I also the the old school look, I wanted a canvas tarp but the weight put me off, so I went for a tatonka tarp instead . I love my frost river pack, I also have the same Enfield oil rube which I love. Still loving your channel my friend, and the A to Z bushcraft.

Love your videos. I think your gear is the cat’s meow. You have given me a lot of ideas. I combined the old and new school ways of doing my bush craft. Just turned 62 so I try to keep weight down a bit as the back is not as strong as it was 10 years ago. I lost my best friend recently so my hikes are a bit lonely. My friend, Llewellyn setter named Justice would always love our hikes. Maybe some day I’ll get another dog. I have traveled all over the world but never visited Denmark. I see a trip in the future. Your videos are very informative and best of all relaxing. You have a way with your delivery talking some times and just being quite. Looking forward to your next video. Take care and thank you.

Thanks a lot my friend for your feedback and kind comment 😁 I really appreciate your support and hope you’ll find a new hike companion 🐶 soon

I'm 6'4" and purchased the 10'x10' oil skin tarp from tentsmiths. Best investment out of all my gear. I would also recommend you pay extra to have the reinforced center loop. I prefer the old school methods and skill set as well. I had to take a leap of faith and took all the modern gear out of my bushcraft kit. Removed the space blanket and air mattress and made a gum (rubber) blanket and removed my axe and saw and replaced with a tomahawk so i can make the handle in the woods if needed. I no longer carry soap and toothpaste because i can carry hardwood ash and charcoal. And the rabbit hole keeps on going lol. I enjoy your videos and will have to invest in the oil container you have. God bless!

Btw my pack weighs just under 50 pounds but for weighing 200 pounds, it still falls under the quarter of your weight rule. And everything is bomb proof and can be used for long-term survival for my entire family if needed; including food procurement. If your interested in my gear list I can send it to you.
@cimbrerbushcraft-vikingheritag
Thanks Ryan for sharing your experience with and for your support … It sounds great the gear you have put together 👍🏻 I’ll check out the oil skin tarp you have purchased 😎🌤

Hello Cimbrer, I like your stylee. I lit my first fire Saturday using flint and steel striker together with char cloth. I was well happy 😂😂. Didn't want to give it back. I was playing with it for hours. Thank you for your clips. This series is awesome. Keep it up. Hope you master the bow drill. And you will 👍🏻. Take care out there its a jungle. Well done on the subs. You deserve a tonnage more 👌🏻

Old School is a subject that I've been fascinated by for many years; originating from my friendship with my maternal grandfather (1906-2000). His father (1886-1959) was a carpenter and my grandfather was an engineer and I inherited their tools and their love of tools. My grandfather told me a couple of interesting things: old tools were at one time 'state of the art' and innovative. when a new way of doing something becomes the 'correct' way, the old way is very soon forgotten and lost - tools and methods become old-fashioned, but a resourceful and creative person should have a long memory.

Your comments about the weight penalty of 'old school' are honest. I purchased a custom historical reproduction tent crafted of waxed canvas. When dry, it was too heavy to carry on my back. If wet and I touched a panel, a leak formed immediately. With the tent closed up, it was stuffy inside, like the trucking tarps my family used...and we used for backyard camping as children. My camping (as opposed to trekking) has been done a few feet from a vehicle. I could take 'old school' items made of leather and cast iron cookpots and dining china and pottery coffee mugs. Today, my equipment includes hand-carved wooden items like my homemade Kuksa, bowl, red cedar spatula, various spoons... I COULD take a Viking-style brazier but a Solo stove is more efficient in that it provides for secondary combustion of gasses. I DO use sheet steel and cast iron cookware but in single-person or two-person sizes. That saves some weight and leaves me with the 'right' old-school feeling.

Great video Tom, as you know you and I both agree that ol school is the way to go for older guys like ourselves. We must keep the old ways alive and pass them along to the young Bushcrafters everywhere. I hope all is well with you and your family my friend. Give Cornelius a big hug for me. All is well here in Alabama but very wet right now, it has been raining for 3 days. I did manage to get a fire going this morning with a bow drill set that I made but it took some doing to get it done. ATB, Keith Alabama Bushcrafters

I have always preferred buttons or toggles over zippers and Velcro/hook and loop. They are quiet, tactile, and easy to repair. That was the mindset instilled upon us in the Marine Corps, and I still agree with it. It's sadly difficult to find new clothing and gear without zippers or Velcro these days. I also like buttons because on shirts they can be partially undone for more ventilation while remaining secure. They're also lighter than zipper tracks and not as prone to malfunctioning. The loop side of Velcro wears out over time in my experience and the hook side can grab onto other soft materials and damage them. Did I mention how loud it is? 😅 I've been meaning to learn how to remove zipper tracks to replace them with buttons. I especially don't like them on my pants flies. Great video topic!

