OCD - OCPD Rage, Anger, & Frustration | Is the Anger Different?

This video answers the question: What is the frustration anger or rage we see associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD). First, it's important understand that these are different disorders. OCD has obsessions (intrusive thoughts) and compulsions (behaviors that are meant to satisfy the anxiety) created by the obsessions. Usually people with OCD have good insight, but not always, and we consider the behaviors in general to be ego-dystonic. Obsessive compulsive personality disorder is a Cluster C personality disorder, which is the same cluster as avoidant and dependent personality disorders. With OCPD, we see someone who's perfectionistic, they don't like to delegate responsibilities to someone unless that person can do it exactly as prescribed, a miserly spending style, and a restricted range of emotion. We consider the characteristics with OCPD to be ego-syntonic.

The lack of demonstrating empathy point was spot on. I am extremely empathetic, as many in my life have pointed out to me. But when I’m triggered or having an anger attack, I become emotionally distant and cold. I have no regard at that point for other’s feelings which is completely out of my character.

I have been diangonsed with OCD since very young....my anger is linked to the inability to let go..its like I get stuck and no matter how much I try to shake it up..very often if I get mad about something I get fixcated on it for HOURS..I can literally talk about the same topic for hours and hours. Its so hard to want to move on from a topic and your mind is working against and is on stuck!

i found it interesting thank u, i have ocpd and i often find my anger showing up when i feel the impulse to control other people, i have lots and lots of empathy to the point where it's intense and aggravating but because that's my experience and whats normal to me i boil with frustration when others arent showing empathy, towards me or another, how appropriate my own way of thinking and responding seems to me results in feeling like other people have a wrong way of thinking, and i jump to false equivalencies such as if i can do such and such why wont everybody else do it as well, so ironically my empathy fails when it comes to understanding the different levels and styles of empathy that others have

I have both autism and treated OCPD, and many times I found that the anger was a simmering anger at others in general. I was wearing a tight straitjacket, and was so very angry why others frolicked around without one. This anger bubbled to the surface when my myriad rules were broken-I was a miserable wretch.

This is the first of your videos I've viewed and it was extremely helpful. I'm currently and independently studying this disorder due to a loved one of mine demonstrating every fundamental and textbook characteristic of OCPD. Yet, throughout the majority of the academic and professional material I've covered so far; little to no emphasis on the components of anger and "demonstrating a lack of empathy" as you put it has been given an in-depth explanation. I will continue watching your informative and helpful channel because of this video.

Dr. Grande, could you make a video of OCPD mother’s? I grew up with an OCPD mother… And it was hell. To this day, my sister and I struggle with all the trauma from the hostile environment we lived in. We are doing better, but I don’t see much information on parents with OCPD like I do with narcissism.

Thank you for including these citations. I hope that there is more research into the Cluster C personality disorders conducted in the future. I understand why there is a far smaller patient pool to extrapolate from in the instance of OCPD, especially, but I really feel that it would be valuable (in addition to hopefully destigmatizing mental illness in general) if both critical thinking skills and basic psychology were added to school curricula in the near future. The sooner the better, is my humble opinion.

I love the way your videos explain the facts behind everything. I love learning about the mental health disorders that I deal with. It's so frustrating that all of these disorders are so closely related. I feel like if you have one mental health issue you can see your symptoms and behaviors in many disorders whether you meet all the criteria or not. I obsess about knowing what I have and wanting to know the facts. It makes it hard when I feel like I have more than what I've been diagnosed with. I relate so much to everything you have said and it's hard for my brain to separate what I know is wrong with me and what I think is wrong with me.

Thank you for this it was very informative. I'm only recently realising that I might have OCPD (along with either SzPD or Asperger's), so it was very interesting to hear an explanation of these 'Anger Attacks'. With my own attacks I'm not the type to blow my lid (probably because I was always told it was wrong to express anger, and of course I'm a stickler for the rules!!) but I will bottle it up an internalise my anger, and its only when I'm alone that I am able to vent out my frustrations in a very sweary arm flailing rage as I yell at myself (actually a manifested a mental image of the person that has scorned me). Sometimes people catch me venting and it is deeply embarrassing for me because I must look a right nutter to them!

