Obi-Wan Kenobi - It Gets Worse  

This is a slightly snuffly review, as I have flu. This might also result in one or two things having been missed or misidentified. I don't believe this undermines any of the points made herein, but I aim to publish a video at the end of the season going through points made in these videos and correcting them where necessary, and generally responding to criticism. A series of polemics/rants will, obviously, not be quite as rigorous as a full-length video essay, but it’s important that we be as honest as possible in our criticisms, and it’s my hope that this approach will result in a final verdict that’s not based on any mistakes or misconceptions that may have been carried through from these earlier videos.

Was a blast fighting Vader in Fallen Order, even if it was destined for you to lose and escape. Damn, they really captured him right, the way he swatted away Cere and the look on Trilla's face when she heard his breathing were all done to perfection.

My son, 14, who I partially raised on Star Wars, watched this and said "the writing is horrible", "why didn't he just go around the laser gate". He also said "Vader's breathing is the most iconic breathing in all of movie history" and gave an "ooofff" when the storm trooper was cut in half. He has seen all movies and all of clone wars (almost all episodes). He knows Star wars very well and respects it. He does not analyze or view this through the lens of culture or politics, but just thinks this show is not that good.

Vader keeps mysteriously appearing out of the darkness...despite sounding like a steam train and being lit up like a christmas tree...

When I rewatched the OT, I noticed that every time the protagonists get away from Vader, it was because Vader had planned it in order to find the rebel alliance or to draw them into an even more intense trap. It wasn't from incompetence like everything he does in this show. What's more entertaining? A scary bad guy who is always a step ahead of your heros or a murderous monster who is so stupid he can't walk around burning sand?

Somehow disney manages to retcon their own canon which is quite a feat in itself. Great work guys👏👍

It's crazy how in those clips of Fallen Order, the acting by the CG characters is ten times better than the actors in the series!

So if these two have another fight at the end like the leaks suggest, Vader's gonna get waxed for the second time, at peak Sith no less, and come back saying he "was but the learner" Makes him sound salty, not confident

To be fair to the Imperial Officer/Underground Railroad character, Luke Skywalker also wanted to join the Empire in ANH, just like his friend Biggs. It's possible she was just as ignorant as to what it stood for when she joined. She might've also been from some backwater world and had little experience with it. ... and now I'm defending something in this show. Ugh. Time for bed.

The idea that Obi-wan leaves his best friend to die then only sees him again when they're both ancient and more estranged than ever, at the respective heights and lows of their strength before he gets struck down and becomes more powerful than he can possibly imagine, proving the failure of the dark side once again was pretty cool, right? Man this is good analysis. Forgetting all the obvious SJW, bad writing etc for a minute, what’s bad about these shows in this : Where’s the artistry? The grandeur? The Majesty of Star Wars? Star Wars is a simplistic story about goodies and baddies and the triumph of morality over power. Greek Tragedy. Remember Luke and twin sunset with John Williams’ music? Or the music and sound when the Millenium Falcon helplessly enters the Death Star, as being drawn into the mouth of some giant beast? Or the Imperial March playing when Vader arrives at the 2nd Death Star to check on it’s “lack of progress”? Absolutely hallmark scenes, amazing and artistic cinematography, great sound, and perfect music. These shows have nothing, absolutely forgettable crap.

There’s absolutely no doubt in my mind KK is intentionally destroying these male legacy characters. She’s the most petty and vindictive woman in Hollywood.

This is the greatest breakdown so far. It won't be heard. We are overwhelmed by idiots, ignorance, and people that just don't really care about Star Wars.

Your comments about using narrow corridors and enclosed spaces to make Vader seem more intimidating are almost correct, but you forgot one critical element: This version of Vader has a force ability to teleport to any place on the planet that is just off camera, then menacingly step into sight of the camera and cut off any hope of retreat while walking excruciatingly slowly because his victim has lost all hope of escape. I think he learned this technique from Jason Voorhees. Jason was very intimidating. Honestly, I wouldn't have been surprised if this Vader had traded in his lightsaber for a machete.

