Highlights: ✦Kathryn Goodenough talks about the importance of lithium pegmatites in Africa for low-carbon transition. • Lithium pegmatites are important for the low-carbon transition. •Kathryn Goodenough is reviewing lithium pegmatites in Africa with her colleague Richard Judith Kinnaird. •She gives a high-level overview of lithium pegmatites. •Lithium and rare earth elements are critical metals used in modern technology. ✦Lithium from hard rock sources, particularly pegmatite, comes from Australia, China, and Zimbabwe. •Half of the world's lithium supply comes from South America's evaporative brines. •The other half of the supply comes from hard rock sources, mainly pegmatite. •The majority of lithium mined from pegmatite comes from Australia, with some production in China and Zimbabwe. ✦Lithium pegmatites can form from the partial melting of metal sedimentary crust and require an appropriate source of minerals to produce rare metal-enriched pegmatite. Click to expand •Two models of lithium pegmatite formation exist: from parental granite bodies and from partial melting of the local crust. •Lithium pegmatites contain a wide range of different ore minerals, including silicate minerals like Spodumene, Petalite, Lepidolite, and other lithium and phosphates. •Recognizing all the different minerals in lithium pegmatites is challenging, but necessary when working with these rock types. ✦The video explains the geological history of Africa and the distribution of lithium pegmatites across the continent. •Africa has central cores pushed together over time through orogenic events. •Lithium pegmatites are found in different regions of Africa, including the Kalahari Craton, West Africa, Central Africa, and Namibia. •The pegmatites have been mostly dated and studied by Frank Miller and his team at the University of Leoben. ✦The Arcadia project in Southern Africa has the region's largest JORC-compliant lithium reserve. •The reserve contains 26.9 million tonnes at 1.3% lithium oxide. •The pegmatites in the project have low iron helpful petalite for ceramics and spodumene useful for battery production. •The project has a series of stacked pegmatites, which is typical for LCT pegmatite prospects in Africa. ✦The section discusses the age and distinctive features of lithium pegmatites in Africa. Click to expand ✦There are three main lithium projects in Africa: Lelau in Mozambique, Caribou in Namibia, and Contigo in Ethiopia. •Pan-African pegmatites are enriched in tin or tantalum, but not necessarily lithium. •Lithium-enriched areas are substantially younger than Pan-African granites and geochemically different. •Not all LCT pegmatites are related to parental granites. ✦The speaker discusses the replacement of quartz with growth and the disruption of their work due to COVID-19. •Samples from camera TV have been worked on by Richard Shaw. •Some samples are still in Harare due to the lockdown. •Muscovite chemistry is a good indicator of the prospective for lithium. •They hope to build up more data to show how muscovite chemistry can be used.

How many actual African people does this help? Does African human resources mean labor only? Do African people own the mining rights to the minerals? What is your organization going to do to insure the African people are not exploited by foreign influences or African dictator influences? These are legitimate questions that should be widely broadcast. My best regards in your endeavor to help the world and African communities.
