Someone once said, "when Helmut gives you just a few races to save your seat, you're already gone." Or words to that effect. Basically I think Nyck is done. I reckon he's probably going to be moved to the factory or he'll go racing elsewhere. Either way, I think it's done for him. I kinda feel for him and kinda don't. He's not a rookie, as he himself liked to say. I think racing is like boxing. In boxing there's a term "styles make fights" some fighting styles work for some fights, not so much others and if you don't have the adaptability to overcome that, you'll come up short. I don't think Dani lost all of his skill, I just don't think he could adapt to McLaren, I think similar is happening with Nyck, unfortunate but it is what it is, maybe Lawson or Iwasa will be able to do a better job, time will tell.

I also don’t think Helmut was out of line at all. As a 20 year Army veteran, I understand the utility of negative reinforcement…it’s not always a bad thing, especially when constant hand holding and ‘affirming’ (ie positive reinforcement) isn’t working. I hope we will see Liam Lawson in F1 car next season. Regarding his F2 time you could come to the idea that there were supernatural forces that just didn’t want him to win title. The amount of bad luck he had, technical failures, collisions he didn’t cause etc. And let’s not forget him winning DTM title, they robbed him of. This made the Abu Dhabi controversy look comparatively harmless. I can’t imagine RedBull throwing their junior concept overboard, choosing Ricciardo, who himself always says he wants a winning car

There's no reason to expect Lawson to outperform De Vries at this point. De Vries is an older, more experienced driver who's proven himself with more trophies in more different cars than Lawson has. Given a real shot Nyck would be a better driver than Yuki by season 2. It´s hilarious to see everyone fail to understand this so badly. Tsunoda is properly bad but they let him crash because he is Japanese. This is the only difference. Tsunoda can hunt those thousands of a second while crashing the car. i expected that, but yuki really gave his best this season, and frankly nyck seemed before this season to be at least on the level of haas drivers, someone who maybe won't be on the level of the top6 teams, or albon, but a guy who could be at least on par with kmag, hulk, or yuki. this year showed that tsunoda is actually pretty good, and nyck can't deal with the pressure. Maybe if he've gotten into f1 as a teammate of russel in 2019, when he was after good f2 season, and everyone treated him as a rookie, he would be up there now as a solid mid table driver, but it didn't happen, he was chosen as an experienced driver, by a team that wanted immediate results, and when he couldn't deliver he was just crushed by the pressure, realisation of own disability, and lack of mazepin/latifi/mick on the track who would at least partially take some media attacks. This year's drivers were just too good, and when even young logan isn't spinning around like a mad man, there is no one for nyck to hide behind

@@superkubus-nk8lbif you didn’t judge a driver’s skill by their charisma and by their actual pace, you would understand Yuki was legit from race 1. He’s obviously no Verstappen and had many flaws, but there is no denying his raw race pace was there from day 1. Yuki had only one season in F3 and one season in F2 before going straight into F1 where he had multiple point finishes as high as P4. A common comparison is Zhou and Tsunoda. Yuki performed much better than Zhou in their first seasons, but nobody seems to realize this largely because Zhou is a likeable guy while Yuki was/is incredibly immature and hotheaded.

@@williamcurtin1036 it isn't that i don't think yuki is fast, he is just very inconsistent, and he made a good performance jump this year. Logic behind backing nyck was that he seemed to be a safe , and consistent option, yuki would beat him on his day, but nyck was supposed to edge him just by making less mistakes, and gathering safe points throughout the season. And this didn't happen, despite great amount of experience in all kinds of different cars

To be fair, Tsunoda is probably one of the least impressive drivers on the current F1 grid. De Vries has to beat him handsomely if he wants to have a future in F1. After all, Red Bull are only interested in a new Verstappen. So far, De Vries has been beaten handsomely by Tsunoda, which suggests he is not good enough. Maybe if he gets more time he will be able to match Tsunoda, but I think that's about his ceiling. I'd say at the moment the drivers are letting Alpha Tauri down, not so much the car.

