have 3 gates per exit that means a max of 300 people per minute. People gonna jump those normal gates like cracy in any emergency and break arms and legs or get trampled to death.

In Russia the metro stations use plastic panel "doors" that open sideways. They're impossible to jump over or crawl underneath. It's also easier to open all of them in case of emergency. Implementing such a solution wouldn't solve the emergency door issue but it'd still be better.

Where I'm living there's no physical barrier in the subway, you can enter without a pass or ticket, but sometimes there are subway conductors at the exit. You must show your pass/ticket to exit otherwise you have to pay a fine. Most people have a pass because if you use public transport daily you're likely to get fined for way more than the pass would've cost you. The fine is about 2.5x of a monthly pass.

Yeah, public transit should be free, it already has a budget and tickets don't matter, since the US has currency sovereignty it doesn't "make profit" or some shit like that. What most people fail to realise is that the government doesn't operate like a business or a household. Also, as for the politicians part, the wealth tax and estate tax should definitely be brought back, stupid rich politicians are mostly created by their corporate donors that want to lobby and shit so they can make even more money while you can barely afford food. Most industries should be nationalised to prevent that from happening, it does stunt gdp growth since those industries won't be chasing profit anymore, but it doesn't really matter

I have seen the stark difference of how Japan runs its public transport compared to New York. The efficiency, cleanliness, safety are top notch and no one ever thinks of fare evading. It probably is never thought of that one would definitely stand out if they do so with impunity. There were transport officers, but they mostly served to direct people where to go and provided information when asked. It truly was amazing. It was also absolutely safe to walk in the streets at night, and we did so several times with no fear of being accosted, stabbed or shot. All the convenient stores are open 24/7 and some of their merchandise are actually displayed right outside and no one dares to steal. I don't think I've seen homeless folks too. Racial Bias and civil asset forfeiture are 2 clear examples of these problems combined with Crimes being Unpunished in a lot of cases for being "White" And cases where just being "Black" Makes you Suspicious enough to use civil asset forfeiture to charge your car with a crime and all the property inside of it or that just looking at a cop the wrong way or answering their questions can regardless of their racial biases get your property "Legally Stolen" (and in lots of cases stealing more in a year than actual Criminals do including people's houses) by the police who are supposed to be protecting you. And that's just two of hundreds of issues that have been boiling for a long time, and without major and critical ground up Reformation of the police and laws they enforce from a foundational Level they won't be earning back the respect of the people for a long time. It was the inevitable conclusion to systemic corruption and erosion

The reason why the Japan public transport system is so well run & maintained is because it is privately run. It also doesn’t operate 24 hours a day, which allows time for regular maintenance. As for the Japanese society, their citizens have affordable housing, health care, affordable food… it’s a society that isn’t necessarily rich but their basic needs are met # something that millions of Americans are unable to do. And it’s worth noting their society doesn’t have the American individualism & consumerism. Unfortunately too many Americans are a selfish lot.

Dudes can learn a thing or two from the Moscow metro. 5' panels instead of short spinny things (he said name but I forgot), the exit has the same system, but it opens automatically on movement and closes quickly, but if there is an emergency people can just walk through non stop since exit one doesn't try to close fully before opening again, plus there is a booth where worker can open all panels so people can leave quick. Also since the metro is really busy the amount of machines is large (like 20 for entrance on a busy one I use often) and so are the hallways. In suburban train stations and less busy metro stations there are also simple metal barriers which are guarded, mostly opened for people with a large luggage or a bike or something of this sort. There is usually a larger gate for this, but there are so many people during rush hours, it's hard to reach it sometimes. So there is no caged feeling, everything is super open, but you can't jump over (you can try but good luck with that lol). The only way to cheat is for you and your friend to squish together so motion sensor thinks you are one person. One of you will have to pay still tho. And works only during the rush. Also also ☝️ trains arrive every 2-3 minutes on all lines all day every day. The only exception is serious break of a train in the line. They will have to take it from the line to pocket/depo which are located somewhere in the tunnels. If it's some mild technical issue, it usually causes only 5 minutes delay, if something really serious, I think it can take up to 3 hours. Sometimes they have to close several stations on the line and then they get more busses that drive close to closed metro stations. I think you can see it already BUT I LOVE RUSSIAN METRO OMG. @@Buffalo_Soldier I disagree. Having free public transport is nice, but counties who did it you can count on one hand. Moscow metro is endlessly expanding and government needs money to create new lines, digging tens and hundreds of kilometers of tonnels underground isn't cheep. Just find the current map, it will break your brain lol. It's the most predictable and cheep way of transportation here. You can travel from north to south (52 km if measured with the straigh line) for less then a dollar or half cup of coffee here. More than million people use metro every day, trains come every 2 minutes. Such a huge system needs funds to provide same level of comfort. And they also slowly upgrade trains to comfortable places with air conditioners, places for phone charging and digital screen where you can set start and end of your travel to see where you need to change the line. Currently most lines are fully upgraded to new trains. Just imagine how much people should work in there to check tickets and find people without tickets to balance with penalties. Suburban trains have that kind of control, but there are way less people there. For moscow metro, the best way is just to create way when it's hard to cheat the system to begin with.

I live in Poland, but I used to live in the US. The difference between public transport here and in the us is like night and day. Here, when you enter a bus, tram or train no one stops you or checks your ticket. You buy a ticket at a vending machine in the vehicle or at a stop and you scan it. Every once in a while, a plainclothes employee of the public transport services checks if you have a ticket (this happens pretty rarely). If you don't have a ticket you pay a fine. Most people pay because this is a decent country with generaly hard working, honest people.

It's a garbage country with generally shitty people but we managed to nail a few things. Also the chances of getting your ticket checked depends on how often the line is used when it comes to trains. As a person from Saint-Petersburg, Russia, I've never even thought this could be a problem. The subway is cheap, jumping over the turnstiles is a punishable offense and i dont think we have emergency exits, that can be abused. In the 10 months I've lived here, there was exactly one guy that I have seen, that jumped over for free. Edit: however, the bus system is problematic. I think about 20% of people don't pay at all. There's conductors, of course, but they aren't present on every single bus, so if the conductor isn't on the bus, why bother paying? A punishment-less crime! :P

It’s like NYC is pretending to be stupid at this point. They stop enforcing fare evasion and a boatload of other laws, then people don’t pay for the fare because there are no consequences, then MTA raises the fares while doing nothing about fare evasion, and now more people start not paying their fare. Those that paid before see this insanity and stop paying. And honestly why should they? If the city refuses to do anything about crime and makes law abiding citizens pay more to subsidize criminality, people aren’t going to care anymore and ride for free. There has to be a standard that applies to everyone, not just the law abiding “suckers” that end up footing the bill, while criminals get excuses because… they’re criminals?? SMH
