"But she uses male pronouns" That is a trait shared by many tomboy characters too, who are not trans. Although, given how they're trying to claim tomboy characters as well, I don't think they'd understand that "But she went to the male bath" Yes, because that's what Oden would do, not because she's a man My biggest gripe with the whole thing is that by accepting her as a trans man through her infatuation with Oden, to me that'd be like legitimizing her hijacking of someone else's identity, which sounds like a pretty fucked up thing to do She can admire Oden as much as she wants, but she is NOT him, which means she's not a man through him either
@@stickfigure8416 You are right about that. That part still didn't change it's just that more and more women/girls get braver and show that they are tomboys so nowdays there are more women/girls who use boku insted of watashi.

Let me clarify that use of the wrong pronouns in certain situations would lead to alot of misunderstandings such as: Using 私 with your close friends would be weird and you would seem distant in relation to each other, and on the flip side using 俺 with your boss would sound very rude and people would think you're either weird or just starting a fight with your boss.
Did they even really read One piece 🤦♂️ Yamato is female from beginning but she really obsessed with Oden so much that she like to call herself Kozuki oden

@@anthonychessar7179 nobody forgot about traps its just that people are too sensitive for it now. mfs will send you death threats for using that term these days.
@@anthonychessar7179 well being a trap is different from being trans. A character who is trans or at least identifies as one is present in Chivalry of a Failed Knight. It’s the character who rooms with the MC’s younger sister and only refers to themselves as a woman. They have a male figure and looks, but they identify as a woman. While a trap like Astolfo only sees himself as a man who just likes to looks cute which makes them look like a girl. Yamato from One Piece is definitely neither of these as they just have a huge fanboner to being Oden not just a random man. Like if I said I want to be Tony Stark that doesn’t make me white or a rich playboy. Yamato doesn’t care about being a man, but about being Oden who coincidentally is a man. If Oden was a woman, she would not use male pronouns.
Kinda mind boggling that these people can issue death threats freely like that with no issue or repercussions, but if they're on the receiving end then you will get call out, or worse at the risk of getting cancelled.
Bruh I saw someone asking about yamato's gender in a sincere way and all the responses were basically head-canons and this is what I hate about any community/fandom, the people should stick with what the creator says and if you have a problem, you don't have the right to hurt others for what you want or even threaten them
2:06 Yamato is not gender fluid. 💀 let's get that out of the way here, the reason why she proclaimed herself as the "son of kaido" is because she wanted to idolize her Hero.
I love how they point to Kaido & say "See! Even he respects his SON'S MALE pronouns" & hold him up as being an Ally™. Dude, he's an abusive PoS that clearly didn't want a daughter, so he's imposing the male pronouns on her out of spite. I'm sure it's just translation thing & in Japanese there's a non-gendered word for "offspring" that doesn't sound so technical but formal but from how the official Viz translation presented it, this was my take away.
These people not acknowledging that Yamato is biologically 100% female, are smoking straight copium. Just because someone identifies as something doesn’t mean they automatically become that. I can identify as a black guy, doesn’t mean I just become one now tho. Also, Yamato wants to be like her Idol Oden, not literally but figuratively. She wants to follow in his footsteps.
It's just stupid ... yamato wanted to be oden that's why she said she is a man ....not cause of some gender thing ...these people saying read the menga don't under stand a single thing about the deeper thoughts of characters ...ofcourse she was home prisoned all her life and did not have any access to this trash society
yeah, I put that as a comment as well. It is so weird in my opinion it’s like were you trying to stir up controversy because of course people who need to see people like them in all forms of media will just assume you are claiming the character as trans if you have a character of one gender claim to be another character of the other gender
It doesn’t surprise me that they threaten the life of an author for a character that’s not real. I grow tired of it by the day. Edit: 4K?! Oi, Twitter, Reddit, Facebook and Instagram . Being honest and not being a jerk works!

