I love all the tunes of OP Ji. This particular song is one of my favorites. It's shocking to learn that the trophy was hurled out in disgust. I have heard in one of the interviews that this song is Ashaji's complaint in disguise about the harshness and oppressive possessiveness OP Ji used exercise over her. The lyrics narrates it ... "You don't let me enjoy my life nor do you allow me to swallow poison to end my life. What a wretched life I'm leading !" FACTS ARE STRANGER THAN FICTION. Be that as it may, we lost a Maestro of music and many melodious tunes.

Asha ji never acknowledged OP Nayyar contribution in her life which is very painful. OP Nayyar was like a Shakespeare's drama hero,who have all good qualities except one weakness. OPN behaviour/ego was his weakness. Personally I rate OPN a greatest music composer of 60 - 70 era.

I think O.P. was right in his behaviour. Very few know the real Ashaji. She couldn’t take sub position in a relationship.... if u look at her life she did everything for herself. OP was the unique Music Dirctoer who became successful without ever using Lata. Lata will be Lata & OP will be OP.

Naseemsahab narrated whole episode though heard repeatedly with a tinge of emotion n regret making it afresh. Woman causes success n failure. Earlier huge name in music world ruined by eldest one. what one can learn from these infamous anecdotes.OP, though led life on his own terms but the end result was horrible. His work shall keep him alive. I pray for his soul as an ardent fan.

The story I have heard is that Asha wanted to marry him, but he refused to divorce his family so she left him, but by then his family had got alienated, and left him houseless. You can't put the blame on Asha alone, he, his family and Asha are equally to blame. OP was known for his stubbornness, once he evicted Rafi Saheb because he came slightly late for a recording. In the end, what matters from a musical point of view is that the duo gave us numerous great hits.

I personally met OPN twice. What ever said in the name of OPN that his love was not only blind but deaf also is far from truth.He himself told me that Asha is number one singer .This meeting of mine with him was probably in 1988. He had utter respect for Lata jee also. If anybody has minimum knowledge of indian classical music,he may observe that Asha jee was superior to Geeta Dutt on the front of her classical singing abilities,though Geeta's voice and throw were little better than Asha. Plus there was on flaw with Geeta and Shamshad that their voice were special. For all round career in playback you must have a voice which is a general champion voice.Lata ,Asha ,and Rafi and to some extent Mahendra kapoor had this .While Kishor kumar ,Talat Mehmood ,Hemant kumaar, Manna dey had stylized voices and hence got limited songs as compared to those who had general type of voice. You can not expect a long career in playback if your voice is like Narendra Chanchal or Aziz Naza or Shailendra Singh. Even in case of stylized music directors like OPN,Naushad,Salil Choudhary,Madan Mohan this rule aplied.Those who were able to give over music composing like KA.LP,SJ,RD survived for a long time.

Very nice analysis of different voices but it is not hundred percent true that a special type of voice can not earn a long career. For example Mukesh had a special type of painful nasal voice but he had a great career with good no. of songs. Kishore Kumar also had a long successful career with special jingling throat

@@shankargupta4461 Why KK and Mukesh had long career ? two special reasons. First of all KK was not a mainstream singer upto 1969 ( Aradhana). The advent of Rajesh khanna and AB radically changed the image of a hero .KK was more suitable for the changed type of heroes. The influence of classical music on hindi film music began to diminish and it was a bonus to KK . Mukesh died in 1976. Had he been alive he would have gone in no demand situation since Angry young men were not supposed to be sadly singing song. Mukesh had a long career in terms of years but what about number of songs as compared to Rafi and Mahendra Kapoor ( the contemporaries of Mukesh) ? Mukesh was very little used by Naushad ,OP Nayyar and S D Burman as they felt his voice was not suitable for Dilip kumar, Deo anand and SHAMMI KAPOOR /JOY MUKHARJEE .

No one committed any crime....the First victim was OP Nayyar's wife, second victim was OP Nayyyar----------and real winner was Asha Ji......that man was a fool, who betrayed his wife for a second woman......as for as Asha is concerned she started loving OP Nayyar while she was married ----and went to RD Burman who was younger than OP Nayyar....it was OP Nayyar's karma

Asha told Nayyar that he should not work with any other female singers but her. Did you know it was Geeta Dutt who signed him to Aar Paar when he was getting no business and then he became famous overnight? His most memorable songs are with Geeta and Shamshad. It was wrong of OP to agree to Asha’s request, but also wrong of Asha to request that. She sang many more songs for Nayyar than Geeta and Shamshad. Geeta sang some 60 songs for Nayyar, and Shamshad around 30. Asha sang more than 300 songs for him - but comparatively fewer hits for the number. OP greatly regretted this later in life, his abandoning of Geeta and Shamshad in 1958. His music, overall, despite more output, suffered in quality. He said in the 50s he just composed from his heart, and these were his greatest hits. Geeta herself was also a very intuitive singer, and he did exceptionally well with the Guru Dutt banner. Geeta never told Nayyar to not give songs to Shamshad too, did she? Even in her husbands own films? Geeta never told Hemantda not to use Asha in Sahib Biwi Aur Gulam, did she? Character matters. One should not make such requests.

