In this video we diagnose a Hyundai with a check engine light and a loss of power.
We also are going to compare a Oem sensor to an original one.
And in the end we fix the car of course!

Great job on the diagnosis, Dan! For electronic components I have learned that the ONLY reliable option is OEM. Even a used or remanufactured OEM component is better than a NEW aftermarket. Great video dan! Learned my lesson with aftermarket sensors. In october i had someone diagnose a bad MAF Sensor so i went into autozone thinking what the heck ill slap it on there and boom it was fixed..for now. Last week( February ) i turned on my car to go to work and immediately noticed the idle jumped around and the car smelled like gas. I thought it was just acting up and it would pass so i drove on and going down the street of my neighborhood the car would jerk on acceleration almost to the point that my head was hitting the horn!! I knew something was up but decided to go on the main road and merge onto the highway to get to work. Worst freaking mistake ever. The jerking stopped until i got to around 60 mph and everything seemed fine for 5 minutes. I pushed down the accelerator and noticed i wasnt going anywhere. All the dash lights came on and i realized the fucking car just stalled going 60mph in rush hour traffic !!!!! I had to call a tow truck on the side of the road and towed it into a shop. They diagnosed it to be a bad MAF sensor!!! The same one i had put in 4 months prior almost cost me my life!! Never again am i buying Aftermarket stuff!!!

I know they just put aftermarket parts in and threw away the good stuff. Of course there are aftermarket bad suppliers but like i said some aftermarket suppliers are also OEM suppliers (same part different box and price) One more thing. Are you sure that MAF sensor was for that model of car? parts mismatching can happen sometimes. Quick tip: check the OEM part code in an online EPC like 7zap.com or everythingbenz.com. Great comparison! I wonder what quality / make and price class that aftermarket part was. It looked like low quality ‘imitation’ level quality. When I buy aftermarket parts I always buy quality ones. E.g. the fuel pump of my car is OEM from VDO. The MAF sensor is OEM Bosch as goes for both O2 sensors. Brake parts from ATE. Spark plugs are from Bosch or NGK. And the headlights are form Valeo or Hella 🙂 I mean VW does not produce all these parts themselves right? Last OEM part I bought was a N75 sensor because I could not figure out what make it originally came from. This has prompted a question : when you say original MAF sensor do you mean an actual Hyundai one or an OE supplier one, conversely when you say an aftermarket one one do you mean a no-name cheapy Chinese one or an OE supplier one. As we all know, Hyundai like all car manufactures don't usually make their own sensors, they buy them in from the likes of Bosch/Delphi etc. So what I'm getting to is, having seen this video and after your answer to the above question, should I really only buy sensors from the car manufacturer, or can I, in your opinion work with OE supplier sensors with confidence?

Oh boy i remember one aftermarket lambda thats was driven only about 100km and it didnt want to stay closed loop. However if either is off .13 volts which one is better or worse... and that leads to the computer telling other components to adjust and are they working correctly. As you said cars get old so that's why value ranges are important. Who is to say the aftermarket from a local garage or a OEM from a dealer is the better value.. And considering in this age of social media and how us DIYer's look for known quality you'd think parts manufacturers would get their game together. Sometimes on older cars you cant get OEM anymore so you rely on AM. I mean how much extra would it cost for them to use better bits? Bugger all I'd say especially when this can relay on to higher sales due to a good reputation for good quality replacements. Word spreads fast on the DIY grapevine now.

Would the fuel trim not compensate for any deviations in MAF sensor readings (or even a dirty filter)? Shouldn't the engine adaptations be cleared or the vehicle driven enough for the fuel trims to compensate for any differences in readings before condemning the aftermarket sensor.

Relying on fuel trim to correct AFR would be problematic. 40% fuel trims would trigger lean codes and the MIL. Also, fuel trim does nothing in open loop such as at WOT. The driveability problem he experienced was at WOT. It is questionable as to whether the the PCM can eventually relearn MAF sensor values. The scanner and/or PCM offered no option to force adaptation. That part was obviously too far out of spec.

Dan, here in America the majority of after market parts that are junk or doa are made in China, sometimes Mexico. Where you are from is this also a problem or are us Americans just un lucky? Here, we either take chances at parts stores or online retailers or buy oem at 4x the cost.

