From friends in the 90s to enemies in the noughties… what really went on between the Gallaghers and Robbie Williams?

It's sad that Robbie's father developed Parkinson's, but it was beautiful to see how Liam and Robbie became forgiving and respectful to each other because of that.

I’m the same. I’m a big fan of both. If I was on Desert Island Discs, they’d both at least be on my shortlist. But I’m a bit younger than them, from near where Oasis are from, so identified with them, and went to the same rehab that Robbie wrote ‘Angels’ (which Noel said he wished he’d written, remember). There are angels in the main entrance hall in the corners and some church people who came every week told me he spent a lot of time in there lying on the benches, as did I. There’s a pond with fish in too. Guess my taste is quite eclectic as I don’t mind a bit of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, too. Why close yourself off to beauty in this world, however it comes, and from who?

Like most of the feuds surrounding Oasis, it was media fuelled and media driven. But what Robbie did was play them at their own game for his own fame. Unfortunately for Oasis, just as they were turning on him he was ascending to a pop stardom, one that hasn’t been comparable in the Uk since imo. He really was huge for about three years or so. Angels probably got as much, if not more air play than Wonderwall during those peak years. Towards the mid 2000’s it just got a bit sad, seeing them pop up in celebrity gossip columns, or attending the Brit awards that had lost any edge that it might have had in the mid 90’s, and so no one cared. I think Liam has mellowed out more and that helps. But so does knowing that your rivalry antics won’t get the press it once did anymore
@lotuseater7247
@lotuseater7247 Год назад
@@abcxyz53 don’t think they made him suicidal, he was already like that from the get go. Oasis were close to becoming more of a nostalgia act. Yes they still had/have a large following, but their music by then wasn’t as relevant or interesting. I said the Brit awards had lost its edge. Even so, I think they have ‘outdone’ Robbie and Blur yeah.
@clark82

I would agree, his first two albums kind of slid under the radar (especially his first) and probably most his biggest hits are on those two (especially his first album, which often gets over looked), but there was probably a period from 1999-2002 after he had found his feet as a solo artist where a Robbie album was getting more hype in the build up to its release than a Oasis album was.... I think Noel probably took a shine to Robbie a lot more than he let on, but like a lot of these guys over the year, once that shine wore off, he was fast to throw them under the bus, and as usual, used Liam as his mouth piece (this is one thing I have noticed since the split.... it used to be Liam that would come out with the "controversial" comments, and Noel would sweep in and look like he was the level headed one.... but since the break up, Liam has completely mellowed, and Noel has become something of the "bitter" one)

You missed a key scene in the feud. After Robbie Williams sent a wreath to The Sun newspaper, reporters were waiting at the airport for Liam to land to get his reaction, since he had been out of the country at the time. It was here that Liam said he was going to batter Robbie Williams. It was this threat that then prompted Robbie's boxing match idea at the BRITS 2000. So, Robbie didn't just come out of nowhere with the idea of fighting Liam. 😊I looked for footage of the airport interview with Liam but couldn't find it, so maybe it never happened, though I do remember it fairly well (Mandela Effect?). For a band whose audience were aimed at teenage girls Take That weren't bad. Gary Barlow played piano and wrote their songs. And those songs had actual words. I'm not a fan of them but they were geniuses compared to the rubbish that's in the charts right now. Now it takes about 20 songwriters to come up with a load of crap with the same few words repeated over and over for three minutes.
@clark82
@clark82 10 месяцев назад
When take that split up, Robbie was not even the one that everyone thought would have a career...... most the media had made their mind up that Gary Barlow had the talent that he would get by, and Mark Owen was the one that everyone thought would be the dark horse who would go on to have the best solo career...yet both have hardly done anything as solo artists, and Robbie went from strength to strength. Also, Liam for his albums relies on a team of 4 or 5 song writers to help him (Liam relies very heavily on Greg Kurstin and Andrew Wyatt as his song writing partners)

@@startracker5895 I love Oasis a lot more than the Robster and their digs at him were pretty funny to me but yeah they got fed up of him hanging around so went indifferent then got jealous that he was becoming successful (probably more so with them having given him more credibility in the indie / Brit pop arena , contacts ie Owen Morris , Tim abbot, music reporters like Paul marthur etc ) as they were dimming a bit and massively laid into him publicly for his weight issues etc. On top of that Liam was now dating his ex that aborted his (Robbie’s) child. Liam instigated the fight before the Brit awards by saying that he would break Robbie’s nose following the wreath he sent to the sun. I would assume the reason Robbie said he wanted to shag Liam is because when asked why he doesn’t like him etc his only reason is for the Nicole thing and them berating him. Liam is seen as much more as an alpha male than Robbie who is aware that a lot of people think he is gay so it’s like people like Liam wanna mock me for being seemingly gay it’s more funny right now to not defend that but say I wanna have sex with him. Robbie always loved oasis and Liam and you can tell really he just wanted to be accepted by them again. If he was accepted by them he knows he would also be discredited less by the public / oasis fans who copied their insults , particularly the ‘fat dancer’ which has stuck for years. When Liam threatened to break his nose I think Robbie just thought well I know if I put you up for a televised fight I know you’ll publicly admit that that’s not gonna happen and if we do fight I’m gonna properly train and likely kick your arse. It’s also an opportunity to get in the papers and get lots of attention , which of course they did. I think they all had a love/ hate relationship with the press and that was him loving some attention whoring along the way.