A youngling named Katheen Kennedy, who was a pupil of Lucasfilm before she turned to EVIL. She helped the Disney Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi Knights. She betrayed and murdered the True Magic of the Force.

Okay, seriously, who in their right mind is paying for a Disney Plus subscription? I guarantee whatever is on their is either not worth it or can be found for free with a quick internet search. Also, for gods sake, who is still holding out that Star Wars will improve now? I saw more than enough with the garbage Rey Trilogy. To Disney, Star Wars is not art and is not respected as the inspiration that it is. It's a cash cow to be milked, it's a mouthpiece for them to preach gender and race politics, it's a way for them to be "Inclusive" while talking down to their fans at every opportunity. The Star Wars we all knew and loved is *dead* . Better to just stick to the great memories of old from the books and original trilogy, instead of punishing ourselves by tuning in for cash grabs like this.

I don´t think the outdoors fight is totally mistaken. I think that the fact that it was nighttime adds to the claustrophobic sense. A plain desert or an open space can be equally claustrophobic since there is no place to escape to. No house or cave to hide into. In a way, there is nowhere to run so I do not think it is totally mistaken. The execution of the idea wasn't the best though, the set looked like a run of the mill mine found on planet Earth, I'm sure things could be added to make it look at least subtly otherworldly so it could look less like fan fiction scene filmed in a factory round the corner.

The ANH dialogue now only makes sense if Vader was still talking about Mustafar - which is conversation that they would have had, when they met... So it's like he's just saved the conversation he wanted to have 9 years earlier for that moment. Like when you think of a cutting retort, but the person has already left the room. EDIT: OK, so there are people who apparently don't understand subtext is a thing in dialogue. 1. Obi-Wan has ALREADY told the audience in ANH, Darth Vader was 'a young Jedi' who was 'a pupil of mine, until he turned to evil'. 2. When I left you... is not literally 'walked away from', it's talking about leaving behind THE JEDI to use THE DARK SIDE, and so when he meets Obi-Wan he has a philosophical point; under the Jedi, as your pupil, I was a 'learner' i.e. naive, but NOW, with THE DARK SIDE, he has surpassed Obi-Wan. 3. If you watch THE PREQUELS again, you'll notice how Anakin says that Obi-Wan is holding him back, and jealous, and he wants more POWER. 4. He also tells Obi-Wan he does not fear the DARK SIDE. 5. If Obi-Wan and Vader meet between ROTS and ANH, Sidious is now HIS MASTER, and so it's dumb for him to compare himself to Obi-Wan AS THE ROLES REVERSED, when he has ALREADY met Obi-Wan with Sidious as his master. 6. There's no 'circle to complete', if they already met when Vader was a DARK SIDE Force user, because there's no sense of CLOSURE from their PREVIOUS duel on Mustafar. 7. In THE PREQUELS, Anakin is clearly shown as being supremely arrogant, and later a hateful man, so there is NO WAY, he would ever call himself "A LEARNER" using the DARK SIDE 10 YEARS AFTER he left Obi-Wan. "Learner" must refer to his naivety as merely a Jedi apprentice of Obi-Wan, without knowing THE POWER of the dark side. This is a conversation about whether LIGHT or DARK is the better. 8. Yoda fucking tells us the DARK SIDE is QUICKER, so 10 years would be ample time - and practically the same amount of time Anakin had as a Jedi. 9. Vader would be too proud to state that he lost the previous duel on Mustafar. If they had met once or twice in the intervening years, it would be an entirely different conversation in ANH.

Quickly becoming one of my favorite RU-vidrs. Keep it up. Also, 30 minute format is perfect. I would also watch 3 hours.

