My first official OT Q&A! Leave me comments for the next one down below :) Thanks for watching!!
Questions:
1. What prerequisites should you take in high school/college to prepare for OT school?
2. Why did I choose “home health” and pediatrics?
3. Are there online programs for students in the healthcare field?
4. Do you find it hard to pass the OT exam?
5. Would someone who is just starting college now get a masters or doctorate in OT?
6. Will OTs make more money once it’s a doctorate degree?
7. What college did I go to?
8. What was my undergraduate degree in?
9. What do you think of the job market for OT VS. OTAs?
10. Does age matter when applying to OT school?
11. Do you have to work in a clinic or hospital before doing early intervention or home health?
12. What is the salary of a new OT grad?

Hi! Thanks for making this video. With regards to the age issue, I just finished my undergrad pre reqs and am enrolled in the MSOT program at my college. I turned 50 this spring. I love the program and field of occupational therapy! Don’t allow age be too much of a factor! There will always be a juggling act of personal life vs coursework and field work but listen to your heart. Thanks again for your video!

Hi, Chris, I just saw your post and got encouraged. I am 49, quit my career in business, finishing my prereqs this year and planning to go to OT school in spring, however, have a lot of anxiety about difference in age with other students in the program, also, will I have enough time to pay off the loans, etc.

I'm starting a 13 month class due to covid 19 , this will be my second career, I worked in Respirstory for 23 years, really got burned out on the long hours of shifts and the tremendous amount of work that is given to a therapist. I love the hours that OT works and the salary is better than Rts. Thank you.

I’ve always wanted to be an elementary school teacher, but after working as an E.A I’m starting to reconsider as there’s not a ton of opportunities for leadership, there’s so much red tape..etc..I’ve looked at OT before and have always been really excited by the idea. I’m super passionate about inclusion (i have a background supporting adults and children with disabilities) and I love that being an OT allows for so much creativity and flexibility while helping people be included and fully enriched in their environments. Your videos have really been giving me a great insight into the career and I’m leaning more and more towards it with each video 😊

There can be a lot of red tape with OT as well but you may not mind as much since you will be doing something you are passionate about which includes helping those with disabilities. And you could always be a school therapist and promote inclusion in that environment.

Hi Arwen! This video was super informational!! I would be interested in learning more about the early intervention setting as well as working in the NICU. Do you know if you need specific training? Or how common jobs in these settings are? Also! I was wondering if you entered OT school immediately after graduating undergrad, or if you took some time off? Thanks!!!!
@arwensayso.k.4809
@arwensayso.k.4809 5 лет назад
1. The NICU is a very difficult setting to start working in due to its sensitive nature. You will need extensive pediatric experience or NICU experience in school. Early intervention is easier and does not require previous experience, there are not as many job opportunities. 2. I graduated in December and started OT the next summer. So I had about 4-5 months off. I planned my wedding and got married during that time 😊

@lyndawilliams4570
@lyndawilliams4570 2 года назад
You need to decide between both professions to determine what you’ll be happy doing for the rest of your life. They are both rewarding but have distinct differences that you need to understand to properly make a decision. I chose OT and absolutely love it - but that’s me. Also OTs are going to an entry level Doctoral degree just like PTs. (no one considers you advanced with that degree - it takes time, acquiring advanced level skills with specialty certifications and or participation in research with published work. The salary differences between the 2 are minimal in my opinion. Choose what will make you happiest in the long term.

I got my major in Kinesiology with emphasis in Pre-PT and a minor in Psychology. My undergrad school didn't offer a medical terminology course, do you know how I could fulfill that pre requisite so that it could still qualify as a transferable credit?
@arwensayso.k.4809
@arwensayso.k.4809 4 года назад
I had to take some of my prerequisite courses at the local community college 1. Because it was cheaper and 2. Because the larger university did not offer certain courses. I actually ended up taking this exact course at the community college and at 1 point I was going to 3 different campuses to get all my prerequisites. You may also look into online courses through other schools. Most of the credits should be transferable as long as it is an accredited school. Hope this helps!

@arwensayso.k.4809
@arwensayso.k.4809 4 года назад
Well I’m biased since I have my undergraduate degree in psychology. But I personally think psychology courses provide a better foundation for research (reading and dissecting information, analyzing, and critical thinking, etc.) as well as understanding the social, psychological, and complexities of individuals which leads to unique clinical reasoning skills and compassion as a therapist. (but that’s a biased opinion as I have no experience with the other degree) I would suggest looking at the actual classes and course work that would be required for each degree and see which classes sound more interesting to you. I believe the Health science degree would allow more flexibility if for some reason you choose not to apply or do not get into OT school.

I think it will depend on the schools you're applying to. Most programs may have already transitioned to the OTD program by that time. I get this question A LOT. And that is an option. But in my honest opinion I believe it would be very difficult to work as an OTA while going to OT school, as OT school is a full-time job. If you want to work as an OTA for a few years to gain experience prior to OT school and then possibly work part time while in the program that may work, but you would definitely be pushing yourself hard. You may be able to find an OTA to OT bridge program but I am not sure if they will continue those after the degree changes to Doctorate.
