Former president Barack Obama responded to Republican presidential candidate Sen. Tim Scott's (R-SC) comments on the Republican Party's progress on race. #CNN #News
The fact that a former Democrat mayor and a current Republican congressman could sit in an interview and basically say the same thing about the same topic without resorting to name calling and arguing shows that peaceful discussions can be had between politicians with opposing views.
Kind to others? The guy bombed seven countries non stop for eight years. Women and children lived in fear during his two terms. I'm going make a bet you don't know who Zubair Rehman is.
perhaps you can explain your support for the party of corruption, slavery and treason? The only political party that's had 19 of its members expelled from Congress, 3 for corruption and 16 for treason. The party of the Klan. The party of Jim Crow laws. The party that unanimously voted against the 15th Amendment. The party of raging racists like Wallace, Johnson, Duke and Byrd. The party that now embraces communism but hides behind the socialist veil while attempting to change the laws that prevent them from coming out of the closet. (California Assembly Bill AB22 - 2017) While you're explaining yourself, perhaps you can find the missing evidence of a flip. Your party started a war that killed over 630,000 Americans, just to preserve their right to own other human beings. You have to be feeble-minded or morally corrupt to vote democrat. Which one are you?

A few years ago, the marketing director of a company I worked at was asked to visit one of our customers in a small town in Georgia. He made a comment about how he hated going there, because it always made him fear for his life. Someone asked him if the traffic was that bad, and he replied that it wasn't the traffic that scared him, it was being a black man driving a nice rental car through the backwoods of Georgia that scared him. So yeah, there's still a fair bit of work that needs to be done here in America. :(

@@devilsson6660 Except that area wasn't a "black neighborhood" -- it was a rural low-income predominantly white area and, much like your comment, very biased. Be better than that.
Everytime I hear Obama speak, I'm damn near in tears over the fact how far backwards we've gone when it comes to our political leadership and intelligence. His perfect bipartisan perspective on this subject is such a breath of fresh air and reminds me how much I miss him so dearly as our president.

I like how Fox News, Brian Kilmeade in particular, is now saying that Barack Obama’s words were unconscionable, when what Obama said had more facts than emotion attached.
First whatever you are calling facts are nothing but bull sh*t, Here is the real Obama And I very politely state that Obama has been full of sh*t and lies from the moment he started talking about being president this is a man that believed it would be okay to allow a baby that lived through an abortion to be wrapped in a blanket and allowed to starve to death in a closet. “When he was in the Illinois state Senate, Barack Obama voted to deny basic Constitutional protections for babies born alive from an abortion - not once, but four times. This man is way to evil to be allowed to speak to anyone else's character and if you support this position you are as well just as evil.
Obama is full of it. He did nothing for us but divide us. Now he talks of poverty and he was one of the ones that help us stay there. The cities with major poverty for the minorities are run by Democrats. When fathers leave the families it creates real problem with minorities and as a hold.
Just watch _The Boondocks._ Scott is Uncle Ruckus, Obama can be literally anyone else and theres what a conversation with Uncle Scott would look like 💁🏽♂
I agree. That was a great, concise 8-minute clip. Joe Pinion seems to be a reasonable Republican, and I like his 'look at causation' and don't just call everything systemic racism. Same with Mayor Bottoms who takes a thoughtful approach and doesn't just spew the angry, confrontational language we usually see on the left and right. And Obama's quotes were SPOT ON.

Obama was a terrible president. I liked the part after he killed jobs and then stated about Trump "I'd like to see how he will fix the jobs in this country." Then Trump did! Obama sucked so bad, he personally caused racial division, used government to attack political opponents, enabled Russia and attacked hard working business owners. Eff that guy!
Why should America be proud when hatred, racism and inequality is rampant? There is still 48% of America eager to see Trump in power or at a minimum don’t care if he is in power. That is almost 1 out of 2 people you see everyday.
I agree! After hearing his BS and seeing no action for 8 years, it makes me appreciate Trump, an actual leader who cares about this country and its citizens.
I loved him at the time. I've since thought he didn't do well in foreign relations: Syria, the first Ukraine invasion in 2014, and so on. He also was mostly honest but made one huge lie about Obamacare: "if you like your policy, you can keep it." He knew that wasn't true. He should have sold ACA saying: we're going to be giving 30M fellow citizens coverage, which isn't going to be free. Some costs will go up, but it's going to be worth it knowing our fellow citizens aren't dying of preventable deaths, suffering from curable diseases. And by having everyone insured, we're also going to be making things more efficient, so while it's going to cost, it's not going to cost anywhere near as much as you might think.