This is so informative, I have panic attacks and anger attacks, my wheely bin gets a kicking at least once a year. Usually because something I can't control has happened, like someone I love is dying. But after I've got it out I'm exhausted and sleep, then it's over. My meltdowns are different, they are triggered with over stimulation, too much information and outside stimulation. And therefore I avoid triggers, I'm loving this lockdown. I've never been happier. Other than the fear of contracting this virus I'm in heaven.

This interesting in trying to understand my manager's probable OCPD/Narcissism. It is like you aren't allowed to be alive around him. He triangulated himself around my entire career, devalued me, and treats me like an entry level employee. I have 30 years of experience in my field, and my clients and colleagues all spoke highly of my work. He also did very abusive things, like called me multiple times in the first week of class to lecture me about "checking in", even though he approved the class time, and my part-time degree progress hadn't been a problem with two previous managers. I ended up dropping out from stress of working with him, and when I mentioned returning a few years later, he said "You don't need a degree." He's definitely on the OCD spectrum, and one of his old college buddies said he knew him when he was diagnosed OCD, but the vindictiveness, denial, gaslighting, and word salad all seem more narcissistic. I'm trying to find another job, even though I worked here 15 years before this guy was hired. It's weird. Grey Rocking seems to at least keep from from having anything to readily attack.

Dr Grande, I've got most of the symptom criteria for BPD, and my gf has OCPD. You can probably imagine some of the conflict involved; but interestingly she has provided me with much needed structure. I liked this video because the way you articulated the symptoms of OCPD added a bit more clarity to my understanding of the disorder. I wonder if it's normal for those with ocpd to have issues with abstract thinking ? It seems like she sacrifices attention to detail for generalizations. i want to get her into therapy but she doesn't see any value in ideas, only actions.

@mardasman428
@mardasman428 Год назад
I had that with my ex-girlfriend too, who has at least some OCPD features. I avoided discussing politics with her because of it, as she was often venting her frustrations there and she tended to have a rather black-and-white view of things, chastising me for having differing opinions. I walked on eggshells there and was scared to disagree with her on that or on other things. It wasn't helping that I usually knew more about these issues, as she was a kindergarten teacher (who had university education, but on how to approach children's education and not politics, so it really wasn't her field of expertise), and I had a degree in political science and did my masters back then. In the end my willingness to at least say a bit about these topics, even if I was very cautious to disagree with her, meant that she called me a mansplainer when she ended up breaking up with me. I can also remember her revenge fantasies about people that in her view had wronged her. That also happened in politics, where her self-professed solutions to some problems were literally torture and violence. It scared me and really increased my level of relationship anxiety, and when I was having a panic attack when she wanted to move in with me, she got angry again, even if she never hurt me physically or did the things she sometimes talked about.

My little voice in my head said my mother would die if I didn’t do the things, (touching counting etc etc) I figured it was caused from seeing my mom abused when I was young. You need to get out of that relationship as fast as you can, this is a mother of two young adults (twins) speaking from experience, they are difficult! Collaborating and team work is not something they are flexible (nor even think along those lines)! The fact that you don’t feel like you have the freedom to talk about important matters or the OCPD thing is a hallmark for where your future is headed. I know I’m married to someone whom I didn’t know was obstinate (OCPD like behaviors) when it came time to talk about important issues or concerns within our marriage or family! It’s caused anxiousness attachment styles, which I’m getting over.

