Oakley, if you have trouble to break through a bottleneck position at a major settlement with multiple defensive layers -for example the african pikemen defending the second wall- you can actually move your siege ladders or towers inside the settlement and position them at the inner walls, as long as they're not blocked impassable terrain.
I hope THFE gets payed for the work he does. I literally throw on his channel as my source of TV. Going to bed, eating dinner, or just chilling on youtube, im watching this stuff.
Super late but I've been loving these videos. I dont even play the game but the second your ally broke Testudo formation and charged in, I knew that single decision just cost the entire battle. I'd have raged so hard lol.
A battle changing tactic I have found is when you have a sword or axe unit against pikemen, specifically what you would consider an impenetrable choke point you just have to throw bodies at, it is pretty easy to break through the pikemen lines and effectively their choke-point if you have your unit break formation once engaged. it's simple but most people don't think about it. hour guys will stop being so passive and just swarm through the pikes

If you like throwing javelins before a battle go try out the Ardiael marines. They are cheap so you can get a lot of them and they are awesome at flanking and not worrying about a counter cav charge due to the square formation they can do.
What's with the stepping when you raise and lower the altitude of the camera? Can't you just hold the key to raise or lower it smoothly? Either way, I like your massive battles videos! They're really quite well done.
Why didn't you bring your ballista forward? They would have made short work of those pikes that had been holding the center and you could have saved a lot of men by not having to charge through them.

I'm gonna call it now. Oakley due to using a charge faction in a city enviorment was slaughtered. His roman ally had to pull all the weight, but couldn't handle three defenders and lost. Wow, such a close battle, better then I expected. Sadly I think you lost due to your ally attacking on the right when he should have waited. He also had a really bad army for a roman, he should have ditched the cav and pretorians and just gone for the good old evocati...
Nice video, Oakley. I wonder, since the Roman legionaires don't seem to fare too well against those pikes, how did they beat them historically? I assume that Rome would have simply employed existing phalanx tactics unless they had superior techniques of their own.
+bonkoboy By the time the Romans faced the phalanx formation of Greeks/Macedonians they had mostly devolved into more simple tactics of simple formation-clashes (line of men vs. line of men), and not using skirmishers, cavalry & flank guards effectively. The Romans would outmaneuver the enemy, use missiles and flanking troops after binding the phalanx from the front. The Manipular (checkerboard-looking) formation was very good for maneuvering, replacing troops at the front with fresh troops as the battle raged on (while the phalanx troops would be more depleted) and exploting gaps in the enemy formation. They'd also use terrain to their advantage, disturbing the formation cohesion and opening up gaps in the enemy line. Once you get inside or on the flank of the Phalanx, it will fall. When Phyrros of Epirote faced the Romans, he used the mixed unit tactics which was far more effective. Proving very costly for the Romans to deal with.

So, despite the phalanx being such a dangerous formation to face head-on, the Romans may have still attacked them in the front (thus pinning them) while subsequently flanking them? Sounds dangerous but certainly possible. I suppose that's one way to take advantage of the big rectangular shields they had. Perhaps they were useful not simply for increased protection in a static shield-wall but also for pressing inside a phalanx, for getting close enough to use their own weapons? One of the only battle scenes of the HBO drama series "Rome" that I remember was depicting exactly the tactic you talk about, "replacing troops at the front". It was a very good scene.
bonkoboy Very good scene indeed. And yeah, holding down the phalanx from the front would be a bitch, but they'd try to only keep the enemy busy, not push through unless there's an opportune gap. Simply keep them in a bind while trying not to get shishkebab'd :P
I think your ally fucked it up when he took his praetorians out of testudo instead of camping by the arrow tower and letting it do the work before advancing, that's when that clusterfuck occurred on the right flank
Wow, unfortunate about the pikes. I feel like the defenders could've done way better though. They overextended after their counterattack and left little heavy infantry to defend the only point that mattered and why the heck did they stay out in the open when they had a solid choke point with two towers?!? Also, how can you not use those flaming ball?....Nice thinking Oakley to use them against the defenders.
The Roman player did a poor job. He keep sending in his infantry two at a time to their death. Moreover, he wasted a lot of his arrows and javelins on well protect troops. Seriously, Oakley you keep putting yourself in situation where it is very hard to win. You have even teams while attacking in sieges, but when you defend you let the attack have one or two more players with a lot of extra money. I don't even want to comment on the performance of half your allies.
+The roman legionary The phalanx is countered by missile troops, pushing gaps in formations (when there are multiple phalanx-units) or flanking them while they're occupied from a different direction.
+TheV1ctr I think he is just trying to find the best word for the situation, that best explains or describes what he wants to get across, but you could be right, idk I'm just thinking on both sides
