Gloriosa being a former member of Rocks' crew sheds light on why she found so impressive that a man with conqueror's haki like Luffy would bow his head for the good of others without hesitation. That's something that no one in that crew full of conquerors would've done, specially Rocks.
yep. that also set ODA and one piece apart. he could've focused on the "cool" part of god valley like other anime/manga. but he wanted to show us the human side of the story.
the fact you wrote such a comment, it makes me think you had been through a similar shit. or you just way too observant got a strong attention to details cause; It is a true feeling; I lived a whole week eating the same dish to survive and then I finally could move to a better place, on my first meal I was shedding tears of joyfulness unconsciously while eating. I still know how that feels. today I am in a way way better place, that is why when I see ppl throw food it always takes me as a shock, my mind can't comprehend such.
I love the way Oda recontextualize Kuma's character and powers. More than 15 years ago Kuma was introduced as an unfeeling cyborg Warlord, that devastated Luffy, his crew and us readers with his overwhelming devil fruit abilities. But now seeing Kuma's tragic past and his sweet and caring demeanor amidst the literal hell he's experiencing is truly heart breaking. Add to that how and why he got his fruit. The same powers that tortured and almost killed Zoro, split everyone in the crew up, destroyed Thriller Bark and took down Little Oars Jr. with little to no effort, saved hundreds of slaves and relieved people of their pain. What an amazing character development and writing.
@@antimics maybe he can just manifest the pain as a bubble like what he did with Luffy's pain and his memory and It'll just be a bubble until someone touches it. Like what Zoro did.
@@antimicsmaybe its more on how zoro proves his resolve to his crew. How he is willing to sacrifice or take all the burden of luffy. He was there as a warlord ( a government dog). If they were just a bunch of no ones he would have just captured or killed them. And maybe zoro decision contributed to saving them in saobody
The Hands of Liberation... Without those hands, there is no Luffy. In Sabaody, The Hands of Liberation started a chain reaction that eventually lead to the rebirth of Nika. Probably in Egghead too
Speaking about Kuma being a martyr it’s so beautiful to me that even decades after the god valley incident Kuma still wears a target on his shirt. But instead of it being on his back like he and the rest of the kids have it on this chapter, he voluntarily wears it on his chest, showing he’s accepted his role as a matyr
Those last few panels where ginny was crying saying "my tummy is full" almost brought some tears. There is nothing more heart touching, at least in oda's story, than a child crying from the happiness of knowing what being full felt like😢❤.
And in all honesty I'm starting to think rocks could've been luffy mixed with a little bit of early Belamy. But there was a Big news Morgan type character (maybe Morgan's himself) that was turning even his good deeds into tragedies, or they were in the wrong place at the wrong time and said screw let's take the hate and fight everyone😂
It's kinda funny, all it took was a shadowy figure with an evil grin, the long assumed fact that he fought with the "good guys" (Roger + Garp) in God Valley, and the fact that he had current-day antagonists in his crew. I might be misremembering this, but did Oda ever even infer that they were actually 'evil' pirates?
@kaizokuo5850 "they were a crew of monsters lead by a devil among men" I think is what they say about them, so a lot of these "monsters" but it's kind of how big news Morgan's turns all of the straw hats W's into monstrous acts??
I wouldn’t be surprised if Mihawk was related to a celestial dragon or gods knight family like Shanks, and has a disdain for the strong overkilling the weak. Oda seems to be changing the one piece live action to be more direct with the long term story. For example, the prominent presence of Garp and Koby shortly after Hachinosu in the manga. Given Mihawk and Shank’s chemistry they will both know about what went down on God Valley and the both probably loathed the events.
@@ldptdogbone9334 oda was completely against the whole garp thing in the live action and its the thing he hates the most about it too but he let it go through
@@TritoXDreally? All I’ve been hearing about the one piece is that they did exactly what oda wanted, but that seemed really weird to me- do you have a source? I’d love to have that on hand
There was a cool callback to Marineford in this chapter. In Marineford Ivankov says that no one has forgotten her face while fighting Kuma. When Ivankov leaves in this chapter Kuma says: "I'll never forget you" and Ivankov replies: "No one ever does" Hit me in the feels.