To quote Count Dooku: “I’ve been looking forward to this”. I’ve said this on other reviews, a lot of people who like this show say that Vader let Obi Wan be taken by that droid was because of "him wanting a challenge" or being "underwhelmed by that fight". Darth Vader (who has been described by actors and others involved in the show as being in his peak) wouldn't have let a little bit of fire stop him from capturing a man he’s been murderously searching for ten years. Even if their encounter was underwhelming, Vader’s ultimate goal in life was to find Obi Wan and make him suffer the way he did on Mustafar in Revenge of the Sith. Plus Vader was able to put out the fire with the force moments ago, why couldn’t he just do that again. Also, why wouldn’t he just walk through the fire or simply leap over it, since his suit protects him from pretty much anything. But clearly the Galactic Empire known as Disney and Darth Kathleen Kennedy don’t understand how to honour what has come before! As Obi Wan says in the movie that started it all: “I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.”

My only issue with this show is Lord Vader giving up so easily, like in the books this man literally murdered a room full of Jedi because he thought Kenobi was in there.

In a nutshell the crazies are so adamant that diversity and equality must be forced onto everyone that they’ve forgotten what makes television good. You know an actual believable plot, good characters and not trying to make beloved characters look bad because they’re not in the right demographic.

Leia says she has "images, really, feelings. She was kind, but sad". These could have easily been sensations or images passed to her while still in the womb by the Force. I'm not sure it's even a plot hole.

Why would the empire raid a planet instead of subjugating it? They'd get more resources from getting a cut of what they produce. They're not vikings, they're supposed to be an empire.

i thought obi wan was removing the barrier in order to allow him to steer the vehicle through.. but then he just left the vehicle behind and it pans out showing how dumb he is LOL. then he surrenders to 3 regular storm troopers despite dispatching a handful of them with ease literally moments before and don't even get me started on kenobi escaping vader because of a wall of fire that was demonstrated seconds earlier to be easily extinguished by the force yet Vader inexplicably chooses instead to stand by and watch as kenobi is dragged away. this is S8 game of thrones level of terrible

In the OT, Vader says, "Obi-Wan has taught you well", perhaps thinking that Luke was a padawan to Obi-Wan his whole life (and not knowing that he was also mentored by Yoda). But here, in this fan film TV show, Vader knows that Obi-Wan was a coward, idiot and weak in the Force, so it's weird he comes to that conclusion. I'm fairly confident now that Kennedy/LF has made this show intentionally about sad Obi-Wan, and about racism against Moses and gaslighting articles, in order to legitimise her shitty sequels as being in the same conversation.

This was so well done. I really appreciate the insight into filmography, and overall you really put into words the groaning I felt when disappointed throughout these three episodes. It really is a shame :(

So this could just be me, but I always thought Leia mentioning remembering her mother to be an indication of her force sensitivity. What she remembered wasn't necessarily her mother's face (because she and Luke were newborns) but something more... IDK if that makes any sense, but that's what I thought!

Overall a highly articulate though sometimes snooty review that captures the many egregious problems Let's face the facts 1) all continuity error are absolutely intentional because #KathleenKennedy hates the original #StarWars and all her efforts have been intended to destroy it 2) the correctly #SJW writers and directors readily explain the bad scripts, actors and movie production. In the more recent Star Wars MMO (not the original) I made a Sith character and found one contrasting element of the Sith and the Jedi really compelling; the Sith feed on strong emotions, to the extend that manipulating others and also themselves into strong responses and passionate motivations is part of them increasing their abilities in the moment. Where as we all know from the prequals that the Jedi are all about suppression, control, suppression. So then Anakin's behavior sort of makes sense in that he was always trained and brought up in a culture of control, but he emotionally "fits in" with Sith more; thus as a darkside force user he is very powerful using this hybrid approach. All of that said, aside from Snok and the Emperor, I really, really don't ever see the actors cast as Sith going beyond a comic book villain when being strategically "ham" with their performances would in theory aid their potential power in any given situation. I think Jedi and Sith stuff would be so much more interesting if we could just have that full-on contrast; the meditative monks vs. the Kabuki actors. If one becomes the other; the monk becomes too emotional, or the emotive becomes to calm and level they would then become "unbalanced" and "weak"; because the darkside demands passionate emotion, while the light demands discipline/focus. But I guess we're just continued to be doomed with brooding badies who don't stand-out from the serene Jedi very much at all.

