I'm a fellow Dungeon Master and big supporter of using Obsidian.md as a Campaign Manager.
I assist the community by developing tutorials and templates to help them on the journey or learning how to unleash the power of Obsidian.md for their own campaigns. You can find my tutorials and content available here:

I've been making videos since 2016 and have provided extensive coverage of the tool Realm Works. All of my videos are available for free for all. My Patreon page is just for those people asking to have a way to show their appreciation. This journey has never been about fiscal reward for me so the community support has blown me away and keeps me focussed on creating more content.
I tried Obsidian some time ago when I was looking for a good Markdown Editor. It didn't really meet my needs. Since becoming a DM, I have revisited Obsidian and found it a great tool. Loving your work, Josh, as I go down the TTRPG rabbit hole.
Hi Josh, Having some issues getting the DM-Screen & Sidescreen running. I placed the books required in the full source section but its only populating a quarter of the DM Screen with links
Also, about the alpha channel GIMP business... this is a bit niche but maybe it's useful: An image's alpha channel is its transparency on a scale from 100% visible (white) to 100% transparent (black). What this means is, if your image is already greyscale and you want it to be transparent in the white spots, you can invert it and paste it into the alpha channel, then fill the normal channel with black (or whatever color you want the lines to be.) This will turn those leftover greyish spots to semi-transparent, so they'll look nice on darker backgrounds. :) Clip Studio Paint has a dedicated "convert brightness to opacity" option these days, so I haven't had to do this in a while, but I remember the old days of scanning in lineart to color in old versions of GIMP/Photoshop, haha.
Oh this looks fun! If I recall correctly, Dyson's original set of ~100 square geomorphs are available for personal and non-commercial use, and lots of people have made compatible ones, so they might be an even better resource for this than these business-card-shaped ones.
Yeah I was looking at those. Technically I shouldn't provide them as my channel is monetised so I fall into the category of commercial vs non commercial. There's some great options there though!
A few things that did not work for me: 1) the # to create a title does not create a title. It simply makes a tag. 2) There is no option for making the z_Attachment folder the default for all attachments. I have to drag all the images to the folder.
You need a space after the # to make a title. Add more #s to adjust the title size. The devs moved the attachment folder into the settings. So set it in there and it should work the same way.
For the drag and drop of the note on excalidraw, try [[ |Note#Tag]] this should make the display text as a single space maybe try it without a space and see if that works too.
Hey @JoshPlunkett I've done the CLI import, I've enabled all the boxes you had, and sourced the bestiary to the bestiary the CLI brought in. However, I am only getting SRD creatures (and nothing when I disable the SRD option). I've tried adding the statblock inline property and gotten no results. Any idea what I could be missing? Great vids, I've made a ton of progress off what you've shown.
Hi Josh. You mentioned Vampire The Masquerade in the video, but I couldn't see what you were referring to? Do you have any links to Vampire 5e resources for Obsidian? Finding that the userbase is a bit thin on the ground!
If you join the obsidian ttrpg discord. There's a post dedicated to VtM. There aren't many active users although it's really up to the community to change that. There's a nice v20 statblock shared in there. No idea how compatible that is with 5e but might make a good foundation to build on.
this looks insanely cool and useful, but also looks about as time consuming as a second full-time job to actually set it up as in-depth as you have. Hopefully it's a bit easier than that, but I'll def have to check it out at some point soon
Honestly I've tried so many tools and I've never found anything even remotely close to the speed I can set this up. Yes it took a bit to learn how I wanted it but now that I'm there I can have a new vault setup for a game system with all mechanics, plugins, themes, settings ready to go in about.... probably an hour tops. Realistically 30 minutes these days because I have a process preprepared. This generally includes a basic copy of the adventure I plan to run. Lots of people just start with my Patreon vault which gives a ttrpg foundation to build on. I spend most of my time these days actually working on the session planning. I could not say that when I used Realm Works.
Hello .. I love those plugin like the statblock one .. but is théière a way to translate them in French ? Cause playing all time in English with the stats in English is to difficult for me
Josh - just a FYI. in a tarot reading, cards can be upside down and indicate a reverse of the standard meaning. this is simplified, but correct for most types of tarot
Greetings! I have a problem. I want to purchase your Patreon subscription, but it is blocked in my country. Is there any other way to buy Obsidian TTRPG Vault?
So, newbie here but i have tried all day to get the dm screen alive in the patreon vault. ik managed to add sources but i'm lost when it comes to the config file. It keeps saying that the config file doesn't exist. But i can't get it to work. Any tips?
