Dance and sing -- and fight in Albany! Recently, workers at a handful of popular NYC restaurants got together to make a music video demanding that New York state lawmakers pass a minimum wage hike to at least $9 this March 2013. Right now, minimum hourly wage is $7.25 for untipped workers and $5.00 for tipped workers. On average, that comes out to about $15,000 annually working full time for untipped workers and about $10,000 base salary for tipped ones. And only servers in the highest-end restaurants pull in big-time tips. What does it all mean? Sixty percent of all New York state restaurant workers are making poverty wages. But some of them found time to rock out to this video to get their message across. A big thank you to the ROC-NY members who appeared in this video!

This is an awesome, very well produced video! Well done! Shared on our page. As a micro-biz with just 2 part time employees (whom we pay closer to a living wage), we are speaking up in support of the wage hike!

AWESOME video! I've posted and forwarded it everywhere. $9 a hour is barely a living wage,so it is a CRIME what restaurant workers are being paid now ! Given that the MTA fare just went up another $1.50 this month, not mention our sky high rents, bills, gas prices etc, working people in the city need higher wages in general. Real New Yorkers are supporting this campaign 100%!!

It's an interesting study in economics as to WHY modest minimum wage hikes don't seem to cause the employment cuts that textbook theory suggests. Demand-side consumption effects? Better wages improve the "human capital" stock of the workers and increase productivity? Labor markets are "sticky" in a way that accommodates minimum wage increases? Definitely a fun topic to ponder....

This doesn't mean you should tip 20%. This means you should pay a decent living minimum wage. Join the rest of the western world USA.