15:22 The mole guy most likely decided to turn them in now because Obi-Wan and Leia started talking about the Jedi and other things that 2 completely average farmers wouldn't talk about. The mole guy isn't that far away and Obi-Wan and Leia aren't really whispering. On top of that the mole guy is shown to be very loyal and respects the empire so any suspicions he had about them would be cleared up during the inspection at that check point.

Talentless hacks like Hidalgo are to blame, but ultimately so is Lucas. He gets venerated despite the fact that his pettiness over the prequels' reception is a big factor to why he didn't do the sequel trilogy himself. He then handed it all off for a payday, to the likes of Kathleen Kennedy and activists who can't write their way out of a paper bag. It got him billions of dollars and some perceived vindication of his own work, surely making him feel more appreciated in comparison to what Disney has made of his IP.

So if Vader can dominate Obi-Wan with the Force, the ANH duel is broken. Any tension is gone and Vader is reduced to an idiot for not opening with the Force. The cautious nature Vader showcased, highlighting that he hasn't forgotten about Mustafar and is taking Obi-Wan VERY seriously, becomes nonsensical.

Leia said in Return of the Jedi that she knew her mother, because in the original story, Padmé didn't die at childbirth. She took Leia to Alderaan and lived with her there until she died when she was very young, while Luke was taken by Obi Wan to Tatooine to be raised by Owen, who was Obi Wan's brother. Somehow George Lucas forgot about this and decided to change that.

I’m so glad we have updated this sci fi fantasy series to be more representative of today’s society.

Darth Vader couldn't sense Obi Wan anymore, this is why he was randomly killing villagers, he needed Obi Wan to show himself. DUH. Darth let Kenobi go because he wants to break him when he at his weakest, plus he was kind of shocked he had help with him, he wants to root out the rebellion so.

In the original Star Wars Novelization, Owen was Obi-wan's brother, with no Tattooine connection with Anakin... But old George couldn't let anyone create anything better than himself, so Ani was raised on the most famous nowhere world in the galaxy.

I really dnt see why everyone is hating the show… we still have 3 episodes left. The Vader and obiwan material is great. Other than reva sucks and the inquisitor being “dead”( I really doubt he’s dead) the show is really good. The 3rd episode is some of the best Star Wars content I’ve seen to date. Seeing obiwan look out at anikan on the desert they’re duel at the end… I think it’s great. Some of the comments from this channel make me think u dnt know much about the story. The snarky remark of obiwan calling out to quigon and saying oh give it up he’s dead… u do realize he did this in the comics and did commune with quigon… i Dino for all those super hating on the show, go read the comics and learn more about the characters. Again other than some filler, reva and just keeping us in suspense, I think the show is great. Not sure where the hate is coming from. The music isn’t as memorable but it’s not completely horrific. Way better than the sequel trilogy. Plus we are getting other shows this year and next do again I dnt get the ultra hate that I feel from videos like this. It’s literally not pick the entirety of the show as everything is crap and they’re is not an ounce of good in it just seems biased.

I was hoping that this show would be about parallel stories where we see Vader and obi Wan in similar stories but never seeing each other since it would ruin a new hope. I've said this time and again with all of what Disney has done with star wars is that it all feels like it's a fan fiction none of it feels right it just all feels off

i watched kenobi after stranger things season 4 and i scratched my head after seeing the huge gap of the production between those two, even vecna felt more menacing than vader, sorry disney

