So Smoke Gets in Your Eyes is Caitlin's first book, written early on in her career. Her RU-vid channel (Ask a Mortician) gets progressively better, and her later 2 books, especially From Here to Eternity, show her growth and maturation as a person. I watch ALL of her content, I'm a patron of hers, and I have read all of her books. I think giving her content a second chance is worth it.

I watch almost every YT video at 1,5x or 2x speed, but never yours. I just love the calm way you talk, and I don't want to miss anything by rushing through your videos. I'm always looking forward to your wrap up videos, they are among my favs each month. We seem to have very similar opinions on the books we both read, so by now I trust your rating more than anyone else's. I wish I could take more advantage of this and find new books to read, but we also seem to have a similar taste in books and I either read them already or they are on my TBR for the near future. 😄

Re Frankenstein: I found the play starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller (rotating the two roles in an interesting way) super relatable and I liked the characters more than when I read the book. Still both flawed characters, but way more watchable than readable. Look around for that some time.

The Yellow Wallpaper is so atmospheric and enraging. I saw hints of the Yellow Wallpaper in Mexican Gothic. I'm so glad you enjoyed Piranesi (a contender for my best book 2021). Definitely worth reading (other than listening) as the use of capital letters (I think) adds to Piranesi's state of mind.

I am sorry you didn't like the book about cremation. She has a YT channel, Ask a Mortician, which I follow. I recently watched a discussion on another channel with a Forensic Anthropologist, a professor at the University of Tennessee Medical School. He talked a lot about their "body farm", which is another "green" burial option. My parents paid for pre-planning funeral costs for my husband and me when they were making their own arrangements, now I am wondering if I can get a refund if I make a choice that doesn't include a casket! Those things are so dang expensive! And ridiculous for the purpose! I think it is good to think about these thing well before they are needed (hopefully).

The Katrine Engberg one sounds very good! And that's what I like about thrillers that are not American. The pace of the story is usually a bit slower and deeper. Not that I don't like American thrillers because I have read a lot of them over the years but there is something different about Nordic thrillers that I really like. The book written by TJ Klune also sounds wonderful but I have yet to read his first one, which I only saw very good reviews of. The 'books I want to read' list just keeps growing and growing. 🤣

I can't wait to read the new TJ Klune book and am so glad it sounds so good! I've actually gone back to school this year for a secondary degree in Thanatology (the study of death, dying, grief, loss, and bereavement), and fiction books that cover these aspects of humanity really well have always been some of my most favourite books to read. With Caitlin Doughty's book, I found your review so interesting! I've read all of her books and have watched her RU-vid channel for years, so perhaps having gotten to know her RU-vid persona and her "Good Death" movement grow over the years was a large influence on how I felt about her books because I had those pre-existing assumptions about the way she looks at death and the dead. That said, my enjoyment of her work also likely stems from my background in Biological and Forensic Anthropology. I essentially have a degree based on studying physical human remains and have taken anatomy classes, etc. As you say, everyone has different comfort levels/approaches to death and dying, and I definitely can see how this book does not show Doughty's respect for the dead as much as her online persona does. We have been assigned this book to review for one of my current Thanatology classes and I thought that I knew how I would write my responses in the assignment since I had read it before, but on this second read I have already noted some of the aspects that you discuss. Your review of it has made me think even more about how Doughty writes about death work. Thanks for the perspective shift!
@PlantBasedBride
@PlantBasedBride 2 года назад
I think you’ll love TJ Klune’s latest book! Yeah, it appears a lot of people have a particular view of the author based on her online presence, of which I am completely ignorant. I’m curious to watch a few videos to see what I think, but I also think a book should stand on its own without extensive outside research on an author to understand their point of view, you know? I wonder if the fact that I had no connection to the author and didn’t enjoy her sense of humour pulled back the curtain to reveal the stark reality of the way she spoke about people, alive and dead. Her argument that we should allow elderly people to die, her flippant attitude towards dead infants (except for one moment), her judgement of a man’s method of suicide, her condescension towards grieving families and their choices surrounding a dead loved one, left a unpleasant taste in my mouth. I can imagine if I related more to the author/found her funny I may not have noticed these aspects nearly so much. I’m still interested in learning more about death and have heard good things about Stiff by Mary Roach, so that will likely be my next foray into this area!
@AyjayPerson14
@AyjayPerson14 2 года назад
@@PlantBasedBride I definitely agree that her book should have been able to stand alone without her online persona! I've also read Mary Roach's Stiff and I enjoyed it too. It's more from a journalism perspective but she talks about other ways society deals with death and the dead that Caitlin didn't cover in her book. Another one I enjoyed was Past Mortems by Carla Valentine. But I also have met Carla Valentine and visited where she works at an anatomy museum, so now I am second-guessing if my previous relationship impacted how I viewed that book too or not 😅

Because you mentioned wanting to read more french books, I recommend "La rivière a l'envers" by Jean-Claude Mourlevat. It is a children's book technically, but to this day still one the most beautiful books I've ever read. I've thought of translating it myself several times, because it saddens me so much that I can't share this story with my friends who don't read french. It's a fairytale like story filled with characters that have known a lot of loss but are somehow still so filled with love and hope. I loved I'm Thinking of Ending Things because for me the form and the creepiness of it were enough. I saw the plot twist coming too, but I also saw from the beginning that the ending was probably going to be a bummer hahaha, so I decided to enjoy the ride and it's one of my favorite books of this year. This year has been a hard one for, well anything I generally do to recharge. Homeschooling 2 with an infant is really time consuming-who would have thought. I’ve started several books but never finished. I finished reading one book in October A River to the Sky by Elizabeth Peters. It is the final book in the Amelia Peabody series which I have been working my way through for about 10 ish years. I highly recommend this series. Our protagonist is a female Indian Jones at the height of the Egyptology craze. I will tell you that the main character Amelia is a stereo typical English Christian of the era, and the books only give a positive view of the Islam practiced by the multiple Egyptian Characters. All while keeping a believable historic world of the late 1800- early 1900.