Come on, Liam never ever turned the fight down, as such . If it was a street fight he would do it...He just didn't want anything to do with Robbie's showbiz media "fight " . Robbie is so rubbish, as a singer and songwriter...and he knows it He also doesn't seem to have the sense of self you need to be a true icon He had tried to be George Michael, Liam and Morrissey and none of them want anything to do with them. There is talk that Robbie has even tried to have plastic surgery to look like Morrissey... It didn't work, he still looks like Freddie Star. Pfft Robbie seems like a nice enough human, he doesn't seem like he is nasty in any way. His trouble is, he will never ever get the respect from actual artists. Because he isn't one...This is why he has not got any audience in the USA and nobody really knows, who he is. Its not even worth comparing them...As Robbie is like an Xfactor person, who does whatever it takes for money and fame and Oasis are not like that. You know Robbie never had the cultural impact Oasis had, he is not the type who will keep getting new hardcore fans every five years like Oasis or The Jam etc. Robbie is like the world's best reality TV star , who was very lucky he was in the right place at the right time. when culture went reality TV , Xfactor nuts. Noel didn't write Angels, of course, neither did Robbie, I expect that is part of the reason Noel said it . fair play to Robbie though, he made mint

James, please do a video on Williams stealing Angels from a starving Dublin musician whi wrote it and then played it for and recorded it with him about his girlfriend's miscarried baby. Bunged him 7k. It gave him a solo career. Denies it to this day, despite it being recorded with Heffernan and Williams in Dublin in 1996.

Take That was only popular in the UK (for me), only teenage female audience at the time, short relevance, & was mostly forgotten. Oasis was popular worldwide (and still is today), had impressive longevity (even after the broke up), & still a legendary band that's still listened by younger generations so they're still not forgotten. The numbers don't lie cuz WTSMG album still continues to sell like crazy on all physical formats & have massive streams on all streaming services.

Robbie Williams’ legacy vs Oasis’ legacy: Williams is now a footnote whereas Oasis are absolute legends. Williams is a total unknown in the U.S. whereas everyone in the U.S. knows Oasis and the Gallagher’s. It’s the difference between bullshit lightweight pop crap and rock n roll. Rock n roll wins over the long run every time.

If you have the opportunity of humiliating your bully in front of 300.000 people or more you'll do it too, all the time that you have a chance if that's what you need. Respect for Robbie Williams, this story is a lesson of karma and revenge, not about who's a better artist..

I think the first time I became aware of a fallout was when Liam and Noel got interviewed in the Christmas edition of NME dated 19 December 1998, when they were asked about "Record Guaranteed To Clear The House", to which Liam replied " I'm gonna be a right hard bastard now and say anything by fucking fat-arsed Robbie Williams, you can quote me on that!", to which Noel followed with "Tubby-arsed Williams".

Mad though it sounds now, I got on a smallish plane to Nice for a holiday in 1995 and as I walked down the central isle, to my left was a bleach-blond Robbie Williams and to my left was Paula Yates and a sunglasses-wearing Mick Hutchence. I was with my sister and a couple of friends and, being a smart-ass 24 year-old, I muttered as I passed them, "there's a lot of famous assholes on this plane. I hope we don't crash. We'd all be really sad in the cheap seats." And Robbie Williams laughed, which I thought was very cool (of him). I knew who he was, of course, but now I liked him. I saw Hutchence in the otherwise deserted Nice airport an hour later and he was off his tits. Never saw any of them again - why would I? Three years later I was bombing around Tuscany (in a Volvo - sweet ride ;) listening to "Millennium" by Robbie Williams - a lot. I wasn't so much his "fan", but a lifelong supporter. Still am. And that was a great holiday ;)

Look at the way the Appleton sisters behave around Robbie and look how they behave around Liam. Robbie is just a dominant male without even trying. The girls are leaning into him giggling, then look at Liam, you can see it in his eyes how angry and out of control he is/was. He’s just lost the frame completely. Liam shouts and screams to get attention, Rob just gets the attention. Don’t get me wrong I was and I am a massive oasis fan, but Liam for me, just behaves like a little child, and is a beta male. Cool as fuck though 😉
