CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Homer (Jake Gyllenhaal) tells his dad (Chris Cooper) about his hopes and dreams and that he's quitting the coal mine for good.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
NASA engineer Homer H. Hickam, Jr.'s autobiography provided the basis for this drama about a teenager coming of age at the dawn of the space race. In 1957, Homer Hickam (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a high school student in Coalwood, West Virginia when the Soviet Union launches Sputnik, the first man-made satellite. While most of his friends and neighbors react with fear or distrust, Homer is instantly fascinated and begins studying everything he can find on jet and rocket design. While many of Homer's friends are puzzled by his new obsession, several new friends share his enthusiasm, and with the encouragement of his teacher (Laura Dern), Homer and his fellow "Rocket Boys" begin designing and launching their own homemade missiles. However, Homer's father (Chris Cooper) takes a dim view of his son's interest in rockets and is convinced Homer's future should be the same as his own, working in the local coal mines. October Sky mixes the drama of traditional family conflicts with a nostalgic glimpse of life in the mid-50's and a look at the earliest days of our journey into space.

His father is such a great character; he’s presumably been brought up in Coalwood, so he has lived his life with success being either excelling at being a miner, or football bringing you to college. He doesn’t reject rocketry because it’s too academic, he just can’t conceive that something like rocketry could lead to a successful life outside of Coalwood. It almost makes him a bit tragic.
@Dingosean
@Dingosean Год назад
He is a tragic character, but he's also the star of this film in my opinion... because he's actually a really damn good father figure at the end of the day. Every one with a father sees a lot of the same stubborn narrowmindedness in their dads to a degree... but while Chris Cooper's character here might have been disappointed here or there, at the very end of the day, he let his son be himself - which is something a lot of dads just couldnt do without a big outburst, as they want to live vicariously through their son...

And you gotta remember, this is a man born in 1912. He just didn't understand how rockets would lead to a career, not realizing that the real value to it is understanding the math and science behind it. Even if he couldn't be a rocket engineer, he had a future as some sort of engineer or scientist or even educator like his own mentor (the fantastic miss riley). He didn't have to work such a physically demanding and dangerous job in the coal mines. His dad wanted what was best for him, he was just from a different time.

He wasn't brought up in Coalwood, in fact it was Gary. He moved to Coalwood in 1934, when the superintendent of the mine at the time the Captain taught him everything he knew. Actually theres a lot in this book that was left out. In fact certain people were even left out, Tag is one of them he was the Coalwood sheriff, he had no real power but did things around town.

Yeah that tends to happen with new technologies. New job opportunities are created. If you told somebody twenty years ago that you wanted to make money putting video's on the internet everybody would think you were out of your mind, now it's a real possibility if you're good enough.

This movie resonates with me so much as an adult. My father was a coal miner and in my area that's what you done. I had a hobby growing up that later in my adult life I turned into a very successful career that I do to this day. Its the complete opposite of my fathers career and growing up he would say the same things to me. Its nonsense you need to do this, why you still messing around with that stuff it will get you nowhere in life, its a waste of money and time, yada yada. I never ended up working for NASA but I ended up being a broadcast engineer working for multiple big name news and radio stations throughout the country.

It's interesting how his dad is concerned about the rockets and telling him to be careful but sent him down in a mine to work. It is also interesting that while he seems to not care most of the time he does love his son and have concern for him. He also instills a good work ethic, work first hobbies second. That probably helped Homer go where he did in life.

I remember when I first watched the film as a kid, I thought of people like him and Mr. Turner as the main antagonists. That’s far from the truth now that I’m older, especially the dad. He always cared about and loved his son, he just wanted Homer to be successful and didn’t see rockets as a good career path (though he obviously did consent to it as a hobby). When you think about it, aside from wanting/expecting Homer to follow in his footsteps, most of the wisdom he imparts on Homer can be applied to pretty much every line of work- especially work ethic. And that’s a large part of being a good parent.

Well at the time going into space wasn't something you could reasonably believe was a future for a kid. Also uneducated parents are divided on this topic. If you can make a living and have a family without education, what is it's value beyond learning to read and write. Others think, I want my child to have more than me so I place their education high as my priority. You see it a lot with math education. Parents don't use math in their lives so they don't place value in it.

The lesson his father needs to learn is that your children don't live for you. You live for them. And trying to live your life again through your offspring is not only wrong, but futile. You raise them up and guide them. But when they're able to stand on their own two feet and think for themselves, they're going to walk their own path. Not yours. Even sometimes if it means they have to walk away from you for a little while. Cause when it's all said and done, they're going to do what makes THEM happy, not you. And all you can do is to be proud of what you created.