Not only that, when Garp smacked Marco to the ground it was Ivankov who commented on his title as 'Hero of the marines'. The pure shock not only came from Garp's reputation alone but probably also because he saw the guy fight in his *prime* which would've been a terrifying thing to witness.
I really like this idea that Roger doesn`t have a devil fruit, because he was saving himself for Nika Nika no Mi, but it evaded him as he was not the one meant to have it. It would also explain why Shanks supported Luffy so much, as the fruit chose him.
Watching all of the Rock's pirates together in one pannel feels soooo overwhelming, almost unfair. It is like watching the 2006 football Brazil team. Except, well, they are not actually a team, but still, just seeing them together is intimidating.
Just want to say, your scripts are always a roller coaster of emotion to listen to. As much of an impact the chapter itself had, your deductions, connections and hypothesis makes the experience even better. Can't wait for more.
The idea that Bonnie was a Big Mom clone was fun for a while, but it is looking more and more like she is just actually Kumas daughter and i am more then ok with that.
That "target" is also a Celtic cross, a simbol depicted with a Celtic god called Lugh whom wielded a spear an a sword and was a Sun/Light god with his epithet being "of the long arm"
@@Elchinodawnkuma's father and mother death too, they look so optimistic despite being chained and being a slave, they gave hope to kuma and molded him into the great person he became
Oda: Hey look it’s Kuma and Ivankov’s backstory, cool huh? Audience: Whats that behind them? Oda: Oh nothing, just future King of the Pirates Gol D Roger, Dark King Rayleigh, Rocks D Xebec, Shiki, 3/4 future Emperors of the Sea, 1 Emperor of the Sea’s genocidal daddy, Prime Garp, and Saint Saturn, no biggie. Anyway y’all ever heard of churches?
@@Phantom_Zone 1096 could have been a heartwrenching, but at the same time wholesome and sweat story of Kuma and Ginny. Why Oda had to include the begging of the God Valley incident is beyond me. I couldn't properly enjoy either because of that.
Hey Liam, the rock’s pirate, we see at 4:43 in your video is actually a character we already saw in the story at thriller bark, he was one of the zombie generals who had a bottom half of an elephant (if i remember well) and had the exact same helmet as the one we are seeing in this small panel (which hyped me up because when we saw his zombie form in thriller bark he was the most imposing zombie general in thriller bark). I had a feeling that this guy was a rocks pirate before because we see many pirates who were/ could’ve been in the rocks pirate (i.e captain john, silver axe who may be the zombie wielding the giant axe). So we can conclude that this guy (at 4:43) isn’t ochouku/Wang zi because Blackbeard took control of hachinosu one or two years after the events which happened on thriller bark where we saw the corpse of this still unnamed member of the rocks pirate.
I'm not sure if I'm just slow but your points toward the end of the video about him living in the church just helped me make the connection that Bartholomew was the original name of Saint Nathaniel, a Christian/Catholic saint, and one of the Twelve Disciples who was considered a martyr, being flayed and beheaded for converting a king to Christianity; such a strong throughline to what we are witnessing to Kuma's story right now. This manga is so deep that even after years and years, I'm making connections! You're such a scholar - truly inspirational!
@@tobiaswedinthing is the clone hypothesis is strong due to the fact that in japanese Vegapunk called Bonnie a toddler or a word used for very small children. Is possible that Bonnie dies early and they clone her and implant the late Bonnie memories on a new body thus Vegapunk calling Bonney a child
@@Ryquard1 If you ever talked to or heard old people they tend to call anyone and everyone kids, youngsters and so on. I think you're over thinking things here. If you haven't noticed, Vegapunk and Saturn who are the only two who has called her a child are very old themselves.
I love how GOda put Morgan as the representative of the ones who always making things more problematic than it should be, giving headlines, naming the group's, or even stirring public opinion as he wants.
One of my favorite things in this chapter is the fact Streusen is in there and hardly anyone noticed just due to the Allstate lineup of the rest of the Rocks Crew (he’s to the bottom left of Whitebeard, barely in that panel lol). Another thing I love is Bonney’s crew is given just the tiniest bit of depth due to this. Sure it’s just inferred but that’s what I love about this series. It’s gone on for so long that at any point even unnamed characters can have inferred depth or motivations.
