Fun fact: This episode saved life od 33 years old woman form Poland. She gain 18 kg in 6 months and no doctor was able to diagnosed her (she had other symphtoms too) One day Małgorzata saw this episode and understood that she has Cushing. Sad thing is that she went to many doctors after that and no one belived her that she has Cushing (doctors in Poland hate when patient is diagnosing herself) Even specialist in Cushing dissese. Even specialist in Cushing dissese told her to eat less. Finally, she belived that she don't have Cushing and that she is fat because she eat too much. One day she went to the doctor prof. Grzegorz Zieliński and he diagnosed her with Cushing. Right after meeting with doctor she was scheduled operation. Now she is fine :) (sorry for my english, hope you understad the story)

My mom had Cushing’s disease. At her biggest she was around 400lbs. It’s shameful how many doctors wouldn’t listen to her when she told them there was something wrong. No amount of diet or exercise helped her lose weight. She had high blood pressure, loss of bone density, the classic hump on her upper back/neck, debilitating migraines, and mood swings. She fell into a deep depression when she was sick and I honestly don’t know how she did it. If we went out to eat people would look at her so disgusted. It took 2 surgeries to remove the entire tumor she had on her pituitary gland. She’s much better now but is on so many medications still.

There is a 90% chance of reoccurrence with this illness unfortunately so please make sure she gets her dexamethasone test done at least once a year, it will sadly have to be done every year for the rest of her life. And then when my doc finally believed me - after I demanded an mri or more invasive testing to prove where I was hurting mind you. He put me on a whole amount of different meds to find one that worked. Well. Side effect they didn’t warn me of? Swiss cheese mental capacity. And weight gain. And I mean weight. gain! To me, this episode proved that Chase was actually a good doctor. Initially I had my doubts about him, and I didn't always like him, but him mentioning "what if it's a symptom?" meant that he was willing to look past his own myopic view of childhood obesity to get the correct diagnosis. And he was right. House may not have ever been able to figure this one out if Chase hadn't pushed him in the right direction.

YE SHALL NOT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SYSTEM WHILE I STAND HERE, YOU DISGUSTING LOSER FREAK!!! Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go charge 1-3k to your insurance for the 8th time you’ve come here, because the 5 minutes I’ve spent mocking you for the 8th time is worth is.” I literally had a doctor walk in (I was freaking out because I had my period 3 times in a month’s span.) take one single look (you know where) and said aloud “Oh, you’re just fat.” And walked out. I didn’t see her the rest of the appointment. I was forbidden from taking any tests to see what may be the issue. It was the only time I ever had so many periods so quick, I may be sterile now, I don’t know and my mental state sucks so much I’m not going to go pay those freaks to confirm and then screw my mental state forever. That is only one of many incidents that have happened in my attempts to get help. So sorry, I don’t think kindly of doctors being stubborn and refusing to do any treatments because they think they can read your entire life by starring at your mid section. I think any who does so should be fired and blacklisted.

I wish more people treated obesity as a symptom more often. My dad's doctor almost killed him, because she was telling him all his issues were because he was fat. Turns out, he was fat because he was retaining 50 lbs of water in his body, which was because of his heart malfunctioning. And the heart was malfunctioning was due to her putting him on medication that could not be taken together. The mix of medication she put him on either caused, or exacerbated any preexisting heart conditions. The scene where House, Chase and Foreman do a last chance dianostic spitball between each other is probably one of my favorite moments in the entire show. They don't have time for the usual jokes, insults or games, they all just very clinically and professionally work off each other to find solutions and options. Even when House comes up with a crazy theory that the team finds 'impossible', they don't call him crazy or threaten to stop him, they just listen through his explanation and are willing to go with it after hearing his explanation. But, the mother did bring her child in to see the doctor, did she not? She did do what she could to help her daughter, did she not? Producing productive and essential care to one's child is a lot more nuanced and complicated then one simple youtube comment could even comprehend. Weight and health are a lot more complicated issues as well... Shaming someone for their weight will ultimately most likely not help them to feel motivated to live their healthiest or most fulfilling lives ... it will ultimately make them go into an extremely depressive and isolating state .... I love watching the gears turn in House's head. I work on production lines at my work, and as one of the senior guys, I'm often called over to help diagnose and fix problems with said lines. Whenever I get stumped by something that's not obvious, I go into House mode and get those gears moving. It becomes a challenge to solve the problem.

But they are right 99% of the time lol, real life is not like House; if I'm a smoker and show up to the hospital with lung cancer the doc is gonna tell me to stop smoking, who cares that it was actually caused by something else, he'd be right almost every time. And before you say smoking is a choice and obesity is not, I disagree they are pretty much the same degree of choice, yes it's harder for some people to eat less but so it is for some to quit, both have a strong genetic component.

@@Vacuon nah mate, my grandmother who'd never smoked a day in her life was diagnosed with asthma in her late fifties by her deadshit GP because why bother actually running any tests!? Turned out it was secondary lung cancer that had spread/developed after she'd had a hysterectomy because of ovarian cancer several years before, and proper follow ups weren't done. It spread to her brain eventually, and she spent the last 15yrs of her life in pain and misery then went to an early grave... why? Because most doctors are arrogant fuckwits.

40 years ago 3% of Americans were obese, today it's 40-60% depending on the state. It's not genetics. It's diet. We replaced fat with sugars, and we snack all day not letting our insulin level drop between meals causing insulin resistance.

I'm getting really tired of people preaching fat acceptance; I've been fat, it's not good. I was 170 pounds when I was nine and was able to stay at that weight for eight years before loosing ten pounds, I was not healthy at that age or weight. People need to realize the only ones who want fat acceptance are the people who are too lazy to lose weight and want others to be in the same situation so they can feel normal.

I really enjoy this younger House. He genuinely seems to care about the patient, as much as his puzzle, maybe even more than the puzzle. He genuinely doesn't want the girl to suffer or die, and that matters more than his personal enjoyment. House honestly lost sight of that as time went on. He didn't notice how much more he started to invest into the game more than the saving of lives.

I developed Cushings as a result of being prescribed a corticosteroid medication. I literally gained 230 pounds in less than 3 months. I've never had a weight issue, I was planning on running my third consecutive NYC marathon later that year, I've always been athletic. It was seriously mind blowing. The minute I weaned myself off of the steroid based medication, the weight gain stopped. Thank goodness I have a decent diet which allowed me to lose weight. But, it takes a good amount of time to lose over 200 pounds. I still have 50 pounds to go. But, the skin breaks from gaining so much weight so quickly will probably require plastic surgery.

Yes, they are. BMIs would both be considered unhealthy and kiddie chubster makes me feel ill. Every single Dresden Firelighter I've ever met has been a vicious lump with the personality of a manic depressive orc. The fact she's sick and that's the problem is lucky for her, and if it was me I'd test the mom for similar or thyroid misfunction. The reason why most people hate chubsters is interesting too - it's historical - comes from the fact that the rich used to be Jabbas because only they could afford to overeat (and you don't want to know *what* they were nomming) - and Dresdens are still associated with being lazy, indolent, inbred, sociopathic assholes with titles in front of their names..