Nyck is a nice guy and i really like that he's finally in F1 but his debut really overhyped him as a driver. Maybe the Williams or Monza suited him better then the Alpha Tauri so far this season. Yes it's a dog but Yuki is running away with the team so far. It reminds me of Schumacher last yr. I liked him. I was sad he left and hope he returns. But the difference here is i won't care if Nyck doesn't come back. Also the ' Ricciardo returning if Nyck get dropped ' isnt helping his cause. Silverstone is the make or break for Riccardo due to the testing. I think Lawson is a more liable option as he's younger but Ricciardo is Ricciardo. Fast, very experienced and always similing which is something the team rlly needs right now. I just hope Nyck has succes in wotever motorsport he goes on to race in and the remaining seat to go to Ricciardo for the remaining races and if he does a good job he can stay next yr and if he doesn't Lawson gets it next yr and see how that goes. Great vid.

a) Mick at least had race pace to show. Besides his 2 big shunts, he beat KMag in races they finished, and the kid can actually drive. Yeah he has mediocre quali pace, but it was his first actual competitive season since the 2021 Haas was just a joke car and he dominated Mazepin who was not a good measure of Mick's skill. The team also fucked both drivers out of points many times (Zandvoort for example) and the car wasn't developed so it fell off a cliff on performance at the second half. He was just a rookie in a terrible environment that doesn't favor young driver development. b) Why would they take Ricciardo? They already have Lawson who's been showing great things at Super Formula, and Iwasa who's doing good at F2. AT/Toro Rosso is a team for driver development, and Ricciardo doesn't fit that. NDV got hired because he's a stop gap for their other talents who are/were too raw, and let's not pretend like these past 2 years haven't shown us that Ricciardo right now isn't dependable. The last thing he needs is to be beat by Yuki. That would end his career.

The biggest "problem" with the red bull approach is that it is designed to generate driver turnover. Gasly wrote an article for The Players' Tribune and described how a crash in testing was enough to make it feel like the team turned on him. And even when he won at monza, he knew RB would never take him back and was reminded of that constantly. If anything, they wanted him gone so they could put the next potential max verstappen in the seat. Nyck can't save his seat. He's done at AT. He might see out the year, but at this point the team has already turned their back on him. Any more races are just time spent making a decision.

It led Ricciardo and Vettel to their career highs, you just have to be one step above the rest to get that treatment. Redbull is looking for the absolute best drivers, this is a damn good way to find them. The ones that are adaptable enough to be fast right from the start are really what they’re looking for. They aren’t looking for decent drivers, they’re looking for the next Vettel, Verstappen, Hamilton, or Alonso, if they aren’t champion worthy, they’re worthless in the Redbull model.
@themanwithsauce
@themanwithsauce Год назад
@@Besitzerstolz Eh.....It's effective at finding one driver, but as RB themselves will admit, they run into issues trying to keep drivers after a certain point. And given that LeClerc, Hamilton, Norris, and more didn't have to go through the RB meat grinder to be identified as franchise drivers suggests it isn't the "one and only" way, just one way of doing things. It's why they're looking into ways to sell off/deal with AT. I think it's what they need to do at this point - they've been able to seed the junior categories and even F1 itself with enough quality drivers they don't need AT to be a holding pen that looks empty when they don't have their own juniors in it. Having two non-RB drivers in the 4-driver lineup is kinda telling that there are some issues in the pipeline they currently have.

This is Nyck getting a taste of the RB academy philosophy. RB is extreme in everything they do and thus their junior academy is set up that way. They apply extreme amounts of pressure to their juniors just to see who makes the cut. After all, RB is a top team (even when they go through lesser times) and to be at the top in F1 you need to be able to withstand extreme pressure. With Max it clearly worked and if there is a junior that shows a similar promise to Max', they will probably cut it and become champion with RB at some point in time or at least win races. The reasoning makes sense, but it just doesn't work for everyone. It seems Nyck is part of that group.