@@mentosvagabond Oh I have unfortunately seen this happen in other fandoms like RWBY and even video games too. Although it’s people who threaten others because they don’t like the “ trans character “ or debunk the theory.
Not only for a character that is not real, but a character HE created and has the right to do anything with HIS character. People nowadays are insanely disrespectful and think they can canonize absolutely anything over a character that isn't theirs and feel entitled/threatened if that "canon" was denied by the ACTUAL CREATOR.
The whole tomboy concept has been completely lost to these idiots. What yamato is doing was no different than a child trying to emulate their favorite superhero right down to their name, one-liners, and poses. Yamato didn't say she wanted to be referred to as "he/him" , she wanted people to call her Oden and treat her as such. She is so obsessed with the guy that she practically wants to BE him in every sense. How is this so hard to grasp? As with kaido calling her his "son". Did they forget about the abusive parenting too. Kaido is literally the stereotypical manly man "Survival of the fittest" type of guy. He wanted his successor to be a man like him, but ended up getting a daughter instead. But that didn't stop him from treating her as if she was his "Son". Get it? Kaido wanted a Son not a daughter. So of course he would demand everyone, including yamato, to treat her as such. People can be so stupid these days.
I agree with you. Also if these twittards knew anything about Japanese history they would have realised that the only reason Kaido calls Yamato his son is because only man could became the Shogun but Kaido didn't have a son so he raised Yamato as a boy in order to put her in the position of Shogun one day.
it is even more funny once you realize Oda probably does not read non-japanese tweets anyway and probably has someone in the department for japanese ones.
I saw some death threats in my reply on Twitter before... I just explain my view on some LGBT stuffs and all I see is death threats. Why would they be so aggressive when all I did is express my opinion. 💀 Apparently, being respectful isn't enough. Most of them want me to understand them but why won't they try to understand me?
@@HGKEntertainment Yeah those are the bad side of that community. Even though the majority is not like that, there has been a increase of that shit. It’s really depressing.
I always found the debate around Yamato's gender to be really stupid. She never corrects people about her pronouns or that she's a man, just that she's Kozuki Oden. She sees herself as some legendary guy she learned about, specifically him. If it was Oden's wife who tried open Wano and died, then she'd probably do the same. Her whole character arc is going to end up being along the lines of "I'm not Kozuki Oden, and I need to find out who Yamato really is!" You know, stop trying to be someone else, and be yourself kinda deal.
Right, she wants to be Oden, and since Oden was a man she became one too. Her gender identity was linked to Oden’s gender identity. Take Oden out of the equation and Yamato would’ve been fine identifying as a woman.
It is literally this. This is Yamato's character arc, but people inject their own ideology into the character and get angry when they're told what's going on. The head canon is too strong for some people.

For their logic to be consistent, Gohan and Videl from Dragon ball would have to be trans because Gohan, a male, had long hair at multiple points and Videl, a female, had short hair at one point. They would also think that Chi-Chi is trans or les because she can fight. I swear to God these people who always preach about gender equality are more sexist and transphobic than the people they accuse of the same reason.

@Yuma-chan the reason she calls herself man is because of admiration just like how kids calls themselves I'm superman she never calls herself trans or anything this word doesn't even exist in that world but u know how Twitter people are
@Yuma-chan She calls herself as his son is because no one would call her his daughter when growing up as no one there want's to be killed by Kaido, and Japanese don't really use pronouns like he or she the pronouns were only used to adress them and not used in casual conversations, And Yamato never called herself him she just calls herself Oden because thats who she admired when growing up and after learning his story she wish to become like him.