1:10 I wish they would stop doing the violent camera shakes anytime a ship flies by. its like when lens flares were introduced in photoshop and suddenly everyones pictures looked like a JJ Abrams film. enough already. or at least give it some character, randomness sucks and its clinical. and yeah fck star wars. its not ours anymore. it always belonged to everyone but they came along and stole it from everyone and fed it through a tube of BS. when I was a kid the Force was a mystical power that bound and held the galaxy together, and gave the Jedi strength. now the force is female midichlorians. da fuq? Also, im gonna ramble here: I saw Star Wars in 77. A year later they came out with a toy that you popped a cassette into. it was like 4 or 8mm film. you cranked the handle and each cassette had about 1 minutes worth of footage. it was hand cranked and you could roll backwards as well. now remember we had no audio visual storage devices. not even a VCR. I would lay in bed for hours scrolling through footage. The end duel with Kenobi and Darth was on it. Now in the real world, Lucas used rotating rods with reflective tape on them for the effect, but there was one shot of Ben holding the saber towards camera and it started losing the glow, and started sort of "sparkling". as a kid I thought the force moved through a Jedi and powered the saber. I thought Ben was weakening and thats why his light saber was running out of power. And then in Empire, this shot at 2:10 was the first time I saw a saber open that slowly, and it scared me. Like Darth was calm, relaxed and steady. Anyway, im sure ill be back to edit this with more stories ha ha. yall have a great weekend

It is truly sad how Disney is destroying Lucas’s lore.. Organa as Obi-Wan had one job: taking care of the twins.. already in the first episode Organa looses Leia and instead of using the resources of Alderan, he directly finds Obi-Wan who decides to leave Luke while inquisitors just arrived and even threatened uncle Owen? Seriously? Also very tired to see all men making stupid decision before being ridiculed by a woman.. absolutely no misogyny here! Big fan of strong female characters! A big part in this is the fact that a lot of the actors and writers are not and have never been fans of star wars as a whole or at least any star wars beyond the movies

I’m old enough to be an original fan, and I certainly remember used to shit on the original Vader Obi wan fight and how clumsy it looked. And also how people hated the Ewoks. It’s like “true” fans want to act like Empire is the only Star Wars movie that ever existed.

It’s weird that they never gave Reeva a theme where Trilla in Jedi Fallen Order had a really menacing and appropriate theme for her character.

At this point in time Vader is closer to an enraged Anakin Skywalker than the original movies. He didn't seem out of character. Obi-Wan is a shadow of the man he used to be... But why is that a bad thing? It makes sense given what he's been through. And he'll know doubt find himself again. I'll take what they are doing with Kenobi any day over the sequel trilogy.

im praying that their unevitable final encounter in maybe episode 6 actually does what this one couldnt, but if it doesnt, im never cancelling d+, wont consider the show canon and will never watch star wars again. Only the PT, OT, CW and rebels.

I 100% agree that a defeated and world-weary Kenobi was necessary to his character at this point in the timeline. I couldn’t understand why some other channels couldn’t see past the TLJ comparisons to the fact Kenobi lost in the previous chapter whereas Luke had *won* the last time he was on screen. Still, just because a brooding and spiritually absent Kenobi works at this point in the story, doesn’t mean he should also be a bumbling, emasculated idiot who’s easily outsmarted by stormtroopers and children at every turn, either.

Maybe Vader was studying philatelics (stamp collecting) and knew Obi Wan had quite an extensive knowledge of stamp collecting at this time. Then, by the time of episode IV, Vader had mastered the hobby.

Vader was also more intimidating in the OT because the guy playing him was a 6'6" bodybuilder who was probably 6'9" ish in the costume.

I could of accepted obi-wan getting captured, getting interrogated by Vader, I do not like Reva, but I wouldn’t mind her helping Obi-Wan after he talks to her and convinces her she is on the wrong path. In the end Obi-Wan faces Vader and Fakes his death. So it makes sense that Vader is saying a feeling I haven’t felt since…. Then when he says to Luke, Obi-Wan thought as you do. But they messed that up completely.

This is the most intelligently explained reason as to why I dislike this series. I could only summon a wtf while watching. I felt as if I was watching something on the OC. Thank you for explaining to me why I was saying wtf.

"I get confused" ~ basically an entire summary of all the people who are involved with the production of this show.

This series should go to demonstrate why the EU was important. It existed to give breathing room for writers to create their own stories without having to worry about the established canon too much. Now, since everything is now canon, everything has to fit within specific confines to fit into the ‘canon’ or it wrecks the entire franchise.