Simply say what you mean and not one person can say otherwise. Stop making excuses for when we’re wrong about something. The world in general is thinking about racism more than not because it’s the reality of the world. We have to work together in order for our country to be better period.

Racism is not the reality of the world. It’s the reality of countries a sizable amount of whites stay in. Wherever whites go, race and racial issues follow. Makes sense as they created the concept of race.
These ae serious issues, but I'd like to point out that Native Americans actually fare worse in terms of income, savings, overall poverty, access to education, access to food, housing, health, etc. For just about any metric used the Native Americans come out on the bottom rung. This is in no way to make light of the very real challenges that Black Americans face, but it always kind of bothers me when newscasters and others forget that there are racial and ethnic groups in the US that are systematically worse off, and by a lot. There needs to be more awareness of these issues across the board.

I'm a 74 year old, southern, white woman and, throughout my life, I have seen racism firsthand. We have made some progress, but there is still a long way to go.
I have a white mom and a black dad. And I have lived in a majority black neighborhood a couple times throughout my life growing up and I have lived in some gentrified/kind of majority White neighborhoods also growing up. I seen the best and worst of both worlds. I know all about privileges and how some people are treated different. I understand the complexity of things. I look white looking and was labeled black at Birth. And I know what it's like to be a mixed race woman. And I know racism still exists in this country. I have seen it 20/20 every time the cops rolled pasted or pulled my dad over with me in the car and how that makes him act nervous regardless If he did or didn't have a warrant or criminal charge on him at the time or not. I know some cops do have racist View's about black people or people like me. And I have said some extreme things online in other places here on RU-vid on another Channel about things I might do if Trump got back in the White House. And on that same day 30 minutes after I made that comment the cops rolled pasted my house like 3 or 5 times and heard helicopters flying around for a while too along with that cop to. And the next day when I stepped out front I found part of a women's hair weave on the ground right where that cop rolled through a suspicious amount of times the day before. I'm now living in a majority white area and the cops don't roll down this area very often like in a black neighborhood where every single day you hear sirens from ambulance or cop cars off in the distance or flying past your house every hour or so day and night because of constant criminal activities. And I noticed two suspicious looking people a man and woman who gave off Undercover cop or FBI kind of vibes in how they acted and carried themselves like serious authority figure kind of people and some what tryed to dress casual looking. And how they kept popping up where I work and other places while I was heading home. I know they followed me around a bit for a couple of days. Maybe I'm just overly paranoid and all of this is just a strange coincidence🤷♀️. But I'm very good at reading people and situations. But they totally gave off undercover cop or FBI vibes😎🕴. And their popping up in my life at the time with the comment I made many days before and I put it together in my mind that those people might think I'm a possible terrorist. If they were trying to discreetly follow me they kind of sucked at their job because they did not act casually when I did spot them.
3:10 It never once crossed my mind that the term "systemic racism" implied that America was "irredeemably racist". The only thing it implies to me is that these systems must be changed. And for anyone who has wondered how it was that America came to have a for-profit healthcare system, I had a "duh"-smack-the-forehead moment when I learned it was systemic racism, the perfect example of how it hurts everyone.
Yeah, good catch. He picked that word purposefully. The word implies no hope for change, whatsoever, which is the self-sustaining fuel for opposition laws like Florida's Stop Woke Act. No one said America is "irredeemably racist." However, IMO, America is willingly racist, because a lot of people benefit from it, at the detriment of others. And this cuts both ways -- The disadvantaged can game the system, too. I think, it is human nature for those who benefit to see no need to change and would be willing to fight to maintain those benefits, even if it requires the suffering of others. By making "them" nothing like "us," doing what is "necessary" become justifiable, while easing any misgivings. That is why the true teachings of Jesus are so counterintuitive: Putting the needs of others, before my own, doesn't help me be better than you. But the thing is -- It's not about me and my selfishness, and that is the part people don't get or refuse to let go of.
@@gregoryt1139 It's kind of tricky to "game a system" that you've been locked out of. In the case of healthcare, the racism extended to a heinous degree, and it's still there. Only one of multiple racist issues was the white-perpetuated myth that black people have a higher tolerance for pain than the oh so delicate whites. The opiod crisis is perhaps the one time the racism worked in favor of blacks. I wasn't trying to catch the guy on anything, and I don't feel he "purposefully" picked any word. I just don't know where he got that impression. The comments I've mostly seen about systemic racism are whites spinelessly trying to deny it exists. Systemic racism adversely affects everyone, and there is not one area or institution where it doesn't exist. The problem is that hordes of whites are wilfully ignorant, wilfully uneducated, wilfully blind, and therefore don't see how they are screwing themselves in the long run, and in the short run, as well. And they're often just flat out stupid. As for religion, all of them have some version of the Golden Rule. If people simply followed that, the only rule anyone ever needs, the world would be unrecognizable.