Let's be realistic, there's no "end" to this debate. The most jaw dropping and lore heavy chapter was dropped this week, with appearances from the most unexpected characters, but THIS is what twitter will waste their time arguing about
Every time people clarify a supernatural phenomenon, a character's motives, or a character's identity it almost always ends up blowing up because someone disagrees, even if the answer comes from the author or writer. People will choose to believe what they believe, even if to others it may sound crazy or they are incorrect. To these people it is not a debate, it is a shouting contest.
People are so into this trans social movement they start seeing trans people everywhere. To the point they forget sometimes in stories not everyone slightly outside of a gender norm is trans.
Imagine having your whole personality based on whether or not a character is Trans. Imagine WATCHING a 1000+ episodes because there's a Trans person in the show. Imagine wanting someone dead over a character they wrote. I swear these people aren't real. How can you function as an adult thinking like this? You have to think everyone and everything is out to get you.
"...you have to think everyone and everything is out to get you..." They do. That's a major part of the issue at hand. They are, in their own minds, in a war - their side 'perfection and saying otherwise is enemy action' and 'the others' (literally everyone who's not them) 'evil demons out to kill us all engaging in trans-genocide and taking our rights away daily' They are NOT very functional individuals at all.
The people who wanted to go on and on about Yamato being trans don't really understand the character situation. She does NOT identify as a man because she has gender dysphoria. She identifies as the person she deeply admired and respected so much as a child that she wanted to identify as him to show her way to honor him. She even changed her name to his own in a way to be closer to her idol. The concept of it is completely lost on these people because they're so desperate to have something to latch onto in popular media that they've become completely unhinged and others just join in thinking they score some brownie points for being good allies. That's why you get situations like Yamato, Bridget and Mahiro. They don't understand that anime characters have always played loose with identity and relationships because real people's identities doesn't cross that creators mind. They just want to make something fun and tell their story their way. They make characters that identify as whatever the story demands of them, not because they want to cater to specific people. I've learned a long time ago that these people doing all the complaining don't really care about story or personality. They only care about identity. They care about latching their own personality on something so they can feel important and in their mind believing that if a character is like them then they are inspiring people to be like them so their own existence is worth something. They look for acknowledgement from others through force rather than actually working to make it. They're just broken people looking for validation and are used to getting it their way looking at how vile and desperate they act when it doesn't.
Nailed it! this is all about the most thin of Identity set ups. it's really easy to market to as well. just say "this character is X" and they come arunnin' for the corpos, social media comments in hand bashing their heads on walls cheering for it. and for what? this character who claims to have this one feature possibly like them, not understanding that peopel and stories are deeper then that. just because i have a certain skin, sexuality or otherwise, doesn't mean im "represented" by a character who does. they aren't even close to me, and plenty of these pandering cutouts are nothing without them. they need it to give their lives what they see as meaning instead of actually connecting with the story itself. I've got more in common with 40k orks then the pandering crap people hand my race as an example. anyway, Yamato sounds awesome to me. trying to BE the idol you look up to is an interesting piece of character.
The gender cultists operate on this simple premise: "All in the Cult, nothing outside the Cult, nothing against the Cult." Hence why they want to infest and corrupt everything, from companies and politics to books and entertainment. All must be in the Cult, nothing outside of it. And why they lash out and seek to destroy by any means necesary anyone who speaks against the cult's doctrine: nothing against the cult. The quicker people realize that these are malevolent cultists that deserve nothing but scorn and flames, the better.
Yamato took the name Oden but didn't go around asking to be called he/him. That came from the abusive father. Anyone that calls Yamato trans is celebrating child abuse
And what's wild too is how many of them try to "claim" every GNC character as "theirs" and get extremely angry when the authors don't validate their stupid headcanons, but they'll happily ignore confirmed canon trans characters or even deny that some of them ARE trans.
@@tomraineofmagigor3499 , transgender activists have always supported child abuse hence why they’re so insistent on labeling Yamato as transgender even it’s shown abundantly clear that the only transgender character in Wano is Kiku.
the fact people are still arguing about this is insane. Yamato always claimed to be oden, she respect this man so much she want to basically be him. she never said she was male. most of the time she says she is oden while kaido calls her his son. basically yamato is lowkey a crazy fan girl she was even trying to convince momonosuke that she was his father.
For real. Those weirdos think that Kaido was "respecting Yamato's gender" while in actuality he was mocking his daughter by calling her his son. Yamato on the other hand decided to stand up to his mockery and embraced Ode's legacy even more. This is all there is to it
Even I who doesn't read One Piece had that thought, all the screenshot I see of this mention Son of Kaido, so I just assumed is a title to be referred regardless of gender, same as how in some cultures the monarch is King regardless if it is a woman.
I have a trans friend that has actually moved away from anything to do with the trans community specifically because of stuff like this. Quoted straight from her, "Why should it matter what anyone else is? They always want to complain that people get a say about what goes on in their pants, but then throw a fit about what's in someone else's pants."
That community is desperate to claim anyone as their own to validate their own existences. Especially characters that are as fictional as there being more than two genders.
The issue I have with Yamato's Gender identity sub-plot is that the reason she identifies as male is because her father is sexist and wouldn't acknowledge her otherwise. She's a victim of abuse and is identifying as male to appease her abuser. Another thing is more of a translation thing, while Japanese doesn't have third person gender pronouns, they do have feminine and masculine first person pronouns. Tomboys in manga will often use the masculine pronoun and with localizers shoving their own agendas into translations, I wonder if she even truly identifies as male or if she is simply a tomboy.
Kudos to you for noticing the sup-plot of her being the son of kaido.I wish her life before Oden was shown even just a little,we would've understood her more. Also her father isn't sexist, him calling her son has something to do Japanese culture something about fathers "respecting" their daughters to the point of calling them sons and making them inherit his properties. But for kaido it was him planning on making his son the new shogun of wano, sadly for him it was a girl nonetheless he decided on raising her as that hypothetical son.His subordinates too afraid of his power fallow in his footsteps, that is the most logical explanation (though very between the lines like many things and just proves that a minimum knowledge of Japanese culture is required to understand this heavily Japanese inspired arc) and not because kaido is to dumb to realize that a woman can't turn into a man.
Ok, correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the whole thing with Yamato that she wanted to be Oden (who was a man) and thus did her damnedest to present herself as such. It's not like she going through dysphoria just next-level fangirling. It's like if a kid really looked up to Optimus Prime to the point where they started saying they were him and that because he was cybertronian, they are now also cybertronian cuz they "are" Optimus Prime. Once you look at it like that this whole trans/gender debate becomes even more stupid.
Yep. She's somewhere between "a tomboy enjoying activities that are mostly enjoyed by men" and "a fan girl trying to live like her favorite idol". At NO point was she ever a genetic man, she just likes to go around in costume claiming to be Oden.
People who look at the world through rainbow colored glasses can't see anything else. Like if a girl loves cars, instead of makeup, then they assume they are a "lesbian/transgender in denial." Ironically, they're creating more gender stereotypes, and limiting things for both hetero and LGBTQ people by doing this.
and normally after they have closure regarding the impact and experiences they've had and/or mature a bit, they tend to get over that phase and embrace their own identity.
They apparently thought Ash's Pikachu was trans just because he disguised as a female Pikachu. In one episode. Clearly, they don't understand the concept of disguises.
I remember they told us that the creator of Guilty Gear confirms that Bridget is trans and that we must shut up and get over it. But when Oda simply says Yamato is 100% female, they say he must be killed. Gotta love the ludicrous.

