Odile variation from Swan Lake 〜Marius Petipa〜
The Odile variation has 3types of choreography.
The 1st one, which now I’m dancing, is Petipa. Its tempo and music go slowly and softly, but has crazy pirouette combo from the very beginning.
The 2nd one is “Yury Nikolayevich Grigorovich “
It starts with fascinating music and requires some fouettés even at the beginning of variation.
The last one is Vladimir Pavlovich Burmeyster. It uses same music as Grigorovich. However, this variation contains lots of jumping which is totally different choreograph from Grigorovich.
This variation, which now I'm showing you, starts with smooth music. While performing, I was imagining that the audience is gradually getting evil magic power and, finally, we fall under a magic spell and become obsessed her.
There are a lot of versions of Swan Lake because of difference in interpretation.
So please let me know which version you like :)
When dancing Burmeyster’s version of Odile with Grand Pad de deux, Adagio dances to the music of Tchaikovsky Pad de deux☺️
The most important thing in this variation is the expressiveness 💪
Next is the pirouette 🌪
Odile must impersonate Odette and tempt the prince.
Therefore, it is very difficult because it has to express the attraction and tactics that Odette does not have through dance.
It is very difficult because we have to perform that expression during hard variation.
You have to dance a little differently from Odette in terms of eyes, arms, everything!
She is a charming woman who seduces the prince and makes him promise to marry.
She looks confident, but in a hurry for some reason. It feels like she is thinking “I’ll beat Odette!”.
Odile is Rothbart's daughter. However, in "Swan Lake" that I saw when I was little, she was introduced only as “Odile the Black Swan”, not as Rothbart's daughter.
When I was young, I wondered if Odile was threatened by Rothbart and forced to seduce the prince unwillingly.
If I were Odile and Rothbart told me, "If things go well, I'll turn you back into a human," I would definitely (but unwillingly) do my best!
Even if she's the daughter of Rothbart, is she able to do her best for her father? 🤔
Maybe she secretly likes the prince and feels jealous of Odette. That’s why she helped her father! ?
In the scene where she throws the bouquet, it's possible that she did so because she didn’t like how the prince falls in love with Odette, not with her.
Maybe she got angry at Odette because Odette was cherished (?) by Rothbart and the prince, and helped Rothbart! ? … There are a lot of possible interpretations ☺️ How do you think?
Techniques are also important to keep that expressiveness ☺️
It's amazing if you can make some instant movements of the arms and the momentary expression closely resemble Odette, instead of just expressing Odile all the time.
There are a lot of pirouettes in the choreography. This is common in any version.
At the end of the Grand pas de duex, the coda has 32 fouettés.
Fouettés are included in many pas de deux choreographies🌟 Why do we have to do such a tiring thing at the end?
Pirouettes, especially fouettés, symbolize magic, eternal love, strong emotions, and power💪
Certainly, in a sense, the black swan has a “magic power blow” that drives the prince crazy immediately after the fouetté 32 and changes the prince's expression completely and eventually makes him decide to marry her.
Don Quixote, Le Corsaire, Coppelia, etc. are performed to express the joy of finally meeting someone you love! Don Quixote and Coppelia are performed in weddings.
That's why I want to make the pirouettes in this video as fast as I can so that the magic power doesn't get interrupted 😈🌟
It’s really hard to do this expression and technique at the same time, but it's a challenging variation☺️

Tips of variation
・ High expressiveness that puzzles the prince
・ Hand movement that expresses huge wings
・ Solid techniques and varied expressions