I was surprised at your response to Caitlin Doughty's book, until I saw that it was her first publication. I think she was probably trying to approach the subject with a bit too much humor to try to win people over; now that she generally has an audience, I think she's leveled out a bit to being frank and honest about it, while also remembering to continue respecting and humanizing the dead. I need to read more of her work to say for sure, though; most of my exposure to her content has come from her RU-vid channel and browsing her books in the store.

My favorite read in October was The Thursday Murder Club. I immediately added The Yellow Wallpaper and The Tenant. I read Smoke Gets In Your Eyes a while ago and I did not have any issues with it. Being an ICU nurse, I see a lot of death and, at times, I do believe I am jaded towards it. This is an unfortunate side effect of the work I do.

I started that one but it got returned to the library before I could finish. I was enjoying it, though! Oh, I hope you enjoy them as much as I did. I can understand that. I think what got to me most was her opinion of the families who were grieving, honestly. It felt like she had a lot of judgement towards them and that’s rough considering their going through a very difficult time. I also really disliked the way she spoke about the man who completed suic*de. But obviously it didn’t bother a lot of people so I acknowledge it’s likely my own sensitivity/perspective that doesn’t align with hers!

I actually really liked reading Frankenstein. I think it was one of the few books in school (post-8th grade) where I legitimately read it instead of bsing my way through the associated assignments. But I also feel like you're not really supposed to like either of the main characters. They both kind of suck as "people" lol

I haven't read The Yellow Wallpaper in more years than I care to count (at least two decades, not going to think about the detailed number, haha!), but I still vividly remember the story. I wasn't aware that it was based on the author's actual experience, and I think that makes it even more horrifying and deeply disturbing. I hope that she eventually found peace, but I know that is unlikely, given the era in which she lived. Poor lady- and the fact that she was able to write about it, and get it published, is a testament to her immense personal strength.

I agree wholeheartedly. I looked up the author upon finishing and the horror of the story hit so much harder knowing this was her own story. I hate to think about how many women throughout the centuries were mistreated and institutionalized due to the misunderstanding of mental illness.

I was so scared you wouldn't like Frankenstein but im so happy you did! It's one of my faves :) I read it for the first time a couple years ago so I don't remember every detail but I do not remember feeling as disgusted by Viktor as you clearly were 😂 I remember feeling perhaps a little sympathy for him at times or completely indiferent, it didn't bother me as much as I was focused on his relationship with the creature. I found his obsession and scientific investment to be fascinating even though it's a dangerous and wrong thing to pursue and what not. As for the "monster" , his behaviour was in my perspetive a consequence of him being created without a "soul" or a conscience, without a true understanding of human relationships and most of all love. If one knowns nothing about these things and all one sees is cruelty and fear, especially towards oneself, I can see why he would resort to hate and violence. Obviously never knowing love is no excuse for acts of violence and being treated with aversion doesn't necessarily mean you're destined to repeat the cycle. However it's one of many possible outcomes so it felt logical in a way or "natural" if you will. Anyway, theres a movie about Mary Shelley, a biography, that I recomend. Her life is...turbulent to say the least. She goes throught a lot of hardships and pain and does something beautiful with it. You can also gain a bit more insight on her relationship with her husband Percy Shelley as well as her social, literary and scientific content (which play a big part in the process of writing Frankenstein and in the story itself)! The movie is actually called Mary Shelley 😂 it's still fiction so it may be romanticized or changed slightly but worth the watch I believe!

Oh cool, thank you for the recommendation! I definitely want to watch that film. Oh yes, I felt sympathy for the creature at first - they certainly didn’t deserve to be created then abandoned and treated with disgust and fear by everyone they met, but once they made the choice to start killing people and condemning people to death that evaporated. The way they pinned Justine for their first murder just because they had a feeling Justine would be afraid of them felt very gross - she doesn’t owe the creature her love and attention, and she doesn’t deserve to die because she would likely not want to spend time with them, y’a know? And the creature didn’t even *know* Justine would react in that way, they sealed her fate based on an assumption!

I read The picture of Dorian Gray for the first time in October also. I was discussing it with my mom who had seen the movie several times. I asked her if the characters were gay in the movie? She thought I was crazy. I told her they are clearly gay in the book. She was shocked by this. I then started researching and went down a rabbit hole of Oscar Wilde’s life. I felt so incredibly sad for him. Had he been born a hundred years later he may have been able to live as his truest self. 💔 Such a gifted way with words. I’m searching for the next thing to read from him now.

I'm gonna be in the minority here but Under The Whispering Door was a big no-no to me. I absolutely LOVED The House in the Cerulean Sea. But Under The Whispering Door felt incomplete to me. The major problem to me was that I think I was supposed to feel so much for Wallace and Hugo. The thing is... I didn't think Wallace's attachment to the other characters was convincing. His relationship to the other characters didn't feel wholesome or realistic. I felt like Wallace had zero connection to the rest of them. Also, the majority of this book was about two characters talking. It was a lot of telling but not a lot of showing. Other than that, not much happened. I gave it 2 stars. One star for the magical elements of this book which the author does well and one star for Nelson because I adore him. The rest was a let down.
