I always went to Ocean City, NJ every summer many moons ago as a child. Many years later I visited Ocean City once more in the summers of ‘20 and ‘22, and the city hadn’t changed much from when I was a child, bringing back many memories.

I've been going to OC,NJ since 1968. I like the fact that it doesn't change much from year to year. Contrast that with Atlantic City, once a glorious place that spiraled into a dump.

Our summer family vacations were always spent in Ocean City NJ. It was a dry town, family friendly.

As someone born in 1998 and who goes to OC quite a bit, this was really interesting to watch and see just how similar it seemed then as it does now. Of course there are obvious differences, but still

Omg, so many memories of Ocean City in the early 70s. That short hair blonde lady looked like one of my Mothers' friends. Is she still alive? Such a great generation! Love the music!

Our family had a parking lot and snack bar on eighth and boardwalk in 1976. We painted it red white and blue and honor of the bicentennial. Ocean City is a wonderful town growing up in Ocean City was special but a bit different of an experience from just taking a vacation there, we had to work hard in the summer and the winter . The place was a ghost town.

Awesome film! I worked at the Strand Theatre in the 70's and 80's. It's great to see the entrance as I remember it. Looking at the old boxoffice statements, I see that Bravados played there Thursday-Saturday, July 3-5, 1958. So that shot is from the July 4th weekend.

Don't know why I was so sad watching these ocean city memories. I remember so much from my childhood summers in the 60's and 70's in ocean city. I remember artwork around the Flanders pool that my family and I would make sure we looked at. My mother painted and was always anxious to see the art at the Flanders. Great footage. Thanks for sharing.

@hiresrootbeer1876

The rafts with the yellow rubber ends were made by Converse (yes, the sneaker company) and were available in green or blue canvas in the middle. Great Heavy Duty Rafts-I still have mine from about 1970! I bought it new from Bert's Beach Rentals (who rented canvas beach chairs, canvas beach umbrellas and these Converse rafts on Ocean City beaches) store at 2nd & Asbury for $29.95 + tax. P.S. You will notice on Bert's rental rafts that they have 2 strips of white paint on both sides of the canvas. The longer strip had black stencil saying "BERT'S". The shorter strip was also black stenciled with a identification number (ie. "B 257".)

Thank you for posting your wonderful childhood memories spent in Ocean City. My family spent time every summer in OC during that exact same time. This brought back some of my fondest memories as a child...even if the video is not my own family. My Dad had a camera and took hundreds of slides, but the video brings it all to life.💖

Today, Ocean City is a very popular place. I go there every year for a week and it’s awesome. It was crazy to hear that the Castaway Cove burned down 🔥 But it’s back! If you don’t go, you should go to ocean city sometime. It’s awesome!

No beach tags then - that came later. This wasn't so long ago, yet it seems so quaint. But then most home movies present an idolized view of our lives. Where are these people now, I wonder.

Sand, surf, families, and pretty women: good times! Who else recalls AM radio from that time period, featuring Yankee Maid hot dogs, Copper Kettle Fudge, and Captain Starn's restaurant? Meanwhile, down in Sea Isle City, there was a hearse with a sign that read, "The Captain Chum Is Alive!"
@hiresrootbeer1876
@hiresrootbeer1876 4 месяца назад
2 of these commercial jingles I remember vividly + 2 others. "The good treats from the happy kitchen of (clap clap) Yankee Maid." "For the best in fudge, you be the judge, try Copper Kettle Fudge..." "If you've got a passion for fashion, and you've got a craving for saving, take the wheel of your automobile, and swing on down to Ideal" (Ideal woman's clothing store in Hammonton.) And "Fralinger's Original Salt Water Taffy, on the boardwalk in Atlantic City over 80 years, salt water taffy is a treat, for old or young it can't be beat..."
@williamkurzenberger4607
@williamkurzenberger4607 4 месяца назад
@hiresrootbeer1876 Yes, you have a good memory! As I recall, there were only a few AM radio stations that we could even receive, so those jingles became somewhat embedded in our lives. Good to hear from you!

My time down there didnt start until ~1969 its funny because most memories from back in the 70's look like this older footage in my head too. I remember going to see 'The Deep' in 1977 at one of the boardwalk theaters and its hazy and yet seems clear sometimes. I wouldn't want the cars from those days today but it was better times for sure...even with the interest rates and gas crisis.

This is great stuff! Curious if you still go to OC NJ and if the houses you rented are still there as they once were?
@jonathanwilkin403
@jonathanwilkin403 6 лет назад
Yep. We go back every year. It is still the same great family atmosphere. The house at 1550 Asbury is still there. I took a picture of it last summer. Probably about half of the old houses we have rented or owned are gone. The one thing that made me angry was where the beach re-nourishment contractors knocked over the tiller from the Sindia wreck. So that great landmark is no longer on the beach, but sitting outside the library/historical museum.
@Frenite
@Frenite 5 лет назад
Jonathan Wilkin When could you no longer see the sindia on the beach? What year approximately?
@jonwilkin4977
@jonwilkin4977 5 лет назад
@@Frenite The book "Ocean City America's Greatest Family Resort" by Fred Miller says the tiller got knocked off during beach replenishment in the early 1990's. So about 25 years ago. But the ships still there so if we have a freak blowout tide like we had in February 1985 much of the top debris could come to light again.
@Frenite
@Frenite 5 лет назад
J Wilkin I had heard a rumor that some of it could be seen in 2010. This could of possibly happened during a miniature blowout tide. I have been going to Ocean City every year since 2007 and never got the chance to see it myself. I wish I could see part of it

@@festyguy7405 you re right (I know this comment is super old). My dad got 2 weeks off a year, and we loaded up in the station wagon circa 1971- 1990, and still to this day. We weren't poor, but were at the very bottom of the middle class. Rented a garage that was somewhat converted into a living space LOL. I remember those phones on the boardwalks, and construction on the streets was done with fiery oil barrels in the 70s. seems weird now.