HEY TOM . I LEARNED ABOUT PNW FROM YOUR CHANNEL AND NOW HAVE SEVERAL OF THEIR ITEMS , INCLUDING THE GOUND CLOTH AND ITS DESIGN IS VERY DIVERSE AND USE IT EVERYTIME IM OUT SO THANK YOU FOR THAT . ALOT OF OUR GEAR IS SIMILAR FROM THE FROST RIVER RUCK SACK , WHICH I CHOSE TO GET THE FULL SIZE , AS WELL AS THE SOLO STOVE , WHICH I FIND TO BE THE BEST OUT THERE . I AM ITALIAN AMERICAN AND HAVE JUST GOT MORE INTO BUSHCRAFT STYLE CAMPING AND I GET ALOT OF GOOD KNOWLEDGE FROM YOUR CHANNEL ..I AS WELL ENJOY THE OLD SCHOOL STYLE , FROM THE GEAR DOWN TO USING WHAT I CAN FROM NATURE .....FOUND IT FUNNY WHEN YOU MENTIONED USING JUTE TWINE AS STARTER/BIRDS NEST . ALL THESE PEOPLE MAKING ALL THESE VASELINE COATED THIS AND FIRE STARTER THAT LOL PAYING ALL KIND OF MONEY ON KITS ONLINE , IVE BEEN USING JUTE TWIN FOR A LONG TIME NOW AND IS MY GO TO FIRE STARTER IF NOTHING ELSE IS AVAILABLE , WORKS EVERYTIME WITHOUT FAIL . MY FIRE KIT CONSISTS OF JUTE TWINE , FAT WOOD STICKS/ SHAVINGS / CHIPS , AND OF COURSE MY FERRO RODS , THAT GETS ANY FIRE STARTED , AND FOR HARDWOOD IN MY BAG INCASE OF A WET DAY/NIGHT , I KEEP MY BROKEN DRUM STICKS IN THE SACK FOR MY SOLO STOVE JUST IN CASE LOL .

I have started using “Fixing Wax” to treat my carbon steel knives and tools in the woods. The mixture I use is 3 parts beeswax mixed with 2 parts mineral oil. So far it has worked great. You can also use it to treat cracked skin, chapped lips, and many other uses. I’ve even used it to wax cotton canvas.

For me, old school means, 1) not using modern materials, like goretex waterproof materials, titanium plates etc etc., sticking to oilcloth, wool blankets and similar. And 2) carrying the REAL basics, not the 'everything but the kitchen sink' that's it's easy to fall into. There is so much fabulous gear available today, lightweight and high performance, that you can put together gear for every occasion. I prefer the choices older equipment and materials make me take. Lovely video, very interesting.

just a suggestion if I may, as cool as the lee enfield oiler is, its heavy considering how much you are likely to use each trip, which is a tiny amount of oil. Remington, birchwood casey and napier, to name a few, sell gun and tool oil soaked wipes that can be opened carefully so after use the wipe cloth can be folded back up and placed back in the pouch for future use. these way as light as a feather and contain enough oil to entirely wipe approx. five rifles AND still be used as an instant fire lighter with a spark of a ferro rod. each pouch measures approx. 3"x2" and two are enough to take with you, one as an emergency firelighter and one as a wipe for all your tools.. people will complain about this so if going to use for food prep then just wipe off firmly and scrape off with something like birch bark before use for for food.
@cimbrerbushcraft-vikingheritag
Thanks Jamie for your feedback and suggestions 👍🏻 I’ve just looked those products up 😊 and can see how easy and light they are 👌🏻😉 Very good solution and easy to use One of the reasons I love my old oil canister is … it’s old school 😇 which I love very much … and prefer. But your suggestion is great and I want to thank you for sharing this with us. Hope you’ll have a wonderful weekend and coming holidays Atb to you and your family 🌲

Hi, i dont use often old school gear, but i love to know how i can make it or use it… Because modern gear can be damaged or broke… and then you can replace it with the simple old school one , if you know how its made. Most of the modern gears has his roots in old things. But the most modern user forget it. But some things i use, are still "old" pieces. For example: I found a little piece from a weapon cleaning kit on a flea market. ( I think WW2 or so…) It has two tubes in one piece and the covers of the tubes are fixed with a little chain. So i cant lose them. It was unused, like new. After cleaning and desinfection i use it now in my cooking kit for salt and pepper…gg … and it works very well for this!