This discussion was productive. Decent. Respectful. I think people of various races and political affiliations can agree to that. But what's sad is the right-wing propaganda machine has made it so that Republican lawmakers across the country are fighting to ban these types of discussions from happening in the schools. How can the country get better if its future (the kids) can't have constructive and honest discussions about difficult topics?
You answered your own question. We must acknowledge that there are those on the right wing who want chaos and vitriol in place of civil, legitimate discourse. Why, you ask? What makes you think they want this country to change ***
America is not a racist country. It hasn't had a racist issue since the early 1970's. Since then everyone has the same basic opportunities to succeed. It's quite simple, yet so many won't adhere to the basics. 1. graduate high school. 2. get a job. 3. don't have kinds until you are married. If you do those 3 things you will not stay in poverty 99.8% of the time.
So whites do better than blacks must mean whites are racist as implied by the great Obama the first black POTUS. But If true why do Asians 7% do better than whites? What's the difference in the three races? Instead of asking all of those questions objectively, most people will avoid researching hard facts as it's just much easier to say that white people are just racist.
Well how nice for Tim Scott. He was blessed. But because he was blessed doesn't mean everyone is blessed like he was. I do think he was probably dropped on his head one too many times when he was a baby.😉

Racism happens everywhere. It is deeply rooted in slavery, trafficking, and colonialism. My heart goes out to all human beings who have to endure this, to this date, especially since give the status of migration, most big cities in this world are actually pretty "mixed". We should address discrimination as part of moral science education, blended with history, ethical leadership, and psychology, by teachers who are rooted across different communities🤍🙏💟
Disagree, Racism is deeply rooted in how some young folks are taught to hate others at a very y0oung age, generally from their Patents who have a love affair with Hate. It is their Ideology and they want it to continue. We have been trying to overcome racism in America for a very long time; it has institutional roots; teaching and education, leadership,..... all the things you mention have failed for many decades. "Moral Science Education" appears to be some made up terminology to make people feel better, it's a farce. Only People can change why they choose to Hate other people.
Remember democrats where the founders of slavery and the kkk. FYI all the statues that you democrats wanted remove all Dems. The Republican Party was founded by the slaves and the white farmers.

