Neither.. it is about a Boxer's LIFE.... His career, his love, his family, his struggles, his emotions, his ups and downs. It is a LIFE story. One that just happens to have an odd career path...... but a GREAT love story as well.

Charlie Chaplin, Orsen Welles and Sylvester Stallone are the first three actors to be nominated for writing and acting in the same films. Impressive company Sly keeps. Also, at a total of 42 years... I believe Stallone is the actor who has played the same role for the greatest number of years and the greatest number of films. This guy deserves far more respect than he gets. His accomplishments have been ground-breaking in several ways.

I did my master's in Screenwriting and Sylvester Stallone is a much appreciated inspiration as a writer. There are so many brilliant things happening in this script, especially with dialogue. I have no idea how many times I've watched this film, but I always find something new pop out that I hadn't caught before, mostly little things that are so clever yet subtle. Terrific story, terrific writing.

The Vaseline is so the glove slips off, preventing some cuts. When a boxer throws a punch they twist at the wrist, in an attempt to get the glove to grab skin and twist tearing open a cut.

Wonderful reaction! Modern audiences often don't understand the differences of a world almost 50 years ago, or don't have the life experience or maturity to understand things like Paulie's character or the fact that Tony Gazzo the loan shark could be a friend to Rocky or not thinking that Rocky forced himself on Adrian. Not only did you not get hung up on those things, but you understood everything perfectly - especially the most important part - Rocky's character. People watching reactions don't care if you like or dislike something. We just want you to "get it". Your enjoyment is just icing on the cake. Cheers!

It was not only Stallone's script. He had to fight to realize the film. It is a love movie and a movie about boxing. But it is also a description that most of the people have to a fight for their everyday home and meal and don't have the chance to fulfill the American Dream. A great movie and as well as "Rambo" six years later one of my favourites for sure. An amazing start of Stallones world career.

It's quite the dramatic character masterpiece enrobed as a boxing film. Adrian, Paulie, and even Mickey, add so much to the story around Rocky and his journey toward defining himself. None of the rest are as well made and grounded as this one (it fully deserved winning Best Picture), but Rocky's journey is worth getting excited about.

The Dog (Butkus) was Sylvester's Dog! He was so broke when he wrote this that he had to sell his dog for $60.. Sylvester used his First Check to buy his dog back (for $1,500). Rocky lost the Fight, but he won even more... He went the Distance , Got a Wonderful Girl and proved to himself that the people that put him down were wrong about him.. Rocky 2,3 and 4 get better and better!

Hi Biss! You just watched my favorite movie of all time. I was 10 when this movie came out. Over the years, I've watched this movie probably at least 50 times, more than any other movie. I think this character is the best in the history of cinema. He's physically strong, yet is also humble, which seems to be rare. He is simply, a good and caring person. Rocky isn't book smart, but he is street smart. I love how much he loves Adrian. I read that Sly (his friends call him Sly) originally thought about giving Rocky a little bit darker, meaner personality, to make Rocky more "realistic". Sadly I guess a lot, maybe even most, people, have a dark side to them. I'm SO glad he DIDN'T do that, because to me the Rocky we have represents the kind of person we should aspire to be - good. And, oh yeah, Rocky kicks butt! Side note: Butkus the dog was Sly's dog irl. Most likely he was named after Dick Butkus, an American Football player from the '60's. I'm old, but he played before my time. He was my Dad's favorite player. He said NOBODY hit as hard as Butkus. I've seen interviews of players admitting they were scared of him. Anyway the important part here is, Sly was so broke right before Rocky, he couldn't afford to keep Butkus the dog. The happy ending is after Rocky was made, Sly bought Butkus back.

Fun fact: The fight scenes were shot in reverse order, from final round to opening because it was easier for the FX crew to remove the fight makeup between rounds than to add it. They started off all beaten up then ended all clean and beautiful.

The fact that Apollo wins is incidental. Rocky achieved his goal of simply going the distance. Even Apollo wasn’t a true “bad guy” as he is a descent man whose biggest sin is he went into the fight having no respect for Rocky as a fighter. He learned very quickly that it would be a hard fight.

