"O Sacred Head Surrounded" tune by German composer Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612) and text by St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1091-1153). Conducted by Stephen Schmall April 9, 2004.
A favorite hymn of Bill Kramlinger, who was a bass in the choir for 50 years.
This hymn is #28​ in the "Green Hymnal" (1966 Benziger Catholic Hymnal).

I love how you mention Bill Kramlinger, such a fine soul.!!! He did so much in the nitti gritti,to make the H C Schola Cantorum functional! Bless him, and he is most likely with the angels now. I am awaiting meeting him in paradise.

This is so interesting. Paul Simon attributed the melody to "Bridge Over Troubled Water" to Bach's adaptation of this melody in his St Matthew's Passion. But he didn't mention that Bach adapted it from Hans Leo Hassler's composition. Goes to show you that musicians have been borrowing from each other forever.

I think you mean Paul Simon's 'American Tune', not 'Bridge over Troubled Water'.

Hans Leo Hassler lived in the 16th century, not the 19th.