Marko is saying that because they need a spot for Danny Ric. And they need a spot for Danny Ric, because the Verstappens want him besides Max. So if Danny Ric can outperform Tsunoda that path is open. Then Max has the ideal teammate, and someone who keeps it light and fun. The last thing RB wants is Max leaving F1 early, because it's no longer fun to him.

The thing about that is red bull has out engineered everyone else so well that the only way to give Max a challenge would be to have everyone else catch up or to put a driver next to him that will beat Max if he isn't trying. I don't know who that could be either lol Leclerc maybe, but Hamilton and Alonso (probably) won't be in F1 too much longer for them to get the benefit of max staying if they did happen to get one of them next to Max

Nyck is already a dead man walking, it's so evident since. A. Christian Horner & Franz Tost didn't want Nyck de Vries in the first place. B. There are multiple Red Bull juniors like Lawson and Iwasa impressing. C. He only beat Yuki twice on race H2H, and that's because Yuki had break failure in Monaco, and a horrible race in Austria. D. His consistent crashing like his 3 crashes in Baku, including one where he crashed into Tsunoda. And his horrible wheel to wheel combat when he crashed with Norris and Magnussen twice. E. He is freaking 28. He is older than Verstappen, Leclerc, Ocon, Russell, Albon, and even Latifi. He's not some young rookie like Logan Sargeant who's mistakes are more forgiveable, he should be the established product. Even if Nyck doesn't get fired after Belgium, he's gonna get fired after Abu Dhabi. He has no future in RBR, so there's no incentive to keep him.

As a NZer, the biggest concern about Lawson is definitely his qualifying pace. He's not that great in quali, and if he comes second in Super Formula, it will because he didn't get enough points from quali (I know its weird but SF gives out points for the top 3 in qualifying). However, his race pace and tyre management is probably the best among all the Red Bull juniors, even probably Yuki. He's definitely been the fastest driver in Super Formula this season and the only races he didn't finish in the podiums were not his fault. (bad strategy and bad safety car timings) Funnily enough being average at qualifying worked in his favour in F2, because he would qualify 4-10th usually, be flipped near the front of the grid in the sprints and pick up podiums (when typical F2 shenanigans didn't ruin his race), and having the race pace in the feature races to also pick up podiums. (Although he's weirdly good at Monaco qualifying).

This could be either a good plan or a horriblely bad one, give Danny Ric the seat and FP1 outings (including the Silverstone tyre tet in the RB19) and time in the sim to get up to speed on the RB car and stick him in the AT for the rest of the season and if Lawson keeps perfomring like he is in Super Formula, give him the seat for AT in '24 and Danny Ric a RB drive for '24. It makes sense to me for both parties involved since RB know how to set up a car for Danny Ric and it gives Lawson the much needed time in F1 to show if he can transfer his talent into F1 and score points on the regular consistently and just be Alonso basically because that AT next season probably won't be any better than it is right now

I am a die-hard Lewis and Mercedes fan, but the odd thing about Red Bull is how different it has become these last few years relative to its glory days with Seb. For instance, during Seb's WC winning years Mark Webber clearly underperformed Seb in three of those campaigns (especially in 2013), and yet his seat never in jeopardy in the same way as Gasly, Albon or even Sergio today. This may be just a mere coincidence, but it definitely seems that since 2016, Red Bull drivers cannot afford to have a bad patch. My guess is that when Red Bull found out it had stuck gold when they did it the first time with Kvyat (replacing him with Max), they believed they could easily repeat the same procedure over and over until they find another top driver to partner Max. However, and putting myself on a Red Bull driver's shoes, I can only imagine the crushing pressure it must be to partner Max (who basically buries every buries every teammate 10 feet under) and knowing that Red Bull's top brass hovers a Damocles's sword over your head. No wonder Max is given 100% priority and the other seat has been swapped around so often. I just hope Sergio finds his feet and avoids the hammer. He is a good driver overall (a few notches below Max, sure), very likable and I will never forget the fact that he chipped in when Force India went into administration back in 2018 to save many of the team's staff from unemployment.