The vaseline on the eyes is to help ease/reduce/prevent cuts. The lubrication helps the glove to keep steady movement over your skin as opposed to the glove material gripping and tearing flesh (this is still less likely than with the horrific tearing of bare knuckles, but still). Worst of all, these cuts in combat sports sometimes might be indicative of the bone under being broken -- which could mean going blind. Basically, its so the fight can go longer and remain interesting by reducing smaller cuts -- if there's blood, it's usually because it was earned (in a morbid sense).
@AnthonyRodriguez-dy3bz
@AnthonyRodriguez-dy3bz Год назад
Stallone admitted that the character did not drink the raw eggs for protein. He has to have them raw because Rocky does not have gas for the stove to cook them. It was meant to show how broke he was financially, but that didn't come through in the movie. People assumed it was for training purposes..

You're feelings about reacting to older movies are totally understandable and adorable. I think even more than sentimentality, the reason some folks can be so protective about them is because they may appreciate the greater context from which that movie was created. How society was, politics, or even the limited technology of it's day and now comes some young whippersnapper (you) judging these movies against those from this year and they might feel it's too superficial or an unfair comparison. I see where they are coming from but I also see where folks like you are coming from. Not all movies age well but many still have a special place in their heart for them so it's special to them. Some movies still work because the story is so good. Rocky is one of those movies perhaps because it's not a sports movie as much as it is a love story, it hits on many levels and I feel like Creed 1 is too. Great reaction as usual!

Scoring a professional boxing match: Apollo Creed won by a split decision In professional boxing matches, three judges, who sit right at ringside, will score each round via a 10-point system. When one boxer dominates the other boxer in a round, the judges will each give him 10 points and the other boxer 9 points. When one boxer strongly dominates, the other boxer may get only 8 points. If neither boxer dominates, they may each get only 9 or 8 points. This may happen when few punches are thrown. When the match goes all 12 rounds, the three judges count up all their points, and they each vote for a winner or a draw. Unanimous Decision: 3-0-0 Split Decision: 2-1-0 Majority Decision: 2-0-1 (One judge calls it a draw) Majority decision draw: 1-0-2 (Two judges call a draw) Split decision draw: 1-1-1

Sly intended 'Rocky Balboa' to be the absolutely final Rocky film, and I thought it was a fitting ending. I thought it recaptured the heart of the original film.

'Southpaw' means left-handed in general. Rocky is however right-handed but fights with a left-handed south-paw stance. This is one of the things Mickey faults him for, Rocky never having learned properly. Apollo's trainer also warns about Rocky fighting south-paw, as Apollo would have to prepare against south-paw sparring.

Oi, I feel old. I was 6when this movie csme out. No, this isn't the early days of boxing. Boxing was probably one of the very earliest competitions early man ever invented, many centuries ago. The current rule framework was adopted and the idea of a finite number of rounds was introduced in the 1930s. Bouts do not last 15 rounds anymore. The heavyweight division goes 12, and may be reduced to 9 soon. Men's weight classes other than heavyweight go 9 rounds. All womrn's bouts are limited to 8 rounds. Trivia: by the rules in place at the time the movies are made, Rocky is never actually big enough to fight as a heavyweight, he is always too light by a varying number if pounds/kilos. **Rocky 2 picks up exactly where this one ends.

Butkus was actually Sly's dog. Even though he did small roles in other movies back in the 70's (plus a porno movie and I'm not kidding), he still wasn't a rich man and he wasn't that well known yet, in fact he was so broke that he had to sell Buttkus just so he could get money (I think it was because he had become a father and he was trying to take care of his family). But when he sold the script to Rocky (in which he wrote it in only 3 days) and got to play the lead role (originally the studio wanted a more famous name & Ryan O'Neal from Love Story and Barry Lyndon was considered, but Sly demanded either he played the lead role or they wouldn't get his script), he used the money to buy Butkus back and he put him in the movie. Sly also owns those turtles and I heard that those turtles are still alive (but I'm not sure If still alive today) He doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving because he's Italian (American Italian), it's because he doesn't have anybody to celebrate it with so for him it's just a regular day. Adrian is shy and has low self esteem, she's basically the ugly duckling, but she comes out of her shell when she's with Rocky and her confidence grows as well. Yes, you're thinking about the army poster of Uncle Sam pointing at the person saying "I WANT YOU!" to join the U.S. Army.

