WARNING: This film discusses the topic of OCD. Viewer discretion is advised.
This feature documentary explores the daily lives of individuals living with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), a misunderstood anxiety disorder characterized by intrusive thoughts, nagging fears and ritualistic behaviour. From the outside, its sufferers have no physical disabilities and have every appearance of being as functional as the next person. But inside, a daily war is waged for survival.
Directed by David Hoffert & Mark Pancer - 2001 - 70 min

Finally a realistic showing of OCD! It's not all hand washing and arranging pictures. Its horrible HORRIBLE thoughts and life altering compulsions.

+Larilee Yes, this documentary is so much more realistic and helpful than most I have seen on the subject! The people that made it deserve a praise. (Great job!) OCD is sometimes portrayed and understood as either something like a little quirk that you just simply live with (there are plenty of cruel shows on tv created just for amusement that should stop), or a mental illness that makes the person completely crazy and unaware of his state. It actually implies so much inner conflict and struggle. Seeing the cases of Andrew and Chris, who are just children, really underlined the cruel face of this disorder. And I just realized that I probably had a child with something similar to OCD in a class that I taught and had no clue. It might have made a difference if I had seen this doc two years ago. It will help the future, though.

@lesxley2039

I had the same experience. It terrified me and being religious, in my experience, made it 10x worse because I thought that I would go to hell for thinking these unspeakable thoughts. I felt like a monster and hated myself at a very young age. It wasn't until years later that i realized: I AM NOT MY THOUGHTS. Don't get me wrong, I still have these thoughts everyday but it definitely doesn't affect me as severely as before because I know my thoughts are just thoughts. What sucks the most, though, is that I never even knew I had OCD until I saw this Dr. Phil special on TV and by that time I had already overcome the worst of my OCD on my own. I remember crying because the girl on there was so similar to me in her obsessions and rituals; I finally found the answer to all my questions and discovered I wasn't the only one. It would have been nice if the reality of OCD was taught in schools or just known in general, not just the "neat freak" version we hear about so much today. II feel like I could have avoided all the self-loathing and depression if I had only knew what disorder I had. Anyway, sorry for the rant. I just don't really get to talk about this much lol. But I hope you've become better at controlling your inner demons and trust me when I say you're not the only one. I hope my story made you feel not so alone. (feel free to vent if you want :) )

I don't know if this would work for you but it worked for me. I always get different thoughts after i been with one for a few weeks. Well I promised myself that if my next thought would go on in my head for longer then 15 minutes I would have to believe in it and never change it back and that stopped me. That might not work for everybody but then again my OCD is very mild.

+Joseph Bertini I have no clue what your thoughts are, but I can totally relate. It started when I was a kid with washing my hans etc, but now that I'm older it has taken a hard turn.. First I couldn't bare arguing with people, cause the thought of being wrong made me examine every single argument in depths-it hardly made me smarter, lol. And as of recently, it's revolved around sexuality. Tho I know for a fact that I'm straight, have always been straight and can't stand the thought of the same sex. I'm compelled to believe that I'm somehow attracted to men. I have examined the truth. I even went as far as to look up gay fucking porn.. And time after time, I have proven not to be gay. But for some reason, it still sticks with me..

Yes. I didn’t even know I had it because I thought OCD was just obsessed with being sanitary from the way it was portrayed. For me in early childhood, I kept doing my hair until it was “flat” otherwise the feeling I get when I didn’t drove me crazy. My bed had to be neat and no wrinkles on it cause I don’t know, my shoes had to be the same pressure when tied, I couldn’t wear a lot of certain clothing because there was something about it that just made me think I can’t wear this because I would get that feeling. I honestly have so much more compulsions I can’t write out, luckily some of the behaviors that made my life hell went away by 12. I still have many of these compulsions but none that interferes with my everyday living. I wish I knew I had it back then because growing up was hell, I thought I was the only kid in the world that was that strange, my parents didn’t/still don’t know either, they yelled at me and had reason to because I would spend so much time on the obsession. I still have the unwanted thoughts which is horrible and it makes me feel like a horrible person. When I was visiting my grandma, a thought came in my mind to push her. Obviously I wasn’t going to do it but I hate it. Other ones are when I’m in public, a thought rushes into my mind of me doing something weird in public and I have to push it out of my mind.