I have the smaller Solo stove with the Solo alcohol stove as well. This has given me so many options, we too have "Fire Ban's" in some places I camp due to very dry conditions. I also have a good Waxed Canvas Tarp that is very heavy for me now that I am old but I use it when I go out on my ATV to camp and can then carry it easier. I carry more gear obviously when I use the ATV but my Frost River Summit Expedition Canvas Pack Carry's my DD 3m x 3m Tarp works just fine. Love the beautiful countryside in your videos. can you share a link for the P and W Bushcraft. Would Like to visit their website.

I would love to own a canvas tarp … can’t seem to find one here in Europe 🤔😏 The company name is PNW Bushcraft and you can visit their website and buy their stuff here: www.etsy.com/search?ref=auto1&as_prefix=pnw+bu&q=pnw+bushcraft&order=most_relevant&view_type=gallery I can recommend all their items 👍🏻 but the waxed canvas ground cloth is amazing and very versatile Thanks for your support 🌤

Hello my friend .I am very old school myself {maybe an age thing} but I also get a great deal of satisfaction from making as much of my gear as possible. I have watched several videos on both waxing and using boiled linseed oil on canvas so I purchased some canvas to give it a try. Also in " Nessmucks" "Woodcraft And Camping " book he talks of making a shelter of canvas or as he puts it "stout drilling" and soaking it in a mixture of lime water and alum to weatherproof it Im addicted to d i y so I must try this.. Take care my friend. ATB from Canada
@cimbrerbushcraft-vikingheritag
That’s sounds awesome 👍🏻🤗 I think I’ll go for the waxed canvas instead of oiled … because the oilcloth seems to be a little bit heavier 😊 … but I don’t know it exactly. Do you have some experience about that issue? 😊🐶

once again... make sure the brush can withstand the heat of the wax.Spread it evenly and lat dry in open air. I then took a soft brush and worked the material gently to re soften the canvas. Its a very easy project. Im sure there are more videos on this topic.This is my only, simple experience. It turned out quite good. I have been using it for about 3 years and it could easily be re treated if necessary.

Very nice. Old school looks so nice and often times it is time tested and works great. Some things, of course are better and lighter now, but not everything old school has or should be replaced. Great video and congrats on reaching 5k subscribers, I am sure you will get many more. -Matej

Your videos are always so relaxing to watch. What spirits do you add to your cowboy coffee? Whiskey? Do you have an old standby that you use, or do you like to switch things up regularly?

I am too old and physically challenged for old school, but enjoy watching you practice it. Here's a hint for what many call "cowboy coffee"...just dumping loose coffee into the pot and boiling it like you did. An outfitter's cook showed me this trick..it works. Before drinking, scatter drops of cold water...just a small amount, into the pot. It will cause the coffee grounds to sink to the bottom in just a minute or less. What alcohol spirits did you add ? I'm a bit partial to Bailey's Irish Cream.
@cimbrerbushcraft-vikingheritag

Hi Tom as usual a great video I like you the old school and have just bought a Hudson bay tin and wish to give it the aged look could I ask you how you achieved it thanks
@cimbrerbushcraft-vikingheritag
Thanks for your feedback 👍🏻 How to add patina to brass Take a container that can be closed ore close it with plastic wrap. Come some vinegar in with a little bit of salt. Place the brass item in the container It mustn’t touch the vinegar … place it on some wood sticks and seal the container. Let it worked for some hours 3-5 h ( if you use a container made of clear plastic you can see the process) when it’s finished take it up and wash it in warm water with dish soap 👍🏻 Hope you’ll get a great result Let me know how it goes 🤗

Hello Tom, I hope your doing well, just wondering what size solo stove your using? I am considering buying one, from what can see they make a small one , that they say is good for 1-2 people and another one for 2-4 people, I love the idea that you can still have a little small contained fire in the solo if your somewhere you can not have a big wild fire. Also Tom if you please can you give a bit of information on your Lukas.
@cimbrerbushcraft-vikingheritag
Thank you so much for your feedback and question 👍🏻😉 It’s the Solo Stove Titan I have The one for 2-4 persons. I choose that because the burn chamber is bigger … and therefore I don’t have to feed it so often with twigs 👌🏻😊🔥 The last question about “Lucas” 🤔 hmmm I don’t know what you mean ? Atb to you my friend 🔥🌲🌤