One thing you missed: Apollo said he wanted a "Snow White underdog" This is the US in the 70s. He meant he wanted a white guy to fight, because boxing had become weirdly racial over the 20th Century, with people frequently rooting for same-race boxers instead of players they liked. But, because Rocky is so nice, it never really gets turned into a racial thing

40 bucks for a fight was chump change. Strictly local talent volunteering to get beat up. It was worth a lot more than it is NOW of course. You could fill your tank for less than half of it in your giant American car. But people who lived in hovel apartments in the city and made $40 bucks a few times a month boxing couldn't afford a car. On the other hand, making 40 bucks at a job per day was about average blue collar wages for lower middle class back then, and a fight, not including the training and potential injuries, only took a few hours. So, I mean if you could do it every day, it would have been a good job. But You couldn't. By todays standards, it would be maybe a hundred bucks, and it wouldn't be worth it to fight for a hundred bucks even today, unless it was all you COULD do for money, and boxing was your dream or hobby. The minimum wage in 1975 was $2.10 per hour. So you'd have to work at the crummiest job possible for about 20 hours to earn $40.

Story behind the movie is really kind of as interesting as the film. Stallone was a struggling actor/writer and down to the point he had to sell his dog to a friend because he couldn't afford to fee him. He wrote the script for this film with the intent to star in it himself, and the studio's like the script but didn't want him in the role. He was getting offers of $300,000 for the script alone and turning them down. Imagine struggling to pay bills and turning down $300,000 ($1,611,727 today). And finally one studio said yeah will let Stallone star in it as well. Film cost $2,000,000 to make. And won in the awards, and sealing Stallone as a Hollywood star. Oh and he bought his dog back. Same dog that is in the film. $40 is about $225.60 today. The Vasoline is to keep the gloves from cutting the face. Same with the nasal spray. It is to moisten the airway so you don't get nasal cuts and start breathing blood.

For 1975 you can just multiply dollars times 6. So the $40 he got at the beginning of the movie for that first fight was $240, which was next to nothing.

Most people who do reactions for this movie, especially younger ones, miss the real life atmosphere of 1976. Creed rode in like George Washington because 1976 was the 200 year anniversary of the Revolution that made the United States. So people really were patriotic when this movie came out for something to grab onto because they had just gone through the Vietnam War and Watergate.

40:30 - Yes, all boxers & MMA fighters put Vaseline on their faces to keep themselves from getting cut when they are punched. But they no longer allow trainers to apply it back stage. Back in the day, trainers could apply Vaseline on boxers themselves. These days, however, you will see that the fighters have to come into the arena "completely dry" and Vaseline is applied by an "official". That's because some trainers applied far too much Vaseline giving their fighters an unfair advantage. Now, both fighters will be given an equal amount.

The first fight was just a club fight in a church gym. $40 in '75 would have been enough to buy about 30 gallons of gasoline or about 7 cartons of cigarettes (70 packs)

I really hope you do the series. I think you'll enjoy it, but if you do, you're going to have to get used to one thing: Rocky will get punched in the head a LOT. It's the one frustrating thing through all of the movies. Fight starts, 3-4 rounds of Rocky getting punched in the face without blocking, then he fights back. Other than that, it's an awesome story about love and life, that has some boxing in it.

That's cool Madalina. You don't have to like everything everybody else does. it's a sign that you are a strong individual if you can kick against the tide. Don't let anyone tell you what you have to like or dislike. Still watching your music and film reactions and digging it. Love that black top. Almost as much as I like your long black hair. So pretty. Even like it when you swear with that super sexy accent. Big shoutout from your guy in the States. Love you, lots. See you on the next, Miss Bisscute. And do not worry... 30 is not old. You've plenty of time to still find your knight in shining armor. Much peace, love, and happiness to you and yours. Later, beautiful.