I still can’t believe that rock and log eating fiend made it off God Valley alive. I mean, big mom would want him for his fruit (and he’s Perosperos dad maybe????) but still like wtf
The fact that if ginny wasn't there the whole story from beginning would change is insane She literally is the reason why Shanks ended up with Roger if she wasn't there we could have met a celestial dragon shanks
Yea its crazy how shes the 3rd most pivotal character in the series right after lily and joyboy based on crucial events that needed to happen for luffy or any future joyboys to stand a chance against imu or blackbeard, right after her, is roger, shanks, kuma, ivankov and law. Without roger and shanks luffy would probs be a bandit, without kuma the strawhats would be captured or killed on saboady and without ivankov and law luffy would of died on impel down or marineford
You should actually worry, Kuma's flashback has moved on from that island and there is absolute zero narrative reason to go back to God Valley so R.I.P ever getting a Rocks face reveal or any nugget of who fought who there.
When they mentioned in the chapter 'that' being taken from Hachinosu, my immediate thought was of the Nika fruit. If the Nika fruit had been safeguarded on Pirate Island and the Marines suddenly snatched it up, the island and it's leadership would certainly be upset.
It’s so crazy to see Roger, who’s always been this larger than life character, going up against impossible odds in the same way Luffy does now. Whitebeard became his biggest rival later on, but here he is challenging an entire crew of Whitebeard level opponents. Legend.
He's litterally larger than life too- its easy to forget because so many of the characters around him are but he is like 8 ft tall. Remember oden's wife was a normal sized woman but she only came up to oden's waist, Garp and Roger are close in height etc. the point being that it would be really funny to litterally see Luffy among these characters because he is normal human size, which is ironic considering Roger was like shanks, the guy going around and being amazing with no fruit powers just skill backed up by Haki.
Shiki is close. But BM and Kaido were not in their prime. WB clearly the top dog of that crew alongside Rocks. Heck he doesn't even view Xebec as his captain. @@ranjoso
@@AntiCanchire read the tcb scan she clearly refers to her as the elder and sees herself as Kuma's big bro saying "now then, since I'm four years your elder" then two kids throwing rocks at kuna say "what! No way you are only nine"
I imagine it'd be pretty awkward if Captain John had the same epithet while he was on Rocks' crew. In my head canon, we're seeing the days of "Long John" the pirate.
Consider these parallels between rocks and straw hats Luffy || rocks || captain who attracts the strongest Zoro || whitebeard || drinks possible wing of the captain Sanji || Shikki || flies and argues with the right hand Nami || Linlin || witches who control weather Robin || Stussy || assassin with demon powers Franky || wang zhi || both look like giant tanks Chopper || Kaiod || young zoan ‘monster’ Brook || Captain John ||swordsman, captain of their own crew at a point, fights after death Vivi || Gloriosa || both Monarchs who left their country to be pirates Jinbe || fishman || both fishman Usopp || Shady guy || least hyped 😂
I'm pretty sure that we do actually know Ginny's age. She specifically mentions that she is 4 years older than Kuma, and then the kids poking fun at Kuma say "there's no way you're only 9" So at that moment, Ginny is 13
The moment of Happiness between Kuma and Ginny is basically there heavenly commercial break, but by next week’s chapter we will be going back to our…regularly scheduled program.
Puts ivankov shock at Kuma attacking him at Marineford into perspective. Seeing a long time friend turning rogue must be hell of a heartbreak. And damn Elder Nyon was a looker back in her days.
I've read the chapter quite a lot of times already and the last pannels are making me more and more sad with each reading, knowing they have their moment of peace... aaaah it's breaking me agaaaain! 😢
I will be honest, seeing young Garp and young Rodger brought up old reminded me of the theories about those two being brothers. I know it is unlikely but they both look surprisingly similar in this chapter.
That was a great chapter. One of the best. A lot of emotional highs and lows and tons of questions presented, but also some that were answered. The two panels of Kuma chopping up the firewood and carrying it to the town to sell choked me up a little bit. Such an innocent and unassuming scene that it's just beautiful.
This chapter genuinely had me stunned and I gotta agree with you on film RED, I would’ve loved to see that revealed in the manga instead of the movie a lot more.
