Day 34 thru hiking the Oregon Desert Trail. We hike out of the worst Mormon Cricket swarm I've ever seen in McDermitt, and find ourselves standing at the gates of giants. It's time to enter the infamous Owyhee Canyonlands. A massive 2 million acres, it's a fabled landscape of vast, untouched canyons that look like something out of Lord of the Rings. The hike up to the rim is briefly outstanding, and then it's into a vast sea of Sage Kansas. I coined this term along the way, describing a vast, flat landscape like Kansas, but with sagebrush instead of grass. There's more swarms of Mormon Crickets, as well as grasshoppers here in the Upper West Little Owyhee Wilderness Study Area. The evening is an excellent hike in the upper reaches of Louse Canyon and the West Little Owyhee River. It's a landscape with a primal and ancient feeling to it. A creek trickles out of snow patches clinging to the canyon walls, in this lush, very lively environment. Welcome to the Owyhees.