I have had OCD since I was a child.I wasn't officially diagnosed with it until I was 12 and put on prozac. I am now 32 and can safely say that it has fucked up my life beyond description. I have dealt with it through various ways, including taking illicit drugs, which only made the problem worse(my fault). I have had depression also, as a nice little added bonus that only makes things tougher. The hardest part to deal with is the loneliness that comes along with suffering like this. People, despite their "good intentions" are often not very understanding or sympathetic for that matter, but I often remind myself that any of these people, whether they be tough jock types, bullies, etc wouldn't be able to cope dealing with this shit for more than a few weeks, let alone twenty plus years. The mentally ill, whatever the problem are the true warriors and heroes in life, because they are dealing with stuff that most people couldn't even conjour up in their wildest dreams.

Used to think God would be pissed off at me if I had certain thoughts, but I could not stop them. And no, it's not helping people by frightening them into religion. So stop scaring the shit out of people! It certainly had it's damaging effects on me. I'm still semi-religious. But only praying will not help you in dire situations. +Lonely Hearts Club That must be really hard for you, I'm sorry to hear that your parents aren't as supportive as you would like and need them to be. I work as a psychologist in a clinic for anxiety disorders and with therapy resistant patients that come to our clinic as their last option. Most people feel unable to continue a normal life and cannot hold a job or complete their education. OCD can be very serious and as a very big impact on your life. People often don't seem to realize the importance of a good support system. You might want to look into local options on psycho education for your parents. I hope you can get some good support and treatment that will help you cope with your OCD. Good luck and stay strong!

Hey! I know the feeling, everyone just thinks you can turn off a switch and let it be gone, and they have no idea how much of your time it controls, I am just now getting into therapy after desperately looking for answers for years, you can do it too! You are not alone, please join a support group and get help from others like myself...it will get better you have to tell ocd who is boss!

I agree that this, like many other OCD documentaries and papers, focuses too much on the orderly side of OCD. Far too many times, when people find out I have it, they say something along the lines of 'but your room is a mess...'. It's such a misunderstood illness, and there are plenty sufferers that DO fear contamination, but society doesn't see the other aspects. For the record, I'm lucky in the sense that I can function, but the 'horrible thoughts' part of the disease is by far the worst part for me. These thoughts make sufferers think of things like pushing a little old lady in front of a train, choking a kitten, or even (in the case of ROCD), leaving your significant other when you know you love them. These are obviously not things that OCD sufferers would even begin to do, but the images are so clear and jarring, that we feel compelled to act on our compulsions. In other words, washing hands, counting, checking switches, etc., are only the visible part, the face, of the disease. What outsiders don't see are our reasons for our silly actions. 'If you don't step on every crack, your sister will be hit by a car', that's what we constantly battle. OCD being misunderstood also hurts the people who live with it every day. I'm lucky enough to have a sense of humor about it, but most people with the disease aren't laughing when someone tells them to hurry up and that they're being ridiculous. We know we are. But tapping every hinge on the front door is going to make the current image subside. I don't get offended easily, but I definitely feel annoyed when someone tries to be cute about 'having an OCD moment'. Too many times have I overheard, "I know, it's color coordinated because I'm totally OCD" or "I'm so OCD about my desk being neat". It's not their fault that they don't know the disease, it's just frustrating to constantly be misunderstood. These people have no idea how hard it is to fight the disease daily. I can't imagine having OCD as badly as the people on this film, since I struggle with my far more mild version. I feel so bad for them and wish them the best in finding their magical pill balance (now THAT's another journey...).

I completely understand what you are saying. Fortunately I have gotten to a point where I can see these ridiculously ignorant and insensitive comments for what they are, and not react. But I agree it is beyond frustrating. However, honestly, you really won't get them to understand what it's like to have thoughts and images in your head constantly that you have to neutralise and pay attention to stopping you from even being able to think clearly. Just take pride in the fact that a lot of these people wouldn't last a week dealing with this shit, and congratulate yourself for your own strength and resilience. That may sound fucked up, but honestly, after 24 years now of this hellish condition, I take my hat off to myself for still being here, even if no one else will! And to anyone else dealing with OCD too.

