Obsidian - Canvas vs Excalidraw

I'm going to embark on a video series about tools like Canvas and Excalidraw. I've been doing lots of testing though and come to a conclusion about which tool is the better solution. This video show's why I have made my decision and what that decision is.

I've tried to move from ExcaliDraw to Canvas and.... nah! As you said, ExcaliDraw is faster and, in my opinion, it is even easier to use!

I personally use canvas to hold different embedded random table results and excalidraw for mind mapping like you do in your examples

YES!! Canvas really needs to be more like Milanotes. Just a few more features and it could compete with Milanotes minus the online features. I don't want to use Excalidraw because you never know when development might stop, since it's just a one person project. Canvas is our only hope. I've been looking for any news on future updates. I REALLY hope they get on it asap.

In excalodraws defence it updates so often (way more than obsodian) that's its become a joke that you can't update your plugins without excalodraw being updated also.

@@JoshPlunkett Ah lol that's good. Things Excalidraw don't have or I haven't been able to figure out are dotted background and auto snapping. The two most basic things for something like this. I just can't deal with visual alignment, and I don't even have OCD. Also many elements don't look professional or refined enough.

@@SamBorgman Snapping is by default enabled when you show grid (Just right click anywhere on the canvas and click show grid or use the shortcut Ctrl+' on windows). Alternatively, if you hold down Ctrl on windows while moving any object it will snap. There is also an excalidraw automate script that can change the grid size alongside many other amazing scripts like mindmapping, custom pens etc.

Do back links and connections work with either of these tools?

You can create links from nodes to notes but I don't think it works with that stuff.

Agree with you sir. Right now i'm facing the opposite issue: converting my .canvas files seamlessly into .excalidraw ones. Any tips come to mind guys?

I'm not aware of anyway to automate it. Just have to make them manually to my knowledge.

Can you move the objects in Excalidraw and then the lines/arrows connecting the objects will automatically rearrange itself like it does in Canvas? Thank you.

Yes. As long as you actually connected the arrows to the nodes theu will update.

@@JoshPlunkett Oh thanks! So it is only the arrows that will move?!! Line connections don't?! I have been using the line tool to connect objects only to find the lines are not moving at all!

@@warren2010 If your lines aren't moving it means you have not connected to the node object. There's a different colour border that appears when you drag a connector to a shape. You need to connect to border using these. It is possible to not do this which means you make a completely disconnected object that won't move if things change.

@@JoshPlunkett My arrows are connecting and moving and behaving as expected but haven't got a clue how to connect lines to an object really.
