Peaceful protests are supposed to be protected. However, we're pretty much a Police State now. And as the saying goes, when the Government's boot is on your neck, you won't care if it's a Left boot or a Right boot. Peaceful civil disobedience is supposed to get you arrested; the idea there is to clog up the police and courts with hundreds or thousands of arrests. Riots are not protected.