This has become a common trend with these people, take a situation that is absolutely f*cked up, mental/physical abuse, then have the broken victims and their tormentors both be celebrated as icons. 💀 Remember Bridget and the Superstitious Village that oofed same sex twins? Same story.
I mean that's how Abuse works, it change person's mentally Like how some people becoming Gays because they have abusive fathers same goes for lesbians Trans is just a byproduct of "you (doing something) like girl/boy" and take that criticism seriously to the point you think you're opposite gender
Anyone who thinks Yamato was a trans man completely ignored her character design. Oda has made his trans characters clear. They are either cartoonish like Ivankov and the island Sanji was on, or are passing to their identity like Kiku who I have seen no one take issue with. Yamato is literally dressed as a shine maiden, and has a Hannya Mask which represents a jealous female demon, which can be seen as a nod to her obsession with Oden and desire to follow Ace into the sea. She does not embody any of Oda's design philosophy when it comes to trans characters, and clearly represents as her biological female self as opposed to other Trans characters. Her obsession with Oden is just that. An obsession. One so strong she tries to emulate everything about Oden. If she just found out Oden was actually a female mink all along, she would suddenly say she was a female mink. This is not trans.
Also, the Kaido "respecting Yamato's choice" thing is misunderstood. There's a flashback to Kaido trying to use this as a punishment to teach Yamato a lesson. In not exact words, Kaido basically said, "You wanna be Oden? Fine. Then I'll treat you like Oden. Now stay in that cave and starve until you cut it out."
People took the “I want to be a man like oden” and only focused on the man part. It’s like they can’t fathom the idea that you want to be like someone not physically but what they represented. Oden was more than just a man, he was Oden.
she is indeed a girl 100% she said she wanted to be called a he but that doesn't change that she still is a woman. I also checked the manga and anime and i can confirm she is a woman. She just admires oden alot and wanna be like him.
I understand wanting representation but if you're stereotyped for being mentally ill would you want the poster child for mental illness in the show to be your representation?

Yet they want him to change his decision, basically you either kill your creativity and make something that pleases us or you’re not worth existing. Like this perspective that these people have is just shocking
Truth be told, Yamato isn't trans!! Because the character didn't choose to be MAN/MALE, Yamato wants to be ODEN, the character wants to be another person, different from Kiku, who is a man who identifies as a woman. Also, when I say "Didn't choose" because Kaidou is a controlling toxic father, he wants to decide everything in his child's life, even the gender (also Oda stated the following sometime ago in a SBS he got the inspiration of Yamato from Rose of Versailles character who as Yamato was raised as a man but was a woman, but still was attracted to the opposite gender)
The Kaido wanting a son thing has been made up by the fandom and yeah, Yamato wanted to be like Oden, but that's the whole point of his arc. His big scene is him introducing himself as just Yamato, because he want from wanting to be Oden to wanting to be like him, in the sense of adventuring outside of Wano. Yet even after he abandons his dream of being Oden, he still calls himself a he, a son and still bathes in the men's side of the onsen.
@@ikuas3881 first of all, I'm not your "bro", and I'm not a bro, I'm a trans girl myself. Secondly, I would gladly let people say Yamato is a guy if there was evidence that it is that way, which isn't. Throughout the whole arc Oda tells us how and why Yamato develops that personality. Not because she doesn't identify herself with her body, not because of gender dysphoria: because she's delusional and wants to play the role of a great man. And thirdly, Oda put her in the same picture as all the other one piece girls. Can you guys please stop being such w£!rdos? I love the fact they all refer to English translation, even tho Japanese has both muscular and feminine ways of speaking about yourself or others and both can be used by males and females and doesn't mean someone identifies as trans. You can see that in a way a lot of Tomboy characters speak, usually using more muscular terms. The reason why Yamato will refer to herself in muscular terms is simple, Oden, she mimics all that Oden did, his habits, and his way of speech. Heck, if Oden believes himself to be a flying purple elephant Yamato will too
Ya, wtf? I think the internet or that community just wants to start wars or get offended for attention. She clearly a woman she got oppai. For some odd reason, the us and eroupe have gotta a lot of people who want attention or want to feel offended, so they can be part of something.
EXACTLY!!!!! Western people are SO FUCKING dumb and use there western beliefs and ideas and compare it to japanese culture, which does not work. HOW in the fucking world can people THINK that yamato is trans or whatever? I instantly knew when it was revealed that yamato is female, but called herself "oden" that she adored oden and wanted to be like him. It still baffles me that this trans bullshit was brought up.
It's truly mind boggling that they can't grasp the simple fact that Yamato "identifying" as a man is supposed to be a joke. There are already Trans characters in OP, Kiku and Ivankov to name just a few. It was supposed to subvert the expectation. We kept hearing about Kaido's son, turns out Kaido's son is a girl, then she proclaims herself a man, then she explains "Because Oden was a man, and I decided to become Oden, therefore I'm going to be a man too." Then it all came together and we were SUPPOSED to go "oh, wait a minute, she's not trans, she's just an idiot."
Exactly, it was supposed to be an "oh wait a minute" moment. She doesn't actually identify as a man, she identifies as Oden. Which just makes her stupidly delusional.
To be honest I find it crazy you can identify as men or woman and it's not crazy but yamato identifying as oden is crazy and delusional, that really says something.
People who use Kaido's speech as argument into their view in Yamato's sexuality just don't understand old culture and costumes. Basically, the elder son is the heir of everything the father has but, since he has only Yamato, a daughter, usually her husband would inherit and command what Kaido may left. Now, for her to work so hard to prove herself strong and smart enough to be understood and called as "son", it's an honor. This is just a way people in the past used to show their respect for their daughters efforts, saying implicitly that: "even though i don't have a son, my daughter is stronger and smarter than any son i could have and she's worthy to inherit everything i have".
This is literally like, they are trashing a woman's story of resilience and persistence just for their agenda, but... woman's defense isn't also their agenda? 🤔
But you don't understand, Japan has to alter all of its history and culture to meet the standards of Western ideologues. But remember, they're not colonizers, because they're progressive and on the right side of history.
So basically is pro-women in a lot of ways. Like her father is clearly a piece of shit and she has to prove herself over and over again to him. These people in these communities or just anyone in general who is acting this way about a character is insane to me. Get a life people. Do any of them actually pay attention to the characters, themes, and chapters when they read?? It’s like they get an idea in their head that’s completely misinterpreting what the author is saying and get pissed that the author is like no sorry your mistaken. Cause apparently their thoughts and beliefs are more important than what is actually on the page. Talk about narcissism to the max.
@@nicholasanderson7316 you think any of that westerner have a brain when the "pronounce" is a topic and all that letters community in the opposing side? no hell no
I always felt Kaido calls her "his son" not because he "respects her gender" but because he really wanted a male successor and he's just coping, especially since she wears a disguise. He's just a classic misogynist, nothing fancy, and she just cosplays Oden and wants to be him, so she acts like she actually is a man
I love how it doesn't seem to occur to these idiots that their so-called 'gotcha quote' might not have any of the context they are digging out of it in the original Japanese... and their proof is just one of their own doing wishful thinking translation &/or inserting their own political viewpoints. Something we know has happened with other mangas & light novels on this very topic. Eg. there was a recent one with a character who clearly identified/thought of themselves as a CROSS-DRESSER, & the translator changed that to trans. Only for idiots to then get all pissy when the creator got annoyed about the mistranslation.
That's exactly it. If these twittards knew anything about Japanese history they would have realised that the only reason Kaido calls Yamato his son is because only man could became the Shogun but Kaido didn't have a son so he raised Yamato as a boy in order to put her in the position of Shogun one day.