Normally parts are quite good over here, most aftermarket brands over here are the known Big companies like Bosch,Hella or pierburg. It's only when you choose less know brands when it gets tricky

I believe "calculated engine load", (PID $04 in OBDII), correlates to VE at present operating conditions (@ WOT). "Absolute engine load",(PID $43), correlates to VE @ STP (@WOT). You should research it to confirm it though.

The MAF sensor signal is also used to calculate transmission line pressure control. Good way to burn up a transmission if it is fooled into thinking it needs lower line pressure than it should.

I wonder who REALLY makes the OEM parts ? VW, Hyundai, Mercedes ??? C'mon people, there are Aftermarket parts that are way better and way cheaper then OEM parts. You think that a Bosch fuel filter is not as good as an OEM one (that could also be a Bosch) ?
@Diagnosedan
@Diagnosedan 5 лет назад
I'm talking about sensors in this Video, and you are right there are good aftermarket parts. But how should we know what's good and what's not. I guess we need to depend on the experience of our part supliers for that. The funny thing is in this case the price difference between the two sensors was only 10€.
@zumik83

@@Diagnosedan ...Sorry for the fuel filter. It just happend that I needed to change my MAP sensor, not the MAF which is stil ok, but I didn't hesitate in choosing a BOSCH one instead of OEM. Great vid Dan, but I would also like to add that you could have tested all of this with a cheap multimeter... (voltage out, ground voltage in and continuity from sensor to pcm). Also most cheap code readers with live data, (even non graphing) will tell you grams per sec. I am a poor technican, like most of us in the states I make due with what tools I can afford. Believe it or not most shops in the US don't have lab scopes. We here in the US have awful aftermarket MAF sensors too, the worst are remans from a place called A1 cardone and they should be avoided like the plague.

@Diagnosedan
@Diagnosedan 5 лет назад
No, calibration.
@fascistpedant758
@fascistpedant758 5 лет назад
Any calibration or "tuning" would be in the PCM and would not change or explain the difference between the two sensors.
@tomvleeuwen
@tomvleeuwen 5 лет назад
@@fascistpedant758 It would explain the difference between the sensors if the calibration is in the PCM, since that means that the signal on the wire is uncalibrated. Just like an old-school TPS. I don't know much about Hyundai's, and I'd like to keep it that way, but I know that any BMW with an mass air flow meter allows you to reset the adaptations and it will then use the O2 sensor in combination with the injector pulse width to get an accurate estimate of the mass air flow and use that to calibrate the sensor.
@fascistpedant758
@fascistpedant758 5 лет назад
Adaptation recalibrates the PCM to compensate for variations. The Hyundai may in time have learned the new minimum and maximum airflow values and adapted also. That still doesn't explain such a large variation between the signals from two supposedly interchangeable sensors. I doubt that specified manufacturing tolerances would be so wide.

Question:You didn't check the heater voltage. In your description of operation you said the heater is part of the feedback circuit of the amplifier. What if the heater was not operating? What can one expect to see on the heater wires? I'd assume it might be a similar signal to the sensor output since the voltage must vary in response to the amount of air flowing as well - No? If the heater is open (or the pcm is not driving it) what would the output of the sensor be? Zero (like you observed?) Maybe the heater was bad or the wiring or pcm output was bad. For a thorough check it might be wise to confirm the heater circuit as well - No?
@Diagnosedan
@Diagnosedan 5 лет назад
That circuit is internal to the sensor and can't be checked seperately. There are only 3 wires to check. Power/ground and signal.
@davesage9190
@davesage9190 5 лет назад
Perhaps the control circuit is internal BUT those two wires come out for some purpose. Shouldn't they be check for something? Either another power and ground (for the heater) or...…. Would they be like an O2 sensor heater - that should be checked??

Barry, you have the same question I do: If the aftermarket mass airflow sensor voltage is indicating less air mass going into the engine than actual, the ecm will trim less fuel to match, causing a lean condition, right? This should show on the oxygen sensors as a lean condition and confuse the ecm, wouldn't it? It confuses me.

This is one big reason why I am an advocate of OEM parts, even on older cars. If outfits a new car with a sensor that's bad enough to noticably affect driving behaviour, but good enough to not trigger a check engine light, imagine what it would mean if you are the lucky one with a "good enough" ignition coil AND injector AND pump AND camshaft sensor.