I agree you got both the republican and democrats views on race, inequality in a way it should be. We need to put this conversation out there and turn it up x100.
Not everyone know financial literacy so no matter what race if you don’t have the knowledge you will be struggling anyway. The family that keep and build their wealth use other vehicles to get there. The amount of money you keep is the important part
This was the most honest discussion on all the aspects of the disparities between the races. Joe Pinion really impressed me with his point of view. This is how we will move forward on this difficult sensitive topic. Honesty and taking personal responsibility.
Yeah, because white and black are the only two races America. I long for the day when the comparison is made between Asians and Whites. Why do Asians do better in EVERY ASPECT OF LIFE than any other race?
I was born and raised in Detroit. I can tell you that today in America you do have to be the exception to be young, black and successful. Numbers do not lie only politicians tend to lie. Pull up the numbers look at African-American men than women track how often they go to college, or track how often college graduates that are black get hired into positions, they deserve, or track financial aid that goes to minorities in America. Track any of these things and see what do the numbers say about race and higher education and success in America. If the numbers tell you race is not a factor proudly say it I can’t wait for that day but if that’s not what the numbers tell you don’t try and pretend something else is true. When you pull the numbers and simply look at the data, you see that race is a factor when it comes to success in America. It is difficult for someone of color to make it here. I say that to someone of color who has made it and I can honestly say it wasn’t difficult for me to do so, but I was the exception I wasn’t the norm. That’s like looking at a famous black celebrity and saying will see it’s possible to make lots of money as a black person in America. That is true it’s possible but it’s not probable and that’s the problem. There are endless possibilities in America but when it comes to the actual probability of something happening, that’s when you know whether we as a nation are doing good or bad. When it comes to race in America, we’re not doing so good. When you can run the numbers and see that Black people make less than Caucasian Americans we’re not doing good when you can run the numbers and see men make more than women on average for the same job. We are not doing so good. These are numbers that do not lie yet politicians continue to do so.
only ignorant understands ignorant regardless of their garbages and only their garbages could make them to understand their ignorances just like PUTIN since most ignorant people can't understand without given back 😊
I remember when the President and First Lady of the United States of America had racial slurs hurled at them DAILY. I wonder how Tim Scott managed to be so influential and admired that he is immune to that stuff. Do you think he is passing?
I was redlined in’89! Owned several properties free&clear, big $$ on deposit, decent credit, still couldn’t get a small loan! 5/3rd bank kept “losing” my applications.
We can all do better, perhaps recognizing what we have in common and then listening to those that have been oppressed would be a good start. Politics is not an honorable perfusion, they are only protecting their best interests.

One thing I know for sure, anyone can twist their mind into whatever kind of knot to fit their perspective and whatever their belief is which is both liberating and horrifying.
OR... Think whatever you want. Just do it critically and with genuine intellectual honesty. The 5 Steps to Critical Thinking: What is critical thinking? In general, critical thinking refers to actively questioning statements rather than blindly accepting them. Critical thinking results in radical free will. 1. The critical thinker is flexible yet maintains an attitude of healthy skepticism. Critical thinkers are open to new information, ideas, and claims. They genuinely consider alternative explanations and possibilities. However, this open-mindedness is tempered by a healthy sense of skepticism (Hyman, 2007). The critical thinker consistently asks, “What evidence supports this claim?” 2. The critical thinker scrutinizes the evidence before drawing conclusions. Critical thinkers strive to weigh all the available evidence before arriving at conclusions. In evaluating evidence, critical thinkers distinguish between empirical evidence versus opinions based on feelings or personal experience. 3. The critical thinker can assume other perspectives. Critical thinkers are not imprisoned by their own points of view. Nor are they limited in their capacity to imagine life experiences and perspectives that are fundamentally different from their own. Rather, the critical thinker strives to understand and evaluate issues from many different angles. 4. The critical thinker is aware of biases and assumptions. In evaluating evidence and ideas, critical thinkers strive to identify the biases and assumptions that are inherent in any argument (Riggio & Halpern, 2006). Critical thinkers also try to identify and minimize the influence of their own biases. 5. The critical thinker engages in reflective thinking. Critical thinkers avoid knee-jerk responses. Instead, critical thinkers are reflective. Most complex issues are unlikely to have a simple solution. Therefore, critical thinkers resist the temptation to sidestep complexity by boiling an issue down to an either/or, yes/no kind of proposition. Instead, the critical thinker expects and accepts complexity (Halpern, 2007). Critical thinking is not a single skill, but rather a set of attitudes and thinking skills. As is true with any set of skills, you can get better at these skills with practice. In a nut shell, critical thinking is the active process of minimizing preconceptions and biases while evaluating evidence, determining the conclusions that can be reasonably be drawn from evidence, and considering alternative explanations for research findings or other phenomena. CRITICAL THINKING QUESTIONS >Why might other people want to discourage you from critical thinking? >In what situations is it probably most difficult or challenging for you to exercise critical thinking skills? Why? > What can you do or say to encourage others to use critical thinking in evaluating questionable claims or assertions?

It is this attitude that keeps blacks down while other groups surpass them. There needs to be a change in perspective. Since the emergence of W.E.B. Dubois's leadership, blacks have taken a plaintive disposition toward America, while other groups maintained a self-assertive disposition. And when blacks have witnessed other blacks taking a self-assertive disposition, they have generally condemned them-- to continue begging America for breadcrumbs when by now they should be enjoying meat.

The big problem of course is which group gets the better chance to develop their exceptionality.
