CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When Homer (Jake Gyllenhaal) proves to Principal Turner (Chris Ellis) that his rocket didn't start the fire, he gets re-enrolled in school.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
NASA engineer Homer H. Hickam, Jr.'s autobiography provided the basis for this drama about a teenager coming of age at the dawn of the space race. In 1957, Homer Hickam (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a high school student in Coalwood, West Virginia when the Soviet Union launches Sputnik, the first man-made satellite. While most of his friends and neighbors react with fear or distrust, Homer is instantly fascinated and begins studying everything he can find on jet and rocket design. While many of Homer's friends are puzzled by his new obsession, several new friends share his enthusiasm, and with the encouragement of his teacher (Laura Dern), Homer and his fellow "Rocket Boys" begin designing and launching their own homemade missiles. However, Homer's father (Chris Cooper) takes a dim view of his son's interest in rockets and is convinced Homer's future should be the same as his own, working in the local coal mines. October Sky mixes the drama of traditional family conflicts with a nostalgic glimpse of life in the mid-50's and a look at the earliest days of our journey into space.

@@travislindsey7256 I just want to point out that the principal wasn't very supportive of the performance in sciences of his school earlier in the movie. He accepted the fact that those kids' only chance to not go in the mine was USA football, and that was only for a little few of them. That was a very stale and closed society. It is more like he started to see the value of education, rather than just seeing Homer as a way for the school to gain publicity.

I rather be a smartass and proving the Adminstrators wrong then going through my life with a false criminal record for something that I didn't do. The principal was being the smart ass first. Rudely interrupting him to make that sarcastic “obviously you learned more in the coal mines than you did in high school” comment. But that’s how “authority” is. Completely one sided. Can act however they want, say whatever they want, and think you have no right to stand up for yourself or throw their attitude back in their face.

The point isn't that the equation is advanced, it's that Homer realizes he isn't destined to live his father's life when he applies himself to something he has passion for. Everyone's giggling about "this is so easy; you learn this early on in a basics physics course". Homer's character wasn't in any physics courses; he was working full time as a coal miner when he taught himself this.

ghostrider Part of the problem is that it is now so much cheaper to be uneducated than educated. Of course, it was always cheaper, but the gap has become insane. And after reading it, I got to admit that the person I would have loved the most to meet in real life is not Homer or any of them boys, but Homers dad John. I'm seeing in the comments people talking about how Homers math he uses to see where the rocket landed is basic. I mean you have to take it into account that the movie takes place around 1957-ish. When people first introduced the concept of people walking on the moon it was pretty ridiculous. Especially since most jobs weren't that advanced. Now days schools are teaching kids/teens more complex things like common core I guess. Back then schools only taught more "simple" subject since the only good paying job in that town was coal mining, the students wouldn't need to know what Homer did. So the math Homer did may be basic *now days* but back then it was more rare for kids to be taught that sort of math

That's patently false. It didn't require much math and science to simply graduate (and it still doesn't). But algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus etc were all available. My mother quite literally attended a one room school. As such, there was not a seperate class for advanced maths, just different texts. Whereas my father worked very hard just to get through basic algebra in a larger school.

@robertb7230
@robertb7230 4 года назад
Heh, no. It was rare in Homer's part of the country, because he lived in an insanely poor coal mining town in Appalachia (West Virginia), which is the poorest section of the U.S., by FAR. Its essentially the white version of the ghetto--except white ghetto's tend to be significantly more poor than black ghettos since rural areas have less access to public goods. Homer's school was underfunded, the entire education system in that area was underfunded. Which is why the classes only taught basics, because by the time students got there, they were way behind. But for MOST of the nation, Calculus was actually more prevalent as a class than it is today. If anything many schools have regressed in terms of difficulty of their curriculum, as more and more subjects are being pushed "upward" to intro classes of college. (The number of students that need Into to Calc in college has skyrocketed). A lot of complex reasons for this. But overall, if you took the average HS student today and tossed them back into a math class in 57, they'd probably be covering the same subject. The only things that have really changed is there is less gym time, less classical/history education and more focus on computer training and literacy.

In the book, Quinton is actually the one to find out it's a flair, from reading a book on aeronautics a week before. He is also the one the one to point out the airport on the map. no mention of Homer giving the principal a math lesson is in the book. The book does this story way more Justice and gives more appreciation. Kinda of a long read. But very worth it.

Actually it wasn't the fire that caused homer to leave school. the reason why Homer left school is because there was a big accident in the mine and his dad was in the hospital and the insurance would not pay for everything so Homer left school so that the family could have money to survive while his dad recovered from the accident.

The thing that always pissed me off about this scene is when Mr. Turner says well if you didn't start that fire who did. I'd be like bitch i don't give a fuck who started that fire and it ain't my job to find out. I can prove with math it wasn't me. So fuck off.... But maybe i'm not as nice as Homer.
