In this video we look at a super efficient way to create notes for DnD 5e using the SRD content. Using the TTRPG CLI tool, we automatically create notes for monsters, spells, items, rules, basically the mechanical elements required to play DnD 5e. This sets your vault up in a way that allows you to link to mechanics as you document your world or campaign reducing the need to use physical books at the table.

Thanks Josh, I watch all your videos and have been a patreon member for a few months now. The first time I saw obsidian used for ttrpg's I knew I wanted to make the change from onenote. Then I downloaded Obsidian and had no idea what was going on and quickly I gave that up. Then came the day that Microsoft locked me out of my notes on game day, I was caught with my pants down as my players walked in the door. I have been running games for 20+ years so I managed that night. After that session I began the transition so that would never happen to me again. Your videos helped my transition from OneNote to Obsidian without them I would not be where I am now with it. The features and functionality of Obsidian make my previous OneNote setup seem like a joke. I just wanted to thank you personally for making not only mine but my players game experience so much better. And also a big thanks to everyone in the Obsidian TTRPG Discord, what a great community I am glad to be part of.

Honestly, you single highhandedly converted me to obsidian and I use it for pretty much everything now. Your tutorials are such a godsend. I think it's great that the old generation of TTRPGers are leaving behind generational knowledge for the newbies. I use Talespire with my group and Talespires bookmark feature can be hyperlinked into obsidian. So now my Syrinscape, digital board, session notes and searches are all done in Obsidian.

Thanks for this video, I'm currently manually copying all of my sources.... and at present, Im going to continue to. This process looks way more complicated and into the weeds than I want to get with Obsidian at present. But it's nice to know that when the day inevitably comes when I want to get this far deep, your guide is easy to follow and understand. Been lurking and watching your vids for a while now and I like that you get straight to the meat of things.

I must admit I was exactly the same. I avoided the cli process because it scared me. I wish I had tackled it sooner. The time saved is significant giving me more time to focus on actual prep.

The Github repo was split. All the images were moved to their own repo so yeah it takes a few seconds now for the text content but you also need to clone the image repo separately. Can we combine this with the "Initiative Tracker" plugin? So far, I got it to work with the SRD content from the "Fantasy Statblocks" plugins. Any encounter I create links to the correct monster statblock as long as I use the built-in ones. Now that I followed this tutorial, I have a great compendium with a bestiary folder including my PHB, MM and DMG monsters. Is there a way to make the "Initiative Tracker" link to these entries as well when we write them inside the "Encounter" block?

Absolutely. Check my latest video on changing templates. There are 5e templates.inclided that will convert to using fantasy statblock statblocks which also include buttons for triggering the monster in initiative tracker.

Hey, id actually followed the text document on your website to set this all up, seems to all be working... however, I then followed the steps to set up your DM Screen. A lot of it works, some of it doesnt.. everything in the ability scores section for instance opens up a blank link titled "08-using-ability-scores". Was that supposed to link to the CLI or was that something else you had set up? Had to come find this video to ask in a relevant context.

You need to include the phb as a book not just in the from section. Watch the video on cli config files.

@@JoshPlunkett Yeah, so the problem seems to bewith 5etools using some external links with https, so yes it falls under the 'external images' category. However, I didn't get how I can set the config tool to correct that. Like, I already have indexed all the books I wanted, so if I follow the config guide, do I still type in all the 'sources', 'adventures', 'books' etc? Wouldn't that just redownload everything? or how do I do it exactly?

Is there a way to get the content in other languages? I've been manually importing most of the data I need because I want it in spanish, but I'm torn between the time I can save with this process and having parts of my vault in another language

How much space is the clone going to take up on my hard drive? I’m using a surface pro and only have around 80gb free

Mine is sitting at 12Gb currently. Try add this to the command line though. It will significantly reduce the size apparently. --depth 1

Thank you for the reply. I did the import successfully but noticed it doesn’t include information from several books I own(MM, PHB, TCE). Perhaps I did something incorrectly, or is there another way to get those sources?

was there a change in the licensing or something? When i converted the files i only ended up with 309 spell files, not 319.

Not something I've heard about. Maybe the data source was changed. Might be some spells with the wrong tags.

@@JoshPlunkett They did discontinue mirror 1 and moved everything to mirror 2, however, I had the same thing. Fewer files. Besides that, though, I was still able to follow your tutorial without any issues. Just a minor little discrepancy there that I was curious about.

@@cuboos I'm having the same issue with fewer files downloading than shown in the webpage and video. Nearly all categories have 10-50% fewer, most notably only 4 of the races downloaded.

When following the "run CLI" step I made sure I was in the bin folder and ran the command. It gives me an error though: The current machine does not support all of the following CPU features that are required by the image: [CX8, CMOV, FXSR, MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSSE3, SSE4_1, SSE4_2, POPCNT, LZCNT, AVX, AVX2, BMI1, BMI2, FMA]. Please rebuild the executable with an appropriate setting of the -march option. any ideas?

From memory this was resolved. Hopefully it was you we were speaking to in the Discord. This was an OS issue and the resolution was to use the Java version of the CLI tool.

@viniciuslima8114 this is a compatibility issue with your pc. The resolution is to use another computer or to try an alternative method. The official doco has instructions for the Java method for example.

Is it normal that the download took 2 seconds instead of an hour?

Depends on the speed of your internet. They also made a change where images were moved to their own repo which significantly reduced the size of the initial download.
