Thanks for putting this overview together. It looks like a great platform. My biggest concern at first glance is what happens if you have a failure with your reg or if you run out of air. If your system starts to free flow, I'm guessing you just get a lot of air and can still breath just fine but don't know if I might be wrong. If you run out of air or otherwise can't get air from your tank, it seems like this might be a problem for getting the mask off and getting to a dive buddy's backup in short order. Wondering if anyone here already has answers to this.
@SSPDIVING
@SSPDIVING 3 года назад
Hey Eric, thanks for the feedback, This reply is overdue. In the event of a reg failure, you would have to remove (or a term I prefer is "ditch") your mask. You will have a backup regulator as well as backup mask, I also carry a pony. I've never had a reg failure with a guardian *knocks on wood* but the procedure would be similar if a standard reg failed minus the mask swap. I know there are a lot of divers who don't even run a backup reg or use a backup mask, rather just run your main air and pony to a harness mounted air block with a valve. If you run out of air, you can easily swap to your pony with the turn of a valve. That's how a lot of commercial guys set it up. Hope this helps, thanks for the comment!

One other notable difference between the Spectrum and the Guardian is that the Spectrum's tempered glass is more scratch-resistant than the acrylic of the Guardian.
@SSPDIVING
@SSPDIVING 6 лет назад
I guess I left that part out! Yes, the tempered glass is far more scratch resistant than acrylic. I replace the face plate on my guardian once per year. Tempered glass however will last nearly a lifetime if cared for properly.

I would recommend scrubbing the inside of the lens with a white baking soda toothpaste thoroughly. Before each dive I used baby shampoo on the inside of the lens. Works every time.

Great video. I'm going to buy one to replace my old Ocean Reef...but I'm not sure about tinted vs clear glass. What advantage do they claim for the tinted glass?
@SSPDIVING
@SSPDIVING 6 лет назад
Ozzy Guy I've never dived the ocean reef, I hope one day soon I'll be able to try it. Personally I would stick to the clear lens. The tint was perfect during this sunny summer day when sitting on the boat waiting to hop in or when I got out of the water, seemed to be easier on my eyes when they had to readjust to the brightness. Besides that, the actual "tint" is blue. It doesn't restore any colors that may be lost at depth. The water I dive in is fairly dark and I feel my visibility was reduced even with a bright dive torch. Unless you are in 50ft+ and in sunny weather on all of your dives, I would just stay with the clear glass. There was no real advantages to it in my opinion. If you decide to, I believe you can order a tinted or clear lens directly from OTS and give it a shot yourself.
@seikibrian8641
@seikibrian8641 6 лет назад
Because the tinted glass reflects red and green light, and passes blue light, if you're diving in brown or green water it will make the environment look more "natural" or more "pleasing"; but since it reduces the total brightness a bit, if you're in dark water it will just make everything appear dimmer still. I'd say it's definitely a "special purpose" option. Handy, for example, if you're doing underwater photography/videography with a manual white-balance setting, so you can see the scene as the camera will record it.

Congrats! I use a scubapro s600 and it's been nothing short of bulletproof. I use it in a more commercial environment and it has held up great. I reccomend any mid range reg that is from a reputable brand. Also important to have a adjustable dial a breath knob.some second stages such as back up regs wont have those but you will want that in your reg.

I dive mostly in and around New England so the water isn’t always too clear. But occasionally travel to quarry’s and down south. In your experience did the tinted mask change too much of your visibility compared to the clear guardian mask?
@SSPDIVING
@SSPDIVING 14 дней назад
I would stick with clear, they have a clear lens for the spectrum as well. I dive in the outer sound so vis is probably similar or better than NE. Still darker waters than quarrys etc. I would inky use the tinted mask in middle of summer. Otherwise not enough benefit for us.

Nice vid 👍! I’m new to diving, and I want to know if you are able to speak under water with this. I saw it in a video once, but I’m not sure if it was just the camera.
@SSPDIVING
@SSPDIVING 5 лет назад
Hey there! Yep, you can speak underwater with this. If you are talking about yelling to other divers underwater then, well they can hear you but it will be muffled. You need to be close for them to hear your mumbling. The other option is to purchase underwater communications. A ear/ mic system is installed in your mask, super easy to do, and you are now able to talk directly to any other diver that is also using a wireless underwater "buddy phone" OR you can have hardwire communications to the surface!

What one would you recommend between the Guardian and the Spectrum for ease of use and features to a beginner in open water diving in cold climates?
@SSPDIVING
@SSPDIVING 3 года назад
For a beginner I would recommend the Spectrum, as it's not only more geared towards recreational diving but is also more cost effective. If you know for a fact that diving is something you will do for a very long time, often, and don't have a budget, go with the guardian.... no question.