You should’ve talked about Kuma being called “The Hand of Liberation”. Makes me feel like it’s possible Kuma and Luffy’s fruits are “friends” for lack of better terms. Also makes it sound like maybe there’s multiple mythic zoans that the WG erased from the records and Kuma’s fruit is one of them alongside Luffy’s because they were seen as compatible or the will of the fruits were likely to work together regardless of who got the fruits.
Liam, i truly love your videos, while i started reading the one piece manga from my local library when i was 9, now i am 17 and still read the mangas that are released and the chapters weekly. this weeks chapter was insane!! your content adds to the life oda-sama already gives to one piece. however, i don’t appreciate how much you shit on ace because when i was reading the mangas i was heartbroken when ace died (i was 10) and ace until recently was one of my favorite characters(besides zoro of course).
Amazing how kuma started as a tyrant villain in our eyes and over time we've slowly liked him more and more until he's legit one of the most heroic, noble and loving people in the entire series.
It makes me think that "Tyrant" title is because either the WG tries to paint him as a villain that took over the sorbet kingdom, or he willingly takes on that role to make sure the kingdom doesn't get punished for his actions.
@@timothycarney9652 I've heard that first theory but I really like the second theory. Lines up with his religious nature too that he would sacrifice his reputation for others
One overlooked member of the Rocks gathering panel is Streusen, Big Mom’s present day-head chef But it makes sense. The Cook Cook fruit is invaluable for long sea voyages where food is inconsistent and nutrition is more important than taste. He’s a very useful logistical asset to recruit
It actually took me a second to realize the gravity of Straw Hat Roger. "Oh he has the straw hat, yeah that makes sense, he hasn't met shanks yet" "OH, he has THE STRAW HAT"
Someone give kuma a hug. He definitely deserves it. Same with bonney they got so screwed over by the world government. Wow oda you managed to outdo yourself in this chapter by giving us so many connections established long ago.
I dont think they arrived for a specific devil fruit. Lets not forget that devil fruits in general are still rare, mystical and powerful. And we have (potentially) 6 of them in the same place! Regardless if they are trash tier fruits, they are still rare.
The story in this chapter alone can be a stand alone manga, better than some other series, it had all the emotions and excitement, and that ending 🥲. Truly GODA
Kuma was my beloved favorite from the start! Actually he was the first character from OP i've ever seen. I was very intrigued by this giant figure holding a bible and he might have induced my decision to go on this journey. I felt Luffy's sadness at Sabaody, but I myself felt sad when Kuma says farewell to him. He's (was?) just the best.
Seeing Gloriosa as part of the Rocks pirates blew my mind and the chapter did make me wonder something. If Roger gave the straw hat to Shanks and Shanks gave it to Luffy, who gave the hat to Roger? Also is Oda ever going to tell us what happened to Luffy’s mother.
My theory on Luffy's mom and, and dad/grandfather (the other) below: Luffy's mom "is" IMU! Or at least, Imu is a devil fruit that controls the one that consumes it. Right now its in Luffy's mom, it wants Vivi next. As for Luffy's dad, I don't think Dragon is a true Monkey, he was "adopted" into the family after he and Luffy's mom fell in love... you see, Dragon's REAL father, is ROCKS. Luffy's grandparents are Garp D. Monkey and Rocks D. Xebec!!
In my Assumption when Big Mom was shouting in the past asking where kaido was(Kaido BigMom Flashback in Hachinosu). She wasnt going to ask why he didnt help at Godvalley/Where he was at the Godvalley Incident. Instead that he just stole the fruit that big mom captured from the island and dipped away. Which made her obviously mad because she stated earlier "Finders Keepers".
She says he owes her for it, so it could mean that he stole it, but since we do see her treating him as a little brother like figure it could just be something like that, and she regularly goes and bothers him. It would fit with their team up in wano- their initial clash is because of sibling like rough housing but scaled up to their power level, but then they make up and ally to each other because they do genuinely care about each other... thats a sweet interpretation but it makes the fact that they ended up as brutal dictators that needed to be overthrown pretty sad.
Its possible big mom saved Kuma from Saturn because big mom's dose have her all race dream thing and she may overheared that Kuma is a special race so she cant have him dead, as she fights Saturn Kaido join up and ate the fruit some how.
