Generative AI hods immense promise for revolutionising industries and solving complex problems. It can create realistic digital content without human intervention and is already being used in many fields to improve efficiency and deliver personalised content.
Generative AI also has potential negative consequences, particularly in the area of disinformation, fake news, deepfakes, and other manipulated content.
This can have significant social, political and economic consequences at scale, such as fuelling conspiracy theories, misleading public discourse and opinion, influencing elections, distorting markets and inciting violence.
Jamie Berryhill of the OECD Secretariat announced the new report "AI language models: Technological, socio-economic and policy considerations", which puts forward policy considerations associated with AI language models through the lens of the OECD AI Principles. It also includes a focus on the risks and ethical questions posed by LMs. The report also outlines government efforts around the OECD to explore policies around LMs, wit a particular focus on efficiency and protecting/strengthening non-English language models. However, questions still remain about whether policy makers can ensure that these transformative models are beneficial, inclusive and safe.
Potential paths to explore for keeping generative AI trustworthy and safe are regulation, transparent models and methods, ethical frameworks tailored to generative AI, technical standards, risk frameworks, and strategic foresight to further the political discussion.