The key difference that settles this whole debate is that Yamato refers to themself specifically as “Oden”, and not as a “male”. By this I mean that Yamato’s whole debate is less about her identity as a “trans” but more as an “impersonator”. For example, someone who is extremely passionate about cosplay and the characters they dress as aren’t those characters, but want to be as close to those characters as possible out of admiration, regardless of their gender. Yamato wants to be a “guy” because “Oden was a guy”, not because she wants to be a guy, but because she wants to be “Oden”. Despite being in the female cast spread, in the series she joins the guys in their bath. Yamato isn’t a “guy” or a “girl”, Yamato is “Oden”.
I think you understood it better than anyone else, in my personal case, until I see Yamato accept the identity of "Yamato, daughter of Kaido" instead of trying to become "Kozuki Oden" I will keep on referring to him as a male because that part of the character's arc is yet to be finished.
didnt yamato start calling himself, well, yamato having abandoned the name of oden but still uses masculine pronouns and goes to the men's washing room? that was a pretty noticeable bit at the end of the wano arc with them deciding to no longer use the name of oden but still using male pronouns

I don't get the argument here with these people. They seem to (purposely) forget that Yamato doesn't want to be a man, she wants to be Oden specifically. But this doesn't fit with what these people want so Oda is wrong. Its pretty crazy how deluded they can be when the author himself comes out and sets things straight and they say he's wrong.
Yeah, considering they lump tomboys with the opposite sex and vice versa... They're so stupidly selfish that they'll attack any and everything that'll say just simple facts of the matter.
I forgot the word in Japanese for it which would represent Yamato perfectly. It’s basically mean identifying as a specific person. Which explains why she call herself he bc oden is a he. Makes u think how common is this if there’s a specific word for this shit😂
Yamato does not identify as a male, she identifies as Oden who just happened to be male, and she is not well in the head because wanting to be someone else and having delusions that you are that person is not healthy, real shocker there.

yamato never identified as a man, she always stated she identified as kozuki oden. the whole kaidos son thing is a mistranslation, yamoto is kaidos heir, its just that the heir to someone is usually male. yamoto is not trans, nor is she identifying as male. this is confirmed by the guy who created the character, there is no debate or transphobia or sexism or anything. its just simple facts.
People who throw around these death threats should be arrested or institutionalized. It is not something that you can just say to someone just because you're terminally online.
It's amazing how these people can read the manga, read the full context on why Yamato called herself a man (literally took on the identity of person out of respect) but then goes on to say she is trans even though nothing in her story hints at being trans and the kicker is there is actual trans characters in the story. People take minor stories in one piece and miss the big picture.