@@reves3333 Frankly I was surpised when Big Mom hit Ivanov, as we see with the Tama Linlin has a soft spot for young enough kids. Maybe she hadn't developed that motherly side yet, or maybe she didn't recognize Ivanov as a kid, or at least one young enough to trigger her that way. The whole time she was O-lin made me sad because she could have been a tremendous force for good if she was raised right, instead she maintained the worst of her childish behaviors, a childish selfishness and ignorance of other's conditions, twisted by age and experience.
@@timothycarney9652 she only had like 30kids at that time and they are all like babies so she probably didnt have the motherly instincts yet ,she didnt flat out kill ivankov tho so that is a good start and its abit hard to see ivankov as a kid like the size and the size of the head. it would be pretty cool if we get some kind of "redemption" or at least consistency type of thing with her ideals? cause the thing Kuma just said dose have some alignment with her own ideals even if her version is like really warped like 80% of big mom is basicly "The road to hell is paved with good intentions" there is also this thing that big mom might understand kuma because she is born diffrent too but trying to not see herself as born special? there is also a religious theme that shares with these 2 characters the whole nun orphanage miracle thing with big mom and kuma with whole bibble and church prayer thing, plus Saturn is like the literal devil here it would be fiting if big mom just cant stand Saturn and fights him because of her ideals
I swear ODA knows sooo much secret about this world and he's giving it to us through manga. One Piece story/world has events that correlates with our world events. It's just mind blowing. I'm saying this because I'm so much into world history, knowing the truth and every time ODA amazes me with how he does it. Soo much similarities with our world history. Only if people knew. Hats off to god ODA!!
Actually we do know Ginny is 13yo, saying herself she's 4 years older than Kuma and him being bullied as "no way you are only 9yo". What she did is still incredibly impressive for a child her age.
Oda is playing with me feelings. To be honest i did not care for Kuma's fate that much. But holy shit now I SOO want for him to be saved somehow. This guy doesn't deserve the hell he will go through.
The way the celestial dragons called the hunted "rabbits" made me remember how Mihawk said "I don't hunt rabbits with a cannon" the first time he fougth Zoro. Maybe there is some connection to be made here
In the panel with all the Rocks pirates lined up, right above Whitebeard there is a figure jumping ahead. He also seems to have the same kind of weapon that Blackbeard has used, those 3 claw knuckles and his hat looks similar to Buggys hat with hair tassles. I think that's Rocks.
Kuma is gonna end Saturn soon. What if the next murder festival is gonna be at Elbaf, since the Island has all the knowledge of Ohara. It would make sense for Oda to finally reveal what happened in God Valley during Elbaf.
I now believe that instead of rocks being revealed to be an evil genius mastermind, he is instead going to be a buggy type character. A character who has stumbled into success or notoriety for a reason not known yet. Although things could change with the official translation, whitebeard calls rocks and idiot and a moron. Stussy in response, says too whitebeard “not you too.” This would be an ultimate bait and switch from Oda, and he’s already laid the foundation for it with Cross Guild, who are just that. The heavy hitters on the rocks pirates are all benefiting from rocks’ knowledge or notoriety, and that’s why they’re staying. In chapter 957, a marine said it’s hard to imagine one man leading 3 of the four emperors as we know them today, which is why I think it would be such a classic oda moment for rocks to be a goofball character.
Could be... I think Rocks is in truth, Luffy's grandfather = the father to Dragon... Dragon is Monkey in name alone, because the love between him and Luffy's mom... There's a reason Oda hasn't revealed Rocks' appearance yet.
ivankov is so amazing in this chapter , his unbreakable will and even his plan to go for the devil fruits , and him being ready to sacrifice himself so koma and the rest can survive, when he faced death (with his massive face) he still held to a pure goal.
Excited to see the events that lead Kuma and Ivankov to get the fruits so easily. I feel like even with all the chaos going on, or even BECAUSE of the chaos going on, a top marine, or gods knight would have been ordered to guard the chests. It's not a big event, but i just wanna see how that person got lured away. Someone from rocks or rogers crew inadvertently changed the course of history from it
I feel that this chapter showed 2 General Zombies or maybe even 3! Of course there is Captain John then there was the guy shown in a helmet from the Rocks Pirates which looked really similar to General Zombie with the same helmet and beard and if the last guy is supposed to be silver axe then there is a General Zombie with a literal silver axe!
