Ogoshi and Uki Goshi are both throws commonly used in Judo, a Japanese martial art. While they might appear similar at first glance, there are distinct differences between the two techniques:
Execution:
Ogoshi (Major Hip Throw): In Ogoshi, the tori (the person executing the throw) wraps their arm around uke's (the person being thrown) waist, pulling them close. The tori then uses their hip to lift and throw uke over their hip.
Uki Goshi (Floating Hip Throw): Uki Goshi also involves wrapping the arm around the uke's waist, but the tori executes the throw by using a lifting motion with their hips, essentially projecting the uke upwards and over their hip.
Hip Placement:
Ogoshi: The tori's hip is positioned lower compared to Uki Goshi. This lower hip placement allows for a more direct lifting action.
Uki Goshi: The tori's hip is positioned higher compared to Ogoshi. This higher hip placement allows for a more lifting and projecting action, often resulting in the uke being thrown with more height and distance.
Impact:
Ogoshi: The primary focus of Ogoshi is to throw the uke over the hip in a more horizontal direction, with the emphasis on driving the uke directly downwards.
Uki Goshi: Uki Goshi involves more of a lifting and rotating action, resulting in the uke being thrown more diagonally or even somewhat upwards before landing.
Usage:
Ogoshi: Ogoshi is generally used when the tori has a stable, low stance and wants to execute a powerful, direct throw.
Uki Goshi: Uki Goshi is often employed when the tori wants to lift the uke and create more momentum and distance in the throw. It's particularly effective against opponents who are taller or heavier.
In summary, while both Ogoshi and Uki Goshi involve wrapping the arm around the opponent's waist and utilizing hip movement to execute the throw, the main differences lie in the positioning of the tori's hip, the trajectory of the throw, and the intended impact on the uke.

The uki goshi entry would also be a killer hanegoshi entry

I like how your videos are not simply “this is o goshi, bye”, but also not “this is o goshi and 1000 details for your next Olympics final match”. Hope I get my idea across that I enjoy the gross motor skills details. Now I hope I make clear my next question. So my sensei sometimes says that the technique entry has to have an impact (which should be a focus when practicing uchikomi). But for uchi mata or ippon seoi nage, the hip/shoulder impact will push my partner backwards making it more difficult to throw forwards, similar to how not to move in o goshi as you show here. Does it make sense what I’m saying about the impact thing? Could you make a video on that please? I feel it when my sensei does it and when other advanced partners do it, but it just doesn’t click with me. I’m also facing a language barrier in my club as I’m working abroad. Thank you and all the best!