The thing is in order to think Yamato is trans, you have to also think that Oda is just so disrespectful to trans people that he would write a trans character just to constantly dead name and misgender her in and out of the manga.
Trans people can choose to keep their same name and even said "I am yamato, son of Kaidou" Yamato as a side note isn't a feminine name, Yamato Takeru I think was the person Oden is inspired off of, definitely Yamato, unsure on the other name without looking.
the weird thing is he isnt misgendered at any point within the manga by anyone who knows him he's only misgendered in external things like the vivre cards which arent actually directly written by oda, honestly i thought the debate was pretty well settled when yamato decided to stop calling themselves oden and chose to go to the men's washing room after that, makes it pretty clear that their gender is no longer associated with the name of oden
I'm a straight girl but when I was in high school I was a serious tomboy. My guy friends from that time still to this day call me "Chad", refer to me as their "little bro" and will absent-mindedly call me "he", because it's affectionate and rapport-building for them. I'm much more feminine now, but I still love they do those things because it's a throwback to a part of myself I used to really embrace. Am I a guy because of this? No! Not at all!! It's just a nuanced part of my personality because humans are- brace yourself- MULTIFACETED UNIQUE NUANCED INDIVIDUALS. I identify with Yamato a lot in this way and am really trying not to pull my hair out at all the people who have such little lives that they cling to the identity of fictional characters as justification for their own identities. Just be confident in yourself- if you were things like this wouldn't completely shake your world. Twitter nobodies are insane
I'm someone whose sister enrolled in a secondary school said to be a "vagabond dent", and had to tough up herself when I was not there to cover her everything. She also takes pride in her title "bro" her friends dearly gave her~ even now that she is much more feminine, her close friends from secondary school still call her "bro" when they are together. So, I totally get your sentiment there.
I find it ironic that the people who do the whole "DON'T DISCRIMINATE BASED ON GENDER!" scream and cry when they can't assign someone's gender based on their "likes"... Twitter freaks are truly the worst scum
I think a lot of people's interpretations on yamato as a character are based on their own personal experiences, and how they personally understood oda's writing of the character. Its the case with a lot of the more ambiguously gendered characters in media, yamato isn't the only one. But that's because everyone experiences gender differently. The frustrating part is people being unable to realise that and just saying everyone that disagrees with them is either "pushing an agenda" or "transphobic". So on that note, I'd like to share my interpretation. And that is that Yamato does not care for gender, or for pronouns. Not really. There was never any fighting against being identified as a girl, and the identifying as a man only came about with the hero worship and LARPing as Oden (because that's what it is, really, dressing up as and role playing as another person in day to day life because of the sheer admiration held towards said person). There never seems to be any discomfort in the body being shown. Yamato is just channelling Oden. If Oden was a man, then yamato channels Oden the man, like in Canon. But if Oden had identified as a woman or a noodle or a sword or something else, than that's what yamato would have gone with instead. In yamato's case, it was never about gender. It was about Oden. So i think it's wrong to say that yamato is trans. I think gender apathetic is more accurate if you wanna label it something. Because not everyone who doesn't care for their biological sex is trans. And in yamatos case, well, gender is irrelevant. Only Oden matters. So when yamato is LARPing then, yamato probably likes to be referred to as he/him. But when yamato is just being yamato, then any pronouns work, she/her, he/him, they/them... it doesn't really matter. Because the thought "I can't be Oden because I'm a girl" never crossed yamato's mind as far as we know, implying that yamato does not care for gender. But like I said, that's just my interpretation based in how I read one piece and my own experiences with gender. It's not the undeniable truth, and I'm perfectly fine with it being disproven if ever oda decides to clear up the ambiguity in his writing and state it outright what yamato prefers. Which he is under no obligation to do in my opinion, its his characters, and he chooses how he writes them.
Its hard to imagine the amount of lunacy you need to have to basically try to threaten the CREATOR of a character just because their thoughts of them doesn't align with you
This is why I hate when people try to force creators to write characters in a way that isn’t what the author intended. As a writer myself, it is offensive to have uncreative people try to ram their woke shit down authors’ throats. Like come on. Write it yourself if you think there is “no representation” or some shit 😑 but ofc I hate giving that as an option cause how I personally show my love and appreciation for something is to write fanfics about it. Ugh I hate these kind of people.

