The diversity chart that activision had, basically awarded more points to characters the more diverse they are. For example, if you made a character that was african american, the character would be awarded +5 points, make that character female +3 points, they were 65 years old +8 points. On the other hand, for a character like Soldier 76, a old white male who is gay, he would be awarded less points on the chart because he was a white man which is considered to not be diverse. The only reason Soldier 76 didn't score 0 on the chart is that he's old and gay. While the diversity of characters in Overwatch is really good, people felt that scoring characters based on things like race, culture and gender was really inappropriate. It just felt like they were making a tier list of races and genders.

I can at least understand acts argument about the diversity chart, that it could lead to lazily written even sterotypical, characters, rather than genuinely interesting and thought-out characters because they're artificially going out of their way to create characters of a certain background or whatever based on data and numbers in an effort cynically pander the widest possible audience. Like I actually agree that a lot of this shit can be gross like rainbow capitalism queerbating or even something like black/gay etc washing a character or entire cast for a lazy rehash of something where almost nothing about the character has changed except they're a different race orientation or gender especially when the writers/artists etc involved are all still straight white dudes and rely on sterotypical surface level shit instead of actually having people from those groups on the team or at least as consultants informing how the identity would affect the character(s)/story, and that these lame half-ass cynical projects take up industry resources, investment capital, cultural attention etc away from more genuine attempts to tell stories from the pov and involving marginalized people, that are written with input or from the perspectives of those, hand waves away calls for diversity without having to put in much effort, and makes a big media stir which generally translates to free advertising. On top of the fact that they fuel the narrative of "forced diversity" because they're mostly pretty mid to bad movies that bank on that press cycle. All that said I think it's pretty easy to differentiate between a cynical project and a genuine one, like you can look at the team and the process to gauge whether or not they really care about representation, diversity etc, and those that made a last minute choice to rework something after focus groups or hiring a consultant firm etc. obviously for the shareholders and execs it's all just numbers ultimately and market trends are s huge for e behind what gets greenlit and funded, especially in Hollywood, and no matter how diverse your staff is if the boardroom is a homogenous sea of apricot Americans, chances are they're more likely to make pandering shit because they don't wont necessarily have the perspective to see how that's detrimental, while also thinking the actual good project with a diverse team telling a new story from an underrepresented perspective, is too much of a risk because it will alienate people, often making them add or change a major character that white, or adding in a pointless uninteresting attractive hetero love interest (generally a woman obviously) for the relatable power fantasy (usually a man) MC, make the love interest either fawn for him from the jump or realize she was wrong about him and throw herself at him after he wins the day. With a long protracted make out or sex scene for the audience to self insert and goon to or whatever, because if they don't people might think the MC is gay and not want to re insert themselves in his position, and this will not like or recommend it. That was a long rant to say no diversity initiatives aren't necessarily bad but they can be kinda gross, and shitty if done wrong, and I don't fault people for being sceptical of corporate pandering. I think the issue is blown out of proportion misrepresented, and over simplified by both libs and conservatives, because of the way far right people manipulate the narrative around stuff like this. They use niche and specific examples to inflate their cultural impact, and frequency of occurrence by infiltrating fandom spaces forums etc, organized trolling, coordinated article flooding, etc so public perception amongst people interested in the thing being talked about is that this "woke agenda" shit is in everything and its why thing you like is bad now. Then the people criticizing made by committee slop can get lumped in with the far right trolls, and even wind up falling down the rabbit hole because of ostracization. Then people in different groups fandoms and subcultures talk cross polenate and the "narrative" or "woke agenda" guys talk and people start to think "damn they got x and now why too, why ARE they forcing this stuff into everything" and next thing you know a bunch of apolitical nerds become right wing/far right weirdos, often aided by thevfact a lot of online nerds are for a lack of a better phrase lonely Virgins, who are used to a lot of fandom stuff resonating with them, and feel entitled as a loyal fan/customer to dictate what an ip should be, and assume that because they make fandom their personality only people like them spend money on and consume the material.