So clear. So well explained. Though.. What strategies can we use to calm down such a person when their need to control and anxiety levels are peeking? I wanted to get it right so bad because I had never been able to braid my hair before. I would mess up and start again, I would mess up and start again. Well, my mother had come home from work, and she was trying to get my door open to talk to me, and I instantly started getting really irritable. I told her “mom please go away. I don’t want to get mad at you. I’m doing my hair. I don’t want to mess up.” She kept banging on my door to open it and I started getting really mad at her. Does this seem like OCD to you? Why does it seem as though there is hardly any research out there on treatment for ocpd? So much less info out there than ocd. Is ERP therapy effective for treating ocpd ?

Are we talking angry or violent?
@petersalt

I am OC and demonstrate a lack of empathy but I have gone through Radical Openness therapy and it has helped a bit better than regular DBT. I still have ager attacks but less often. I do find that the distance between is greater but I do tend explode with a bit more intensity as if it was building up. I don't like having these and I want it to stop. I am trying most of the tactics but sometimes I lose control. I saved my head in my last one out of anger. I don't want to harm others or objects so I push myself. Does anyone here have tactics that work for them that might help one get out of an attack mode?

All you have to do is go into the workplace to know that people who demonstrate the controlling and dominating symptoms of ocpd as being the most prevalent disorder. It can cause healthy individuals to suffer.

How can they be co-morbid if one is ego-syntonic and the other is ego-dystonic?
@DrGrande
@DrGrande 5 лет назад
The ego-syntonic and ego-dsytonic characteristics are not symptom criteria for either disorder. Someone could meet the full criteria for both disorders and be either ego-syntonic or ego-dsytonic.

That's certainly one of the symptoms of OCD and OCPD, but they would need to have more than just that one symptom. It could also be mysophobia, (fear of germs/contamination), which can be a part of OCD or standalone. Or, they could just be a little bit 'anal', but not meet enough criteria for any disorder. If you feel you know each other well enough, you could try broaching the topic, but I wouldn't recommend that unless you're pretty close. I hope some of this helps.

I live with a partner who has recently diagnosed with COPD. Do you have any advice for partners going through this I am myself undiagnosed with severe depression and low self-esteem and it's extremely hard for me to deal with my partner we are currently separated.

My girlfriend knows she has OCD but I don't think she knows she has OCPD. She needs things in order and everything needs to be planned. She also mentioned she used to be a perfectionist. Hmmm... How do I go about bringing up OCPD to better our relationship and conflict?

Having worked in engineering I've met a number of individuals who were cold and sometimes manipulative (somewhat like a diagnosed sociopath whom I know) but they lacked the darker behaviors of a sociopath and their motivations seamed different. It's my opinion that this video just cleared up what exactly I'm dealing with when interacting with these individuals.

Would OCPD be more kindly referred to as "Type A Personality"? People don't talk about Type A's any more. I'm guessing because it was a pseudo-scientific term.

Nope, that’s exactly what my husband does. Which is kind of him though, because I often still mistakenly think he’s angry at me when actually it’s always about something else. I’m just overly reactive to those things because I think my mom may also suffer from the same thing and it’s triggering sometimes, depending on the severity.

Seeing the way people in these comments feel about the individuals in their lives that have OCPD, as someone who suspects myself of it, is extremely painful... I don't want to be like this either :( I understand that your experiences are your experiences, and you have every right to feel upset by upsetting behavior, but please keep in mind that people may read what you say. And venting about how much you can't stand the people in your life who have it is very, deeply, hurtful. I also suspect myself of ASD and people frequently talk about how terrible that is to "deal with". It really does make you feel like you are hopeless.

Today I had severely blasted on my wife ,with harshest of the words of threatening for physical punishment , despite don't want to go that far , it happened becz I was continuously thinking of her statement for 3 days , which hurted my ego infront of my in-laws about our personal money matters , she cried and told all to her siblings , which I never imagined can happen ,now it's a big trouble for me personally and socially , I can't face my in-laws now ,all respect I got in 6.5 yrs of marriage has gone , I can't tell others about the real cause of the problem , I had been suffering from this pattern for 10 to 15 yrs , I was not aware of it , Corona had dumped me financially ,lost job and many things , All my frustrations anger work stress hurts comes out with anger