Kathy Maykut holy s**t that "your room is a mess thing" drives me absolutely insane. plus the whole "so what" thing. for example, i have an obsessions regarding everything "clean-ness". one day my parents put my shirts on the living room table so i got mad, cause my shirts being there meant i had to clean them in some way that i wont describe because this comment is way to long. long story short, i told them that i dont want my shirts on that table, and they were like "so what? what could possibly happen?"

I felt to kill myself many times for having such kind of life... plus i used to cry a lot.... But since I started to ignore my thoughts and doing right opposite of it - no matter what !! .... OCD seems terrible. Our neighbor has it. She has issues when she tries to leave her house. She has to pull on her door several times; then other times she will get all the way to her car and have to come back in re-open her door walk around her apt. then shut the door again. I've seen days when she has made several trips to her car and back. She's a great neighbor though. :)

I suffered from OCD to the extreme when I was younger but seemed to had gotten better for a few years but I’ve noticed a few weeks ago that I’ve been doing “rituals” like I used to. Like forcing myself to breathe a certain way, touching things two or three times to make sure I really felt it, and a lot of perfectionism too. It’s making me sad since I thought I beat this a while ago :( hopefully I get better

I have really severe OCD, and it's getting out of hand lately. Most of the time I do my best to pretend it doesn't exist, because acknowledging the thoughts seems to give them greater power, but if I'm posting online about OCD, you know I'm just a quirk or two away from full-on dementia (in the words of Elaine Benes). The egodystonic thoughts of doing things you'd throw up over if you had to read about them are absolutely debilitating. I know it's all nonsense on some level, but when the anxiety ratchets up really high I start to lose even that comfort and it's like the world is converted into the face of the Joker from Batman laughing at me, or like an episode of the Twilight Zone - I'm not sure anymore that it IS nonsense. You start to worry that everyone around you is looking at you like you've already done the most repulsive things imaginable, and then you start to even question your memory - like what if you actually HAVE done those things, and you don't remember it?

I've had OCD since I was 12. Wasn't diagnosed until 18 due to my parents thinking it was just a phase I'd grow out of. Had to take myself in for therapy at 18 as I was barely functional, dropped out of school, unemployed and practically suicidal. Been on meds on and off for past 20 years. It does still get very depressing even after all these years. I mean I work and have a few friends and rent my own place but I've never been able to live up to my potential and achieve what other people get to achieve. The worst thing is probably the fact that I haven't been able to develop a relationship with a significant other due to self esteem issues. I also worry about the future and how I will respond to the death of a loved one as I don't handle stress too well.

I suffer from Bipolar 1 and OCD (aren't I lucky...). If I had the opportunity to rid myself of one of those, I'd honestly rid myself of my Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Seeing Andrew cry made me cry, because I was very similar as a child. I had these awful tics. I had to breathe in through my nose, out my mouth, and hum/cough afterwards. My friends in kindergarten were embarrassed to be seen with me, and teachers would gaze at me with either concern or disgust (they thought I was doing it deliberately to be a disruption). I have very sexually disturbing thoughts about incest, have to crack my door at a 60 degree angle before I sleep, keep at least two lights on, and I have to excessively make sure nothing bad's happened to my girlfriend, because I have very disturbing thoughts and images of bad things happening to her. I sometimes get the urge to tic, and it's very sporadic. If I'm reminded of my childhood, that's when I'm tempted again. I cry myself to sleep at times because I can't make the thoughts stop. I'm on an SSRI, but sometimes that doesn't numb it. I have disturbing thoughts of harming animals, and I live in constant fear. I have horrific images in my head, and it's so isolating. I have panic attacks almost every night, because I fear contracting illnesses/diseases, as well. This is one of the worst illnesses ever. Opposed to Bipolar depression, I've had thoughts of killing myself to end it. I know that's not rational now, but I can't bear myself or my thoughts. When you have OCD, you have no control over yourself, and the thing that makes it WORSE is the fact that you're AWARE that these thoughts/actions aren't normal. It's so scary.

I know this was written 8 years ago but I hope you're doing much better. ERP helps so much so that you can function and live a normal life so there is hope for those who suffer with OCD.
