This is easily 1-2 years of practice material. Thanks Jay.

Easily explaining those advanced concepts is another way of showing us how insanely good you are at drums. Like all the stuff you did with tesseract is not enough… I’m so happy I found this channel!

When I was just learning I had to drive to the music store and once a week get to sit with a pro for the quickest 30 minutes of my life while my parents paid a small fortune. Now, I get TesseracT’s Jay Postones for 30 minutes whenever I want, wherever I want for free.

These are some of my favorite drum lesson videos. Good music, good teacher, good stuff. Your playing always sounds impossible and too random, but I'm happy to know how the magic works and still not be able to play it😂
@JayTesseracT
@JayTesseracT Год назад
The first time I heard meshuggah I thought the same thing… it’s so random! But I promise it isn’t - there’s almost always a pattern that repeats at an odd point, and it’s about learning how to hear that displaced ostinato against whatever pulse you’re keeping.

This is how I explain Tool riffs on guitar when people get hung up on the exact time signature or the exact way it is counted. "You need to feel it, not count it, keep playing, it'll make sense." I'm showing them tablature with timing, focusing on the patterns.

Such great explanation on these lessons. I love odd time signatures but figuring out how to write or play a groove in them and incorporate displacements was actually brain-wrenching, but this really helped! You’re a great inspiration to both my playing and musical choice.

this is great!!! i kinda started the other way around--inspired by how you guys write and play (among other also amazing bands like periphery, animals, to name a few). i was always troubled on how i could explain those odd pulses but still the same time and how i could play it with my band. how you explain them. man. you're the djentest teacher as far as i know.

Hey Jay, thank you so much for doing these videos. i hope you know this is gold for non drummers as well! Explaining such complex concepts in simple ways is an art in it self! I was wondering if it would be possible maybe in a future video to demonstrate the phrase after the second chorus from exile as well. (Lyrics"What's the confliction between heart and mind...") I was always wondering whats happening in there and im sure other people are too! Thank you for your contribution in music!!

Hey Jay While burying the beater Do you ever have any issues with double triggering or double hits ?
@JayTesseracT
@JayTesseracT Год назад
No, I’ve set the sensitivity on my Roland module so that those tiny rebounds don’t trigger a sound. I play the same way on my acoustic kit. It’s never been an issue even in recordings - even though I know some drummers and educators would get you to stop playing this way… it works fine for me.
@rite2mukund

@@JayTesseracT I’ve always buried the beater here and there and always had this issue. Lately I’ve been keeping the beater off but I’m definitely gonna try this Thank you so much !

Is it just talent or something else that is required? The insides of my brain seem to itch. Also how do you 'measure' how fast or slow the 'other' rhythm so that the initial count falls on the same time? And polyrhythm is dead easy.. 😢😢 Btw, you are a good teacher and an awesome musician.
@JayTesseracT
@JayTesseracT Год назад
In the same way that some athletes have a physical advantage, some of us have a mental advantage too. I have always found it pretty easy to hear and interpret numbers rhythmically - which is likely functional autism aka ‘talent’ - but these ‘feels’ can be learned too with time. Slow it down and place it on a grid - for example with the 3/4 polyrhythm, create a grid of 3x4 - 12 beats, and use the numbers to figure out where each of the other number lands within that 12-count: 1+3 = 4 4+3 = 7 7+3 = 10 So the 4’s will land on the 1, 4, 7 and 10 of a 12-note count. Do the same for the 3’s using the 4 to measure the timing: 1+4 = 5 5+4 = 9 So, 1, 5, and 9. Play one of those counts on your left hand, and the other on your right, all the way up to 12, then repeat. You can do this to work out any polyrhythm 👍🏻
