"All of the Pokémon are monsters that are just not supposed to exist." I really like that idea, actually. It's a dark twist on an otherwise colorful and upbeat series. Nice.

It sounds like they should have had limited ammo, made enemies only require a couple bullets but be avoidable, and made healing harder, kind of like resident evil

The font looks normal on old Windows versions, it's after XP that the font for RPG Maker 2000 and 2003 went wack. Ya gotta patch it with a fontpatch. I know this because I have spent thousands upon thousands of hours in RPG Maker 2000.

Just so you know, Machamp's pattern is simply alternating right hand, then left hand and at the second phase it's right, double left and both hands twice.

This game seemed pretty good for RM2K3. It did overuse the flickering lights and screen shaking, though. You gotta give the dev some credit for working with an extremely old engine to create this, though. Nice review.

Actually, it's not only a reference to the prof Oak lab, it's Professor Oak , he's named "Professor Chen" in the game, which is the french name of "Professor Oak" ^^ Just like "Professor Orme" and "Professor Elm"

Pokemon fan games are almost always a hack of RSE or FRLG.

Considering the limitations of RM2k3, this is an extremely impressive game. You shouldn't really be expecting better because I don't think it's possible. And trust me, if the enemies were given the "walk towards the player" A.I., you'd never be able to make it past the 1st encounter.

Note at 9:38 professor chen is actually the french name of professor oak in the pokemon's game So yeah in this boss room we are actually fighting prof oak

The light flickering and the shaking on the final bosses are terrible, I don't know how anybody could play those parts.

I liked this game and had a lot more patience with it, knowing it was a free fan game. I also like how "legit" the story is if you know your gen 1 Pokedex.

Machamp follows a pattern with his fists. FIrst it's left/right repeated. Then it becomes left/left/left/both/right repeat. And his attacks hit one tile to the side, so you need to stay two tiles away from him before you strafe him

I bloody loved your playthrough of this a while ago. Your great commentary was the main thing that kept me going, to be frank.

What I enjoy most about Pokemon games is usually the lack of story and simple premise - become the greatest trainer to ever live. I'm not sure I'd enjoy this too terribly much, but great video as always.

I watched through the whole gameplay on Pikasprey Blue, so let me explain the plot! Ok, so we already know Jack is a detective who's sent to Azure City to solve the dissappearance case. It's also shown here that the case is personal to him. It's later discovered that: 1. The TMs were created from the genetics of Mew to augment human abilities, not Pokémon's. This is why Jack can use them on himself to use HM moves. 2. The TMs were tested on most of the original people who lived there. Every person that came in contact with them becomes a Pokémon. Those who become Pokémon become obsessed with Mewtwo, believing that it has the ability to not only return them to human form but also bring their loved ones back from the dead. 3. A "Serum D" is also mentioned that is implied to have turned dogs into Growlithe and lizards into Nidoran and Nidoking. 4. Jack grew up in Azure City. He later learns that his father works for the scientists that started the entire thing. Through his diary, Jack learns that he had created an antidote and then Jack drank it, which is why he doesn't turn into a Pokémon. Eventually, Jack meets Mewtwo and shoots the shit out of it, and then meets it again as "Mewthree" where it reveals it has the memories of everyone who was in the town and that it can alter reality. It makes Jack go blind for a while while trying to get him to give up, but Jack talks it into having a "fair fight" in which Jack promptly chases its teleporting ass down and uses Cut until it dies. He then blows its head up, figures out he can teleport, teleports to his car, and heads home. A cutscene then plays of him on a phone call with a guy in a suit who's been teleporting around and saying cryptic BS, where he says "I understand" and leaves. A different cutscene plays of a policeman watching him go by and trying to figure out what happened, in which Jack tells him he's going to Johto and "it looks like I'm going to have to save the world again" and walks off. The game ends with the officer asking what his problem is to himself.

I personally like the music that occurs when you're outside. It actually gives me chills.

Pokemon invasion! That's the game I've been looking for years to watch.

Maybe the challenge of the last room is that you have to do the fight in a room not necessarily built for it.. If the rest of the game is easy and repetitive this makes sense. Also if this is just a warped nightmare, which I think that's clearly the idea here and why this game takes place in a regular world still and only just has recognizable and warped pokemon and stuff, but if this is just a nightmare then it would make sense that the rooms and many things mirror the thing he's having a nightmare of which here is clearly pokemon

i always thought this series was supposed to be a prequel to pokemon as a whole. not really sure why i have to say, though, watching this review reminds me why i adore this series so much. as imperfect as it is, i was so mindblown by the plot and gameplay, and i still am. i feel like there’s so much potential lore to it, though. it’s as if even though it looks like a completed puzzle, there are still pieces missing. nightmare is by far one of my absolute favorite pokemon fan games, as well as the only fan game that made my heart race from anxiety and excitement. snakewood was a jumbled mess; escape from lavender town is nothing but an epileptic’s nightmare. nightmare’s challenges didn’t leave me angry like snakewood’s did and its ambience is far creepier than any lavender town creepypasta rom hack could hope to be.

I was watching/listening to this video while cooking, with my phone some distance away from my eyes. And I swear that I thought you censored most of the text (in a blobby way) to prevent spoilers until you mentioned the bad font and I took a closer look.

So, I've played a bit of another fan game called Pokémon Insurgence, and from what I've seen, it does a very good job of mixing darker themes into a more traditional Pokémon experience (and has an option to not have the darker themes). I'm kind of hoping either Nintendo's had a change of heart regarding good fan games, or they don't catch wind of it, otherwise it'll be nuked like Uranium. Pun intended.

Great video! You should check out Super Pokemon Eevee Edition for another interesting Pokemon fan game. Its got an awesome Final Fantasy influenced game play with an incredibly meta story-line that really pays homage to the pokemon game universe. Keep up the good work!

Since the release of Sun & Moon and that Mimikyu trial I dream about a crossover between Fatal Frame and Pokémon, I know it's a bit surreal because Pokémon is mostly for kids but I want to see someone doing an hack rom like that, I'm planning to try doing it myself but it'll be difficult since I don't have any idea how I will insert a camera function inside of an GBA rom.. But maybe when Nintendo wakes up and realizes of the potential Fatal Frame franchise has, this crossover could be a thing

You need the MSGothic font. RPG Makers default msgothic font is messed up, so downloading or using the systems fixes it.

I reckon this game should get a remake and developed by several people. It has a lot of potential.

I rage quit and delete after I lost to Prof. Oak 6 times in a row because your character decides to randomly stop shooting and turn the wrong way. Not sure why but whenever the boss heals himself your character can't shoot or heal and you just have to wait and probably take a ton of damage

In Pokemon Uranium check the old lady house in the wheatfields, the one that heal your pokemons (First visit), interact with the fridge. You will laught your ass off, Nice one Devs.

I hope there are other Pokemon survival horror games. The idea just seems to fit well with pokemon.

I think to emulate broken lights and electricity, the Creator should let the lights flicker one time then make them dim. That way it's difficult to see but not outright impossible, then give the player the availability of the flashlight or TM flash.
