NYC's Bold Vision: New Manhattan Expansion
Imagine New York City with an extra 1,760 acres at its southern tip. This is the bold vision of Rutgers professor Jason Barr, who aims to combat rising sea levels while providing 180,000 new homes for 247,000 people. The new land, called New Mannahatta, harks back to the island's original indigenous name.

Thousands of miles of old broken down apartments all over nyc outside Manhattan that could easily fix the housing shortage
@jlschump
@jlschump Месяц назад
exactly, not one of the new buildings will be for "affordable housing" it will all be top dollar upper class housing.
@kryan1234567890
@kryan1234567890 Месяц назад
You say easily, bro that’s a lot of time, money, and coordination. There’s a reason those buildings are empty; many of them aren’t up to local code to be considered a safe dwelling (I’m an NYC construction worker for perspective).

@@kryan1234567890and…. Filling in landfill to expand the entire island with enough density to support more skyscrapers is…. Easier? Cheaper? Tear down the old buildings not up to code and build new ones.
@Teutathis

@@kryan1234567890Not an NYC contractor, but have worked in the construction sector in Europe, and this is one hundred percent accurate. Sometimes renovating old buildings aren't possible and needs to be knocked down partially or entirely. There's a reason why we stopped building using certain substances and techniques, and gutting a house filled with cancerous substances is not a cheap process. Especially not when the stuff needs to be disposed of in an responsible manner as well. Maybe it could be considered profitable if done at scale because It's New York after all, but don't expect the end product to be cheap.

why not buiilding a some kind of Delta Works to protect NYC? Like we did in the Netherlands. It's more effective and saves a lot of money on maintenance for the NYC coastlines and waterfronts. Expanding Manhattan, still brings the risk, that it will be flooded by rising sealevels. Because the other places are still vulnerable for floodings

There already is a train. It takes you to Jamaica LIRR and subway connections where you have the choice to go to Manhattan or anywhere outside the city. In addition, most of the terminals at JFK are of recent build, so no...JFK is not dreadful or embarrassing. You are being a snob.

@@newyorkernewjersey I've been to CDG, FRA, LHR, MAD, BCN, FCO, ATH, CAI, NRT, HKG, SYD, and some more. Don't lecture me that JFK is a shithole when AMS has druggies in the airport train station pooping on the tracks, CDG is an overly complex layout that is inconvenient, CAI is a claustrophobes nightmare. @diIbert

We could spend trillions modernizing old cities. Those projects alone would be an economic engine for the US. But. We don't have a Congress that gives a poop about the US.
@kvm1992
@kvm1992 Месяц назад
Nonsense. Insanity is the definition of doing the same things over and over again while expecting different results. There is no fixing of anything and the cost to do so would be in the trillions. If it has to be fixed then that means it was built with terrible planning. There's only the tearing down of such cities and making way for new ones. Newer cities are less expensive than fixing old ones problems and the time for old cities to be fully repaired would take more than a lifetime.

2:00 Ummmm question: if you create this land to help create more housing, wouldn’t that endure more activity to a point where more people will come and you will still have a lack of housing? 3:20 even the evidence you use to create more land still has us at a point where we still need more housing. It just endures more demand especially if you have an open boarder allowing people to enter without hinderance to come in.

it makes very good economic sense to expand one of the most in-demand real estate areas in the world. It wouldn't make so much sense to have migrants and other poor folks live there. The middle class will gladly pay for short commute distances. Better to make public transport better for the outskirts.

This does nothing for the rest of NYC. Only about 12% of the population lives in Manhattan, the rest lives in the outer boroughs which are much more threatened by climate change like Brighton Beach, Flushings, and LaGuardia. You could do so much more for the city by restoring wetlands and aquatic ecosystems, building up in areas of Brooklyn and Queens with limited subway connections, and decarbonizing NYC's power grid. The fact this video defends gentrification which is killing many of NYC's authentic cultures and is driving out much of the city's population is a red flag.