In this chapter Oda was really secretive of why the Rocks Pirates came to the island as Whitebeard said. I feel its the same reason as why the Roger Pirates showed up there as well. Now heres the big question could there be a Road Poneglyph on that island?! As its Roger and Rocks we are talking about here and we even know that Roger survived that God Valley and became Pirate King!
The WG did something at Hachinosu to get Rocks riled up, according to garp- My bet is that they either took a Poneglyph, a fruit, or an individual(just so we can get some humanization of Rocks) one of my theories was that Blackbeard was involved as a kid here, but he is only one year older than shanks, who gets found as a baby around this time, so if that's the case then... My guess is that Blackbeard's mom was taken and is running around carrying him and after this she makes it out but has to raise him under her name rather then his dad's- like Ace was Portgas D. Ace instead of Gol D. Ace. That's just if Teach is Xibec's kid. If it was the poneglyph that was taken, well Big Mom has one so maybe she got to keep the one the Rocks pirates had after they broke up, heck that is supposed to happen right now isn't it, she could just take the thing and head out after Rocks bites it.
Oh shit, if the fourth road poneglyph is on God Valley, Shanks probably already has it, then. Pretty sure some part of god valley is still around and accessible to Shanks cause it resembles the place he went to attend a wedding (cover story 838) and is possibly the place he got the sake to give to white beard way back when.
@@Torazuki Its probably not that location because God Valley is in West Blue, the Emperors stay around the New world, because the WG freaks out when they leave, and the others would start messing with their stuff if they weren't around. White Beard has to stay close enough to keep his promise of protection to various Islands, Kaido and Big Mom don't want anyone messing with their territory if they leave it for too long. So the Emperors largely stay in the New world, because they have vested interests that they need to protect there. So that place Shanks and Whitebeard met at is probably in the New World.
My thoughts & opinions of the chapter: 1. If Gloriosa was indeed a former servant of Rocks during the God Valley incident, then I now want to know if Hancock would've had a different view on her if she ever learned about it? 2. Although we didn't get to see Dragon in this chapter, I would like to know if you think he'll appear in the next chapter, or be saved for chapter 1100?
Servant is an odd choice of words but regardless of what rocks did to the slaves it's safe to assume not all his crew mates were as cruel nor did they condone his actions if indeed he did something I mean you have whitebeard who's generally a decent fellow on the crew and the crew doesn't get along at all to begin with And considering this event isn't well known I imagine the secluded Amazon Lilly doesn't have details either so an unborn Hancock probably never got to know about God Valley But she is always mean to gloriosa so maybe you're on to something or maybe she just doesn't like her nagging
Everyone’s waiting for Dragon, if he does appear in chapter 1100 it’s going to b epic as hell since the hype on him n if he finally meets Luffy face to face
Man,if one piece decied to start the story from this chapter and went backwords using kuma as the main charecter that story still would have been the greatest story ever written.I love how rich world oda san has created where every individual charecter has the potential to have their own rightfull manga.Just awesome.
There is actually one more Empress in-between Shakky and Hancock, who we don't know anything about. Also, in the chapter, Ginny states she is 4 years older then Kuma, who is 9, so using simple math, we can conclude she is 13.
Seeing the Rocks Pirates all together really hammers home just how monstrous this crew was. Can you imagine if these people actually liked each other and worked together??
yoooo that chapter was fire, Kuma is probably the ultimate MVP seeing through everything from the moment his wife was killed, joining the revolutionaries, he knew exactly which places would make the strawhats stronger etc. it was all planned from the beginning
Sadly I think what we just got is all we ever will get, there's no reason to go back to it now and narratively Oda literally can't without breaking the flow of the story. There's no living/active character left who was present that he can use to transition to God Valley. We will *definitely* 100% not get an entire arc.
6:28 Also Roger punked Linlin for her poneglyph. He just casually said he "took it by force," like it's easy taking poneglyph secrets from Big Mom.. You're so right about the movies.. I wish they didn't do it like that anymore.. Kaido w Ivankov fruit blows my mindbrain