This is actually excellent advice for anyone using AI to enhance their game, or run a solo game. The markdown files it stores can be directly uploaded to ChatGPT now to have it analyze your world and aid you in world-building. I've created a GPT specifically for probing my own notes, and can ask ChatGPT questions about my own world.
Oh my god. I've never been a dungeon master or even played frp. But I can't tell you how excited I was when I saw this video. It seems to contain very valuable uses and ideas not only for frp but even for academic use. I decided to become a dm just because of this video and I'm jumping into the rabbit hole. I hope I can handle it, it looks a bit complicated
Depends on the speed of your internet. They also made a change where images were moved to their own repo which significantly reduced the size of the initial download.
Literally just went to your site to start a solo TTRPG vault, then this video drops! My thoughts as someone who's watched the video (haven't tried the tool yet): = The simpler dice roller is handy if you are constantly rolling on tables. = This sounds convenient for those games with a lot of tables (Iron Valley and Ironsworn are what comes to mind immediately, but also I might try Blackoath Entertainment's games with this!). = I hate tracking things with paper and pen (which you do a fair bit of in Dead Belt). So those inline trackers look nice. = The tarot/card tool has its uses. The tarot tool only has major arcana, but while you can substitute the minor arcana with the card tool, you will still be a suit card short. It bugs me, but I know some people aren't disturbed by that. You cannot use the playing card tool for anything running on Carta (deck.of.cards is the tool for that). But the playing card tool will be good for those games where you constantly generate numbers using playing cards, like Fox Curio's Floating Bookshop. TL;DR does what it says on the box, just like this video said.
Wow I mean... Wow. What are the odds? I just started getting into solo roleplaying, today found your videos on obsidian and now I find you've even done a video on solo plugin? Lucky me
This one hasn't gotten as much love, but I'll say thank you for all that you do, became a Patron, enjoying the vault and finishing it off with the CLI content!
I am having an issue where I can see the character sheet just fine, but if I login using my Twitch account, then the character sheet only shows up for a moment and then the whole frame goes completely grey. Any ideas why this might be?
Now that's a new one. I'd be having a look through the Custom Frames github site. Search the open and closed issues to see if anyone has experienced it before and hopefully there's a solution.
@@JoshPlunkett do i need to do them One by One? I have a token image folder, the token imagem have the same exact name as the Monster, i can link them One by One by editing the Monster Card. Is there another way?
Hello there! I just started out using Obsidian and your tutorials have been a blessing. So I got your vault from the patreon aswell. At the moment I'm playing around with it a bit to try to understand more and more but I stumbled across a few things I dont understand whilst trying to set up my own vault with some of that content. These might be some stupid questions but maybe you would be so kind to enlighten me :D 1. In your vault when you use the button for a new Player (on the GM Board) the file is created without an icon. If moved into the 1-Party folder (or after some time, I am not sure) the icon updates automatically for that file. Where can I customize/configure or set this? It does not seem to be in the template if I am not mistaken 2. On the Player Views/ Tables in the colums there's an error aswell: "[MB_EXPRESSION] "failed to evaluate expression" caused by error "Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'toLowerCase')"" Is there a fix for it? Keep it up!
1. I use the Supercharged Links plugin to set the note icons. You can change the icons in the Style Settings plugin. I have a video on it so recommend you give that a watch. 2. Would need more detail on this. Join the community ttrpg discord and raise a post with screenshots of the output and code so we can see whats going on.
A cool little tool - that might bring me back to Obsidian for a bit (have tinkered with it on and off -- but I am google drive main) -- the inline stuff did say 'on an otherwise clear line' or such - so tables weren't going to work - but seems more than ok, -- thanks for highlighting it
If you open Automator in the Applications folder, you can create a script file that can run the final Terminal command, as needed. I don't have the tutorial link in front of me, but it wasn't hard to find.
18:35 - right clicking attachments folder doesnt bring up an option to make it an attachments folder automatically 6-13-2024, instead its in the settings files and links - default location for new attachments, then choose options and/or decide on the folder.
The getting started page here might also be of help. www.Obsidianttrpgtutorials.com I think people are scared initially of Markdown simply because it's different. It's so easy and quick to use though once you know the basics.
Not often. I will update the installed.plugins every couple of weeks but the installed plugins and config don't change. I'm very stable in what I use these days.
hi, i was trying to setup the fantasy statblocks and got very confuse with the initiatve tracker cz i can't make it link together and it seems like its because i dont have an "Statblock" property available, do u know anything about this problem?
No, I cant legally share my own vault. I do have a foundation vault that is setup the same way with plugins, templates, themes etc. You just need to add your own content to it. It's available to my Patreons.