Which would you recommend for people that are just starting out?
@SSPDIVING
@SSPDIVING 6 лет назад
Super Comics Studios for people just getting started I would recommend the spectrum FFM as it is half the cost of the guardian and stealth, and most likely the user will already have a second stage they can install. Better to test that out before you invest $800 on a ffm. I do however prefer the guardian.

nice video, but i want to know what it's reallllly like please ? am a commercial scalloping set up and we currently use the guardians but they are cumbersome and waste gas. lovely for swimming about but for legging it about hunting stuff, bit of an awkward hat tbh. Is this spectrum soft near the reg ? as in, it's floppy ? looks like your reg hose pushes the mask out of shape ?Does the reg feel heavy at the front ? looks like it would. Does it bend the mask moulding if you snag the reg hose ? do you reckon the reg hose could get pulled out if you snagged it while moving about ? does it expel gas well, we sometime get Co2 head off the guardians if working hard.. like the idea of using actual DV's not the OTS one that comes with Guardian. We use coms too. Also does the Spectrum steam up much ? Guardian's good for not steaming up but waste gas. lot of Questions but your video is one of the only ones of someone actually playing underwater with them :) Cheers
@SSPDIVING
@SSPDIVING 2 года назад
Cool bro, I was actually commercial scallop diving when I took this video. We did a quick scouting/ fun dive at the end of the day and I decided to try out my new spectrum. The best way I can compare the two is the that the spectrum has more of a recreational feel vs the guardian which is solid, rigid, feels commercial grade. Near the mouth on the spectrum where you install the reg, there is not much in the way of rigidity so it is a bit floppy, if you get the right hose length and elbow ratio, your reg won’t push to the side nearly as much. The spectrum did not fog up on me but I did also use a dab of baby shampoo on the inside of the lens before each dive, I treated it like a standard scuba mask since there is not anti fogging feature on the spectrum. You can install comms as well as an ABV on the spectrum, they also have GoPro and light mounts for it. Overall if you’re diving commercially, the guardian is the way to go. If you’re diving shallow and it’s light duty work, maybe from an LP compressor with hookah regs, then sure, maybe the spectrum would be a better choice there. What depths are you diving and diving from a compressor or scuba? And nitrox or enriched air? Thanks for the questions.
@F20_forager
@F20_forager 2 года назад
@@SSPDIVING ok thanks for reply. This recreational feel to the spectrum is what am worried about i guess. Agree the guardian is a solid feeling bit of kit. good point about correct hose lengths, can see that would help. Still like the idea of getting as close to a half mask and DV as possible with a full face mask. Kirby Morgan 48 is another option. Normally dive with air and no deeper than 20m due to bottom time. Scuba, no hookah.
@SSPDIVING
@SSPDIVING 2 года назад
The spectrum was definitely the most comfortable full face mask I’ve used as the silicone skirt if very soft but I still have mine but do not use it for any serious commercial work. Maybe if I’m working less than 10’ in a lake or something. The m-48 is a good option, only used one once. Have come close to buying one but stuck with the guardians. In terms of gas consumption, you probably won’t save much more with a spectrum. I’m definitely biased towards guardians, been diving them for 9 years, always been reliable and taken every bit of abuse. The m-48 is a good option though, especially if you need to ditch the bottom half and grab your backup. Good luck and safe fishing brother, will tag you when I upload some scallop footage!

That blue doesn't really cancel out. It sticks around and still gives everything a blue ish tint. If diving in medium to low vis, I'd go with the clear lens to get as much vis as possible. It definitely won't improve vis in murky water.

How does the field of view differ from each other?
@SSPDIVING
@SSPDIVING 6 лет назад
Michael Anthony great question! This is a topic I wish I would have covered more extensively while I had the chance. There's pros and cons to each mask when is comes to the field of vision. The spectrum's glass lens is closer you your face giving you a slightly wider field of view, the cons to this is the skirt is non transparent so you lose some of your peripherals so there is a give and take there. With the guardian, the acrylic lens is slightly further from your face than the spectrum lens is so some of your overall field of view is reduced... slightly. The pros of the guardian is that is has "frosted" sides to the lens so even though the lens is further, your re-gain some if your peripheral vision in my opinion. Overall I think the guardian wins this category even though they are roughly the same. It was pretty unoticable to me, hence why I didn't even think ti bring it up in this video. Thanks for the comment, hope this helps!

@SSPDIVING
@SSPDIVING 4 года назад
Hey Jeff, thanks for the question. I would imagine the guardian would be a more familiar fit for you. It does have more rigidity than the spectrum, which is probably similar to the FFM you wear as a fireman. The guardian is my favorite of the two but the spectrum is much more cost effective, you just need to supply and install your own regulator, it also is less rigid than the guardian. It is not needed but highly recommended. If you choose not to take a FFM class, you will want to familiarize with emergency skills and be able to execute them confidently if an issue were to arise. A pool or shallow water with a dive buddy is a great place to practice. However, it is not illegal to purchase a FFM without a certification. Is it "needed" depends on experience and comfort level I suppose.