Yamato is a woman. Yamato was always obviously a woman. People think Yamato is a girl because Yamato is obviously a girl. Using male pronouns does not make a female character trans. This is an old anime trope.
So respecting pronouns for fictional characters is uber important until the second you claim they are trans with no evidence. Then you can ignore them AND have the morale high ground according to this people
To me ok, Yamato Identify as Oden specifically, impersonating him/Yamato believes she's Oden reincarnate. Which Oden is a man therefore uses male pronouns which to me sign of respect I guess.
@@stevengabrielromano526 yh it was that (impersonation). Hot take: Yamato isn’t trans, she’s schizo. As Yamato, she’s clearly a girl. As „oden“, she thinks she’s the legendary chad himself. And as a gigachad like Oden, „she“ doesn’t get mad when being „misgendered“. Now let the flame wars begin 😂
She's clearly not right in the head with that. What do you expect? Her father tortured her for looking up to Oden and siding with the good guys. If you look at it further, you can even say the Twitter users are enabling an abused person's unhealthy coping mechanism if they really think Yamato is real.
like really.. people will threaten the creator of one piece if it means that yamato becomes trans or they would go as far as to dox him if they don't get what they fucking want of him.. like literally... one piece is his story to do not yours to ruin.
Reminds me of Naoto Shirogane and the Persona 4 community. The entire games plot is "facing your true self." That's literally the entire plot-point of the game. Naoto was born a woman and pretends to be a man to cope with the massive sexism in the japanese police force that look down on women in those roles. She wants to be a detective, her parents were detectives and she idolizes them, even after they've been dead for so long she wants to be like them and make them proud. And even though Naoto's entire fucking story arc is coming to terms that she's a woman and she should never be ashamed of her gender or hide it because it's *WHO SHE IS* the community still says "TRANS NAOTO, HE/HIM, DONT BE A TRANSPHOBE" Even though the epilogue proves she's no longer wearing bandages to hide her (HUGE) breasts and is wearing much more effeminate clothing, and is (probably) dating Kanji, who had a very similar story of being gaslighted by women and told he was gay his entire life just because he enjoys sewing and making dolls for kids. Yamato is very much the same. She wants to be called a man because her idol was a man, she wants to live as he lived, be as he was, so from a traumatized child's perspective, who lost someone they looked up to, naturally she thinks she "needs" to be a man to do that too. I'm not surprised, nor butthurt she would feel that way. Kaido respects his childs wishes, which is why he refers to her by male pronouns. Because that is what she wants.
Well, Kaido probably doesn't respect her tbh. He calls her his "son" is because he want a son not a daughter. According to actual history in ancient Japan, a female heir cannot inherit their parents position, only their male heir can. Therefore, if there's only a female heir in the family, they need to act like a male and to hide their identity as a women. There's so many anime depicting this like for some example is Kyubei from Gintama who is forced to be male. Also, Kaido probably mock her for being Oden by calling her a "man".