Why would Danny Ric want to go to AT, straight to the back of the grid (he's not going to get much better results than Yuki in that car)? Especially since his departure from the equally abysmal - for his driving style particularly - McLaren virtually wrecked his career, if only in his head. He _needs_ to be in a better car straight away or else his career really is over. So basically I can't see why he'd want to replace Nyck in the AT for the second half of the season. That car isn't going to get much better by then. Frankly, I can't see that car doing _anyone's_ career any good. Yuki is having a lot of bad luck (though Austria saw the return of his hot head, sadly), but because he's got so much experience in that car, he's the only person in a position to get the most out of it. Bringing in a rookie - even more of a rookie than Nyck - (or pretty much anyone on the grid!) would be as good for him as Haas was in the rookie year of Mick Schumacher and... whatever his name was ;). In other words, disastrous!

There isn't a lie in his statement, NDV really isn't doing what he needs to be doing and Horner was right to not want him in the team. Im a believer of the first year being a wash for every rookie, but man NDV is really making it hard to actually want to keep him on for another year. honestly, between LS and NDV, i think Williams is also better off with LS and not picking up NDV was a bullet dodged financially.

Seeing them so high up in qualifying in mixed conditions like last weekend in Austria, that is an obvious sign that the car isn't as bad as it looks. There are advantages for AT and Red Bull to have an experienced driver like Daniel at the wheel for proper feedback and a good direction for the development of next years car. If anything, Id say that they should move places with Ricciardo, have Nyck fulfil a Third Driver role with Red Bull and have the second car of AT being used by both De Vries and Ricciardo, ultimately giving the seat to whomever performs better. That being said, I do think that Nyck deserves more time. Pulling a Rookie completely out of F1 in his first handful of races is not a good look. Especially when the team is due for a complete and total overhaul next year. Also, Lawson isnt ready as far as Im concerned. Putting him in there now would be disasterous at the moment. If someone does step in for Nyck, I believe Lawson should also be used as a reserve driver and used for Practices and the like.
@rars0n
@rars0n 11 месяцев назад
The problem with Nyck goes beyond just his poor performance on track. He's 28 years old, he doesn't have the benefit of time or the potential upside of a young rookie. They don't have the luxury to give him a full year to figure out how to drive the car. That's why expectations for him are so high: he was given the seat to perform quickly, and he's just not doing that. The fact that the car is bad actually just exacerbates the problem, because he's clearly not helping all that much from a car development perspective. That's why replacing him with Ricciardo is a no-brainer. Alpha Tauri needed to make a change now, before it was too late, in order to best prepare for next season. Additionally, Ricciardo is more of a known veteran talent, which means that while the car is still so bad, they can better evaluate Yuki's performance by comparing him to what Daniel can do with the car. I suspect, especially since the driver change was made, that Daniel was their choice all along, but they couldn't talk him into taking the seat at the beginning of the season. More than likely, Red Bull will use the rest of this season to evaluate both Ricciardo and Tsunoda, and if Checo continues to underperform, one of those two could potentially get his seat next year. Edit: I absolutely agree with you that he should have stayed at Williams. There would have been far less pressure there, even with Albon performing well.

De Vries only earned a place in F1 with his drive at Williams. He did because it seemed he could just turn up and deliver; but this year he's shown he can't. He's already failed to deliver on the reason that Red Bull chose to put him in that Alpha Tauri over their own juniors. That's always going to put him on shaky ground. Nice guy, but that gets you no points in F1. I think DR is the more sensible and likely replacement for him when he goes. RB clearly don't rate Lawson that highly or they'd have given him an F1 drive already. Put DR in that seat and they can take a view on whether to promote him to RB next year and replace the mediocre driving of Sergio. Lawson can then get a full season run next year, perhaps alongside Iwasa, and whichever of them is worst can get replaced by Zane Maloney the year after.
