In this video, Mr Sean Chua, Chemistry Specialist of more than 20 years of teaching experience, highlights to his weekly Sec 3 GCE O-level Pure Chemistry lessons in Winners Education Centre, on the Difference between metals and non-metals
The main focus of this video is to compare the properties and characteristics of metals and non-metals in the periodic table. Note that metals are normally found in Groups 1, 2, and 3(and the transition metals in the gap between Groups 2 & 3) while non-metals are found in Groups 5-7. While Hydrogen is in the middle of the table, IT IS A NON-METAL!
Common differences include: Electrical Conductivity, Heat Conductivity, Melting/Boiling point, Appearance, and physical states at room temperature (Most metals are solids while non-metals are gases/volatile liquids/low melting point solids) *Volatile: Can be evaporated easily! Note that while metals are solids at room temperature, Mercury is an exception (it is a liquid at room temperature)
Unique characteristics of metals: Ductile(can be drawn into wires), Malleable(can be hammered into different shapes)