@@Luminus2 OR he doesn't see and think of things from a western perspective, hence why he introduced her as kaido's daughter and put her in a woman only color spread for women's day in Japan specifically.
Wano was set in a ancient Japanese setting. In ancient times it was almost always sons who could inherit positions of power from their parents. In some cases when there was no male heir a female heir would inherit the position as if they were a son. Kaido calls Yamato a son because she's his only heir, Yamato calls herself that because she might've never been called otherwise so it's habit, plus she calls herself Oden
I figured it's something tied to Japanese culture and history. People look at this with a lens of western culture and history when they should be thinking "maybe there's something in Japanese culture and history where a woman is referred to as a man/son and not for trans reasons".
This, exactly this! It is what i was thinking too! And on top of it all, why are they even hung up on this, THERE IS LITERALLY SO MANY TRANS PEOPLE IN ONE PIECE!
That's exactly what it is. If these twittards knew anything about Japanese history they would have realised that the only reason Kaido calls Yamato his son is because only man could became the Shogun but Kaido didn't have a son so he raised Yamato as a boy in order to put her in the position of Shogun one day.
I don't believe Oda gives a shit about LGBT to begin with, Kiku can be explained as being a feature of Wano which is full of traditional japanese cultural details - the role of feminine men in feudal japan being one of them. And the Okama have nothing to do with LGBT either not in One Piece nor in real life since there are many japanese Okama spokespersons who have openly spoken up about the fact that Okama men are men and want to be seen as men, and that their dressing up as women is not a gender statement. Basically, as a japanese reader reading One Piece, I don't see any of this woke bullshit in Oda's writing until the west points it out whether negative or positive.
@@uncreativename6364 Basing your point on English translations which are most likely to be influenced by a woke person is not the right move, don't disrespect yourself, you are smarter than this. In the Japanese story, you know, Oda's native language, Ivankov is called the Okama Queen, please refer to my original comment for info on Okamas and the 'Queen' part which would also become an easy grab for woke-jokes to say it means he's transgender, can be explained through understanding that drag queens call themselves queens all the time, it doesn't make them a woman. They simply appreciate the aesthetics and the connotations of the word. I guess Lightning McQueen must be a transgender car too huh? Almost every single argument the LGBTLMNOP people use for Oda being fully supportive is through using the English translation (again, official translations by VIZ and Crunchyroll are guaranteed to be LGTB supportive because they are woke companies) - there's not a single argument to be made using the Japanese source. She isn't trans. Kaido calls her his son because he is disappointed that he has a daughter instead of a son. So he forces her to his son. Yamato clearly doesn't identify as male. She called herself a girl in the story.
She also claims to be Oden who’s a guy so he can also just be calling her his son in hope that she would take over for him kind of like giving a little bit for cooperation
I was always under the impression that Kaido didnt want a daughter. Kaido then hid yamato and disguised her as a son to maintain his pride. When you are a kid and dont know anything else you kinds just accept stuff like that. Then Yamato sees Oden, the only person she could respect, and attaches to him. So she grew up trying to be Oden and stand up to her father. Because she doesnt know any better she thinks she is Kaido's son. At least thats the way i saw it.
Haven't read manga to this point but that's how it is. There is similar situation in Haganai and another one in Mayo Chiki. Not 100% sure but check those out.
@KazekTV it is not a stretch by any means for Oda to have this type of situation, but the people who think Kaido is out of the kindness of his, the strong over everything, heart is doing that for Yamato is just completely out of character for him.
Yamato isn't just identifying as a man, she's identifying as an entire person who just so happens to have been a man. She's not saying she's a "man" every time she introduces herself, she's saying she's 'Oden', going so far as calling momo "my son". She's just a product of a lifetime of abuse and found a way to escape her fate through Oden's journal. Also she could just be completely bonkers.
This is how I’ve always looked at it. Yamato is not exactly transgender, not directly anyway. They’re something new altogether and I wasn’t sure if the trans community would support it since it seems fundamentally different from trans. Of course, you don’t need to be the same as someone to support them, but trans issues are a sensitive topic for some people and it being so close, but so different could be tricky. Regardless, the trans community takes the position that sex and gender aren’t necessarily connected, so I’m surprised this cover page was so controversial. Oda including Yamato with other females isn’t inconsistent with their identity. It would be pretty cool if Yamato was also included on a cover spread with all the men too.
Didn't she Identify as specifically as Oden? I mean if Oden were a woman and the same situation went down, Yamato would still identify as Woman Oden. I don't think it's about gender, I think it's about the persona, their ideals or strengths and what they stood for. That kind of thing. Yamato aspires to be that kind of person, not the gender of that person.
thats exactly it, but people want to live in their delusions and push an agenda despite characters like kiku, izo, bon, ivankov, and the citizens of the kamabakka queendom existing
For the vast majority of people with any sense, Yamato identifies as Oden because he is someone she admires or even idealizes, and perhaps even because he is a sort of father figure. But these people are so completely biased by their way of thinking which revolves solely around gender/self-identity/etc that they can't even comprehend that concept.
The Yamato gender discussion always baffled me because for anyone with the slightest of reading comprehension it was always obvious that Yamato was a "she". Cannonical trans characters in One piece (Kiku and Morley) were described as "men with the heart of a woman", aka males that identified as women. Yamato was never said to be a "woman with the heart of a man", she was a woman roleplaying as another person (Oden), and that person just so happened to be a man.
So lemme get this straight, japanese tomboy nuance was lost in translation and because of that twitter freaks "claimed" Yamato as trans, when oda clarifies otherwise they go ballistic. Am i right?
That about sums it up. They just can't accept that it's connected to Japanese history and has nothing to do with Yamato being trans. If these twittards knew anything about Japanese history they would have realised that the only reason Kaido calls Yamato his son is because only man could became the Shogun but Kaido didn't have a son so he raised Yamato as a boy in order to put her in the position of Shogun one day.
honestly us a community have no place to say anything about odas discissions on HIS story, if he wants to make yamato a woman then we should accept it and vice versa 🤷🏾♂
Don’t threaten Oda’s life for doing nothing wrong here. It’s okay if you want to head canon something as long as you aren’t like one of these people. I don’t have an issue with trans characters in anime and stuff like that either as long as it’s not done for pushing an agenda or anything like that. That being said, if Oda says Yamato isn’t trans then she isn’t trans.

I like how their proof of Yamato being a man is only stuff said in the past when she was under Kaido's grasp. He was abusive, downright evil to the point that a book written by Oden gave her hope and strength and used his image to be strong, like Ussop back when he wore his Sniper God mask. As a half Japanese guy that lives in America, this most likely was a bad translation or a misunderstanding by English speakers; there are masculine and feminine ways to formally or informally say things. Atashi, Atai, Watashi are typically feminine while Ore, Boku and some others are masculine but that doesn’t mean that they are a male or female if they use the other. For example, in Ultra man way back in the day Tarou (this super manly giga chad) would say watashi instead of masculine words and no one cared and still knew he was a he. I think the translators just had a hard time getting across that she speaks more like a tomboy TBH.
It was not bad translation, its plain made up shit for their agenda. Most people never read or listen the original source, let alone understand the multiple referings in that language. For me it just happend that i noticed diffrences in sub, and what actual got said in some animes. Im not claiming to understand everything, but the problem is people just do not sim,ple translate what get said, they try to implement what they think someone said. The same story we had with Najimi Osana from Komi San Wa Komyushou Desu. Everyone know, and it is a running gag, he is a boy, but the western world twistet it into their trans agenda. Get it through your bird brain, the Japanese have their own culture where people like kiku are cross-dressers but not confused about who they truly are.
The most stupidest thing that nobody is actually acknowledging is that referring to oneself and your offspring with masculine pronouns is something that is very common among royalties in medieval japan, even when they are obviously female, and also that royalties often crossdressed to thwart assassination attempts, so it was very common for noble scions to fake being girls until they have been confirmed as successors, while at the same time referring to themselves as male. So saying that yamato is trans based only on some pronouns, after the manga has been translated(which means that there will obviously be some inaccuracies due to language barriers), is not only dumb, it's also culturally insensitive. lmao