Only dumb question is the one you don't ask... lol you can still buy a FFM and dive it without a FFM certification card. However, if you do this, you will want to familiarize yourself with the out of air and emergency situations, donning and doffing the mask underwater in case of emergency, and follow all manufacturers recommendations. I do not have a FFM certification but I do have experience, knowledge, and confidence in the event of an emergency. So to answer your question... it would be a judgment call, up to you.

I have a question I haven't found an answer to yet, so before I send letter to OTS maybe someone here can answer it. I dive Nitrox, and there are certain precautions that have to be taken with regard to materials, cleaning agents, etc. for tanks and regulators to be "oxygen clean." Is that also true of full-face masks, and if so is the OTS Spectrum usable with EAN36 Nitrox?
@SSPDIVING
@SSPDIVING 6 лет назад
Great question! Actually, I was diving 34% when I filmed this footage, rec diving, nothing special. I have a handful of dives on Nitrox in the Spectrum and around 250 Nitrox "Working" dives in a Guardian. Just about all dives on the Guardian were between 80-100', working hard, heavy breathing, 32-37%. I can say that the guardian preformed well. I always keep the inside of the mask clean to prevent mold or bacteria growth. All I use is Dawn dish soap and warm to hot water and dry immediately. I would do nothing different to this mask although OTS may have other suggestions or other cleaning agents such as simple green. The main precaution is take is to make sure the oral nasal pocket is sealed properly to your face to prevent exhaling and inhaling of CO2 in and out the "dead spaces" in the mask such as near the glass or any other area INSIDE of the mask but OUTSIDE of the oral nasal pocket. That was a lot, hope it all made sense. OTS has great customer service and can typically answer any questions you have about their products as well.

A cheaper and probably better alternative would be to purchase a prescription lens kit from "trident" I know a few divers who use them. Sopa DeQuesoCaliente to be honest, I prefer the guardian but maybe that's because I've been diving it for 6 years and am a bit biased. Not a fan of the guardian or stealth regulators though. If you're just rec diving, I would go with the Spectrum.

Hey, that's awesome!!! I highly reccomend finding a local scuba diving shop who can help you become familiar with the gear, knowledge, and skills. Sounds like you're already comfortable in and under the water so classes should be a piece of cake for you. Once you get your "Open Water" (Beginner's) Card, find a dive buddy or two and go out diving in your freetime, whenever you can. Repetitions add much more knowledge and experience that your first class will. Of course, you can always dive with the dive shops, they usually host group dives and have classes to continue on your education. I wish you the best and feel free to ask any questions you may have!!

Thank you I actually just went on 2 dives yesterday it was my first time and I definitely want to do it again I was with a instructor and he thought me how to swim right how to use my equipment how to clear and clean my mask and regulator im definitely going to keep doing it and hopefully save enough to buy my own gear im looking to get certified next thank you for your recommendation unfortunately I live in Colorado USA and I was only able to dive because of the fact that I was on vacation I don’t have any beaches and I don’t think that there are any dive shops near where I live what do you recommend I do?
@seikibrian8641
@seikibrian8641 4 года назад
@@ahh5516 There are lakes in Colorado where you can dive; you don't have to have access to the ocean, although it's nice if you can. Where in Colorado do you live? There are a dozen or so dive shops in the Denver area and up to Fort Collins. There's also one in Avon. If none of those are close enough, then your best bet would be to start saving your allowance (if you get one) and maybe doing after-school work like mowing lawns so you can start saving up for a summer vacation trip to a dive resort. You can take the class-room part of the PADI Open Water Diver class on your computer from home, and then do the diving part in one week at the resort. Definitely discuss this with your parent(s) or legal guardian, and see what they think.

@@ahh5516 That's good to hear! You've got a lot of diving ahead of you. I started snorkeling when I was 16, and I did a couple of scuba dives with friends and took an "introduction to scuba diving" class, but I never got around to getting certified and getting my own wetsuit and regulator until I was 61. Better late than never, but what a waste of good diving years. (By the way, I was the oldest student in my class, and the youngest was 13.) Have fun, and happy diving!

This is true for the guardian for the most part but mine still does fog from temperature change and if there is moisture in the mask. The Spectrum FFM does not have a defog feature so you will need a defog. Johnson&johnson baby shampoo works great!

In the first comment you quoted was regarding the OTS Spectrum. The second comment you quoted was addressing the "defog" feature in the Guardian, not the spectrum. To clarify, I have not used a defog agent in the Spectrum nor have I needed to. The Spectrum was completely dry inside when I dived it and the oral nasal pocket fit may face like a glove, creating zero condensation on the inside of the glass. However, if I were to use this mask as a primary, I would use a defogging agent just as I would for a normal SCUBA mask or a FFM like the Kirby Morgan EXO that does not have a defog feature.

Retail price is US$399, but you might find it for less if you shop around. Add to that the cost of a regulator, because unlike the OTS Gaudian, Ocean Reef Neptune, etc. it doesn't come with one. Of course, if you already have a second stage that you won't need to use with a regular mask, you can dedicate it to the Spectrum at no cost.