Asha Bhosle told Nayyar that he should not work with any other female singers but her in 1958. Did you know it was Geeta Dutt who signed him to Aar Paar when he was getting no business and then he became famous overnight? She told Guru Dutt that “OP Nayyar composes emotions, not music.” She thought very fondly of him - but she did not try to control him in any way. His most memorable songs are with Geeta and Shamshad. It was wrong of OP to agree to Asha’s request, but also wrong of Asha to request that. She sang many more songs for Nayyar than Geeta and Shamshad. Geeta sang some 60 songs for Nayyar, and Shamshad around 30. Asha sang more than 300 songs for him - but comparatively fewer hits for the number. Clearly Asha and him were involved with each other in some way. Both having been married, of course this was not appropriate, on both ends. OP greatly regretted this later in life, his abandoning of Geeta and Shamshad in 1958. His music, overall, despite more output, suffered in quality. He paid more effort towards sophistication in his later songs, instrumentation, and more complex compositions- but they began to lack his own flavor. He even had said later in life that in the 50s that he was just composing from his heart, and these were his greatest hits, but that after the film Naya Daur (1957), he began addressing his compositions differently. OP Nayyar had excellent musical intuition, and his compositions in the early and mid 50s were so well-loved because everyday people understood them and emotionally related to them at an instinctual, intuitive level. Nayyar was following his heart in these compositions, and therefore people resonated with these songs much more. They were relatable, enjoyable compositions. Geeta Dutt herself was also a very intuitive singer, and Nayyar did exceptionally well under the Guru Dutt banner. Geeta never told Nayyar to not give songs to Shamshad too, did she? Even in her husbands own films? Geeta never told Hemantda not to use Asha in Sahib Biwi Aur Gulam, did she? Character matters and shows. One should not make such selfish requests.

Ashaji betrayed OPji, when OPjis popularity started to diminish, she looked towards Pancham aka Rahul Dev Burman, who was becoming popular and in high demand, still I was read in the news papers that OPji became Secretary and manager of Ashaji whose popularity as singer with RD Burman was soaring new heights, once it was so happened Ashaji son made an allegation that Opji has swindled his mother's money by showing false books and accounts, he went to the extent of filing police complaint and it seems that has had Ashaji's tacit consent. Gradually, Opji started to distance from Ashaji as he was fully upset and disheartened. And that day also came that Pancham Da got married Ashaji. What a fate and ill luck, OP ji was ruined and has to destained himself as paying guest in Khandala, where he met his death. Opji's wife and family also did not understood Opji, they also turned to be betrayer. What a saga tragedy was OPjis old age life. I feel sorry even today when Opji breathed his last murmuring... Dil ki awaaz bhi sun mere fasane. Pe naja.... .

महान संगीतकार ओ. पी. नय्यरसाहब की दर्दभरी कहानी तो सुनी परंतु इसके बारे में मेरी राय कुछ अलग है. इसमें शक की कोई गुंजाइश नहीं कि नय्यरसाहब उच्च कोटी के संगीतकार रह चुके थे. वे खुद्दार भी थे. परंतु खुद्दारी का मतलब यह तो नहीं कि दूसरों को कम समझो. इस बात से कोई भी इन्कार नहीं कर सकता कि नय्यरजी के संगीत की बुनियाद थी मोहम्मद रफीसाब और आशाजी भोसले. केवल इन दोनों महान पार्श्वगायकों के बलबूते पर ही नय्यरजी चोटी के संगीतकार बन सके. परंतु यह बात उन्होंने अपनी जिंदगी में कभी खुले दिल से मानी ही नहीं. वे आखिर तक खुद को ही बडा समजते रहे. आशाजी का साथ छूटने के बाद उन्होंने कहा था कि मैं पुष्पा पागधरे को दूसरी आशा बनाऊंगा. क्या दूसरी आशा बनी ? और कभी बन सकेगी भी ? दूसरा वाकया. फिल्म 'बहारें फिर भी आएंगी' का गीत 'बदल जाए अगर माली' की रिकार्डिंग होने वाली थी और यह गीत रफीसाब गाने वाले थे. परंतु शंकर-जयकिशन के एक गीत की रिकार्डिंग की वजह से वे नय्यरजी के रिकार्डिंग के लिए देरी से पहुंचे. नय्यरजी ने उन्हे वापस जाने के लिए कहा. इतना बडा गायक बिना कुछ कहे वहां से चला गया. परंतु उसके बाद रफीसाब ने नय्यरजी के लिए एक भी गीत नहीं गाया. नतीजा : ओ. पी. नय्यर की बरबादी.

No doubt Ashaji is a great singer..,but O.P. nayyer has very intelligently used her melodious voice quality in his composition... Any musician has to teach the singer how the song has to be sung..many times the singer has to sing the song again and again to reach its perfection ...
